Dear reader,

AIESEC is an Organization existing since more than 60 years. How can a student driven organization live continuously for more than 60 years and grow relentlessly till becoming the largest in the world? This question has been always with me during my experience in the Association without leading me to a unique answer, but probably I found a solution to this question just at the end of my life in AIESEC, a surprising solution. Indeed, the biggest strength of this Organization seems to be exactly what at first sight externally seems its biggest weakness:every year an AIESEC experience ends to leave space to another one.Every year a young AIESECer from anywhere in the world finishes is mandate so that another member after him will continue what have been done.Every year this Organization renews itself. What is possible to do in one year, 12 months? Many things? Few things? Obviously 12 months seem to be enough to build up something that will be preserved in time and will become part, like the piece of an endless mosaic, of the history of AIESEC.

The AIESEC Italy 2008/2009 described in this Annual Report represents nothing else that one of these “pieces”, even if characterized by unique happenings, emotions and feelings. Who lived personally the AIESEC Italy 2008/2009 had the chance to be part of a special experience thanks to:

the Ambition, demonstrated throughout the projects at international level that made Italy a referring point within the global network of AIESEC; throughout the new strategies that led towards an improvement of the structure of the Association and especially of the culture of our members; throughout the numerous collaborations with relevant Organizations and the approach to prominent personalities of our country;

the Growth, realized within the 08/09 term, that marked memorable results in the main functional areas (international exchanges, members, leadership opportunities, external positioning, etc.);

the Criticality, of the term 2008/2009. A year which the main projects and dreams of AIESEC Italy have been realized and which the Global Financial Crisis got life.

But all this it’s just thanks to an entire generation of AIESECers that believed in the concept of the “Road not Taken”:

“…Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.”(Robert Frost)

A concept whereby if you really want to make the difference, you have to chose the road that the others didn’t take, the most impervious, because only in this way you can grow. AIESEC Italy 2008/2009 chose to grow and that’s why it faced many challenges that made its path very hard, but at the same time full of satisfactions.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PARTNERThrough the Talent Development Program Telecom Italia engaged a positive relationship with AIESEC in order to develop an international project for long-term research which involved 6 young AIESEC interns from Japan, Korea and Brazil. Thanks to its efficient network all over the world, AIESEC was able to provide Telecom Italia with young talents with academic backgrounds in ICT and Business analysis as well as a global international culture.AIESEC selected short-lists of profiles based on our organization needs and offered to our chosen candidates a complete logistical support, including VISA applying and accommodation. We confirm our positive collaboration with AIESEC recommending this international young organization for those companies who want to start or develop an international experience.

“I’ve been for 45 days in Addis Ababa for the project of expansion of AIESEC in Ethiopia. My mission was not merely to transfer knowledge but to make the AIESEC machine run in Addis. I was part of a multinational team which I worked and lived with everyday. Since the beginning we focused in creating a team and in building up a plan to run activities. I delivered trainings about soft and hard skills and in particular I transferred to the Ethiopian guys the AIESEC culture and how AIESEC runs its activities providing opportunities to young people. Thanks to the work of my team we created the right conditions to allow 4 Ethiopian students to live a working experience in Italy. From a professional point of view I think this experience enabled me to really put in practice all that I learned in and outside AIESEC, leading me to understand how many things I knew, and how they could be useful in such a different context. I developed my

communication and management skills and being in contact with a completely diverse culture and working style I also sensibly developed my determination to achieve objectives. From a personal point of view I can say that this experience was the best ever in my life, because of the people I met and the quality of relationship we built. I never did so many things in such a pleasant and funny environment. I can definitely say that participating to this project gave me such a different and positive perspective of the world that I’m a new person now. Thanks AIESEC in Italy for giving me and the Ethiopian students this opportunity.”

In the year of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, as a President of the Congress Committee I have had the honor to witness most incredible emotions shared by all the people I have worked with. Their dreams, their goals and all their energies have strongly connected through this one extraordinary Congress of AIESEC.The Global Leaders’ Summit 2009 has been guided by the spirit of those who believe in values such as Active Learning, Innovative Ideas and Diversity. And it is through Diversity and Innovation that we built the concept of the Congress.

