No Matter WHERE You Start...

FINISH STRONG

Students come to Archbishop Murphy High School from all over the Puget Sound area: from the Eastside, the Seattle area, the Islands, and as far north as Mt. Vernon.

Why? Because our dedicated faculty works hard to make each student’s high school experience a time of growth – through exploration and reflection, fellowship and fun. Students come from far and wide thanks to our bus service, tuition assistance, and 101 Lab Program. Families choose Archbishop Murphy because our graduates are persons of character and are well prepared for college.

Our students embrace The Murphy Way: “Do Good, Give Respect, Show Excellence, Live Faith” and, when they leave as seniors, understand the strength behind our Catholic ethic.

It is not who you are when you get here that matters. It is who you are when you walk across the stage at graduation.

HistoryIn the early 1980s, the need for a Catholic high school in the North Sound/Snohomish County area became clear to a group of Catholic parents. Because of their determination, the community and pastors supported the project. Northsound Association for Catholic Education was formed and board members were selected.

1988While funds were being raised to build a permanent school on the South Everett property, Holy Cross High School opened in September at the former Our Lady of Perpetual Help grade school. There were 15 freshmen and 8 sophomores that first year.

1999Holy Cross was renamed to honor the late Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy, whose efforts ensured the success of AMHS. In October, 254 students and 20 faculty moved to the new campus.

2003A second building, Grace Hall, was built. The football/soccer field was installed with bleacher seating and a press box, and a five-acre athletic complex was developed.

2007Heath Hall, our third building, was built. Measuring 40,000 square feet, it includes classrooms, state-of-the-art science labs, offices, a student life and counseling center and performing arts space.

TodayEnrollment is steady at the 2A size and the pages of this book will hopefully describe all that we offer to our students.

In Christ There is Joy and Hope

Enrich Your

FaithSPIN: Serving People In NeedEach year, AMHS students complete individual service requirements to receive credit for Theology class. Students volunteer at Camp Prov and other summer camps, work at homeless shelters and food banks, go on mission trips, and participate in many other great opportunities.

RetreatsRetreats at AMHS are full of community building, lively activities, and of course, faith!

The “Freshman Retreat” emphasizes getting to know one another and living the “Murphy Way” of doing good, giving respect, showing excellence, and living faith.

The “Quest Retreat” is open to all Freshmen and Sophomores and invites students to explore the three “Circles of Joy” while deepening relationships with themselves, friends & family and with God.

The “KAIROS” retreat experiences have been life changing weekends for many AMHS upperclassmen. Kairos, translated as “God’s time,” is a unique opportunity for our Juniors and Seniors to strengthen their relationship with God through listening and discussion, prayer, sacrament, and time for relaxation and reflection. The retreat format is now used extensively across the US and is the most popular retreat at AMHS. Hundreds of students attend each year.

The Freshmen Retreat is required for all 9th graders, the rest of the retreat offerings are optional, but strongly encouraged. All students are welcome regardless of their religious background, assuming an openness to share and an attitude of respectfulness

Operation Rice BowlThe Class of 2010 led efforts to raise $25,010 for Operation Rice Bowl. AMHS is the No. 1

Everyone is creative in some way, and AMHS can’t wait to help you find out where your talents lie. Love music? Join band or choir, or try out for the school musical. Do you doodle? Take a painting or drawing course. Were you the best mud pie chef in your neighborhood? Pottery is for you. Play with color or join the cast for the next school play – the arts are waiting for you here.

Hang with the MastersAMHS is in the enviable position of having an annual juried art show at the Seattle Art Museum. Each spring, over 600 participants (AMHS students and invited community) submit their best work of the year. The top selections are put on display at SAM, one of America’s finest art museums. Worried you’re not good enough? Remember, Picasso was once a beginner!

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Robotics TeamDubbed as a varsity sport of the mind, Robotics Team Competition combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, and build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It is as close to “real world” engineering you can get!

“Why do we put salt on sidewalks when it snows?”

How can the population of the earth continue to grow without endangering the world’s resources?

Exploring the worlds of biology, chemistry and physics gives students a better understanding of, and a deeper appreciation for, the natural world. As citizens and Christians, students will be able to make informed decisions concerning scientific matters that relate to our world and nation.

Classes in the Vocational/Technology Department help develop life-long skills as well as give a taste of various professions. Computer classes range from Intro to I.T. to AP Computer Science; media classes run the gamut

from a Graphic Arts class to Independent Study in Video Production. The design and creation of publications are covered in Yearbook class. During our annual Career Week, guest lecturers and parents from local science and technology corporations visit to share how they are using these skills in their daily work.

Before coming to AMHS in 2001 to teach AP Biology and Anatomy/Physiology, Dr. Wellenstien was a physician. She has also led student groups to Costa Rica to study biological diversity, and her Hi-Q Club placed fourth in nationals.

Mrs. Wright teaches Choral-Aires (Honors

Choir), Concert Choir, and Drama. She also directs

our Spring Musical. Mrs. Wright enjoys a wide

variety of music from opera to country!

Prior to teaching at AMHS, Mr. Broadniak was a practicing attorney. He now teaches US History, AP Government, Politics, and Law. He founded our very successful Mock Trial program and has also helped coach football at AMHS.

You’ll need to run to keep up with the energetic AMHS faculty. Here are some of the faculty, staff and students at the Seattle Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis.

Our Amazing Faculty

Fr. Armando Guzman works in Campus Ministry. Fr. Guzman celebrates Mass at AMHS, attends retreats, and is the Guitar Club moderator.

Miss Callaghan has taught at AMHS since the founding of our school. She teaches English, English Honors, Theology, and Theology Honors.

Archbishop Murphy teachers bring their academic expertise and passion for education to the classroom every day. While teaching tactics vary from class to class, students are always engaged and inspired by their studies. More than 70 percent of our teachers hold a degree of Masters or higher in their chosen field of expertise. Our teachers play a much bigger role than that of an academic educator. They serve as advisors, coaches, trip leaders, and role models for students throughout the year.

Ms. Kenny teaches Theology, all French levels, and hosts the French Club. She chaperones the trip to Europe and coordinates our Guatemala Mission Trip. We are so lucky to have this Notre Dame and University of Portland graduate!

Mrs. Walsh will be your Freshman Theology teacher. She is very artistic and loves sunflowers. She has taught at AMHS since 1994.

athletic teams

AMHS is a member of the Cascade Conference, a 2A league. We offer a variety of sports teams in which you can be involved, including non-cut sports such as swimming, cross country, wrestling and track. Our programs emphasize the development of athletic skills in an environment centered on fair play and sportsmanship.

Wildcat Buddy Mentoring ProgramThe Wildcat Buddy Program is designed to match elementary school students with Archbishop Murphy athletes. Coach Terry Ennis created the program to encourage athletes to accept the responsibility of being positive role models in our community. We know our athletes benefit greatly when they have someone look up to them and to support their athletic efforts.

The players look forward to seeing their “little buddies” after each game, and sharing the experience with the team. The AMHS players are encouraged to attend their little buddy’s games and events, and support their activities, too.
