Repent And Believe In the Gospel

Lent is the time of year we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. Peter’s letter gives an explicit explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal we make to God for a clear con-science. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words proclaimed by Jesus immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived by our baptismal promises. Copyright © J. S. Feast Of Faith Seasonal Changes for the Liturgies of Lent

Today is the First Sunday of Lent. During this season of preparation for Easter, our churches look stark and sim-ple—no flowers at the altar, no festive banners or decorations. And our liturgies feel different, too. The organ is quiet except to accompany the singing of the assembly. The Gloria, our Sunday song of rejoicing, is not heard except on solemnities, and we will not sing the Alleluia, our joyful acclamation of praise, until the Easter Vigil. “Alleluia cannot always / Be our song while here below,” says an eleventh-century hymn. “Alleluia our transgressions / Make us for a while forego; / For the solemn time is coming / When our tears for sins must flow” (Alleluia dulce carmen, J. M. Neale, trans.). These changes in the liturgy will catch our attention, and make us eager for the festive outpouring of joy that will return with Easter. This year, may the stripped-away liturgies of Lent remind us to strip away what is not essential in our lives to make space for the crucified and risen One, and thus to be ready to sing “Alleluia” once again when Easter returns. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. Sunday, February 21, 2021 Dear People of St. Elizabeth of Portugal Parish, You will want to know what I have been doing since I came here on Feb. 1. I have been getting familiar with the parish, meeting people and participating in the daily services and the weekend liturgies. We are back to celebrating the daily and weekend masses out-side and livestreaming the weekend masses in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. We also livestream the daily mass in English. I thank all the ministers who participate in these liturgies and the tech people who do the transmissions. We do not know when we will be able to celebrate mass inside the worship space, but we are looking forward very much to that. I was happy to celebrate the feast of Tet with the Vietnamese community and I thank them for their welcome and for the beautiful flowers and the red envelopes that they gave me. I also thank the members of the Sacred Heart group for their welcome. I have my first meeting with the Finance Committee on Tuesday, Feb. 16 and with the RCIA people also on that night. We celebrated Ash Wednesday in a creative and different way because of the pandemic but it prepared us to enter the Season of Lent with hope and commitment. We have some offerings for you during Lent which we will publicize in the bulletin but we encourage you to come to daily Mass if possible, because the readings from scripture are powerful and help us in the con-version process that we all need. I also met the Leaders of Jóvenes Para Cristo and appreciate their generous offer to help the parish with their leadership skills and their youthful energy. I met with Joseph Thu Huynh, Parish Council Chairperson, and I look forward to meeting with the full Council in the future. I also met with Isabel Lutgardo of the Spanish speaking Legion of Mary and heard of the good work being done by the Legion. I still have to meet with more groups and leaders but am getting there slowly and by degrees. I will get to more people gradually

