The Programme started in 2007 and addresses the need to educate qualified Civil Engineers who are interested in specializing further in the field of structural analysis and design of concrete, steel or masonry structures and foundations under seismic excitation. The Programme has been approved by the Greek Ministry of Education and is offered fully in the English language. The Programme offers courses and research opportunities in the areas of earthquake engineering such as: structural dynamics, structural analysis and design, computational mechanics, geomechanics, reliability and risk analysis. ADERS is designed, with its variety of topics in earthquake engineering to prepare students for carriers as consulting engineers, in private or government organizations, researchers, or members of the academic community. Students will have the opportunity to balance practical engineering concepts with advanced computational methods in order to meet the challenges of earthquake engineering. Infor- Programme Aims The Postgraduate Programme ADERS aims at providing its students with the required knowledge for: Understanding the underlying principles and limitations of current seismic codes. Achieving an increased seismic reliability of new constructions through basic research on modeling and applied research in code specifications and practices. Implementing advanced methodologies for seismic design, repair and assessment. A rational assessment, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing structures - including historical monuments, which need to be re-evaluated and upgraded, respecting the history of traditional practice and using sophisticated materials. Earthquake Engineering is a mul t id i sc ip l inary and constantly evolving science encompassing structural analysis and design, computational methods and material science, both in a deterministic and stochastic context. This evolution of theoretical models, design p r o c e d u r e s a n d construction technologies has evolved through and thanks to, the knowledge gained by observed structural performance in p a s t d e v a s t a t i n g earthquakes worldwide. Recent events in developing countries, as well as in modern cities of developed countries, have shown the large life and economic losses that can occur after a strong earthquake, as a consequence of insufficient design and construction. High quality training and education of professionals and researchers in the field of analysis and design of earthquake resistant structures is of paramount importance in reducing the seismic risk in earthquake vulnerable regions. Greece has the largest seismic energy release per sq. km compared to all other European countries and as a consequence, seismic awareness and considerable experience is established among Greek structural engineers, who have adopted seismic design rules and advanced dynamic analysis practices since 1959. This demand for high quality training and education in the field of Earthquake Engineering has a strong impact on the content of both undergraduate and post-graduate studies at the School of Civil Engineering, NTUA, as it is evident by the number of compulsory and elective courses given on the subject and is reflected in the theoretical and practical competence of its faculty members.

THE SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, NTUA The National Technical University of Athens, the oldest and largest Technical University in Greece, was founded in 1836.

The School of Civil Engineering, NTUA, is the largest in terms of student population and the oldest Engineering School in Greece. The School of Civil Engineering follows a 5-year course of studies in its undergraduate curriculum, awarding an M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering. The School has an annual turnout of about 260 Civil Engineers; 200 of them are Structural and Geotechnical Engineering Majors.

ADMISSIONS The ADERS Programme is mainly addressed to Civil Engineers. Potential applicants must hold a degree in Civil Engineering and be graduates of a 4 or 5 year course of studies offered by an internationally recognized university. Non-native speakers of English language must provide a certified proficiency in the English language such as:

Certificate of a CERF C1 or C2 level in English language.

TOEFL with a minimum score of 220.

IELTS with an overall score of 7.

Confirmation from university, if the undergraduate studies were completed in English.

According to the Hellenic Legislation graduates from abroad are required to refer to DOATAP (Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Center-NARIC) for the recognition of their academic degree. This step is essential in order to graduate from the ADERS programme.

.

DURATION - REQUIREMENTS The course can be followed on a full

time basis with three (3) semester

duration. In order to fulfill the degree

requirements, students should

successfully attend a total of ten (10)

courses as well as to undertake and

present a Thesis.