Working in a Team of 25 people coming from 10 different countries has shown to be about true Learning and Approaching Diversity in its deepest perspectives. For the first time after a long time, AIESEC in Italy had the chance to host the most important AIESEC Annual Congress, gathering together more than 200 young students coming from 107 different countries. Rome has been the magnificent capital of the AIESEC world during the span of the Congress. The result was an incredible number of events within the Congress, a great number of stakeholders having benefited

from it, and an outstanding involvement of human and intellectual capital, mostly coming from pro-active students has been noted. They have made cultural understanding become the path to follow in their own lives.

This is what made Global Leaders’ Summit special. As young entrepreneurs, we managed to achieve great success, in one of the world’s worst financial crisis. We managed to get our partners and institutions to believe in the project, even if the external environment was heavily influenced by the crisis.Another OPPORTUNITY for students to learn and to grow was processed by AIESEC. This is what makes our contribution into a step forward towards a better place, which we want to live in.

Finally after a lot of energy spent during the past three years, AIESEC in Italy and the Congress Committee did have an impact on Italian society, leaving a footprint that will be a fundamental memory for the future of the Association of AIESEC in Italy.

In conclusion, I would like to express profound gratitude to AIESEC in Italy National

Committee, alumni, partner companies and organisations for the success obtained while we have committed ourselves to live this unforgettable life experience.

Yours sincerely,

Luigi Gallitto

Anna’s thoughts…

“In restless search for hints capable of inspiring my creativity. I constantly observe and try to comprehend everything that may be useful to me in order to create something communicatively appealing.

Being particularly fond of traveling and feeling strongly attracted by different cultures, my mind is restlessly seeking new shapes of communication. Thanks to my study career I've developed and improved through the years a well-founded competence and deep skill in graphic and design.”

Special recognition for the creative design to:

ANNA FEDERICA FERRARA Communications Designer

VialeCaterinadaForlì[email protected] www.annafedericaferrara.com

The underlying idea of the Slogan and Logo draws its inspiration from the world of music and of the orchestra, the 107 participating Countries are displayed as the members of an orchestra. This metaphor is directed to bring up and stress the union of several different instruments (i.e. Countries) that come together and create and produce something special and unique. The orchestra has its own director. AIESEC, in the present case (isolated blue-coloured spot, institutional colour), plays such role, becoming landmark and reference point for each Country, a subject that coordinates and “offers” to the public and to the Countries involved the chance to live an experience. The graphic shape that represents AIESEC is a “gear”, something mechanical, it’s the element able to activate the mixture among different cultures in an innovative way (the gear is in fact the innovation’s representation). Moreover, the shape of the logo evokes that of an arena, specifically, for the case at hand, the sketched plan-shape of Rome’s Colosseum, so as to underline under an iconographical profile also the location itself.

Rome,10September2009

First of all, I would like to express just how much your organisation has impressed me – both in terms of its history and its strength. You have come a long way and there is a lot to be proud of since 1949, when the number of exchange students was a mere 89. You have been widening the horizon of opportunities for students worldwide, and Italy is pleased to cooperate with you in promoting the principles that are the very basis of your organisation. Principles that are also our own.

As pioneers of the social responsibility of business and of responsible leadership, which you instil – of self confidence and cooperation, striving for excellence, integrity and decision making – all this is sustainability and humanity. Yours is a positive initiative because it is founded on values. The promotion of peace by developing human potential, in particular through youth, places the person at the centre of your activity. This is something we also promote in our young generations in Italy.

The values that AIESEC develop individually and in teams, go to the specific value of your association – awareness and the building of awareness through experience. Through an inter-cultural dialogue you are building culture, which in turn creates a sense of belonging to a community. The AIESEC is an excellent tool to put into practice a dialogue between students and business, students and industry, students and institutions so that the voice of youth the world wide can be heard and can affect the future.

I wish you all the best in your future activity, in the firm and hopeful support for the value-driven and committed future leaders your organisation is working to form.

Sincerely yours,Gianni LettaE

Before us lies a difficult challenge, but maybe for this reason all the more exciting. We mus put our talents to use to create our own, unique and rewarding experiences, and at the same time contribute towards pulling our times out of a recession that risks to move from an economic to a social level.

