The Sparkill Dominicans

The Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary was founded by Mother Catherine Mary

Antoninus Thorpe on May 6, 1876 in the Convent of Our Lady of the Rosary on 2nd Avenue in New

York City. It was also the home of the St. Joseph Mission which sheltered young girls and women

and the poor and sick of New York City. In 1884, Mother Dominic purchased the property in Sparkill

and opened St. Agnes Home for Boys which eventually became the official Motherhouse, Novitiate,

and Infirmary. The Community’s main mission was to care for the poor, orphans and indigent

women. However, in 1890, Rev. P.J. O’Meara of St. John Church in Piermont asked the Sisters to

staff his school which continued for seven years. In 1897, Rev. James Crosby petitioned the

Community to staff St. Ann’s in Nyack where the Sisters remained for twenty-seven years. For 130

years, many schools and missions have been and still are staffed by the Sparkill Dominicans in New

York State, New York City, Missouri, Maryland, Montana, Pakistan, and Peru.

History of Albertus Magnus High School

At the request of Cardinal Spellman in the early 1950's, the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill took upon

themselves the full responsibility for the entire project that would be Albertus Magnus High School. In

July of 1957, the Dominican Sisters purchased the property at the intersection of 304 and Germonds

Road and thus began the journey. This awesome task moved swiftly. Instead of waiting for the

September of 1959, Albertus officially opened in September of 1957 in the new St. Catharine's Grade

School, Blauvelt. By September of 1960, the new school and convent were ready for occupancy.

Since the first graduating class in 1961, 7,749 students have had the privilege of receiving a quality

education in a school dedicated to Catholic doctrine and Gospel values. The school is accredited by

the Board of Regents of the State of New York and by the Middle States Association of Schools.

Albertus has always been dedicated to providing quality education in Rockland County and has

sought to encourage the young men and women to look beyond self to the enduring values of trust

and service to the community. Many of our graduates have distinguished themselves by attending

prestigious colleges and now hold noble positions in the business market.

Academic Portal

In addition to quarterly progress reports and report cards, student’s grades are now accessible to

parents throughout each marking period through an academic portal. Parents will receive a password

at the beginning of the school year to access the student’s grades on an ongoing basis through the

Albertus Magnus website. The portal will enable parents to remain current on the student’s progress.

The system will enable parents to work in conjunction with teachers in recognizing student

achievements as well as identifying subject areas that may need attention.

Albertus Magnus offers Advanced Placement, College Level, and Honors courses which are intended

to provide additional challenges within the standard areas of the curriculum. Some students may opt

to take seven classes after freshman year, allowing more elective opportunities; however, this would

require foregoing the traditional lunch period within the schedule.

Once courses have been selected, it is not possible to change classes (an exception will be made

during the first quarter only for students who find an honors course(s) too difficult for them, or teacher

recommends the change). Courses changes after schedules have been finalized may result in

changes to other classes.

School Policy for Honors, Advanced Placement and College Courses

Any student interested in taking more advanced courses must obtain Department approval. Students

will be provisionally accepted based on grades through the first semester; however, such acceptance

is contingent upon the final grade at the conclusion of the academic school year. Students not

accepted at the time of course selection will have the opportunity to reapply at the end of academic

school year if the final grade meets the course prerequisite and if there is room in the class.

National Honor Society Qualifications

The following qualifications must be met in order to become a member of the English, Foreign

Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Honor Societies:

• 90% average at the end of three years of study in the given subject area

• At least an 85% on all Regents examinations in the given subject area. (New York State has

designated a grade between 85% and 100% as “passing with distinction” or “mastery

knowledge” of the content area)

• Service in related subject area

To be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, a student must first qualify for

membership in three of the five academic honor societies and have an overall average of 90.

The administration will select the valedictorian and the salutatorian based on final average and

strength of schedule. The number of AP courses that the student has taken will be taken into

consideration in the selection of the students for these academic honors.

School Rules and Regulations

Academic Standards

Albertus Magnus High School is a college-preparatory school for students of excellent academic

potential and ability who have well-disciplined study habits. Although all students are welcomed at

Albertus, we do have limited educational programs contained in Resource Rooms and/or Special

Education classrooms.

Conformity to School Regulations

The conformity of students to the rules and regulations of this school is essential for maintaining a

learning environment in which all students are able to develop their talents to the greatest degree

possible. The Administration will insist on the observance of all regulations in order to maintain the

excellence and quality of education that both faculty and parents desire. Any parent who is not willing

to give complete support to the Administration in the implementation of the philosophy of this school

must transfer his/her child to another school. If a student is not able or willing to conform to all of the

regulations, including dress code and hairstyle, then another school should be selected.

