Casey Gore Takes 1st at District FFA Sen-
ior Creed Speaking—The creed is the heart
and soul of the FFA organization, as Casey
describes it. It outlines the tenets by which
the members and association abide. After
reciting the creed, a roundtable discussion
was held in which Casey was quizzed on the
relevance of the creed as it pertains to the
economy, government, and society in gen-
eral. The creed was written by E. M. Tiffany
and adopted at the 3rd National Convention
of the FFA in 1930.

First Grade Hatches Exotic Silky Chickens—First graders got
to see 16 baby chicks hatch this week because Casey Gore, an
11th grade student aide for 1st grade teacher Mrs. Jenkins,
brought his incubator into the classroom a few weeks ago. The
first grade class has been eagerly anticipating when they would
get to see the babies. They hatched over two days. As each chick
hatched, it was put into a box prepared with food and water and
a heat lamp. Each tiny chick’s beak had to be urged into the wa-
ter immediately after being put into the box. Casey Gore shows
this breed of chickens at livestock shows, and he will show these
this year. Pictured above L-R are Casey Gore, first graders Da-
kota Klemptner and Alyssa Short, and Mrs. Jenkins, first grade
teacher. Inset shows the first chick that hatched. Alyssa Short
says, “The chicks are really cute.” She says that someday maybe
she would like to raise chickens. “Right now at home I have a big guard dog named Foxy and a miniature wienie dog named Levi.
We drew little pictures about the chickens in class.” The pictures showed the life cycle. Dakota Klemptner says, “They are cute. My
favorite part of having the baby chicks in the classroom was the hatching. It was cool. I had never seen baby chicks hatch like that
before. I have a horse and a cow at home. I would someday like to show a horse at a livestock show. My horse’s name is Bolt, and he
likes to eat out of my hand. Usually I feed him an apple.”

Read Across the Bluff Coming on Tuesday—FCCLA students will
once again literally be bringing to life the sights and sounds of children’s
favorite storybooks when they present Read Across the Bluff to students
in PK-3rd grades on Tuesday. Mrs. Vandiver says that the students have
been working hard and are excited to transform classrooms into enchant-
ing worlds. This year the students will have the chance to travel to Winter
Wonderland, take a walk in Thanksgiving Plaza, go Camping Out, enter a
Buggy World and go Under the Sea. This FCCLA project seeks to en-
courage reading skills in young students.

FFA Validation Deadlines
Approach
Students who will be showing pigs are in the process of purchas-
ing those. It appears that we will have approximately 6 to 8 head
of pigs on feed. Swine validation is on the 26th and broiler orders
must be turned in on December the 1st. Ft. Worth entries are due
by the 15th of November and all other major entries are due by
Dec 1.
Mr. Abner says that he hopes to be purchasing a gasoline-
powered portable miller welder with grant money that is received
from the Perkin’s grant. This will allow the students to work
outside more easily and work on projects for people in the com-
munity that need to be done on-site, i.e. pens, corrals, signs etc.
In the classroom we have been covering the different breeds of
animals, started covering hand tools with the freshman class,
practicing our shop skills, and learning how to properly prepare
outlines and speeches.
FFA members did a trash pick-up on Monday afternoon. Pictured

Billy Emerson Retires from School Board—At last night’s board meeting, Billy Emerson was honored for
his years of service to the students and staff of Sulphur Bluff ISD when he was presented a clock plaque com-
memorating his time on the school board of 2008-2012. Mr. Emerson served as an officer on the board. He
also served the school for many years as an employee when he was transportation director here at The Bluff
for over 20 years. Mr. McCullough, superintendent, says, “I would like to thank Billy for his service and com-
mitment to the students of Sulphur Bluff ISD. Any time we discussed purchasing something for the district, his
main focus was on doing what was best for the students. If it was something that helped students succeed, he
supported it. We appreciate his time on the board and wish him the best. Pictured above are Mr. Emerson, left,
and Mr. McCullough.