Our Ability to Innovate, exchange Ideas and products, by tying together diverse experiences and solutions will be a decisive factor in the creation of a future which is different from the one been predicted in these days.

We can count on new technologies, we can benefit from the energy released from our age circumstance - Youth, but to turn things around towards a favorable destiny we definitely need to leverage on generational solidarity.

That is why AIESEC’s role is important, because it offers itself as a tool for the achievement of international understanding and because it does so with intelligence and a spirit of friendship amongst students, that work to improve each other, with the final objective of making the world a better place.

Naturally I hope that we will be able to make use of truly representative associations, such as yours. On my behalf there is not just availability, but sincere gratitude if you would wish to share this project”

Being CEO of a company that deals everyday with international development of Italian firms, I am aware of the economical and financial difficulties that the world is nowadays facing, which have sensitively increased during last year. At the present, when crisis makes affairs hard to be managed, student education must be considered a key issue: tomorrow entrepreneurial class will have the opportunity to develop international and cooperation projects in order to create new stable sources of Innovation. The Energy and the Innovation spirit that AIESEC’s network aim at creating in our society, make this organization be one of the best patterns of young entrepreneurship and represents an unlimited number of inputs for professional and personal development. In Italy AIESEC is constantly showing its initiatives based on primary values such as people excellence and work, innovation, ethics and professional integrity. We confirm our support and commitment towards AIESEC, which is represented by a qualified group of young students encouraging relevant initiatives and looking for the best resources and talents in more than 1100 universities in the world.SIMEST has already had the privilege over the past year to cooperate with AIESEC in granting their initiatives the adequate support and we plan to assist them for the forthcoming years.

The associative year 2008/2009 has been successfully completed with a profit of 10.133,49 euro. This result is much more than satisfying knowing that it has been a challenging year considering both fix costs as well as unforeseeable ones. Analyzing the balance sheet the total revenues equal the amount of 109.797,40 euro. In comparison to last year the revenues are slightly lower, this is as well the case for the costs registered, which are inferior and add up to the amount of 99.664,00 euro. It is thanks to a very good cost cutting policy that made it possible to close the year with a considerable profit.

The revenues of this term are mainly generated by the new partnerships signed during the associative year as well as through the confirmation of some of the most important historical partnerships. By this we don’t mean to undervalue the revenues obtained thanks to our Exchange program. All this, considering as well the financial aspect, allowed the closing of the associative year having liquidity available that would ensure a good start for the following term. One of the costs that caused the decrease of the financial outcome of the year has been the contingency fund related to the removal of the credit towards the Ad Hoc Committee of Global Leaders’ Summit 2009, that has engaged in developing and organizing what has been for sure the biggest project of our term.

The most important costs are the ones related to the training of the associates, to be more precise the participation at congresses, the costs related to the accommodation and office of the National Committee and last, the ones related to the reimbursement of the full time members of the National Committee for their payments in advance. However an emphasis should be put on the fact that a good cost cutting policy has allowed a considerable decrease of the costs in comparison to the previous year.

Yours faithfully,

Samantha Stella

“ With this short communication that I want to share with all of you, I’s like to evidence the importance for AIESEC of having a Supervisory Board, a group of “externals” that cooperates with the top management of AIESEC Italy as consultants and supervisors. The Supervisory Board members are mainly entrepreneurs, managers and business men, who, with their experience and their position can give a wider view to those who are managing AIESEC at national level and are students with a little working field experience. The relation between University and Companies has been for many years a dream of the system and I have to say that AIESEC, even if in small extent, with this collaboration put an important milestones in this area. The values that AIESEC pursues, first of all the “social responsibility”, accompanied by the not less important ones of the business ethic and the quality in the human resources management, can be underlined in the cooperation between AIESEC and the Supervisory Board, just because the members of the Board are strongly involved in their professional life in these themes where the economic and business world are still absents.Obviously for the members of the Board and for the organizations involved in this collaboration the

Supervisory Board

advantage is that they can dispose of a relevant basin of potential young employees, already known and aligned to a new economic and social development vision. Then the existence of the Supervisory Board is welcomed and especially its strengthening in the future that will benefit the students that will be new business men and that will enter the field owning already an innovative vision.
