PRAGMATICS ASSIGNMENT1)Week 2: Context, deixis and reference

Find a dialogue and identify deixis, types of deixis, anaphoric, cataphoric andellipsisAnne: Well, good morning again everyone and welcome to Perspectives, theweekly New South Wales Radio programme on subjects of general interest fromour local area. Today I have in the studio Mr. George Symonds. Good morningGeorge.

    George: Good morning Anne.

Anne: So, what are you going to talk to us about today George?

George: Well, for people from New South Wales and particularly Sydney, this will

be of great interest I hope. Im going to tell you a little about Sydney HarborBridge.

Anne: Wow. Thatll be so interesting.

George: I think so. To start with Id like to tell you a little about the size of thebridge. The arch span is 503 meters and the weight of the steel arch is 39,000tons. The summit is 134m above mean sea level, though it can actually increaseby as much as 18 cm on hot days as the result of steel expanding in heat. The twopairs of pylons at each end are about 89 meters high and are made of concreteand granite. The steel used for the bridge was largely imported. About 79% camefrom the United Kingdom but the rest was Australian-made. The granite was

quarried in Moruya down the coast, and the concrete is also Australian.Anne: So, most of the steel used to make our great bridge actually came fromEngland?

George: Yes, Im afraid so. However the work force was all Aussie!

Anne: Thank God for that. When was the bridge actually built?

George: The bridge was opened in 1932 but work first began in 1924, with theconstruction of the bridge approaches and spans, with two separate teamsbuilding the arch on each side working towards each other. The arch wassuccessfully joined on August 19, 1930. Im afraid that working practices werentvery fair in those days and the local government demolished 438 homes whichwere in the way of the approaches, and as many as 800 families living there weredisplaced without compensation. The standards of industrial safety wereinadequate too. 16 workers died during its construction, mainly from falling off thebridge.

    Anne: I didnt realize that.

George: Yes. The bridge was formally opened on the 19th March 1932 by thePremier of New South Wales, Mr. Jack Lang. When it was opened, it was thelongest single span steel arch bridge in the world and it was one of the greatestengineering masterpieces of its time. Several songs were also composed inadvance for the occasion but these have now been largely lost or forgotten.

Hello, this is Munster Car and Van Hire, how can I help you?Good morning. I was wondering whether you have a van available for hire nextweek.

Certainly, sir. We have a number of vehicles in stock right now. Though I shouldwarn you that its our busy time of year and youll need to book today if you wantto guarantee a vehicle. What precisely are you looking for?

Well. Im looking for a van. Preferably quite a small one. Ive just moved houseand I need a van to transport my garden furniture.

I see. So I imagine that you will be looking at one of our smaller vans.

Yes. A transit van will do me just fine. What makes do you have available?

Well. Let me see. We have the latest Renault which has the largest capacity andthen there is the Ford which is our most popular hire.

Hmmm. Im not too concerned about the size of the vehicle. Would the Ford belarge enough to take my garden table and chairs?

Oh yes. I dont see any real problem with that. You could fit a good 18 cubicmeters in there.

You mentioned next week. Can you give me a precise date so that I can go aheadand make the booking for you?

Im working Monday through Wednesday so itll have to be towards the end of theweek. Ideally, Id like to pick it up on Friday and then return it first thing onMonday, but I suppose it would turn out more expensive that way. How muchmore would it cost me if I returned it on Monday rather than Saturday? Its $21 a

day and $12 a half day so that would be $33 extra.Thats not so bad cheaper than I expected. So can we say Ill collect it on the17th? Thats Thursday.

No problem. And just to be clear, you intend to return it Monday morning.

Well, just to be on the safe I think Ill keep it for the week and return it Wednesday that should give me plenty of time.

Now Ill need to take some details from you so that I can fill out all the paperwork.Your name is?

Justin. Justin Beebor. And thats spelt with a double E: B-E-E-B-O-R

    Okay. And the address?

Well. Ive just moved. Would you like my old address or the new one? Everythingis still currently registered at the old one and Im yet to move in.

Well take the old address then. We just need somewhere where we can send theconfirmation of your booking to. Youre in Toronto I take it.

Yes thats right. Im actually just moving across the city. My current postal addressis 14 Castle Street.

Next thing on the list is a telephone number. Given that youre in between houses.I think it makes sense to take your cell phone number. We need a means to

contact you in case of emergency.