Non-Discriminatory Policy

Albertus Magnus High School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the

rights, privileges and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

Albertus Magnus High School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national and ethnic

origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan

programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

Purpose and Use of Handbook

The Handbook exists to foster the efficient operation of Albertus Magnus High School. To meet this

objective, the school Administration is given flexibility and the ability to exercise discretion. In

appropriate circumstances, the Principal has the discretion to take actions other than those specified

in the Handbook. This Handbook is not intended and should not be considered to create any

additional rights for students or parents/guardians.

Schedule Changes

1. Schedule changes are not made based on teacher preference.

2. Parents who would like a schedule change for their child, must follow the following procedure:

a. A written request for the change from the parents should be given to the student’s

subject teacher.

b. This request should clearly state the reason for the change.

c. This request will then be forwarded to the appropriate Department Chairperson for

review. A recommendation will be made to his/her Guidance Counselor.

d. A final decision will be made by the Principal.

3. Adjustments to student schedules will not be made after September 23.

4. After September 23, a course cannot be dropped until the conclusion of the first semester.

First semester grades will remain on the student’s record.

5. No course can be dropped after the first week of the third quarter.

6. Seniors, please note that colleges will be notified of any changes to your course schedule that

occur after you have submitted college applications.

Advancement to the Next Grade

In order for a student to advance to the next grade in Albertus Magnus High School, he/she must

receive a passing grade in every subject assigned during the school year, and he/she must have a

satisfactory record of deportment. If a student received a failing grade in one or two subjects, he/she

must take these subjects in an approved summer school. A student who fails to do so may NOT

return to Albertus Magnus. If a student receives failing grades in two or more subjects at the end of

the year, that student must transfer to another school. In addition, if a student’s record of deportment

during the school year has not been satisfactory, that student will NOT be invited back to Albertus

Magnus High School.

Credits and Summer School

1. A student who fails a departmental test or Regents exam will not have to attend summer

school provided he/she passes on the final average. A student who fails in the final course

average must attend summer school to receive credit and be allowed to advance into the next

year in high school. Students who fail a Regents Exam must sign up to repeat that Regents

exam in August. A student who retakes a Regents exam will have the highest grade recorded

on the transcript, though the Final Grade will not be recalculated because of exams retaken.

2. Students may enroll only in an accredited summer school. Students must verify their

registration in approved summer school programs with the Guidance Department at the end of

the school year in June.

3. An official grade report must be mailed directly to Albertus Magnus, so that the permanent

record may be updated. Students who fail to follow these procedures will not be invited to

return to Albertus Magnus.

4. In the event a student receives a failing grade in a special subject (e.g., physical education,

health, special electives, etc.), that failure must be removed by the student via a summer

assignment or project as designated by the teacher before advancement into the next grade.

Report Cards

Report cards are issued four times a year. The minimum passing grade in each subject is sixty-five

percent (65%). Conferences for parents/guardians are scheduled after the first quarter report card by

accessing the school’s website. A parent/guardian is encouraged to contact the teacher of a class to

discuss the student’s progress.

1. Each marking period grade is determined by the subject teacher on the basis of quizzes,

homework, examinations, effort, or special assignments given during the marking period.

2. The grade of incomplete (INC) is not given on a report card unless a serious medical reason or

extraordinary circumstances warrant it. If the incomplete is not removed by a date determined

by the Administration the incomplete becomes an “F”. All “incompletes” must be approved by

the Assistant Principal.

3. The lowest marking period or examination grade to be entered on the report card for the first

three quarters is 50%. For an exception to this rule, the approval of the Principal is required.

The lowest grade for the final marking period and for the final examination will be determined

by the teacher.

4. Examination Policy--Missing an examination

a. Forgetting the correct time of an exam, misreading the examination schedule, etc. will

mean that a student will receive an “F” for that examination.

b. If a student arrives late for an examination, he/she will not receive additional time to

complete the examination.

c. Missing an examination for a legitimate reason (illness, death in the family, accident,

etc.) will not constitute a “50” in the examination. The parent or guardian must call the

school before 8:00 a.m. to report the problem and the student must bring in an

authorized written document, such as a physician’s statement. The student will make

up this examination on a day scheduled for this purpose. Determinations as to what

constitute a legitimate reason are reserved to the Administration.

