The Society Annual Banquet was held in the International Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. Following the banquet, Convention Chairman Ken Hope thanked his convention committee, reported the attendance figures, and introduced guest speaker John Tamplin, Editor of the Journal of the Orders and Medals Research Society of Great Britain.

Tamplin delivered greetings from the OMRS to OMSA, with an invi- tation to attend the 8th Convention of the OMRS in London. He noted that he had attended the meeting of the Military Collectors Club of Canada the previous weekend and that at this OMSA conven- tion were present, undoubtedly for the first time, the Editors of the OMRS Journal (himself), the MCC of C Journal (Captain Jack Boddington), and The Medal Collector (Mike Shaw). The title of Tamplin’s talk wa~--~M~als, Not Tombstones." He spoke of the great expansion of medal collecting since 1945, when he was a beginning collector, and his quest for photographs of the reci- pients of medals in his collection, to make it more meaningful. Tamplin observed that medals illustrate sacrifice and plain, or- dinary, loyal service. He illustrated his talk with slides of medals and pictures of the medals’ recipients, including military men, war correspondents, and civilians.

At the conclusion of the talk by the guest speaker, President Elliott introduced President-Elect Lee Bishop and Vice-President- Elect Peter Hlinka. He then introduced Editor Mike Shaw for pre- sentation of a new OMSA award, the Literary Award, presented for outstanding literary contribution to The Medal Collector. As these were the first Literary Awards author~-~d,---~was decided to in- clude the period 1981-1984 for consideration. In the future, such awards will be presented on a yearly basis.