and will get to know you and to listen to you. Thank you for your welcome and the kindness that you have shown me and it’s a joy to serve you and to be with you in this beautiful parish. May the Lord bless and keep you, let His face shine on you and be gracious to you. May He look upon you with kindness and Grant you His Peace.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The entire world has been through a difficult, if not devastating, year! We would do well to take the advice Pope Francis offers us for Lent this year. He says, “[in] Lent, may we be increasingly concerned with ‘speaking words of comfort, strength, consola-tion, and encouragement, and not words that demean, sadden, anger or show scorn’ (Fratelli Tutti, 223). In order to give hope to others, it is sometimes enough simply to be kind, to be ‘willing to set everything else aside to show interest, to give the gift of a smile, to speak a word of encouragement, to listen amid general indifference’ (ibid., 224)” (Lenten Message, 2). Wise advice from our Holy Father! Be kind to one another. We have all been through a lot, and, as the experts remind us, this pandemic is not over. It has been a difficult journey, one in which we have all encountered rough seas. While some have weathered the storm in the safety of a large, sturdy ship, others have roughed the seas in dinghies and rafts. Acts of kindness, large and small, shine the light of hope through the darkness and reassure us that we are not on this journey alone. And that is what Lent offers us in this year of continued pandemic: Hope. It is Christ Jesus who is our hope (cf. 1Tm 1:1). In Jesus Christ risen, we gain strength and hope in a diffi-cult journey. In Lent, we are invited to journey ever more close-ly with Christ, who is always with us. We do so through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. In prayer, we dialogue with Jesus: we pour out our hear t to Him, and we listen to His words of comfort. We are consoled by His presence. Fasting makes our relationship with Jesus quite real and helps us be in solidarity with those who are in need. As a pastor, I have encountered so many parents who sacrifice quietly for their children as a matter of course. They do so, not because we Christians like to suffer. Rather, when we love someone, we don’t think twice about making sacrifices for them. Likewise, it is essential that our love for Christ not remain simply an idea, but that it be concrete, symbolically sharing what we give up with others. This is almsgiving! Something that genuinely pleases God: when we reach out to those in need– acting in kindness and giving hope! In this Lent, as Pope Francis encourages us, let us bring hope to others through simple gestures of kindness, “words of comfort,” and through our daily practice of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As we journey with Jesus through the desert these 40 days of Lent, we do so as a community of faith. Thus, we will “journey together in hope!” With my prayers for you this Lent! Yours in Christ,

Thân ái kính chào quý Giáo dân Giáo xứ Thánh Elizabeth nước Bồ Đào Nha, Thiết nghĩ quý Ông Bà và Anh chị em cũng nên muốn biết tôi đã làm được

những gì kể từ khi tôi đặt chân đến đây vào ngày 1 tháng Hai. Tôi đang làm quen dần với Giáo xứ, đã được gặp gỡ nhiều người, và đương nhiên cử hành

phụng vụ các Thánh Lễ ngày thường cũng như ngày Chủ nhật. Chúng ta nay lại phải cử hành Thánh Lễ hàng ngày ngoài trời và trực tuyến các Thánh Lễ Chủ nhật tiếng Anh, tiếng Tây Ban Nha và tiếng Việt. Chúng ta cũng trực tuyến Thánh Lễ tiếng Anh ngày thường. Tôi xin cảm ơn tất cả các thừa tác viên lo việc phụng vụ cũng như các kỹ thuật viên thực hiện trực tuyến. Không biết khi nào chúng ta mới có thể được trở lại cử hành Thánh Lễ trong Nhà Thờ, nhưng chúng ta rất mong chờ tới ngày đó. Tôi thật là vui khi được đến tham dự Thánh Lễ Tết với cộng đồng người Việt, và rất biết ơn

quý Ông Bà và Anh chị em đã ưu ái đón chào, đã tặng tôi một bó hoa thật đẹp cũng như bao lì xì đỏ mừng Xuân. Tôi cũng cảm ơn các thành viên của Đoàn Liên Minh Thánh Tâm đã đến chào hỏi tôi. Tôi đã có cuộc họp đầu tiên với Ban Tài chánh Giáo xứ vào thứ Ba, ngày 16 tháng 2 và cũng

được gặp nhóm RCIA vào cùng chiều đó. Năm nay, chúng ta cử hành Thánh Lễ Thứ Tư Lễ Tro với một sáng kiến mới, khác những

năm trước, vì bị đại dịch, nhưng thiết nghĩ điều đó cũng giúp chúng ta chuẩn bị bước vào Mùa Chay với một niềm hy vọng và có ý thức hơn. Giáo xứ có một ít sách biếu cho quý Ông Bà và Anh chị em trong Mùa Chay như được thông báo trong tờ thông tin; tuy nhiên, chúng tôi khuyến khích mọi người hãy cố gắng đến tham dự Thánh Lễ hàng ngày nếu có thể được, vì các bài đọc Kinh Thánh giúp chúng ta thêm sức mạnh để có thể đi suốt tiến trình hoán cải mà tất cả chúng ta ai cũng cần. Tôi cũng đã gặp các Trưởng của Nhóm Jovenes Para Cristo và đánh giá cao đề nghị thật

