We’re starting this month with

some congratulations. Every year since 2012, the Citizen of the Year award has gone to one, or more often two, well-known figures in the town. And each year, the award has been well-deserved. And that is particularly the case this time.

Carnival Week is one of the highlights of Chudleigh’s year and the procession on the Saturday evening brings hundreds of people out onto the street.

I suspect many of those people, sipping a drink while

Not everything is black or

white

After a quiet start to the year, we have had a very busy month as,

in April, we held our first two events of the year. 28 people turned up to help celebrate the 400th birthday of Shakespeare and read their favourite pieces. Everyone enjoyed it so much that it was decided we would try and run a similar style event (not Shakespeare though) in the Autumn.

Two days later, we held the latest in our “Meet The Author” evenings, when two young crime writers, Claire Do-noghue and Chris Ewan, held an “In Conversation” discussion about their writers' lives and their new books. This was very well received and we had many complimentary comments about both authors. I think we will now all be following their careers closely as I am sure they will be going on to great things in the world of crime writing.

Finally, we held our annual Coffee Morning in the Town Hall at the beginning of May. As usual our members were very generous in the offerings of cakes and raffle prizes to sell on the day and we raised over £200 to put to good use in the library.

admiring the floats or dropping some change into the collecting buckets, do not realise just how much effort goes into organising that event or indeed the whole week.

For the members of the Carnival Committee it is a year-round activity. And Alan and Annie are the lynch-pins that hold it all together. They don’t make a noise and a fuss about everything that needs to be done; they just get on and do it. Huge congratulations to the pair of them for a well-deserved recognition of their efforts.

And as many of you will know, Alan has some health

issues at the moment. We wish him well; we are thinking of both of them at this difficult time.

*** Over the next week, you will hopefully see even more children than usual walking through town on the way to, or from, school during Walk to School week [details page 6]. Anyone who lives anywhere near Lawn Drive will know of the issues caused by excessive, and sometimes downright dangerous, parking at the start and end of the school day.

This quote posted by one of the parents on Facebook recently says it all: “a fire engine that was obviously on the way to the serious accident on the A38 at Harcombe Cross had great difficulty making its way up Lawn Drive as it just had no way to get through because of all the idiots that double park just up from...the lay by, the cars driving up and down had nowhere to go to make room for

the fire engine to pass. “Was really bad

watching the fire engine struggle through. Let's hope people learn from this.”

*** And this month, as we rush towards summer (well hopefully) we see the start of the major outdoor events, with the Party in the Park. Organiser Mike Underwood has been hinting that HM is planning to put in an appearance herself. Now, I wouldn’t hold out much hope for that personally, but it’s going to be a great afternoon, with or without the guest of honour. And our own Carnival Royalty will be there. Enjoy!

*** And don’t forget that the Chudfest Box Office opens this month. There will be a special session for Beach Party tickets on Monday 30th May, but the main Box Office opens on Thursday 2nd June.

This year, the swimming pool is open 3 weeks early, so it gives more chance for people to swim!

It was a big hit on the first day; many people were there doing jump-ins, swimming, playing on the floats and mostly hav-ing great fun! On the side, adults were relaxing in the sun and enjoying chocolate bars from the shop. The life guards were also enjoying themselves as no one was drowning!

But if there aren’t enough visitors, it may have to shut down. Dun... Dun...Dun... So please visit the swimming pool as no one wants it to shut down.

We all know the classic book and films of Peter Pan, written by J M Barrie, but now it has been recreated in a high-flying adventure, Pan.

Peter, who was abandoned by his mum, is a cheeky 12 year old. He has spent nearly his whole life in a cruel London orphanage. But when the evil matron secretly sells him to pirates in the dead of night, Peter arrives at a fantastical world, of pirates, warriors and mythical creatures, called Neverland. He must uncover the secret of his mum and see where he stands in this new world. Peter teams up with Tiger Lily and a new friend, James Hook. Will they be able to defeat the ruthless pirate, Blackbeard.

As they say in the movie: ‘Friends become enemies and enemies become friends.’

Dr Todd Gray is one of our regular speakers as he is well

informed about Devonshire matters as well as being very entertaining. His talk on 15th April, entitled Remarkable Wom-en of Devon, was attended by 31 members and 7 guests, a good attendance as several of our regulars were away.

Our next talk, The National Coastal Watch, is on 20th May and will be given by Eddy Stevenson from the Teignmouth branch of The National Coast Watch Institution, a voluntary organisation set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along UK shores since the closure of many of our small Coastguard Stations.

Many of you will have wondered why the Chudleigh Mosaic

Following the rejection by the District Council of the plans to

develop 1, The Square, the owner has appealed to the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol. CADAS, together with the Chudleigh Protest group, has submitted further reasons why the application should be rejected. A decision is awaited.