5. Formal tests are scheduled in January and June. In addition to the quarterly report cards,

teachers will send to the parents an Academic Deficiency Report, if a student is not performing

up to academic standards and is in danger of failing a subject. These reports will be sent home

midway between marking periods as required. Parents are encouraged to monitor the Parent

Portal and contact teachers concerning their children’s progress.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the unauthorized use of another person’s language or ideas and the representation of

them as one’s original work. Our policy on honesty is simple: Cheating, in any guise whether giving

or receiving information, is morally wrong and will not be tolerated. As a Catholic community, it is vital

that each member appreciates and practices a strong code of ethics.

The use of electronic and telecommunication devices is prohibited during school hours unless

authorized by the teacher as part of a lesson. Any student who has been identified as using any of

these devices during an exam will automatically be viewed as cheating and as trying to give or gain

an unfair advantage with regards to the test. It should also be noted that there are specific regulations

and punishment described by the New York State Board of Education regarding such incidents during

the administration of the New York State Regents Examinations to include automatic disqualification

from the exam.

The student has the responsibility of conducting herself/himself in a manner that is above suspicion.

This same responsibility applies to all classroom performance, daily and weekly quizzes and tests,

homework assignments, or plagiarized works.

If it is determined that the student has violated the code of conduct regarding honesty and academic

performance the following will occur:

• The teacher will contact the student’s parents.

• The student will be assigned a “zero” on the assignment paper, quiz or test.

• The teacher will inform the Dean of Students.

• Suspension or expulsion may be warranted for repeat offenders.

Honor Roll

An Honor Roll is established four times each year. At the close of the first and third quarters, the

Honor Roll is determined by a student’s grade point average for the quarter. At the close of the

second quarter the Honor Roll is determined by the student’s semester grade point average. A failure

in either the first or second quarter, or the exam, will exclude a student from the Honor Roll. At the

close of the fourth quarter the Honor roll is established based upon the student’s grade point average

in a course. Grades are weighted for Honors, Advanced Placement, and College courses. Updated

weights can be retrieved from our school profile. Weights are not included in a straight grade

average. Weights are included only in grade point average.

• First Honors: A student must have an average of 95% with no failing grade in any subject or

exam.

• Second Honors: A student must have an average of 90% with no failing grade in any subject

or exam.

• Students enrolled in an AP course MUST take the AP exams in May in order to have “AP”

designation and weight noted on their transcript and report cards.

• The non-refundable fee for AP exams must be made to the appropriate teacher by the last day

of classes of the second quarter. Once a student has enrolled in an AP course, they will not be

permitted to drop the course after September 27.

• If payment is not made by this time the student will dropped from the AP course for the second

semester and moved to a different course. This change will be reflected on the student’s report

card, midyear report, and transcript. Please contact your school counselor for information

about fee waivers, if appropriate, the first week of classes.

Eligibility for Activities and Athletics

We strongly recommend that all Albertus Magnus students get involved in school activities. The

range is great--academic, cultural, social, religious and athletic. To join an activity, a student is

advised to see the moderator or coach of that activity. Intramural and Interscholastic activities take

place after school. It is the policy of this school, in keeping with local and state regulations, that

students wishing to try out for and/or participate on an inter-scholastic team must be examined by a

physician.

1. A student shall be eligible for interscholastic competition provided he/she has not reached

his/her nineteenth birthday before September 1st. A student is eligible for interscholastic

competition until the expiration of eight consecutive semesters following entrance into the ninth

grade.

2. A student must fulfill all the eligibility requirements of:

a. Albertus Magnus High School

b. New York State Interscholastic Athletic Association

3. A student transferring to Albertus Magnus must petition the Athletic Director for a transfer

waiver form unless there has been a bona fide change of residence. The student must have

on file in the Athletic Director’s office a record that he/she has been examined by his physician

within 60 days of try-outs for a sport. The student must also have filed a parent (guardian)

permission form and a medical emergency release form with the Athletic Director.

4. A student who is suspended by the school Administration is automatically suspended from

attendance at and/or participation in interscholastic athletics and other school activities such as

dances, music and drama productions, school trips, etc. for the duration of that suspension.

5. Students participating in interscholastic athletics and/or activities, who, during the course of a

marking period are failing two or more subjects, will be placed on academic probation for a

period of two weeks. Such students may not practice or compete in any team events/activities

until the end of the probation period.

6. At the end of this two-week period the student must pick up academic probation forms from the

Guidance Counselor. Students must have these forms completed by the teachers involved

with the failure or failures, and then return the forms to the Guidance Counselor.

7. Absence from school will make a student ineligible for any activity on the day of the absence.

A student who arrives after 2nd period without a valid excuse is not permitted to participate in a

game or practice, play practice, review classes, club meetings, etc. that particular day.

