Heather with Happenings
Hi Everyone, Welcome to another year of AWBCSG’s tit tattler. Our group is looking forward to the year ahead when we will celebrate our 20th birthday in September.
Our final meeting for the year is our annual Christmas Lunch which was once again held at the Commercial Club. It was a great day with 41 ladies and 6 gentlemen enjoying the companionship and lovely meal. Thank you to Kathy for being ‘Santa’ and Di for being ‘Santa’s Helper’ and distributing the Kris Kringle gifts.
A big thank you to our members for supporting our raffle and helping us to raise $861. The lucky winners were 1st prize Kaz Stanway, 2nd prize Judy Mitchell, 3rd prize Tom Gordon and 4th prize Heather Knott. Kaz was delighted to receive the lovely quilt which was donated by Brave Heart member Narelle Haining.
It was lovely to be able to hold our first meeting for the year at the Canoe Club and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of the river as we ventured out onto the decking for morning tea. It was great to catch up with everyone again and find out how the holidays were spent.
The following day Marlene, Veronica and I set up an information table at the start/finish line of the Lake Hume Bike Challenge. It was lovely sitting under the shady trees in Noreuil Park being a visible presence in the community along with the other cancer groups– Prostate Cancer Group, GO Support (Gynecological and Ovarian Cancer), Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group ,Border Wellness Circle, as well as the Border Medical Oncology Research Unit and Hilltop, watching the bike riders return. It was great to have so many participate and raise over $25,000 for the Wellness Centre being built at the AWRCC.
Another very successful Dragon Boat Regatta was held by Brave Hearts on the weekend of February 28th/March 1st. It was wonderful to have more community teams wanting to compete this year. Everyone had a great day and the weather was perfect. Five dragon boats with cancer survivors took part in the Remembrance Ceremony out on the lake as others watched from the shore. The flotilla of hearts filled with messages of hope and for loved ones floated on the lake while Jacky de Jong– a Brave Heart and AWBCSG member- and Lynne Moriarty accompanied by Paul Gibbs on guitar sang ‘Make you feel my love’ by Adele and ‘You can count on me’ by Bruno Mars. Piper George Henderson from Scots School played Amazing Grace to complete the ceremony. A memorable day with many first time participants enjoying a ride in the wooden dragon boat which was built in 2005 by women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer with the assistance of several community members and Albury TAFE.
May is a busy month for fundraising– the annual Mothers’ Day Classic raising funds for breast cancer research, Baker’s Delight 15th Pink Bun Campaign raising funds for BCNA to support women diagnosed with breast cancer and the Cancer Council’s annual Biggest Morning Tea. I hope you are able to support these worthy causes.
I am looking forward to catching up with many of you at a meeting during the year. Until the next edition of the tit tattler take care and enjoy the autumn weather.

Breast screening saves lives
You may have seen reports in the media recently about the ‘over-diagnosis’ of breast cancer as a result of mammographic screening programs such as the one provided by Breast Screen Australia.
Over-diagnosis refers to the diagnosis of breast cancers which would not cause symptoms and would not otherwise be diagnosed in a woman’s lifetime. It does not mean that there is no cancer present, or that the cancer will go away.
On 18 February 2015 on the ABC’s 7.30 program, Professor Peter Gotzsche said he did not support mammographic screening because he believes it provides no survival benefit and that over-diagnosis results in healthy women being harmed from breast cancer treatments they did not need.
BCNA is concerned that this may lead women to believe that screening mammograms are not beneficial.
BCNA believes the benefits of screening far outweigh the negatives. There is strong scientific evidence that screening, along with improved breast cancer treatment, has reduced the number of deaths in Australia from breast cancer.
About 40 per cent of all breast cancers in Australia are detected by screening. Deaths from breast cancer have decreased by 29 per cent since BreastScreen Australia’s screening program was introduced in 1991. Australia now has the highest breast cancer survival rates in the world, with 89 per cent of women alive five years after diagnosis.
BCNA’s concern with the over-diagnosis debate is that doctors cannot always predict which cancers will spread and become harmful, and which will not. A decision about the best management of a small cancer, or pre-cancer, can be made at the time of diagnosis.
BCNA believes it is important that women continue to undergo regular screening mammograms as early detection is an important factor in survival.

Oncology Massage
We all like to be pampered but is a massage a good idea after a cancer diagnosis? Yes, especially if you
have an oncology massage by a trained therapist. Studies have shown that oncology massage reduces
the side effects experienced by conventional treatment of cancer and the symptoms of the disease
itself, improving the quality of life for cancer patients.
Massage therapists complete further training with OMT (Oncology Massage Training– currently held at
the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre) to provide them with the awareness and
expertise to modify and adjust conventional massage for their clients with a history or diagnosis of
cancer while being mindful of any contradictions for massage and ensuring a safe and effective
treatment.
Oncology is not just for people with cancer, anyone with fragile health will benefit. It is a gentle
relaxing form of massage, applied with mindfulness which focuses on the clients’ physical and emotional
comfort during the treatment. Oncology massage can offer huge benefits to many.

1st in Pink Ribbon (cancer
survivors and their female
supporters). We blitzed all
3 races! 1st in Masters Mixed
in great times, 4th in Premier
Open and 5th in Premier Women (pipped out of a place in the final
by a dragon’s whisker.) Congratulations to Lisa on passing her
sweeps course and sweeping her 1st regatta races!
Well done Dr Lisa.
Our own regatta on the weekend of Feb 28th/Mar 1st. What a
great success both days were, both on and off the water with 23
Community teams competing on the Saturday. Chris and Kevin
Gabriel did a superb job as co- coordinators. Once again, a brilliant
band of volunteers kept the regatta running smoothly. Our cancer
survivors won back the Lina Mildren Memorial Trophy on Saturday
afternoon which was followed by the beautiful remembrance
ceremony. On Sunday, 10 of our male paddlers took out the Masters
Opens 10s final, in a thrilling race. We were placed 2nd in the
Masters Women's 10s, 4th in the Masters Women's 20s and 2nd in
the Masters Mixed 20s.
13 of our best paddlers are combining with 15 Warriors to form the
Vic Regional team to compete at the Nationals in Perth in April. Our
very own Mike Beazley was selected as coach of this team.
More about the Nationals Regatta next news letter.
A reminder that pleasure cruising is on Sunday afternoons for
those who want a gentle exercise. We would love you to join us.
Times vary so phone Pauline on 0408 692 935 to enquire.