A New Tree for Chudleigh

To mark the 90th Birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II, the

Chudleigh and District Amenity Society has planted a new tree in the churchyard in front of the main entrance and in a position where it can be seen equally from the main street.

Following advice from the TDC tree officer, a specimen Magnolia campbellii ‘Sidbury’ was purchased through Teign Valley Nurseries, Bridford who sourced it from a specialist in the Theme Valley of Worcestershire. It is a variety originating from Sidbury Manor in Devon and which should in time grow to 25ft. high .Once again the Town’s Environment Group, ably assisted by members of CADAS, stepped in to help with the planting which was carried out as soon as the tree arrived.

It was most appropriate that Christopher Pidsley, one of CADAS’s founder members in 1972 and a former Vicar of Chudleigh, should bless the tree on the occasion of his 80th Birthday Party in the Church on 8th May. Andrew Turnbull, current Chairman of CADAS hammered in the plaque to record the donation and thanks go to Skaigh Engineering of Oldway who designed and produced the plaque at short notice.

We were pleased to see no fewer than 22 people,

including a tiny baby, five children and two dogs, for our first public event on 23rd April.

On our walk to the River Teign and Puttshills Wood we saw a Goldcrest, Treecreepers and a Wren, and heard Nuthatch and Marsh Tit calling. The Primroses, Violets, Early Purple Orchids, Wood Anemones, Bluebells, Wild Garlic and Yellow Archangel were a picture. Fraser fished out a Bullhead and various mayfly larvae from the river while we watched solitary mining bees around their holes in the bank. We marvelled at the long tongue of a furry Bee-fly, which it probes into flow-ers whilst hovering. At the end we had a collection towards buying Swift nest boxes.

Don't forget to keep an eye open for nesting Swifts in the town and let us know ([email protected]) where you see them entering buildings. We have more Chudleigh WILD events planned for the coming months, including a picnic walk in August, bats in September, hedges in October and bird ringing in December. Details will be given in future issues of Chudleigh Phoenix.

Hedgehog Alert! Drive Carefully

Barbara Steele contacted CP to say hedgehogs are active in her garden,

and she has seen them crossing the roads at night on Lawn Drive, Millstream Meadow and Chestnut Crescent. They have also been sighted in Rock Road. It is good that these little creatures are in Chudleigh, and it is to be encouraged, but sad if they get run over.

Earlier this month there was a hedgehog awareness week, and tips about encouraging them can be found on this website: www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk.

Have YOU seen hedgehogs in your garden? Do get in touch and let us know.

Chudleigh Town Centre Improvement Project

Background

Trying to foresee the future is difficult, particularly in town

planning. There have been a number of development plans drawn up by Teignbridge District Council (TDC) some with extensive consultation with residents. The most recent in 2010/2011 led to the Chudleigh Masterplan, which is part of the TDC local plan. Particular themes expressed by the population included:

Improved facilities for young people. We can now see the results: an envied Skate Park, multi use games area (MUGA) and a youth centre in the old school.

Community and sports facilities. This is being addressed by the community interest group.(CCIC)

Town centre improvement, which we look at in this document. TCEAC is committee of CTC formed in 2014 as a result of the Masterplan. A detailed scoping document has been produced, but this summary is to try and outline the issues. Some concept designs have been done, but a feasibility study would be necessary to see what is possible.

KEY AIMS

Improve business/retail opportunities in the town centre.

Make the central retail and community facilities attractive to residents

Make the town centre attractive to tourists

Make it safe

Make it beautiful

Traffic flow and speed

Traffic signs should encourage traffic leaving the town centre to use the most efficient route.

Traffic slowing measures, e.g. chicanes and bumps, should be improved such that traffic in the town centre is at roughly 10mph.

Increase in parking spaces for delivery and shopping in the main street .

Pedestrians

Widening pavements and reducing trip hazards would prevent the need for baby buggies and motor scooters to go into the roadway.

Bus stops could be resited so that there are adequate bus shelters with seating.

Fingerposts would direct walkers to other features of the town.

Changing the road layout could make space for pleasant seating, trees and further planting.

General Appearance

Surface of road and pathways can be changed to emphasize different spaces.

It would be very good if cables could be buried.

Street lighting could be better designed.

The surroundings of the Obelisk and War memorial could be improved.

Challenges

Change is always difficult to cope with and there is a feeling that decisions are made without asking local residents. Consultation was very extensive in 2010/2011 including a town questionnaire and there was good response. There is no doubt that the town population will increase over the next 10-15 years and we need to make plans so that retail opportunities are improved and the essential character of Chudleigh is not lost. During building work the trading businesses must be protected. Town centre enhancement is already a feature of the TDC Local Plan. A feasibility study will look at ways to roll this out and make life better for vehicles, pedestrians, residents and visitors for the future.