Coaches and moderators will be advised of the student’s absence from school.

8. A student who is scheduled to serve detention on a specific day must do so before reporting to

a practice, game, or any other meeting.

9. A student who fails to observe school regulations will be dismissed from all athletic activities.

Any student on an athletic team who is found to be in the possession of, or involved with

drugs, alcohol or other banned substances will be subject to the major school policy in regard

to drugs and alcohol to include suspension or expulsion.

10. Any time a student cannot attend a practice he/she must inform his/her coach or the Athletic

Director. Anyone breaking this rule more than once may be subject to suspension.

Early Dismissal

Students who must leave school early must present an early dismissal note signed by a parent. This

note must be presented to an administrator for approval before Second Period. Students must

present this approved note to the teachers whose classes they will miss. Students must sign out in

the Attendance Office before leaving. Parents are asked to schedule doctor and dentist

appointments outside of school time when it is possible.

Lateness

The first bell of the school day rings at 8:12 am. First period begins at 8:17 am. A student who is late

will be issued a late pass by the Attendance Office, which must be presented to the subject teacher.

Unexcused lateness will result in a 30-minute detention to be served on that day. Students arriving

after 9:00a.m. will be required to serve a full detention. Students who accumulate an excessive

amount of unexcused lateness may lose privileges which may include inability to participate in

extracurricular activities or loss of driving and parking privileges.

Excused Lateness

A parent note and/or phone call is required for students who arrive late. When the lateness is

because of a medical appointment, the student needs to submit a note from the doctor’s office.

Cases of excessive excused lateness, 3 or more per semester, will be reviewed by the Administration

and a detention may be issued. (See Attendance Policy for state requirements regarding attendance.)

Lockers

Lockers are school property which students are permitted to use during the school year. Students

are not permitted to write on lockers or to place stickers or posters on them. Defacing lockers is

considered an act of vandalism. The lockers should be locked at all times. The school is not

responsible for stolen items. Students must use the locker that is assigned to them in September.

Students are to see that the lockers are kept clean and free of unnecessary debris. Students are

advised not to give the combination of his/her locker to anyone. Since lockers are considered school

property, they can be checked by the school administration with appropriate cause.

Library

Books are circulated to the students for a period of three weeks and may be renewed for an

additional three-week period if there is no other request for them. Overdue notices are issued to the

students who do not return books on time, and a fine of five cents per day is charged for each

overdue book. Students must pay for all books that they lose. Videos may be checked out but must

be returned before homeroom the following morning. Periodicals do not circulate.

State Books

State books are property of New York State. Books must be returned at the end of the school year.

If books are lost they must be paid for. Students are subject to a fine for damaged books.

Automobiles

Only juniors and seniors are permitted to drive to school. Cars must be registered with the school.

The annual parking fee is $150. Stickers will be issued for the car’s windshield along with a

designated parking spot. A contract will be signed by both parents and students. Parents need to

sign a consent form to allow students to drive students other than siblings or to ride as passengers in

a car driven by another student. Students cannot go to their cars during the school day without

permission from a teacher. Any student operating their vehicle on school grounds in a reckless

manner will be subject to loss of driving privileges and disciplinary action.

Cafeteria

Each student is expected to practice good manners and courtesy; to leave the table and surrounding

area clean and orderly; to replace chairs and trays; to dispose of waste properly. Off campus lunches

are not permitted. No one is permitted to go to his/her car for any reason during lunch periods. No

one is permitted to go to his/her locker during lunch time. Students are not to be in the gym or gym

locker room during lunch periods unless they have a scheduled class. Students are not allowed to

bring food or drinks to any other part of the building except the cafeteria.

Phone Calls

Students are NOT permitted to receive personal phone calls during the school day. Only in cases of

emergency will messages be relayed to the student.

Cell Phone Policy

The use of electronic devices of any kind is strictly prohibited on school property during school hours.

If students choose to bring their cell phones to school, the phone should be stored in the student’s

locker or school bag and should be turned “OFF”.

Any student who is found in violation of the cell phone policy and it is her/his first offense will have the

cell phone removed and can retrieve the cell phone from the administration at the end of the school

day.

A second violation of the cell phone policy by an individual student will result in the phone being

removed and a full detention issued. The student can retrieve the phone the following school day. If

the device is confiscated on a Friday or before a holiday, the student will not be able to pick it up until

the first day back from the holiday or on a Monday after the weekend.

More than two cell phone violations will result in two detentions and the phone will be taken away. A

parent or guardian must come in to retrieve the phone and discuss a strong resolution.

