Message from the

President Dominic SungaLocal Committee President 2013

I had originally joined AIESEC because I thought I needed to supplement my university career with something substantial to help my career prospects after I graduated. At the time my brother was the President of AIESEC UBC, so it seemed logical to me that I should apply for the organization. I expected AIESEC to be a space where I could develop myself professionally, gain a valuable network and make a few good friends. I was pleased when I joined because reality met my expectations. The surprise, however, happened a few months after I became a member, when I realized that AIESEC was much more than what I expected.

Since I joined in September of 2011, my life has seen a series of changes that I know will form the foundation of my future, both professionally and personally. I have changed in ways I never thought I could, and all for the better. I came into AIESEC planning to leave once I got what I wanted. I even expressed to my brother that I would never apply to become part of the executive board. In the end, I stayed because AIESEC taught me to always dream bigger and better. I ran for president because AIESEC taught me that I should never sell myself short.

Thinking back on the days of when I first joined brings a smile to my face, because I was young (figuratively speaking), naïve, and clueless about how business works. It also fills me with pride to see how far I have come during my journey. I never thought that I would be writing these words as president, detailing what we have achieved this year as a local committee.

AIESEC UBC has had an incredible year. We’ve seen changes and improvements that I believe makes us one of the strong and established local committees in AIESEC Canada. This is because of the collective effort of not only AIESEC UBC’s Executive Board, but also of our dedicated members. We came together and created a culture that promoted excellence, leadership and passion.

In 2013 my experience as Local Committee President (LCP) has elevated my passion for AIESEC and what it stands for. Our exchange program is a bridge between youth leaders and the rest of the world. One of the greatest pleasures of being an LCP is seeing our members step out of their comfort zones, think out of the box, and develop a passion to make AIESEC better.

I can conclude with pride that AIESEC UBC is the highest performer in terms of outgoing exchange in the West, and one of the strongest in Canada. More of our members are developing themselves and are now stepping up to make bigger and better contributions to the entity.

Sincerely,

Dominic SungaLocal Committee President 2013

“It’s what life is. It’s a series of rooms and who we get stuck in those rooms adds up to what our lives are.”

As 2013 is coming to an end, it is fascinating to reflect how I met or was “stuck in a room” with amazing people since I joined AIESEC. Every second we shared, I learned from them. Their passion drove me to achieve my successes as Vice President of Alumni Relations (AR).

The AR portfolio is often described as the backbone of a local committee. It is responsible for connecting with alumni to strive for greater success. The ultimate goal of this connection is to impact youth through great quality international exchanges.

Besides the achievements that the team and I have accomplished, I am grateful to build a strong relationship with alumni, the Executive Board, and my portfolio team members including Christine, Jenna, Connie, Susanna, Jarrod, Winston, Bernie, and the incoming VP AR 2014, Mikhail Geyne.

I am confident AIESEC UBC’s AR portfolio will achieve even greater successes next year.

“The people who want to stay in your life will always find a way.” -Anonymous

It is strange how, despite not being someone who believes in the supernatural, I still believe there’s a mystical reason that our hindsight is 20/20, while our foresight isn’t. Perhaps memory is made to function that way and, in particular, the memories that originate in but will far outlive my 2013 term as VP Corporate Relations (CR).

CR in tandem with Incoming Exchange (ICX) are the portfolios responsible for engaging externals from a sales perspective and establishing AIESEC’s Global Internship Program within the Vancouver business community. This is accomplished by attending networking events, conducting sales meetings, receiving sales training and building long-term relationships with companies and externals.

The focus of CR this year was threefold:

1) find new strategies to engage externals and companies with our program

2) build solid CR member experiences

3) work with other portfolios to drive exchange

One particularly proud moment I had this year (twice in fact), though not explicitly related to CR results, was the opportunity to recruit and train the new members entering my team. Going through a VP experience allowed me the unique honour of creating experiences for others. They redefinined their comfort zones through their amazing efforts every week. Being VP also gave me friendship from our Executive Board and the membership of AIESEC UBC. I didn’t expect them to be so prominent in my life this year, but somehow, they found a way.

Attended 143 sales meetings

Record of booking 27 meetings in one week during March.

Raised an internship with eBrisk Video Inc.

Incoming Exchange (ICX) was a newly introduced portfolio at AIESEC UBC this year. The two main areas of our work in this portfolio included servicing our interns and international AIESECers, as well as assuming a supporting role for the Corporate Relations portfolio.

Aline Andrade from Brazil and David Rincon from Mexico are the two lovely interns that we had the pleasure of having at AIESEC UBC. Both interns have been in Vancouver for over a year and as they near the end of their internships, are getting ready to extend their work permits and call this beautiful city home for an additional few years.

Aline and David have demonstrated to our Local Committee the impact of AIESEC and the life changing experiences this organization offers. In addition to servicing our interns, we also had the opportunity to meet and welcome a number of international AIESECers from around the world. Whether they were current Vice Presidents of newly initiated Local Committees, Organizing Committee Presidents, or National Vice Presidents on the Member Committees, we were able to share knowledge and best case practices, build or networks, and represent AIESEC UBC and AIESEC Canada internationally.

As a portfolio that is closely related to Corporate Relations, Incoming Exchange was also involved in providing support to sell the Global Internship Program.

We provided Corporate Relations with supplementary tools in enhance selling the Global Internship Program. For example, knowledge on the Incoming Exchange process proceeding the closing of a deal and information about the Exchange Participant supply through compiling quarterly reports.

In addition to playing a supporting role for Corporate Relations, we also worked alongside Corporate Relations and contributed by book-ing sales meetings and managing accounts.