Thats 0231-4463-7689. No hang on. That doesnt sound right. Its 0231-4462-7689.

Im always getting that wrong. Strange how you can never remember your ownnumber.

Now I need some details about your driving record for insurance purposes. I takeit you have a full driving license and not a provisional one.

Yup thats right. I assume my normal driving license qualifies me to drive a transitvan. You dont need a special license for that do you?

No. no. Anyone with a full driving license is qualified to drive a van of that size.Any convictions?

Nothing serious. No drink driving. Just a few parking tickets.

Okay. They dont count. So that is no convictions.

Have you had any insurance claims in the past 5 years?

Just the one when a car hit me while I was stationary in a car park.

Almost there now. Youll need to show some ID when you collect the van.Anything with your photo on it will do just fine.

6)Week 8: Conversation and preference structure

Find a dialogue and identify the adjacency pairs

F: East hill Town Hall, Tourism and City Life Office, Fiona speaking. How may I helpyou?

M: Yes, hello. I dont live in East hill, but Ive just been offered a job there, for a fewmonths. It means I need to arrange to move to East hill for the summer.

F: Where would you like to start?

    M: Perhaps with accommodation?

F: OK, East hills certainly not the easiest place to find accommodation in.

    M: Oh dear.

F: But Im not saying its impossible. Its not that big a town, and the center, beinghistoric, is quite small, so demand is very high and thats reflected in prices.

    M: I only want a single place.

F: What Id recommend, to keep costs down, is a shared flat. The rent would be muchlower than a one-bedroom place, particularly in the center.

M: Uh-huh. If I really wanted to maintain my privacy, and get at least, say, a studioflat...

F: Well, that might be a compromise. I dont have any specific details. If you werealready here, you could visit some of the local estate agents to get details of studio

flats, but I do know that if you go onto new home as in one word dot com, that sitehas quite a few places, and there are pictures and plans and so on.

M: OK, Ill just write that down. Thats great, thanks.

F: One thing to be aware of is a new piece of legislation which means that landlordsare responsible for ensuring their tenants are who they say they are. So any landlordwill ask you to provide documentary evidence, not just your passport etcetera, asthey always have, but now of your employment.

M: Right, thanks. And I guess Ill need to pay by standing order through my bank?

F: Thats the normal way, yes. With the rent, do get clear what is and isnt part of thestandard price. Youll need to know if sheets and towels are provided, or whetheryoud have to allow extra. Bills such as electricity are always included, but I think thephone will always be an extra.

M: Right. Now, what about transport?

F: East hill has really good bus services. Theyre frequent and they go everywhere, and theyre how everyone gets around. But they are quite expensive if you pay foreach trip, so its better to get a pass.

    M: OK.

F: Theyre available as 7-day, thats the shortest, 30-day, 90-day, which wouldperhaps suit you the most, and one-year, which works out the cheapest, but might be

too long for you.M: Yes, it definitely would.

F: Is there anything else I can help you with?

M: Yes. I like to keep fit, so Id like to know what health clubs there are in East hill.

F: Ok, well, there are two, Blooms Leisure Centre and also the Good Life Centre. Ivegot some information here about them.

M: Would I be able to try them before actually joining?

F: Lets see... yes, one of the staff at Blooms will show you around if you go along, and then you make your decision about joining. While at the Good Life, you can...

well, OK, they offer two fitness classes at no charge, so you can get a taste of whattheyre like. This isnt for specialist classes, such as tai chi, it says.

M: Its something, anyway. Id hope to meet new friends at a health club, you see.

F: Oh yes, and both clubs have cafs. If you do join Blooms, you can elect to be a goldcard member, which means youd be entitled to a discount of ten percent in the cafthere. Actually, the caf in the Good Life is shut at the moment for refurbishment, butI guess it might be open again by the time you move here.

M: Does it say much about the equipment available?

F: Blooms have a lot of different machines, so you can choose exactly what you wantto do, while the Good Life doesnt have quite so many machines, but theyre carefullysequenced, so that you follow special routines. It says that these get you really fit.

M: Sounds interesting. And I love swimming. Do they have pools?

F: Er. The one at Blooms is full-size, and its outdoor, so it used to be rather chillyexcept in the summer

M: I dont play tennis. Maybe I should start! Are there trainers to help you?

F: I am not sure. You must see them by appointment, not just any time.

M: That seems fair enough. Youve been very helpful, thank you.

F: Not at all. Now, would you like me to send you the information you asked about