Any student found to be using an electronic device during an examination or any occasion in which

he/she is trying to gain an unfair advantage on any type of academic assessment will automatically

have the device confiscated. The phone will not be returned until a parent or guardian comes in to

meet with the teacher or a member of the administration. The student will receive a grade of 0% on

the examination in question.

The Albertus Magnus Administration will make the final judgment in all cases involving possible cell

phone violations. The administration reserves the right to confiscate the device whenever this

regulation is violated.

Information Technology Policies and Procedures

The following policies are to be followed by Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Guests of Albertus

Magnus High School. The information technology equipment at Albertus Magnus High School is

intended to further the educational program of the school either by providing access to educational

material or as a tool to perform educational activities including learning, researching, creating reports

and presentations or other similar authorized activities. Use of the school’s technology is to be for

these intended purposes only; any violation of the guidelines listed below will result in disciplinary

action.

School technology includes personal computers and peripheral devices, school-supported laptops or

tablets, software, printers, WiFi, network and related management devices.

General Technology Policy

Everyone will be issued their own Network User ID for PC/laptop/tablet login and a Microsoft Office

365 User ID to access email Microsoft Office applications and OneDrive (Cloud-based file storage).

Some users will potentially be issued additional User IDs for other purposes. Each person is

responsible to practice ethical use of technology. Violations will result in disciplinary action that can

include loss of privileges, detention, suspension, and expulsion depending on the seriousness of the

offense.

The following actions are considered prohibited use of technology:

1. Sharing a User ID with another person or using another person’s User ID.

2. Deleting, copying or modifying any data, files or configurations belonging to another user,

computer or system.

3. Use of the school computers or supported computers (this includes student laptops), printers,

network or Internet services for non-educational or unauthorized purposes. This includes, but

is not limited to the following:

a. Downloading or installing software of any kind

b. Spamming, spoofing, phishing, etc.

c. Writing unauthorized programs or scripts

d. Printing anything other than school work such as reports or homework

e. Using any technology, including that which is not owned by, licensed by or supported by

Albertus Magnus, on school premises or under the auspices of Albertus Magnus High

School for the purposes of any of the following:

i. Accessing, creating, editing, copying, or sharing in any way any material that is

inappropriate and/or unauthorized and/or non-educational including but not

limited to pornography, gambling, drug-abuse, violence, etc.

ii. Bullying, harassing, threatening, defaming, slandering or any similar activity.

iii. Cheating, plagiarizing, or affecting grades or academic outcomes, or similar

activity.

iv. Doing business – legal or illegal.

v. Shopping or purchasing any goods or services.

vi. Unauthorized recreation including gaming, watching videos and the like.

Computer Lab Use

The use of the school computer lab and other technology areas (e.g., Library) is restricted to

instructional, educational and research purposes only. The following rules apply at all times when

using these computing areas:

1. No food or drink of any kind is allowed at any time.

2. The computer lab is open for all students:

a. From 8:00 am to the beginning of first period.

b. During school periods when a class is not in session in the lab

c. From 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM (may stay open later if supervised by a faculty member)

Email Policy

Email is neither confidential nor private. Albertus Magnus High School reserves the right to examine

email at its discretion. Everyone is responsible for any Email sent from their account. Do NOT share

User IDs and passwords.

Only Albertus Magnus email is to be used on school premises or with school computers or school-

supported computers of any kind. The use of personal email is not allowed (e.g., gmail, yahoo,

verizon, optonline, etc.).

Internet Use

Browsing history is neither confidential nor private. Albertus Magnus High School reserves the right

to examine the Internet locations visited by anyone on school grounds or using school computers or

school-supported computers of any kind.

Use of the Internet is restricted to accessing research and other educational materials directly related

to the school curriculum or school sanctioned clubs and other organizations.

Terms and Conditions

These terms and conditions are governed by Albertus Magnus High School. The school

administration reserves the right to modify these terms and conditions at any time without prior

notification. These terms and conditions, along with the policies and procedures governing them,

apply to all members of the Albertus Magnus High School community.

Student Discipline

Probation

A student may be placed on probation by the Administration either for academic or disciplinary

reasons. The conditions of probation will be determined by the Administration. Those students who

fail two or more subjects for the first quarter will be placed on academic probation and progress will

be reviewed at the end of the second quarter. When a student is placed on probation, a conference

will be held with the student and parents, during which time the terms of the probation will be

discussed. The students and parents will then be asked to sign a letter indicating that they both

acknowledge the terms of the probation and recognize that a failure on the part of the student to

comply with these terms could result in his/her immediate dismissal from school.

