The Word Today Zephaniah 3:14-18 Philippians 4:4-7 Luke 3:10-18
PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY It’s obvious from today’s Gospel that John the Baptist was a very practical man. Christianity is a very practical and social religion. It is not just a matter of God and me, but of God, me, and others. There is a story about a cobbler by the name of Martin who lived and worked in a basement room. Its one window enabled him to see just the feet of the passers-by on the street above. But since there was hardly a pair of boots or shoes that had not passed through his hands, he was able to identify the passers-by by their shoes. Life had been hard on him His wife died, leaving him with a young son. However, the son had barely reached the age when he could be of help to his father when he fell ill and died. Martin was devastated. After burying his son, he gave way to despair. At the same time he gave up the practice of his religion and took to the bottle. One day an old friend dropped in. Martin poured out his soul to him. His friend advised him to read little from the Gospels each day, promised him that if he did so, light and hope would come back into his life. Martin took his friend’s advice. At the end of each day he would take down the Gospels from the shelf and read a little. At first he meant to read only on Sundays, but he found it so interesting that he soon read every day. Slowly things began to change. Hope crept back into his life. One night as he sat reading he thought he heard someone calling him: “Martin, look out into the street tomorrow, for I will come to visit you”. Since there was no one else in the room, he reckoned it must have been the Lord himself who had spoken to him. When he sat down to his work next day he was very excited. As he worked he kept a close eye on the window. He scrutinised every pair of shoes or boots that passed above him. He was looking for someone special. But all he saw was the usual people passing by. In the early afternoon he saw a pair of familiar boots. They belonged to an old soldier called Stephen. Going to the window he looked up and saw the old man hitting his hands together for it was bitterly cold outside. Martin wished that he would move on, because he was afraid he might obstruct his view, and that he would not see the Lord when he passed. But old Stephen just stood there by the railing. Finally it occurred to Martin that maybe Stephen had nothing to eat all day. So he tapped on the window and beckoned him to come in. He sat him by the fire and gave him tea and bread. Stephen was most grateful. He said he hadn’t eaten for two days. As he left, Martin gave him his second overcoat as a shield against the biting cold. All the time Martin was entertaining Stephen he had not forgotten
the window. Every time a shadow fell on it he looked up but nobody special passed. Night fell. Martin finished his work and very reluctantly closed the window shutters. After supper he took down the Gospels and, as was his custom, opened the book at random. There his eyes fell on these words: The people came to John and asked “What must we do?” And he said: “If anyone has two coats he must share with the man who has none, and the one with something to eat must do the same.” Martin put down the book and reflected. He understood then that the Lord had indeed come to him that day in the person of Stephen, and that he had made him welcome. And his heart was flooded with joy, a joy the likes of which he had never before experienced. Martin had already received Christ into his life through a prayerful reading of the Gospels. So the second step followed naturally: to make room for him in the person of a needy neighbour. We are preparing for the Lord’s coming at Christmas. And we have not doubt that he will come and bring gifts to us. But he doesn’t come to us only at Christmas. He comes to us always, and at the oddest times and places, and wearing different disguises. He comes in the person in need. Advent urges us to prepare a way for the Lord. There is no better way to prepare than to be welcoming towards those in need. The way to find peace and happiness and goodness is to forget oneself and love others. New Sunday & Holy Day Liturgies, Year C, Flor McCarthy SDB

PRAYER FOR ADVENT O God we are one with You.
You have made us one with You.
You have taught us that if we are open to one another,
You dwell in us, And let us be bound together
with love As we go our diverse ways,
United in this one spirit Which makes You present in
the world, And which You witness to the ultimate reality that is love.
Love has overcome. Love is victorious.

