The other major event that set the stage was Nicolaus Copernicus's риЬ-lication оГ De revolutionibus orbiuт celestiuт in 1543, the year of his деанЬ- thirteen centuries after Ptolemy's тоде1 апд thirty years Ьefore Kepler'sЬirth - proposing the iдеа that the earth апд other planets тоиед arounд thesun. Copernicus argueд for his system on grounдs of mathematical eleganceапд sufficiency, not on the Ьasis о Г physical causation. Iпдеед, for mathe-matical reasons, he р1асед the center of the solar system at the center of theEarth's orbit, rather than the center of the sun itself .

Kepler етЬгасед Copernicus's heliocentric characterization of planetaryorbits. But from the start, he changeд this conception гадiса11у, infusing itwith саива1 signifcance.
