Saint Teresa of Avila tells the story about when her mother died when she was only twelve years old. She writes, “When I beg an to understand what I had lost, I went, afflicted, before an image of our Lady and besought her with many tears to be my Mother.” Through the gift of motherhood we are blessed with the assurance of belonging. In speaking of the Mother of God, Blessed Guerric of Ingy says that “the womb that once gave birth continues to bring forth the fruit of her tender compassion. Mary is the Mother of him who is the life by which all things live.” Magnificat, May 2012 Peter John Cameron, O.P.

One way to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, as we do in the month of May, is to consider what our life would be like without her.

Mary the Immaculate Conception

Devoid of the certainty of the Immaculate Conception we would wonder how the pure Son of God could ever come forth from a fallen daughter of Eve. And that wonder would lead to suspicion and doubt concerning the very humanity of Jesus Christ. The defined dogma reassures us about the immaculateness of Christ’s life by di-recting us to its immaculate human origin.

In fact, the Fall has tainted the way that all of us think about God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of Adam and Eve becoming “afraid of the God of whom they have conceived a distorted image” (399). How do we get past the distorted conception of God that we bear as a result of original sin? The answer is Mary the Immacu-late Conception. God does not want us to conceive of his goodness as a notion or as an idea because that would tempt us to l ive according to our own understanding…and that is what did in Adam and Eve. No, God’s goodness is not something abstract; it is as concrete and personal as the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary the Immaculate Conception is the way that we are to conceive of the holi-ness of God. He makes it plain in her pure flesh.

Moreover, our Lady’s exalted holiness, says Blessed John Paul II, is to encourage all Christians to open themselves to the sanctifying power of the grace of God. The dazzling richness of grace that we see in Mary the Immaculate Conception is meant to move us close to her, begging for a share in her fortune. And Mary readily complies because she is our Mother. That is why Saint Louis de Montfort calls Mary the immense “treasure of the Lord, by whose plenitude people are made rich.”

The Annunciation

Without knowledge of the mystery of the Annunciation we would live in perpetual wonderment about the manner in which the Son of God was made incarnate. But how in fact do we know about this historical event? The only human being who witnessed it was the Mother of the Son of God. Therefore, the reason why we know about the Annunciation is because Mary herself told us about it.

But why does our Lady share such intimate testimony with the whole world? Because Mary knows that what we want deep down is exactly what happened to her. What is the most elemental thing about us as human beings? To be human is to be expectant await-ing for the Infinite. What we desire more than anything else is to encounter God in the union of his perfect goodness. We want heaven to come close to us, to speak our name, to espouse us, and to promise us that the Infinite is for ever ours to have and to hold in the flesh. But such a longing seems like an inconceivable dream…until God gives us himself in Mary. And Mary reveals the de-tails of the Annunciation to us precisely to inspire us to entrust ourselves to her. Maybe an angel is not going to make an annuncia-tion to us, but the graces of Mary’s miraculous encounter are destined to be ours through our union with the Mother of God. That is why we pray the Angelus: we are begging for the miracle of the Annunciation to repeat itself in our life through the maternal me-diation of Mary. What happened to Mary at the Annunciation can happen to us through her.

The maternity of Mary

Where would we be without Mary as our Mother? Adam didn’t have a mother, and look at all the trouble that got him into. When we experience excruciating pain or fear, the person we cry out for is our mother. What if we did not have the Mother of God to cry out to? We would go in search of her. Without the Mother of God to love, we would feel a huge emptiness – a lack – in our life. Saint Teresa of Avila tells the story about when her mother died when she was only twelve years old. She writes, “When I began to understand what I had lost, I went, afflicted, before an image of our Lady and besought her with many tears to be my Mother.”

Through the gift of motherhood we are blessed with the assurance of belonging. Blessed John Paul II points out that “motherhood is a relationship of person to person: a mother is not only mother of the body or of the physical creature born of her womb, but of the person she begets.” We constantly return to the Mother of God through our devotion in order to become more perfectly the persons we are destined to be. In speaking of the Mother of God, Blessed Guerric of Ingy says that “the womb that once gave birth continues to bring forth the fruit of her tender compassion. Mary is the Mother of him who is the life by which all things live.”

Cardinal Dolan chosen by Time magazine as one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World”

“Good evening, everybody. It sure is a joy and an honor to be here with you, such distinguished and gracious company. When the extraordinarily gracious folks from Time magazine came to visit with me in preparation for this happy occasion, one of them asked who I would consider the most influential person in my life. ‘That’s a no-brainer,’ I replied. ‘Jesus Christ is the most influential person in my life.’ The kind journalist clarified: I’m sorry, I should have been more precise: the person has to be alive now.’ ‘Same answer!’ I came back. ‘Jesus Christ!’ Jesus Christ is alive; that’s the significance of the feast we celebrated two weeks ago, on the Sun-day called Easter. ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead?’ the angel asked those faithful women at the empty tomb down the slope from a hill called Calvary where He had been executed three days prior on a Friday strangely termed Good. Colleagues, neighbors and friends: thanks for letting me toast this most influential person, confi-dent as I am that many of you share my sentiments. I admit He is a person of bewildering paradox: true God, yet true man; God’s son, yet born in a stable; architect of the world, without a home of His own; creator of the world’s resources, yet Himself possessing only the seamless garment He wore to the cross for which His executioners cast lots; a king whose throne was a cross, whose crown was of thorns; coming to bring mercy, but Himself condemned to death; dead at a mere 33, yet alive forever; a man of peace, whose followers have tragically waged violence in His Holy Name; a man of love whose heart is broken by the sin, hatred, and division in the members of the Church He founded, even in its leaders, including me. Yet, He never gives up on us, asking only our love, faith, and trust; I toast Him as my Lord and Savior; I toast Him as my best friend; I believe He’s here with us this evening. He who invites each of us to enjoy with Him a future banquet of eternal life in heaven. And I toast all of you influential people for your patience in letting me toast Jesus Christ, the most influential person in my life.”