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” PHILIPPIANS 4:6 St. Paul reminds us that our God is an abundant God, the ultimate giver of gifts. He promises to give us all that we need. When we trust that God will take care of us, it is easier for us to share what we have been given.
BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Our End of Year/Graduation Mass on Monday was a true celebration of a fantastic year at St Liborius. We came together as a faith community to thank the Lord for all that has been presented to us in the form of challenges and successes. The whole liturgy coordinated by Hollie Webster and beautifully led by Fr Antony and Fr Stephen Bolling, involved all of the students in various ways. This was the last Mass that Fr Antony will celebrate with our whole school community before he returns to India. It was also the first Mass celebrated with us by Fr Stephen who is our new Parish Priest. Thank you to all the families for making the effort to come out and support each other as well as our departing Year 6 students. The presentations and reflections at the end of Mass paid tribute to the 7 years the Graduating class have had at primary school as well as some outstanding achievements by individuals. Thank you to the Catholic Women’s League who provided a scholarship to Ava Francis for good citizenship and social justice, which will assist with attending catholic secondary school in Bendigo next year. The Eaglehawk Rotary Club award went to Dylan Thompson for outstanding example to others and who represents the values of our St Liborius school community. Thanks to Kerry Krenz for presenting the Peter Krenz Awards which went to Charlize Clark and Makayla Watts for showing good citizenship. The Sr Veronica Award for academic excellence was awarded to Brigid McGowan and Kevin Coronacion. Also the Watson Scholarship for outstanding sporting achievement went to Braye Moss and James Trew. The Bunnings Award, for respect of self, others and environment was awarded to Keira Stevens. The Jacob Holden Award was awarded to a Year 5 student who shows great strength of character. This was awarded to Zara Gibbs-Shelton. Well done to all of our award recipients. I would like to thank all the families who are leaving us at the end of this year. We appreciate your support during your time with us, and wish you and your family all the best as you move onto new adventures. We are very proud of our Year 6 Graduates. Our hope is that they may continue to give their best to everything that they do! We wish them success and happiness as they move into their secondary education. Thank you to Fr Antony for the engaging way he celebrated mass with us and for all of his support throughout 2016 to 2018. Fr Antony will be sadly missed but we know that he will continue his amazing work back in his homeland of India. Safe travels Fr Antony. Welcome Fr Stephen to St Liborius School. Catholic Capital Grants - It is fantastic to announce that the successful tender for Stage 3 works at St Liborius is Searle Brothers. This company were the successful builders who constructed Stage 1 and did a superb job, one which I’m sure they will replica with the refurbishment of the central building classrooms and the modification of the classrooms along Panton St. The main toilet block will also undertake a refurbishment and the Piety Store entrance revamped. Works will begin over the Christmas holidays and continue into the new year. Transition - Last week all of our students spent time with their new classmates and teachers for 2019. We also welcomed our new Preps for the morning who were extremely excited and a number of new families. The Yr 6’s ventured off to their new secondary school setting. Yr 6’s - Last Fr iday the Yr 6 students gathered with their parents and staff for a graduation dinner. Thank you to Emila Moss and her band of helpers who coordinated this event. On Wednesday 19th Dec they will participate in their ‘Big Day Out’. All the very best to our school leaders and thank you so much for all that you have contributed to our school community. Thank You - Our St Libor ius community have been such a support to one another this year with many assisting those in need within our school and beyond. The students have been exceptional and achieved so much this year. Parents and guardians have formed rich partnerships with the school and teachers have endeavoured to provide open lines of communication which has had a positive impact on the children’s learning. The staff have continued to be highly professional in their chosen vocation and their commitment to their work is to be commended. This has been acknowledged by many parents throughout the year. Also thank you to the staff leadership team who do a tremendous job in keeping their finger on the pulse and providing clear and informed direction for us all. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with the many fundraising events and services such as Father and Mother Day stalls. Thank you to our School Board under the leadership of Matthew Shanahan, for their representation of the parent body of St Liborius including the roll out of our community Code of Conduct. I encourage parents to take an active role in these parent bodies to enrich our school community. Also thank you to Meg Ferrie in the tuckshop for her commitment to providing this service and her band of volunteers each Friday. Thank you to Jo & James Margetts

ROSTERS
Post-Carols drinks (continued): The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back into the bar in a three-piece suit. The bartender says:
"You're looking sharp tonight, this could be a major development." Then E-flat strips off the suit, and stands there au natural. Even-tually, C sobers up, and realises in horror
that he's under a rest. C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the diminu-
tion of a minor. On appeal, however, C is found innocent; all accusations are bass-less. The bartender decides that since he's only had tenor so patrons, and everything has become alto much treble, he needs a rest
and closes the bar.
