ALL OUR GRATITUDETHE MOST REVEREND FREDERICK F. CAMPBELL
11th Bishop of the Diocese of Columbus2 0 0 5 – 2 0 1 9
March 24, 2019 Third Sunday of Lent
The Most Reverend Frederick Francis Campbell was born in Elmira, New York, the second of six children, to Edward and Dorothy Campbell. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis by Archbishop John Roach on May 31, 1980, and on March 2,1999, was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis by Pope John Paul II. He was named the eleventh Bishop of Columbus, Ohio, and he was installed as Bishop on January 13, 2005.
Following the church’s Code of Canon Law, upon reaching his 75th birthday Bishop Campbell submitted his resignation as Bishop of Columbus to Pope Francis, who accepted it on January 31, 2019. His successor, the Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, will be installed as Bishop of the Diocese of Columbus on March 29, 2019. The Most Reverend Campbell will serve as the Apostolic Administrator of Columbus until that time.
We thank Bishop Campbell for the many years he has shepherded the flock of the Diocese of Columbus and wish him a future full of faith, love and joy.

The parable in today’s Gospel clearly warns that we, like the fig tree, will be judged by our fruit. While God mercifully pro-vides us with time and opportunity, let us give witness to our faith with deeds of kindness and generosity!
From the Desk of Fr. Dooley The Diocese of Columbus is honored and excited this week to be welcoming Bish-op Robert J. Brennan to the great state of Ohio! The diocese will be having two liturgi-cal events for Bishop Brennan in which they have invited all clergy, religious, and two representatives from each of the 108 parishes and missions to attend. Fr. Hahn and I decid-ed to ask people from the Four County Con-sortium representing different aspects of par-
ish life. While these liturgies are ticketed, please see the bulletin about TV, radio, and online broadcasts of these events. Here is a brief over-view of those liturgical functions at St. Joseph Cathedral this week: Thursday March 28: Evening Prayer Service (Vespers) The Evening Prayer Service comes from the Liturgy of the Hours. This is a collection of hymns, psalms, Scripture Reading(s), and petitions that are prayed around the world by clergy, religious, and some of the laity. In this prayer service, Bishop Brennan will pre-sent his Apostolic Letter announcing his appointment as the 12th Bish-op of the Diocese of Columbus. Friday March 29: Solemn Mass of Installation The Mass of Installation will begin with an Installation Dia-logue from the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre (representative of the Holy Father), stating that the Holy Father in Rome has named Bishop Brennan as bishop of the diocese. After this brief statement, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr of Cincinnati (our metropolitan) will invite Bishop Brennan to enter St. Joseph’s Cathedral. At this moment, the Vicar General of the Diocese and the Rector of St. Joseph Cathedral will escort Bishop Brennan to the sanctuary. As soon as he enters the sanctuary, Bishop Brennan will ac-cept the crosier or staff that belonged to Bishop Sylvester H. Rosecrans (first name sound familiar, Zaleski?!), the First Bishop of the Diocese, as a symbol of apostolic succession. Bishop Rosecrans was the Bishop of the Diocese from 1868-1878. (Fun fact: When I was a student at Bishop Rosecrans High School in Zanesville, I remember Bishop Campbell bringing Bishop Rosecrans’ crosier to celebrate Mass with us). This moment in the liturgy is a special reminder of our history as a diocese and how we remember all those ancestors of our past. However, we cannot just remember the past, but we look at the future with hope in Jesus Christ. We keep in mind the demands of the 21st century and our response to those current questions and challenges. After the acceptance of the crosier or staff, Bishop Brennan will take his place at the cathedra or the seat. This is a sign of the bishop’s teaching office and pastoral authority over the diocese. More than likely, this liturgy will be attended by many visiting bishops around the country. I am pleased to announce that our St. Sylvester Parish representatives are: Vicki Harkins (representing those in educa-tion) and Bill Nose (representing the Parish Council). Please continue to pray for Bishop Campbell and Bishop Brennan this week and as we move forward as the Mystical Body of Christ. Have a great week! Fr. Dooley

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
Gospel Road: Willing to Help! The Church of the Resurrec-tion Youth Group in New Albany will be with us once again at St. Sylvester’s from June 9th-15th. For a week, they will be here for their annual Gospel Road event to help the wider Vinton County community with service pro-jects. After their work is completed each day, they use our parish and social hall for celebrating Mass, Eucharistic adoration, prayer, fellowship, and meals. Do you or do you know someone who could use help with home repairs? These include: building/repairing wheel-chair ramps, roofing, rotting porches, landscaping, etc. The group is better at outdoor projects, since their work crews tend to be big. If you are interested or know someone who is interested, please call Katy Wyatt, youth minister at Church of the Resurrec-tion, at (614) 855-0881. You may also contact Fr. Dooley at (740) 774-1407, ext. 5. Please contact us by Wednesday April 10th!
Lenten Penance Service The Lenten Penance Service will be held on Wednesday April 3rd. The evening will begin with Mass at 5:30pm. After Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (around 6:00pm) will take place while Confessions are being heard. The confessors for the evening will be Fr. David and Fr. Dooley. The evening will conclude with Benediction at 7:00pm or until all confessions are heard. If you haven’t gone to confession in awhile, the priest will be there to guide you. We hope to see you there! Dispensation for Friday March 29 Bishop Campbell has issued a decree granting all Catho-lics of the Diocese of Columbus a dispensation from the obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 29, 2019, in honor of the historic occasion of the Installation of the Most Rev. Robert J. Brennan as 12th Bishop of Columbus. Enjoy!

YEAR OF THE FAMILY
Celebrating Saints and Feasts to Enrich Hearts and Homes
Week of March 24, 2019 –
The Annunciation (March 25, Solemnity.) The fact of the An-nunciation is related to us in the Gospel of St. Luke (1:26-38) Mary is silent at the Angel’s salutation, who continues to reveal to her the mar-velous work God plans to accomplish in her. Mary’s question to the Angel; “How shall this be?” differs from that of Zechariah who asked “How can this be?” i.e. Mary asked thinking she may need to do some-thing to assist the plan (e.g. break her vow of virginity) whereas Zecha-riah asked out of incredulity and doubt. To reassure her that God will accomplish His plan solely because of her obedience, the Angel reveals to her the miraculous pregnancy of her cousin Elizabeth. Mary imme-diately goes “in haste” to assist her much older cousin because Love Incarnate demands action. Mary’s reply to the Angel, “Be it done unto me according to Thy word.” was the Fiat anticipated from before crea-tion and for all Eternity, and by it, God became man in the womb of The Virgin. Reflect on the scripture “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Jer. 1:5, along with Luke’s Annunciation narra-tive in defense of the life of the unborn. Consider forming the habit of praying the Angelus prayer at 6 AM, noon and 6 PM daily to honor the Virgin’s Fiat and God’s Love in His Incarnation. Here is a simple and inexpensive treat in honor of our Blessed Mother’s Fiat (YES) and the (traditional) feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This treat can be served for breakfast, snack, or dessert.
Recipe: Marian Blueberry ParFIAT (parfait)
Ingredients: 1 ½ c. vanilla yogurt ½ c blueberries ½ c granola 1 T honey Spoon yogurt into glass. Spoon granola overtop. Spoon fruit overtop. Repeat the process. Add honey between the layers as desired. Serves 1.
RECOMMENDED READING: The Glories of Mary (A Liguori Classic) – St. Alphonsus Liguori. Widely regarded as Saint Alphonsus Liguori's finest masterpiece, it has for two and a half centuries stood as one of the Catholic Church's greatest expressions of devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Read it – it will change your life and relationship with Mary!