phóng khoáng của họ, muốn giúp Giáo xứ bằng khả năng lãnh đạo và sức sống trẻ của mình. Tôi đã gặp ông Huỳnh Thu Joseph, Trưởng Hội đồng Giáo xứ và tôi rất mong được gặp toàn

thể Hội đồng trong tương lai. Tôi cũng đã gặp Bà Isabel Lutgardo của Liên đoàn Mary tiếng Tây Ban Nha và được nghe

về những công việc tốt đẹp mà Liên đoàn đang thực hiện. Tôi sẽ tiếp tục gặp gỡ các Hội đoàn, Đoàn thể và các vị Hội Trưởng, Đoàn Trưởng nhưng

chắc cũng phải từ từ ở một mức độ nào đó. Dần dần thì tôi sẽ gặp gỡ được hết mọi người và sẽ được lắng nghe tất cả. Xin chân thành cảm ơn quý Ông Bà và Anh chị em đã niềm nở đón chào cũng như những cư

xử tử tế mà tất cả đã dành cho tôi, tôi cảm thấy rất vui khi được phục vụ và đồng hành với quý Ông Bà và Anh chị em trong giáo xứ thật xinh đẹp này. BÀI ĐỌC I: St 9:8-15 Bài đọc cho thấy Chúa hối tiếc vì đã cho lụt hồng thủy huỷ diệt kẻ tội lỗi, vì Chúa thương muốn cứu họ chứ không muốn phạt, nên Chúa lập giao ước với ông Noe không cho lụt tàn phá nữa.

BÀI ĐỌC II: Pr 3:18-22

Lụt đại hồng thủy đã hủy diệt những kẻ tội lỗi, chỉ trừ gia đình ông Noe. Ðó là hình ảnh Bí Tích Rửa Tội Chúa Giêsu lập, để xóa tội loài người và là ý nghĩa đoạn thư.

TIN MỪNG: Mc 1:12-15 Tin Mừng hôm nay thuật lại sau khi chịu phép rửa, Chúa Giêsu được Thánh Thần đưa vào hoang địa ăn chay cầu nguyện. Nhờ đó Người đã thắng ma quỷ và bắt đầu đi rao giảng Tin Mừng, kêu gọi mọi người sám hối và tin vào Tin Mừng.

Giáo luật điều 1251 dạy: “Thứ Tư Lễ Tro và Thứ Sáu Tuần Thánh buộc giữ chay và kiêng thịt.” Trong ngày ăn chay, chỉ được ăn một bữa no và hai bữa ăn ít, không được ăn no. Không được ăn vặt giữa các bữa ăn. TUỔI GIỮ CHAY: Theo Giáo Luật điều 1252 thì mọi người từ 18 tuổi cho đến khi bắt đầu 60 tuổi thì phải giữ chay. LUẬT KIÊNG THỊT: Luật kiêng thịt buộc những người từ 14 tuổi trọn. Tuy nhiên, các Chủ Chăn và các phụ huynh phải lo dạy cho các em chưa đến tuổi buộc ăn chay và kiêng thịt để chúng hiểu biết ý nghĩa đích thực của việc thống hối. Theo luật của Giáo Hội Hoa Kỳ, tất cả các ngày thứ Sáu trong mùa Chay phải kiêng thịt. Ba việc làm truyền thống trong Giáo Hội Công Giáo trong mùa Chay là: Ăn Chay, Cầu Nguyện, và Việc Làm Bác Ái.

Kính gửi Anh Chị em trong Chúa Ki-tô,

Cả thế giới đang trải qua một năm khó khăn, nếu không muốn nói là tai họa!

Chúng ta sẽ được an lành nếu nghe lời chỉ dẫn của Đức Giáo Hoàng Phan-xi-cô vào mùa Chay này. Ngài nói: “Trong mùa Chay, hãy nóí những lời dễ nghe, mạnh mẽ, an ủi, và khích lệ, nhưng đừng nóí những lời mạt sát, làm buồn lòng nhau, làm tức giận hay trách mắng nhau.” (Tông huấn Fratelli Tutti, 223). Để làm cho người khác thêm lòng hy vọng, đôi khi chỉ cần đối xử tử tế, sẵn sàng bỏ qua mọi chuyện và tỏ ra ân cần, mang đến nụ cười, nói lời khích lệ, lắng nghe một cách vô tư.’ (đã dẫn, 224)” (Sứ điệp mùa Chay, 2).