ALBERTUS MAGNUS MOCK TRIAL TEAM

Congratulations to the Mock Trial Team for another successful season of courtroom drama. The team advanced to the Rockland County finals and lost a close competition to Nyack High School. The competitions are sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and involve teams from high schools throughout Rockland County. The teams argue both sides of a virtual court case through-out the year in Clarkstown Town Court. Local Rockland lawyers and judges act as the judge and preside over the trials. Winners are based on arguments and adherence to rules of evidence established by the State of New York. The team is coached by social studies teacher, Chris Power and Ken Zemsky, alumnus, P’15. FROM THE OFFICE OF CAMPUS MINISTRY Lent has passed and we are now in the season of Resurrection and new life. The young men and women here at Albertus continue to connect with Campus Ministry in what-ever ways they can, bringing their unique gifts and talents to serve others and taking op-portunities as they arrive to nurture their own spiritual life.

RETREATS Our final two retreats take place in May. The Freshman retreat was conducted on May 3rd by the Maryknoll Sisters who have chosen the theme of: Making God’s Love Visible: Caring for Others by Car-ing for the Earth. It was held at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in West Nyack, NY. The Dominican Sisters are delighted to be hosting our sophomores on May 18th where Sr. Renee and Sr. Valarie will challenge them to deepen their experience of God both personally and through others.

OUTREACH

On Tuesday of Holy Week, 60 students volunteered to participate in a Fast-A-Thon to help support the efforts of Meals on Wheels of Rockland. The students purchased wrist bracelets as a sign that they were making a special sacrifice on behalf of the poor and shut in senior citizens of Rockland. They fasted from dinner the night before and continued until 2 P.M. the following day when they were served a sim-ple meal of soup and bread prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff. One student stated at the end of the fast: “I feel good on the inside and the outside because I know my fast made a difference.” We also continue to deepen our commitment to Life by helping to support BirthRight of Rockland. Our students held a cupcake raffle which allowed anyone who purchased a cupcake to be entered to win 2 tickets to “BirthRight Night” at the Rockland Boulders game in July. It was an offer one could not re-fuse and the student fed body and spirit for a good cause. The members of the Campus Ministry/Pro-Life group will be meeting in June to evaluate the year and

explore new projects.

The 2012 Falcon Parents’ Club Dinner & Auction Most Successful Ever!!

This spring’s Parents’ Club Dinner & Auction is the largest single fundraiser that the school has ever pro-duced, with over $80,000 netted for the work to rehabilitate our biology lab/classroom. This year’s gathering was significantly enhanced by the presence of two all-time great NY Giants Football alumni, Mr. Jim Burt and Mr. O. J. Anderson, both of whom were members of Super Bowl Championship Teams from the 1986 & 1990 seasons. Mr. Anderson “wowed” the crowd of 320 guests as he took on the role of auctioneer and brought energy and excitement to the Oral Auction segment of the evening’s proceedings. His ability to engage with the audience and motivate stronger bids made a real difference for the event’s “bottom line”. As has become an important tradition, the work of the Auction Committee in all facets of the gathering made this year’s celebration another smooth-running affair that truly is a Rockland County “original”! One other major wrinkle to this year’s event was the addition of a “Car Raffle” with the Palisades Mazda & Volvo Dealership in West Nyack providing at cost a 2012 Mazda 3 iSport sedan that prompted more dollars and excitement for the Auction. Mr. Dave Reid of Rivervale, NJ was the lucky car winner. Our second large prize award—the Super 50/50 Raffle—gave $9,500 in winnings to Mr. Ed Onderdonk of Stony Point, NY—again, the best showing ever for that exercise! The effort and support of our newer classes and their families was one other important feature in 2012, as they learned from their older AM Parent “brethren” and provided much-needed labor and capital to the event. Lastly, it should be noted that the Senior Class helpers were a tremendously energetic and committed group of workers. Their vigorous efforts gave this happening a wonderful spirit of hope and real appreciation. Go Falcons!

May 2012 Dear Parents, It is a proud tradition of the Albertus Magnus Parents Club to provide a luncheon and small gift to our dedicated faculty and staff. We will be hosting this year’s luncheon at the school on Monday, May 21st. We certainly appreciate how supportive our school families are and once again ask for your assistance. We are requesting a donation of your favorite food dish, a monetary contribution and/or assistance with set up/clean up and serving our teachers. If you plan to make a monetary contribution, the suggested donation is $20.00 per fam-ily; however please donate an amount most comfortable for you. Kindly make checks payable to Albertus Magnus High School. You may send your contribution to the school in an envelope marked Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.