Tessa Frost Chair of Environment Committee

Pupils from Chudleigh Primary School,

along with children and parents across the UK, will be taking part in Walk to School Week between Monday 16th and Friday 20th May. The idea is to increase children’s health and well-being due to the benefits of additional exercise, while helping the environment by reducing the number of car journeys.

In a rural area like ours, it is not always possible to walk to school, due to the distances involved. However, Chudleigh offers a Park and Stride

scheme where parents can leave their cars in the main car park and walk their children through town and across the Playpark to school. This short-term parking is free between 9am and 9.30am; and from 3.15pm to 4pm.

The issue of parking in Lawn Drive at the start and close of each school day is one of great concern to a number of parents. One parent told CP: “There are parents throughout the school who have no idea they can't come up the drive without permission; who don't

Walk to School Week and Parking Issues

know about the Park and Stride scheme; and who are genuinely ignorant of the parking problem. They therefore have the power to improve it by parking responsibly.”

Chudleigh Rotters Update

The work session on 5th May went very well with lots of

attendees which included two new members, and one of our attending member’s young daughter also lent a helping hand. She was very amazed to be shown our resident slow worms who were nesting under the carpet mound.

Twenty bags of compost were sieved and bagged up ready for sale and in fact twenty bags were sold on the morning!! All the bags of mulch from the Xmas trees have been sold already. The pile of mixed donations was added to the large bay together with some shredded paper and cuttings from the newly mowed grassed area; and, to help things along, water was also added. One of the middle bays was turned over to get the air into it and the spoil from the sieving was added to it. The weather held out for us and everyone had a very enjoyable and productive morning.

Our next work session is on Saturday 4th June from 10am to 12noon at our site in the Mount Pleasant composting site, and as usual hot and cold drinks and biscuits will be provided. New members are always welcome, so drop by during this time to see what we are doing!"

Mr Pesto Recommends with Michael McCormick

When new restaurants open or are under new

management, I always get a mixed feeling of excitement and trepidation. The excitement is the hope of something new; preferably something I’ve never had before. Trepidation because the restaurant is an unknown quantity and can be disappointing when it first opens.

This month I tried Ricca’s, 57 Queen Street, Newton Abbot. Now you may think that Queen Street doesn’t need yet another eatery, but a good Italian is always welcome. The décor is light and fresh and service was good. We went for lunch and started with olives and a Caprese salad (tomatoes, mozzarella and basil) followed by meatballs with pasta and penne with chicken. The food was OK but lacked the joy and pleasure of real Italian food. I know people who were looking forward to this being a “special treat” kind of place, but it’s not quite there yet.

The Highwayman’s Haunt, Exeter Road, Chudleigh, is now into its fourth incarnation since we arrived in Chudleigh. People tell us how pop-ular it used to be when the people running it had

identified their customer base and delivered what they wanted.

The new business owners, John Milan and Steve Bellman, should be able to make it a great place to visit again. They own a number of establishments in the West Country, including: The Mill on the Exe, Exeter; Pandora Inn, Falmouth; and The Waterfront, Plymouth.

The first time we went was just after they had taken over and everything was a little chaotic with repainting going on around us. The second time we visited for lunch and had a very good sausage and mash, washed down with a pint of Abbot Ale. Front of house is ably managed by staff formally of the Ring of Bells in North Bovey and the chef also came from there. It has all the makings of a pub that will get better and better as it homes in on what customers want. We look forward to eating there regularly.

Legs Scrambling Again! Lisa Lea-Weston brings us an update

This is the third year that a bunch of very

“normal” women have been training for the tough 6mile road race that is taking place this year on 15th July and begins outside the Bishop Lacy pub.

We are fundraising again for Cancer Lifeline South West, based here in Devon, who have supported many local people over the years in that frightening moment after treatment ends and there are no more hospitals. Not that we like hospitals particularly, but somehow you feel safe in treatment. Set free finally actually feels really frightening and often people around you are so happy you are well they want you to go back to how you were…

But there is no going back, only forward in a life forever altered by cancer and its treatment. This can be very exciting alongside an acute sense that life is precious.

This year it seems to be shifting into something else which I find really exciting… There are more Legs than there have ever been and many are no longer from my immediate circle of friends but women who have been inspired to run after friends who have become or were friends of

mine and Sarah’s have run it the last two years. A kind of wobbly Leg effect…there may well be over 20 of us running. How amazing is that?