Lời khuyện thật khôn ngoan của Đức Thánh Cha! Hãy đối xử tử tế với mọi người. Chúng ta đã trải qua nhiều rồi, và như những người chuyên môn cho biết, cơn bệnh dịch chưa qua khỏi. Chúng ta đã trải qua một cuộc hành trình khó khăn và đầy giông bão. Trong khi nhiều người đã qua cơn giông bão an toàn trên con thuyền vững chắc, một số người khác phải trải qua cơn giông bão trên con thuyền nhỏ bé và bấp bênh. Những hành động cư xử tốt, dầu lớn hay nhỏ, dọi ánh sáng hy vọng vào đêm tối và nhắc chúng ta rằng chúng ta không đi một mình.

Và đó cũng chính là điều mà mùa Chay mang lại cho chúng ta trong năm dịch bệnh này: Hy vọng. Chúa Giê-su Ki-tô là nguồn hy vọng của chúng ta. (Thư 1 gửi Timôthê 1: 1). Trong Chúa Giê-su Phục sinh chúng ta nhận được sức mạnh và hy vọng trong cuộc hành trình khó khăn. Vào mùa Chay, chúng ta được mời gọi cùng bước đi với Chúa Ki-tô, Người lúc nào cũng gần bên ta. Và chúng ta ở gần Ngườì qua lời cầu nguyện, qua việc ăn chay, và bố thí.

Qua lời cầu nguyện, chúng ta đối thoại với Chúa Giê-su: chúng ta trải lòng ra với Người và để Người nâng đỡ chúng ta. Nhờ sự hiện diện của Người, chúng ta được an ủi. Qua việc ăn chay, chúng ta thật sự cảm nghiệm được sự liên hệ với Chúa Giê-su và thấy gần gũi với những người thiếu thốn. Khi làm Cha sở, tôi đã gặp nhiều cha mẹ âm thầm hy sinh cho con. Không phải họ làm như thế vì người Ki-tô hữu thường thích chịu khổ, nhưng khi yêu mến người nào chúng ta không quản ngại chịu hy sinh cho người ấy. Cũng thế, việc chúng ta yêu mến Chúa Giê-su không chỉ là một ý tưởng suông, nhưng là một điều cụ thể, bày tỏ điều mình muốn hy sinh cho người khác. Đó là việc bố thí! Là điều làm vui lòng Chúa: khi chúng ta đến với những ngườì thiếu thốn - bằng sự đối xử tử tế và mang niềm hy vọng!

Trong mùa Chay này, như Đức Giáo Hoàng Phan-xi-cô khích lệ, chúng ta hãy mang hy vọng đến cho người khác bằng những cử chỉ tốt đẹp, “lời nói êm dịu,” và bằng các thực hành cầu nguyện, ăn chay, và bố thí. Và trong khi cùng đồng hành với Chúa Giê-su trong 40 ngày trong sa mạc, chúng ta cùng nhau bước đi trong một cộng đồng Đức tin. Và như thế, chúng ta cùng đồng hành trong hy vọng!”

Arrepiéntanse y Crean en el Evangelio

La Cuaresma es la época del año que dedicamos a examinar nuestras vidas a la luz de nuestro Bautismo en la muerte y Resurrección de Jesús. Las lecturas de hoy son un catecismo abreviado de lo que significa estar bautizados. Co-mo Noé pasó por las aguas del diluvio a una alianza con Dios, así también nosotros entramos en una alianza, una relación con Dios, mediante nuestro Bautismo. La carta de Pedro da una explicación explícita de lo que nuestro Bautismo significa: un llamamiento que hacemos a Dios para que nos dé una conciencia tranquila. ¿Cómo po-demos obtener esta conciencia tranquila? Las palabras proclamadas por Jesús inmediatamente después de su tentación nos muestran cómo: “Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evan-gelio” (Marcos 1:15). Podría ser un buen ejercicio espiritual mantener estas lecturas ante nosotros durante todo el tiempo de Cuaresma, un medio que nos ayude a volver a una vida vivida por las promesas bautismales. Fiesta de la Fe Estar sentados en la liturgia