Suspension

Whether it is an in-school or out-of-school suspension, it is an isolation of the student from the school

community. The duration of the suspension will be determined by the Administration, based on the

seriousness of the offense committed by the student. A conference with the student’s parents is

required before the student can be admitted to class.

Alcohol and Drugs

The use of alcohol and drugs is absolutely forbidden on the grounds of Albertus Magnus High School.

Any student found possessing; distributing or utilizing these substances anywhere on the premises

will be held responsible and will face repercussions and probable expulsion. After a parental

conference, the administration will determine the future status of said student. In the case of alcohol

these penalties can include suspension, community service, counseling or expulsion. In the case of

drugs, to include marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids, liquid marijuana and vaping devices and

controlled substance, Albertus Magnus has a zero drug policy that can result in expulsion. The above

regulations include all activities related to the student life of Albertus Magnus both on campus and off

campus.

Vandalism

Students are accountable for any damage to school property. Students will be required to pay for any

repair work that results from vandalism. In addition, the student is subject to appropriate disciplinary

action.

Attendance

Success in school begins with consistent attendance and punctual arrival in school and to class.

Students are expected to be in school and on time on all days when school is in session. Class days

are noted on the school calendar. Any student who is absent 9 or more days a semester or is late 9

or more times in one class is liable to failure in that semester. In certain cases, the principal will be

the final arbitrator.

There are state laws and regulations regarding attendance at school. These laws and regulations

give very little discretion to either parents or to schools regarding what constitutes legal absence from

school: sickness, death in the family, health treatment, and court appearances. State laws and

regulations distinguish between two types of illegal absence: unlawful detention and truancy. A

student whose parents expect them to be in school and who does not attend for reasons other than

the legal reasons

listed above is truant. Unlawful detention occurs when a student is absent with the knowledge and

consent, stated or implied, of their parent, for other than legal reasons. According to state

publications, such excuses as “visiting,” “vacation,” “away,” “needed at home,” “work,” “overslept,”

“missed the bus,” and so on, fall under the category of unlawful detention. Albertus Magnus is

mandated to record each absence in the category under which it falls, namely legal absence, unlawful

detention, or truancy. These records are part of the student’s permanent record.

In case of a student’s absence from school, parents must call the attendance office (623-8842, Ext.

218) by 10:00 a.m. and leave a message indicating the student’s name, homeroom, name of

individual calling, and reason for absence/lateness. Extended absence (3 or more days) must

indicate a request for homework assignments. Upon the student’s return to school, he/she must bring

with them an absence form which is given to the homeroom teacher. Any absence not accounted for

by an absence note will be considered an illegal absence.

In case of serious illness at school, a student may be dismissed only after the Health Office has

contacted a parent and adequate transportation has been arranged. Students must sign out in the

Attendance Office before leaving. A student going home before or during the first period of the day

will be considered absent for the day. Students who are absent during all or a major part of the day

are not permitted to participate in or attend after school sports program for that date.

Citizenship

It is each student’s responsibility to display qualities of good citizenship. Albertus Magnus teachers

give special emphasis to honesty, morality, and courtesy. Obedience to law, respect for our country’s

flag, appreciation of the Constitution of the United States, respect for parents and home, and

recognition of the dignity and necessity of honest labor are characteristics or attitudes desired and

expected of all our students.

Closed Campus

The campus is defined as all the grounds and buildings of Albertus Magnus High School. Once a

student enters the campus, he/she may not leave until dismissal. Students who leave the campus

without permission will be subject to suspension and/or detention.

Court Orders

Parental Rights to School Records – Albertus Magnus H.S. abides by the provisions of the applicable

law with respect to the rights of non-custodial parents. In the absence of a court order to the contrary

and upon request, the school will provide the non-custodial parent with essential academic records.

If there is a court order specifying the rights and responsibilities of individual parents, it is the

responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the school with an official copy of the court order. The

custodial parent may wish to supply the Principal with the “custody section” of the divorce decree if it

contains information, which may be useful to the school in fulfilling its obligations.

Lost Items

State books that are found should be turned in to Mr. McKenna. Other books and clothing found

should be turned in to the Main Office. Lost articles, which are not claimed within a reasonable time

period, will be given to a charitable organization for distribution to needy families. Students are

reminded to be proactive regarding the security of the valuables, such as money, jewelry, I-Pods, Cell

phones, etc.

Entrance and Exits

Students are to enter the school building in the morning by way of the entrance by the Cafeteria.

Students are not to use other entrances to enter the building. Students should be dropped off or

picked up in the main parking lot only. Parents should refrain from parking or standing in the fire

zones or spaces in the Germonds Road semi-circle.