Every Saturday at 4pm since Feb/March we have been meeting up and running/walking for an hour. It is still the case that many of the women running have never run or haven’t run since before they had children. It is a serious challenge to all of us. Andy Palmer and Alison German are the ones getting us from 0 fitness to 6miles of running uphill and down. Without their motivation and planned training we would get nowhere on our own…we would be too busy “yakking”.

There is a WhatsApp group set up this year where we arrange our mid week runs—you would not believe the amount of encouragement and support that exists—new friendships are being forged again. It is utterly wonderful to be part of it. Women’s partners are suddenly wondering where they are on a weekend—they are out running—and our children are seeing us differently. Many of us have personal men-tal and physical health challenges that we encounter through training and gradually

overcome. So, all of this

is what we gain for ourselves but when motivation dwindles, it really is massively remotivating to remember who we are doing it for. The last two years our funding has been some of the biggest Cancer Lifeline has received. It receives no central funding.

So please, help motivate us and sponsor us here on our central page (in Sa-rah’s name):

You can find out more about this amazing charity here. There are also Face Book pages for Scrambled Legs and Cancer Lifeline.

Thank you for your support. We will give you more info on the runners next month!

At present both documents are unaudited so could still be subject to change. They can be viewed on the Town Council website or hard copy can be obtained either by email or by visiting the Town Council office.

Chudleigh Town Council website

Chudleigh Town Council is supporting an

extravaganza in our community with a “Party in the Park” at the Kate Brook Sports Centre kindly hosted by Chudleigh Cricket Club.

The afternoon party, on Sunday 12th June, will start at 2pm and you are invited to bring your own refreshments and gazebos or sun shades and enjoy an al fresco picnic with friends and family in the sunshine. Alternatively there will be plenty of food choices available with teas and cakes, hot and cold savouries and of course candy floss! The bar will be open all afternoon until late and the CC will be holding a BBQ later in the afternoon.

Many of the Chudleigh organisations are taking part with exhibitions, sideshows and performances. These will include the Chudleigh Primary School Drummers and the Shanty Men, and watch out for the pantomime cow!

And appropriately, the Chudleigh Carnival Queen will be crowned during the afternoon

So if you enjoy a party; if you would like to share a picnic with family or friends; if you would like to try your hand at pétanque or soft ball cricket; maybe hunt for treasure with real metal detectors; enjoy a BBQ later in the afternoon; or just pop in for a beer, you will be most welcome. Bring your cameras!

Bioblitz 1st to 2nd July

Run by Chudleigh Town Council as part of the programme of initiatives to encourage the appreciation of wildlife, this will be a 24 hour celebration of all things wild and wonderful in the Chudleigh Parish. People will be asked to help the team of researchers record the species of plant life and animals around the town. This is an interactive event which promises to be informative, educational and will assist ecology research.

The Beach Party 2nd July

In a change from the headline Summer Ball, this year we are throwing a Beach Party in the marquee resplendent with a surf board simulator and cocktails at the bar to get you in the holiday mood. No stuffed donkeys in sight but don your flip flops to throw shapes to Exeter band Reckless who are sure to make it a memorable night. Box Office opens Monday 30th May.

Live at the Chudleigh Apollo 7th July

A new sort of Comedy Club with alternative comedians, com-pered by Jackie Juno who tells us: “We have such a varied lineup of performers, including an Independent Catholic Priest and stand-up comedian in the form of Maggy Whitehouse; Rob-ert Garnham, surreal performance poet and Professor of Whim-sy; brilliant young stand-up talent from Luke Honnoraty, a born natural to the stage; and .. er ... me.... woman of a certain age, firm believer in Death Before Diet, resident of Bovey Tracey and Grand Bard of Exeter.... Chudleigh has never seen such a cutting-edge diverse array of comedy talent!”

Hits from the Blitz 8th July

The sirens are wailing and the talented townsfolk of Chudleigh invite you to take refuge in the marquee with your hosts Gaina Seager and Paul Hurrell ( CADS Panto Dame!) for a night of toe tapping 40s and 50s entertainment.

You will be keeping good company with: The Shanty Men; Chudleigh duo ‘Sophisticats’; AJ’s Burlesque Dancers; Songs by Sunny Van der Pas; Girls Allowed Out plus Chudleigh Am-ateur Dramatic Society and 2Fired up. "This could be our finest hour!"

Vikings invade Chudleigh! 10th July

Vikings will be present at the Chudfest fete on July 10th. They will set up an encampment, and demonstrate metal working, including using a replica forge, and will re-enact an exciting Viking battle (but we have asked them to desist from excessive pillaging...)

And all the old favourites will be back, including the Quiz and the 60s/70s Disco. Posters for all events will be published in next month’s Chudleigh Phoenix.
