From March into April, here we are full blown into Spring! I hope you all had some fun during Spring Break and took some well-deserved R&R. Things were quiet here at the school that week, which is always nice for a few days but then I miss the students and staff and look forward to them all returning and getting back to the business of school. In March, just before Spring Break, we held our 4th annual Ke Ali’i Night, and oh what a night! I hope you were there, because if you missed it, you missed out. Ke Ali’i Night is a night where we get to celebrate student success and showcase their work with classroom and club displays in the cafeteria. Our wonderfully talented choir always makes an appearance, and this year we had a fun demonstration from our Ke Ali’i Wrestling Team as well as an impressive presentation from our Hawaiian Immersion students. A huge Mahalo to our event coordinator Lori Koyama, and to all the teachers, staff, and students who put so much time and hard work into creating a truly successful event! And to our parents for coming to show support - I can see in our sons and daughters how proud and happy it makes them to see their parents there! Read further into this newsletter to see pictures of the night and check out our Facebook page for some video of our wrestlers, singers, and student work we had on display. Lahaina Intermediate School students have recently received a visit from Project Vision Hawaii, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free vision screenings to all of Hawaii. The majority of our middle schoolers were screened during the first week of April with the help of community & parent volunteers (thank you!). If your child was found to need more extensive vision testing more information will be sent home with a request for consent to see an ophthalmologist for an eye exam at no cost to you, and, if needed, a free pair of glasses. I am forever impressed with the amazingly giving and supportive people of our Hawaii community. Congratulations to all of our 3rd Quarter Renaissance Qualifiers! Our students made history with over 370 students turning in community service and 340 students qualifying for their Renaissance Partners in Living and Learning card. That is a great percentage of our students who worked to either keep or get their grades up, maintained good behavior at school, and did at least four hours of community service in order to receive their gold, silver, or bronze Renaissance Partner’s Card which can be used all around the community for various discounts and freebies. They were also rewarded with a day at the movie theater watching Shazam! and then having lunch up at Iao Valley State Park. Congratulations Students! I am very proud of you! Staff Appreciation Week is early May and coming up soon so put it on your calendars - May 6-11. Just a simple token of gratitude can make an LIS staff member’s day - homemade treats, freshly picked flower or lei, a nice piece of fruit, or just a kind word or note letting them know they’re appreciated. I know our PTO has a few things planned, so if you’d like to help them out please reach out to our PCNC, Jayme Donez at [email protected]. I hope you appreciate these incredible Lahaina Intermediate School teachers and staff members as much as I do! Students created artwork in the style of famous artist

Dale Chihuly, American glass sculptor, using sharpies and re-purposed transparency

sheets.

In April, the LIS Craft Club created "egg-animals" with plastic eggs

generously donated by Nora Takushi. Students were excited to create

something unique while repurposing the plastic eggs. While materials given were

pretty basic, students came up with impressive and elaborate ideas all their

own for this months craft!

We completed our student vision screenings with Project Vision on April 1st and April 3rd. Thank you to all of our parent and community volunteers! The results of your child’s vision screening has been sent home. You should have receive one of two forms: one indicating your child passed his/her vision screen (no follow up needed) or one stating that your child failed and needs to be referred for further evaluation. If your child failed his/her vision screening, Vision to Learn, a mobile eye clinic that provides FREE eye exams and glasses will be coming to Lahaina Intermediate with an Optometrist to assess your child (we are still trying to coordinate a time for them to come to our school). In order for your child to be assessed by Vision to Learn’s Optometrist, you need to complete and return their parental consent form, which can be found in your child’s eye screening report. Please have your child turn it into their homeroom teacher. If you do not want your child to be checked by the Vision to Learn Optometrist please follow up with your child’s Primary Care Provider or Pediatrician. If you have any questions, please feel free to email our APRN, Lindsey Guth, at [email protected].

8Continuous Notice of Non-Discrimination

The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) and its schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, color, national origin, religion, or disability in its programs and activities.

Vaping: A Growing EpidemicVaping and the use of electronic cigarettes has become a public health concern nationwide with many organizations formulating anti-vaping campaigns across the country to combat this growing epidemic. Sadly, Hawai’i high school teens have reported to vape two times as much as youth nationally with 27% of Hawai’i middle school students reporting having tried e-cigarettes (Hawaii Department of Health, 2017). The Department of Education has initiated a social medial burst plan to provide awareness about e-cigarette use during the month of January. In order to join the campaign and promote awareness, we here at LIS would like to educate not only our students, but our parents as well. Help us at Lahaina Intermediate spread awareness of the harmful effects of vaping and ECigarette use by starting conversations with your children at home. For tips on initiating theconversation please click on the link below:https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/14/well/family/how-to-talk-with-teenagers-about-vaping.html