Nos sentamos en la liturgia no porque no haya nada que hacer o para ‘salir de la celebración’, sino para escuchar a Dios mismo que nos dirige su palabra, o bien, que se nos reve-la en el silencio posterior a la sagrada comunión. Al sentarnos nos disponemos para entrar en un diálogo con el Señor, medi-ante su palabra que nos es proclamada; disponemos todo nues-tro ser para escuchar la historia de amor entre Dios y el pueb-lo, siendo conscientes o no, de que ese pueblo somos nosotros mismos, de que esa historia es nuestra historia. Escuchamos una historia que no siempre será nueva en el relato mismo, pero sí en el efecto que este relato tiene en nuestra vida actual. La homilía, como momento de diálogo entre las lecturas y la vida diaria, nos brinda esa excelente oportunidad de entender qué es lo que Dios quiere de nosotros a raíz de lo que hemos escuchado. Así pues, estar sentados en la asamblea no es una actitud pasiva, sino receptiva, de quien se dispone totalmente a acoger la palabra de Dios que le es comunicada. Esta acción, realizada por cada persona, debe ser un movimiento de toda la asamblea, que en la medida de lo posible, rompe el aspecto mecánico y da intencionalidad y plenitud a esta acción tan particular de disponerse a la voz del Señor que su siervo escu-cha (1 Samuel 3:10). —Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. Domingo, 21 de febrero, 2021 Querido pueblo de la Parroquia de Santa Elizabeth de Portugal, Quedrán saber lo que he estado haciendo desde mi llegada aquí el primero de febrero. Me he estado familiarizando con la parroquia, conociendo a las personas y participando en los servicios diarios y en la liturgia de fin de semana. Volveremos a celebrar las misas diarias y de fin de semana al aire libre y también transmitiremos las misas del fin de semana en inglés, español y vietnamita. Así como trasmitimos la misa diaria en inglés. Agradezco a todos los ministros que participan en estas liturgias y a los técnicos que hacen las transmisiones. No sabemos cuando podremos celebrar la misa dentro del espacio de adoración, pero estamos ansiosos de poder hacerlo. Me alegró mucho celebrar la Fiesta del TET con la comunidad vietnamita y les agradezco por acogerme y por las hermosas flores y los sobres rojos que me obsequiaron. También agradezco a los miembros del Grupo del Sagrado Corazón por darme la bienvenida. Tube mi primera reunión con el Comité de Finanzas el martes 16 de febrero y con las personas de RCIA. Celebramos el Miércoles de Ceniza de una manera creativa y diferente a causa de la pandemia pero ésto nos preparó para entrar en la Temporada de Cuaresma con esperanza y compromiso. Tenemos unas ofrendas para todos durante la Cuaresma que publicaremos en el boletín, pero les invitamos a que vengan a la misa diaria si es posible, porque las lecturas de las Escrituras son poderosas y nos ayudarán en el proceso de conversión que todos necesitamos. También conocí a los líderes de Jóvenes Para Cristo y les agradezco su generosa oferta para ayudar a la parroquia con sus habilidades de liderazgo y su energía juvenil. Me reuní con Joseph Thu Huynh, presidente del Consejo Par-roquial y espero reunirme con el consejo en pleno en el futuro. También me reuní con Isabel Lutgardo de la Legión de María de habla hispana y me enteré del buen trabajo que está hacien-do la Legión. Todavía tengo que reunirme con más grupos y líderes, pero lo estoy haciendo lenta y gradualmente. Llegaré a más personas que gradualmente conoceré y les escucharé. Gracias por su bienvenida y por la amabilidad que me han mostrado, es un gozo servirles y estar con ustedes en esta her-mosa parroquia. Protéjase y Vacunése

