FROM THE PASTOR’S CORNER Sept. 16, 2018

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year “B” “Who do people say that I am?”

Recently I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments togeth-er at the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the father said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.' The daughter replied, 'Dad, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Dad.' They kissed and the daughter left. The Father walked over to the win-dow where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?' 'Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?'… 'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,' he said. 'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough ...' May I ask what that means?' He began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone...' He paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and he smiled even more. 'When we said, 'I wish you enough, 'we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.' Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory. I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting. I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may ap-pear bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. He then began to cry and walked away (author unknown). Today, Jesus wishes to impart on us the knowledge that is good enough to help us successfully navigate through the challenges of life. This is the knowledge of Himself as the Son of God, and a belief in God incarnate living among mortals to sanctify and restore it to the glory of God. This knowledge is not so much about God as it is about us, for the glory of God is human being fully alive. Knowing oneself demands that we break the shells imposed on us by the masks we wear to be able to see the hand of God at work in our lives. This is a process of introspection which is not an easy project to under-take.

We shy away from such a project because we want to think of ourselves as good persons but what we see inside of us does not always reflect how we want to think of ourselves. The crowd did not know who Jesus is. Looking at what Jesus did, they thought He was either Moses the law giver or Elijah the prophet. Their answers reveal to us that the crowd did not and cannot know the truth. The crowd has no eyes, no ears, no brain, no heart, etc. To follow the crowd is to live with a half-truth. And ultimately half-truth is a lie. Only the individual can know the truth because unlike the crowd, the indi-vidual has two eyes, ears, brain, heart, etc. It is by being in a relationship - opening our mind and heart to the truth of the Gospel that an individual comes to break the barriers posed by our personal masks. It is the word of God that has the power to break our masks and reveal the true image and likeness of God in each and every one of us. Peter was able to know the truth about who Jesus is because at the core of the human heart lies the truth, hence it takes an individual to know the truth. And to know the true identity of an individual, we need to go beyond the mask (persona - person). In a world where people live and judge by appearances, self knowledge remains the greatest challenge of discipleship. Having been with Jesus from Jerusalem to Galilee, and now at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus challenges His apostles’ knowledge of Himself to see if they are motivated by public opinion or have come to realize through per-sonal relationship and being open to the word of God, that He is the Son of God. Thanks to Peter now we have come to know the truth about Jesus. Do we still have Peters in the world today who reveal to the world the truth about Jesus? Unfortunately our world is full of people who believe in their masks and whose hearts are closed to the word of God, hence the many conflicts we see in our personal lives, families, neighborhood and among nations. Ours is a world that is full of half-truths which is ultimately lies. Half truths can win someone a political position but it can neither empower us to know ourselves as to be in genuine and lasting relationship nor can it empower us to know Jesus as to have a personal relationship with God. Man Know thyself remains a challenge to us because the glory of God is human being fully alive. It is by knowing and loving oneself that one is able to know and love others. It is incomplete to claim to know God with-out knowing our true self and knowing our true self necessitates openness to the word of God. The authentic faith which Jesus invites us to embrace in today’s Gospel, cannot be dissociated from knowledge expressed in good works (deeds). This is true because as we begin to know our true selves, we begin to share in the joys and sufferings of others. We begin to see ourselves as part of larger reality that is greater than ourselves. We begin to appreciate the place of God in our lives. Knowing Jesus will no longer be an abstract reality. Knowing and having a relationship with God becomes a joy shared with all sentient beings here and now.

In Thanksgiving for Prayers Received

To the Parishioners of All Souls Church:

Prayer is a mysterious, beautiful activity. I feel it impacts our lives, and the prayers offered and said

on my mother’s (Mary Anne Aarset), behalf made the difference in her life. When her heart

stopped, your prayers filled her spirit and physical heart. Now she is in recovery. I cannot express my

profound, amazing gratitude of your gifts of prayer. My heart is full. Her core gains strength

day by day.

Thank you and blessings to you all, Catherine Aarset

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY BLESSING

God bless our grandparents and keep them healthy and happy!!!

Blessing of the Statues of the Blessed Mother and St. John the Beloved

Once again, our deepest gratitude to Carlos and

Angie Ramirez and Lilia Gan for their generosity to All Souls in donating

the statues of the Blessed Mother and

St. John, the Beloved Disciple.

They will be cherished not only as parts of All Souls

history but also as instruments to increase our faith in and devotion to Our Lord.