Guidance Appointments

Students are welcome in the Guidance Office anytime during their Study Hall or Lunch Period. A

student visiting Guidance during a Study Hall should first notify the teacher responsible for that study

hall with a Guidance pass before excusing themselves from Study Hall. If a student must see a

counselor during a class period a student must first request a pass from his/her counselor or from the

Guidance Secretary, before first period or after school. The student must show the pass to the

teacher whose class he/she will be missing. A student should not absent oneself from a class in

which a test is being given to go to the Guidance Office. In the case of an emergency coming up

during the day, the student should secure permission from his/her teacher to see a guidance

counselor in the form of a written pass, and the counselor will verify in writing that the student did in

fact come to the Guidance Office. If a student fails to follow this procedure, the behavior will be

treated as per the rule for cutting. Parents are welcome to call the Guidance Office anytime to

schedule an appointment if they have any questions or concerns.

Homeroom

Each student is assigned a homeroom to which he/she will report at various times during the school

year. Students are seated in a manner that will facilitate the taking of attendance. Students are

expected to be attentive and serious during homeroom. School and class business will generally take

place during homeroom.

Identification Card

All students are required to carry their school-issued identification card. This card should be in the

possession of the Albertus Magnus student when required at school sponsored events.

Field Trips

On occasion, Albertus Magnus High School will sponsor and conduct field trips for the educational

enrichment of the students. Participation in field trips is a privilege. No student may participate in a

field trip unless a signed parent/guardian permission slip for the specific event is submitted to the

school. The permission slip is provided by the school.

Students are subject to all school policies described in this agenda with regards to disciplinary

matters and are expected to behave as an Albertus Magnus student during school field trips. Any

violations of the Albertus Magnus discipline code will be subject to the appropriate penalties.

Physical Education Classes

Every student at Albertus Magnus is required to take gym class unless he/she has a written parental

or medical excuse. Only those students with a written medical excuse will be excused from dressing

for gym class. All students with medical excuses are to stay with their gym class. A student who is

medically excused for a month or longer may be given permission to make alternate arrangements at

the discretion of the instructor. Students are required to wear the proper gym attire in the gym class

(Gym uniform - Albertus Magnus shirt, Albertus Magnus shorts/sweats, gym shoes). At the end of the

gym class period, all students are to be attired according to the daily dress code of the school before

leaving the gymnasium area.

Uniform Dress Code

The students at Albertus Magnus High School are expected to appear neat and well-groomed at all

times. It is expected that as students arrive for the beginning of the school day that they are dressed

in the required uniform including the uniform shoe. The judgment of the Administration is final in

matters of dress and appearance at school. Students who are not in conformity with the Code of

Dress and appearance will be subject to disciplinary action.

Both Boys & Girls

• Students must arrive at school in full spring uniform starting on the first day of school.

• We require students to wear only solid white leather sneakers with shorts or shoe styles sold

by our uniform company, Flynn and O’Hara. These shoes will be the only acceptable ones for

all students. We have recently added a solid brown leather Sperry shoe as an option for the

boys and girls.

• As we move into winter uniform in October, maroon sweaters will be required.

Boys:

• Boys must be clean-shaven (no facial hair) with neatly trimmed hair above the collar, eyes, and

ears. No Mohawks of any style, and no body piercings or tattoos are acceptable.

• Boys Khaki pants and/or shorts must be Flynn & O’Hara uniform pants. Other brands, such as

Dockers, MUST be the same style and color as the Albertus pants and/or shorts offered at

Flynn & O’Hara. No cargo style or jean-type pants or shorts will be permitted at any time.

• Summer - Beige Khaki Shorts, a white or maroon Albertus Magnus golf shirt, and clean solid,

white canvas/leather sneakers. Boys shorts are required to be a 10” inseam in length. Socks

are to be worn and should be solid white, crew or ankle. A maroon or white Albertus golf shirt

tucked in with belt on pants or shorts showing. Only a plain solid white tee shirt is permitted

under the Albertus golf shirt.

• Boys who opt not to wear spring shorts attire, are required to remain in a traditional spring

uniform - khaki dress slacks, golf shirts and uniform shoe or Sperry.

• Winter – Beige Khaki pants, solid white oxford shirt, school sweater, appropriate tie, and

school leather shoe or Sperry. The Sperry shoe MUST be the same style and color as the

Albertus shoe offered at Flynn & O’Hara.

Girls:

• Skirts must be no more than two inches above the knee at all times. We ask parents to pay

particular attention to this detail in order to avoid the added expense of having to re-alter or re-

order a skirt in September.