Vacuna para COVID-19 Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, ¡El mundo entero ha pasado por un año difícil, si no devastador! Haríamos bien en seguir el consejo que el Papa Francisco nos ofrece para esta Cuaresma. Nos dice, “En la Cuaresma, estemos más atentos a ‘decir

palabras de aliento, que reconfortan, que fortalecen, que con-suelan, que estimulan,’ en lugar de ‘palabras que humillan, que entristecen, que irritan, que desprecian’ (Carta enc. Fratelli tutti [FT], 223). A veces, para dar esperanza, es suficiente con ser ‘una persona amable, que deja a un lado sus ansiedades y ur-gencias para prestar atención, para regalar una sonrisa, para decir una palabra que estimule, para posibilitar un espacio de escucha en medio de tanta indiferencia’ (ibíd., 224)” (Mensaje de Cuaresma, 2). ¡Es un consejo sabio de nuestro Santo Padre! Sean amables unos con otros. Todos hemos pasado por muchas dificultades y, como nos recuerdan los expertos, esta pandemia no ha terminado. Ha sido un viaje difícil, en el que todos nos hemos encontrado con mares tumultuosos. Mientras que algunos han resistido la tormenta en la seguridad de un barco grande y resistente, otros han enfrentado los mares en botes y balsas. Los actos de bondad, grandes y pequeños, hacen brillar la luz de la esperanza a través de la oscuridad y nos aseguran que no estamos solos en este viaje. Y eso es lo que nos ofrece la Cuaresma en este año de pandem-ia: Esperanza. Es Cristo Jesús quien es nuestra esperanza (1Tm 1,1). Jesucristo resucitado nos da fuerza y esperanza en un camino difícil. En la Cuaresma se nos invita a caminar cada vez más cerca de Cristo, quien siempre está con nosotros. Lo hacemos a través de la oración, el ayuno, y la limosna. En la oración, dialogamos con Jesús: le compartimos lo que cargamos dentro de nuestro corazón y escuchamos sus palabras de consuelo. Nos consuela su presencia. El ayuno hace que nuestra relación con Jesús sea real y nos une en solidardad con los necesitados. Como pastor, me he encontrado con muchos padres que se sacrifican por sus hijos en silencio como cosa natural. Lo hacen, no porque a los Cristianos nos guste sufrir. Más bien, cuando amamos a alguien, no lo pensamos dos veces para sacrificarnos por esa persona. Asimismo, es necesario que nuestro amor por Cristo no sea simplemente una idea, sino que sea concreto, compartiendo simbólicamente lo que renunci-amos a los demás. ¡Esto es limosna! Algo que realmente a grada a Dios: cuando nos acercamos a los necesitados, ¡actuando con bondad y dando esperanza! En esta Cuaresma, así como nos invita el Papa Francisco, llevemos la esperanza a los demás con actos de bondad, “palabras de aliento” y mediante nuestra oración, ayuno y limosna diaria. Mientras caminamos con Jesús por el desierto estos 40 días de Cuaresma, lo hacemos como una comunidad de fe. Por lo tanto, "¡caminaremos juntos en la esperanza!"

Durante la Cuaresma, se nos anima a poner nuestra fe en ac-ción. Una forma de hacer esto es pensar en otros que están en peligro; a través de nuestra limosna, podemos marcar la diferencia. Este año, puede ayudar enormemente reuniendo su cambio suelto. Llévelo a Misa o llévelo a la oficina. Su donación puede ayudarnos a combatir el hambre y la desnutrición, y ayudar a que el mundo sea un poco más brillante para alguien que lo necesite.

Todos los viernes a las 5:30 pm tendremos el Vía Crucis trilingüe.

El Vía Crucis será al aire libre, iremos en procesión visitando cada estación en nuestro estacionamiento.

Este será nuestro primer 2021 Vía Crucis, visitando las nueva imágenes que tenemos.
