Come to the Library for a highly interactive two hour workshop that'll focus on the key elements of writing fi ction and nonfi ction. Th rough writing prompts/exercises and brief readings, we'll discuss how to develop our own stories starting with the fundamental aspects: language, character, confl ict, setting, plot. Th is class is geared toward both the beginning writer who would like help getting started and the experienced writer who would like a refresher. Th is workshop will be presented by Keith Lesmeister, author of the story collection We Could’ve Been Happy Here. Lesmeister received his M.F.A. from the Bennington Writing Seminars. He lives and works in rural northeast Iowa.

Join us for a preview performance of the upcoming ISU Th eatre production of Th e Children's Hour followed by a discussion. In this 1934 play, one of the students in an all-girls boarding school is disobedient, untruthful, and ultimately runs away from the school. To avoid being sent back by her family, she tells her grandmother that the two head mistresses of the school are having a lesbian aff air. Th e play is a warning about the consequences of “alternative facts” and plea for radical empathy. All ages are invited to a free performance of Th e Internet is a Distract—OH LOOK A KITTEN! by Ian McWethy presented by the Story Th eater Company's Traveling Story Troupe. Micah only has twenty minutes to fi nish her paper on Th e Great Gatsby. She just needs to check a few facts on the internet fi rst. Unfortunately, the web is a nefariously wacky place where boxing cats, Facebook lurkers, and pig-throwing games threaten to take over Micah's schoolwork, or worse. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this high-octane comedy that explores the rabbit hole of distraction we all go down every time we go online.Provided in partnership with Ames Public Library and Story Th eater Company: Traveling Story Troupe.

Anti-Racism SeriesTh e Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC) of Ames and Ames Public Library will present a series of lectures and workshops focused on raising conscious awareness of racism and of systemic white supremacy, including the harms done to all peoples by these systems. We will learn and work together to combat and dismantle racist systems locally, statewide, and nationally. Participants are encouraged to join us from beginning to end, as the series was created for developmental growth.
