Humble O merciful God, take pity on those souls who have no

particular friends and intercessors to recommend them to Thee, who, either through the negligence of those who are alive, or through length of time, are forgotten by their friends and by all. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

On October 26, 2017, from the Auletta of Paul VI Hall, Pope Francis had a live audio-video connection with the crew of Mission 53 on board the International Space

Station, a 400-kilometer flight from the Earth.

The crew is made up by Randolph Bresnik (U.S.A.), Commander of NASA; Paolo Nespoli (Italy), ESA engineer; Mark T. Vande Hei (U.S.A.) NASA engineer; Joseph Acaba (U.S.A., native of Puerto Rico) NASA engineer; Sergey Ryazanskiy (Russia), engineer and Alexander Misurkin (Russia), engineer.

Here is a ZENIT translation of the text of part of the conversation between the Holy Father and the Astronauts.

Good morning you all! Paolo Nespoli: Good morning, Your Holiness. Welcome to the International Space Station, among us, among the crew of expedition 52 and 53.

Holy Father: Question 5: And now, if you have the courtesy to listen, I’ll ask another question. Our society is very individualistic and in life, instead, collaboration is essential. I think of all the work that is behind an enterprise like yours. Can you give me a significant example of your collaboration in the Space Station?

Paolo Nespoloi: Holy Father, an optimal question. I’ll leave the question to the American colleague Joseph Acaba who is of Puerto Rican descent. Paolo Nespoli translates… Joe recalled that for this Station there is cooperation between several nations of the world: there is the United States, there is Russia, Japan, Canada, nine European nations . . . And he recalled how these nations work together to obtain something that is beyond each one of them. However, one of the important and interesting things that he said is the fact that each one of us bears a difference and these differences put together make a much greater whole than an individual person could be; and working thus together, in this collaborative spirit to go beyond, this is the way for us as human beings, to go out of the world and continue this voyage in knowledge.

Holy Father: Your are a small “Glass Palace!! The totality is greater that the sum of the parts, and this is the example that you give us.

Thank you so much, dear friends, I would like to say: dear brothers, because we feel ourselves representatives of the whole human family in the great project of research that is the Space Station. My heartfelt thanks for this conversation, which has enriched me very much. May the Lord bless you, your work and your families. I assure you: I will pray for you and you, please, pray for me. Thank you!

Paolo Nespoli: Holy Father, on behalf of all I want to thank you for having been with us today, on the International Space Station. This is a place where we do much research, where we go to seek the things of every day. We thank you for having been with us and for having led us higher and having pulled us out of this daily mechanicalness, and making us think of greater things than ourselves. Thank you again! © Libreria Editrice Vatican ZENIT translation from Italian by Virginia M. Lectors are scheduled to serve about once a month at weekend and Holy Day Masses. Handbooks guide our lectors through the readings so that the Liturgy of the Word may be proclaimed with confidence and clarity. A strong voice and good diction are considered assets for lectors. All lectors are given the opportunity to indicate the Mass times for which they prefer to be scheduled. For more information contact Kathy Hutton 201 444-1481 or [email protected].

All About Our Icons

Nativity of the Lord During the reign of Caesar Augustus, our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary in the town of Bethlehem. Refer to the Gospels of Matthew (chapters 1-2) and Luke (chapter 2) for the account of the Lord's birth in the flesh. The feast is universally celebrated on December 25. This beautiful icon depicts several scenes from this glorious event. In the center, the Theotokos lies beside the Lord in the cave. The ox and donkey represent the Jews and the Gentiles. In the upper right corner, an angel gives the good news of this birth to a shepherd, and on the left side, the Magi are guided by the star, carrying their gifts from the East. In the lower right corner, a midwife tends to the newborn Savior, and on the left side, Joseph the old man is tempted to leave Mary by the devil appearing in human form. (The latter two of these scenes are from the Holy Tradition (Protoevangelium of James), an early Christian text from which the Church draws a number of traditions about the Nativity.) The tree, which is in the middle of the lower part of the icon, is a symbol of the Tree of Jesse. This tree refers to Isaiah 11:1-2, "But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him." King David was often mentioned as the son of Jesse and Jesus was from the House of David. The Holy Icon of the Nativity reminds one to praise and glorify the Birth of Christ. The celebration of Christmas each year serves to remind each and everyone of us that Christ came for you and me.

Nativity’s Food Pantry has been providing the families at the York Street Project, more specifically, the children at the Nurturing Place, with non perishable foods for more than 25 years. Your continued generosity allows us to provide them with the assistance they need to feed these students.

We have been informed by our friends at the York Street Project that there has been a change in the donated foods they can accept to serve to the students at the Nurturing Place. They have provided us with the new approved list below.

Since the new governmental regulations, they are using more fresh foods, so if GIFT CARDS can be donated that would really help also. Currently they can use gift cards from:

SHOP-RITE, BJ'S AND TRADER JOE'S

If you donate foods, not on the approved list below, we will deliver the foods to the York Street Project. While they cannot be served to the children at the Nurturing Place, the Moms will use the food at home. Peace, Fr. George