From experiencing the international aspect of AIESEC to performing sales activities in the local Vancouver business community, it has been a great year for Incoming Exchange and I cannot wait to see the new heights acombined portfolio with Corporate Relations will reach in 2014!

Finance

Looking back in the past year, I cannot help but feel extremely proud of what the Finance portfolio has achieved. It is a joint effort of every member in the portfolio and the whole Execu-tive Board team.

Finance is the portfolio in which members are given the opportunity to oversee the long-term financial health of the local committee through strategic decision-making based on cost-benefit analysis. Members also learn to use practical business software to monitor expenditures and budgets to prepare financial reports. Finance activity is closely related to activities across all other portfolios and plays an important supporting as well as a guiding role in the local committee.

The top three achievements of Finance for the past year align with what has been carved out in the year plan at the beginning of the year.

The first one is member engagement. Throughout the year, Finance members have actively participated in almost every event and attended at least one conference.

The second one is 100 percent member retention rate, which is one of the prominent results of well-improved member engagement.

The third is successfully applying to one of the major grants in Canada for non-profit organizations, which provided our LC a significant amount of funding for summer marketing activity.

It was a year full of challenges and fun. This year I finally put my passion for AIESEC into action by taking on a leadership role and going on exchange. It was a rewarding year.

The Marketing and Communications (MarCom) portfolio had a fulfilling year implementing digital marketing strategies, engaging media publications and creating events to facilitate exchange experiences. MarCom is the pillar to support the AIESEC exchange programs by engaging our stakeholders.

In 2013 we implemented marketing strategies and produced regular content for all our online platforms to document internship, membership, leadership, and alumni experiences. Every aspect was important in reflecting our local committee culture and capacity. Through media publications, such as on partner websites and newspapers, MarCom was able to share the value of AIESEC more broadly.

On the campus level, MarCom built a network at the university with various partners that enabled our success in recruiting exchange participants and members for leadership experiences.

Not only did MarCom engage externals for exchange experiences but we also engaged externals for education purposes. For example, we held an event called Exploring Diversity where the keynote speaker inspired the importance of intercultural integration, an aspect that AIESEC can take a role in.

Talent Management

The Talent Management (TM) portfolio is responsible for developing and implementing structures and programs within the Local Committee (LC) to further drive the growth of our exchange programs. In addition to that, the portfolio plays a key role in managing the experiences of the AIESEC UBC membership to ensure that they are receiving a quality membership experience.

This year, we have further developed our middle management structure within our LC by providing our Team Leaders with more proactive roles in leading their individual teams within their portfolios.

We have adopted Personal Development Talks (PDTs) into our LC. Through these PDTs we were better able to effectively grasp the quality of individual membership experiences, while obtaining feedback for the future development of the LC.

Since the implementation of AIESEC Canada’s new Member Education Cycle this Fall, our team has actively taken part in fully utilizing the tool, as well as integrating the national initiative and the Member Levels into our LC to promote cross-functional activity within our LC.

AIESEC UBC General Assembly Talent Management Team

Through events such as General Assemblies and Induction Days, we actively promoted international experiences over the course of the year. We are proud to present that there has been an increase in members that have proactively taken part in international experiences abroad this year.

AIESEC, at its core, provides life-changing leadership development opportunities through exchange. Youth are given the opportunity to either go abroad to work in a professional environment through the Global Internship Program (GIP) or volunteer to develop a community on an international level through the Global Community Development Program (GCDP).

The Outgoing Exchange (OGX) portfolio is one of the core portfolios at AIESEC UBC. Outgoing Exchange is in charge of recruiting, training, and providing service to our exchange participants, youth who are intending to go abroad through AIESEC’s Global Internship Program and Global Community Development Program.

The OGX portfolio culturally prepares our exchange participants, teaches our exchange participants about how to apply to internships through AIESEC’s global network, and trains our exchange participants on how to best market themselves to companies abroad.

This year, the OGX portfolio has reached incredible heights through the dedication and passion of its incredibly talented members. With the support of the entire Local Committee, OGX has been able to deliver even more life-changing opportunities to youth.

“AIESEC pushed me to be more social and independent over two internships, which was where I personally needed to grow the most. It helped me become more myself than I had ever been before and just [allowed me to explore] all the different possibilities in my life.”

Jessica Ngan,

You are one of the sweetest people I know. I absolutely love talking to you! Wish you the best of luck for your term as VPTM - you got this girl :)

xoxo

Just a special shout out to Christine, my long time friend from way back when we were just 12 years old. We had so much fun during her 1 year in cadets, but we lost contact afterwards. Years later on Imagine Day at UBC, it didn’t even take me more than a split second to recognize her bubbly character and friendly nature. So glad to see you again and thanks for luring me into AIESEC. I’m going to miss have you as my team leader, Christine!

Sandy Wan, OGX

To Amanda Hung

Thanks for being such an AWE-SOME VPTM! I’m kinda sad that I wasn’t able to be part of the portfolio earlier because you’re actually so awesome and a keener. I really appreciate all the knowledge you have imparted on me so far. You seriously talk so fast sometimes, I feel like a helpless sponge trying to absorb every-

thing, but it’s all good because I think I’m well informed about a lot of the initiatives because of that.

I’m sincerely gonna miss you! #TMlove

Christian Chan, TM

I wanted to give a huge shoutout to my MarCom team for all the hard work we put in this year to bring our portfolio to new heights! I could not have done it without each and every one of you and thank you for your contributions to MarCom and to AIESEC.

Also want to say thank you to the EB team. This has been a roller coaster of a year Adieu and see you again!