• Girls’ hair color must be that of a natural color. Naturally high-lighted hair is permitted; no

multiple colors such as pink, etc. are permitted. Girls may not wear excessive jewelry or make-

up. Any types of body piercing or tattoos are not acceptable.

• Summer - Summer cotton skirt (no winter skirts permitted), a white or maroon Albertus Magnus

golf shirt, knee socks (must be solid color gray, maroon, or white). No low socks are

permitted.

• As an option, girls may also wear khaki shorts, 8-9” inseam in length, solid white sneakers,

solid white crew or ankle socks, and a white or maroon Albertus Magnus golf shirt. Only plain

solid white tees or tanks are permitted under the Albertus Magnus golf shirt. No tops are

permitted to show below the school golf shirt.

• The solid brown leather Sperry shoe is an option to the girls uniform for both the summer and

winter requirements. The Sperry shoe MUST be the same style and color as the Albertus shoe

offered at Flynn & O’Hara.

• Winter – Winter skirt only, solid white oxford blouse with school sweater. No tight-fitted blouses

are permitted. Girls’ knee socks or tights must be solid color gray, maroon, or white. No low

socks are permitted.

Dress Down Days

Dress Down Days exclude the wearing of inappropriate attire (to be determined by the

Administration). Boys’ earrings and hats are also unacceptable.

Hats, headbands, hoods and any other head covering are not to be worn in the school building at any

time during the school day. Outer jackets are not to be worn in class. This apparel is to be in your

locker during the school day.

Discipline Policy Regarding Uniform Violations

Students who are found in violation of Albertus Magnus uniform policies will be subjected to a

discipline policy that will progress with the number of uniform violations. The progression will be as

follows:

1. Warning

2. 30-minute detention

3. Full detention

4. Parental conference

5. Loss of dress down day privileges

Students who are determined to have excessive uniform violations will not be permitted to dress

down with the remainder of the student body on days determined by the administration to be “dress

down” days.

It is the belief of Albertus Magnus H.S. that each student should be treated as a person who can

reasonably be expected to be responsible for his/her own behavior. The school administration will

assist each student in this program of personal responsibility with a few sensible rules of conduct,

focusing on safety and respect for the rights and property of others which will be consistently applied

in the classrooms and throughout the school. Students who cannot accept responsibility and violate

school rules will be required to accept the penalties and more regulated supervision.

Disciplinary infractions are categorized below into three levels. At each level a sample group of

behavior is listed along with a range of possible disciplinary sections. This list is not meant to be a

final listing and is subject to revision at any time.

School detention will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

A missed detention will result in an additional detention to be served.

Level One Offenses

Financial Policies (2017-2018)

Parents/Guardians and students attending Albertus Magnus High School have contracted for

educational services and agree to pay for these services. Albertus Magnus High School recognizes

that parents/guardians are the individuals legally responsible for all financial expenses incurred when

a student is enrolled in Albertus. Unfortunately, it is usually the student and his/her educational well-

being that are affected if these educational services are interrupted because of failure to keep these

financial agreements. The President of the school is the school administrator responsible for the

implementation of these policies and for representing any questions or exceptions to the policies of

the School Board.

Tuition Payment Timeline

All tuition payments are processed through the FACTS Tuition Company. By April 1, the tuition

payment preference form must be submitted indicating your choice of payment options: payment in

full by June 1, or a payment plan that will begin in June 2017.

If the tuition office does not receive a tuition payment preference form from you, you will be re-

enrolled in the same method of payment as the previous year.

By June 1, all payments in full are due if you wish to receive a $350.00 discount on the yearly tuition

Tuition Account Arrears

• The School Board of Albertus Magnus High School has directed that all students must pay at

least three (3) months of tuition in order to be admitted to school in September.

• The Tuition Office will contact accounts that are delinquent for one (1) month.

• The President will send a notice of the date for academic suspension. This would mean that

the student would not be admitted to any classes or any school activities, including

participation in interscholastic sports, during this period. These days would only be recorded

as school absences and not disciplinary suspension on any records.

• Students may be dismissed from Albertus Magnus High School if payment or a plan for

payment is not made within one week of the suspension of services.

• No transcripts or information regarding a student whose account is in arrears will be released

without explicit approval of the President.

• No tuition balances will be permitted after May 30th.

• Students will be refused admittance to quarterly or semester or final examinations if tuition is in

arrears.

• Seniors will not be able to participate in the graduation exercises if tuition is in arrears.

• There will be a $25.00 fee for any check returned from the bank in addition to the bank service

charge.
