2009 Kentucky Crops Look GoodAbundant rain during the growing season has helped crop prospects for 2009. Most crops have showed good development so far this summer accordingto the Kentucky Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. All forecasts in this release are based on conditions as of August 1 andassume normal growing conditions for the remainder of the crop season.

Corn production in Kentucky was forecast at 169.5 million bushels, 11 percent above the 2008 crop. Yield was estimated at 150 bushels per acre, upfrom last year's yield of 136 bushels. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 1.13 million acres, up 10,000 acres from 2008. The wet spring delayedcorn planting but the crop is maturing fairly well despite unusually cool and wet conditions. Expected yields showed wide variances within geographiclocalities. Condition of the corn crop statewide was mostly good to excellent. The U.S. corn production was forecast at 12.8 billion bushels, up 5 percentfrom last year but 2 percent lower than 2007. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields were expected to average 159.5 bushels per acre, up 5.6 bushelsfrom last year. If realized, this would be the second highest yield on record, behind 2004, and production would be the second largest, behind 2007.

Soybean production for Kentucky was forecast at 57.2 million bushels, an increase of 22 percent from the previous year. The increase was brought aboutby an improved yield per acre and larger harvested acreage. Yield was estimated at 40 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from the 2008 level. Acreage forharvest as beans was estimated at 1.43 million acres, up 50,000 acres from the previous year. Pod filling was behind last year and the five year averagedue to late planting this year. As of August 3, the soybean crop was in mostly good to excellent condition. U.S. soybean production was forecast at arecord high 3.20 billion bushels, up 8 percent from last year. Based on August 1 conditions, yields were expected to average 41.7 bushels per acre, up 2.1bushels from 2008. If realized, this would tie for the fourth highest yield on record.

Kentucky burley tobacco production was forecast at 157.0 million pounds, up 7 percent from the 2008 crop. The increase in production resulted fromincreased harvested acreage and higher expected yields. Yield was estimated at 2,150 pounds per acre, up 50 pounds from the 2008 crop. Harvestedacreage was estimated at 73,000 acres, up 3,000 acres from last year's crop. Development of the burley crop is somewhat ahead of last year and the 5year average. Disease pressure has been light, but several outbreaks of blue mold have been reported. Condition of the crop was mostly good to excel-lent. For the burley producing states production was forecast at 208.2 million pounds, 3 percent above last year. Burley growers plan to harvest 98,800acres, up 1 percent from 2008. If realized, this would be the second lowest burley tobacco acreage on record behind only last year. Yields were expectedto average 2,107 pounds per acre up 40 pounds from last year.

Production of Kentucky dark fire-cured tobacco was forecast at 31.6 million pounds, down 17 percent from the 2008 crop. Dark air-cured tobacco pro-duction was forecast at 14.5 million pounds, down 30 percent from last year. Tobacco companies have reduced the amount of dark tobacco on contractfor 2009.

Production of hay by Kentucky farmers was forecast to be up from 2008. There has been adequate rainfall for hay production this summer but wet con-ditions have caused some problems with drying and baling. Alfalfa hay production was forecast at 805,000 tons, an increase of 34 percent from the 2008crop. Other hay production was estimated at 5.28 million tons, up 16 percent from last year.

Wheat crop producing record-high yieldsFarmers planted fewer acres this year but harvested more bushels

A year with less winter wheat planted than other years will likelybe the year of record bushel yields.

As the vast majority of winter wheat has been brought in acrossthe state, the 52 average bushel yields per acre will likely surpassthe previous record of 48 bushel yields per acre set last year, thanks in large part to a spring and summer of good growing con-ditions.

“We’ve had rains. We’ve had cool weather,” said Randy Englund, executive director of the South Dakota Wheat Commission.“Wheat is a cool-weather grass and so it was good from thatstandpoint.”Though precipitation boosted yields, strong thunderstorms accom-panied by hail took their toil on winter and spring wheat in manyareas throughout the state.

Onida over to the Miller area got nailed a couple of times withstorms,” said Englund “Those were isolated areas but some werezeroed out.”

With spring wheat harvest going on, and winter wheat not yetcompleted, the National Agriculture Statistics Service has not yetcreated a county-by-county crop report for 2008, which wouldhave the numbers of acres of wheat planted and harvested in eachcounty in the state.

Severe storms in the area on June 2 and July 18, were particularlydevastating to spring wheat that was planted late.

But wheat outside of Hughes, Stanley and Sully counties also suf-fered from weather events, said Englund.

“We just had hail everywhere this year,” he said. “The Wall areacaught it and lost all their spring wheat just north of Wall. TheMiller area got hit twice.”

When wheat was not eliminated by hail, it was knocked down, complicating harvest.

There was fear earlier in the growing season that a cool, wet grow-ing season would increase the chances of crop diseases but pro-ducers were quick to apply fungicide to plants to take advantageof good crop prices. Winter wheat is selling for $7.50 to $8.50 abushel, depending on the quality, and spring wheat is trading forapproximately 50 cents more, according to Englund.

Last year, winter wheat sold for an average of $6.55 a bushel, according to the NASS.

“Wheat was handled by producers in a better manner than whatwe’ve seen in the past,” he said. “We completely dodged rust andscab this year.”

Like winter wheat, the harvest of spring wheat has been delayedthree to four weeks. Unlike winter wheat though, more spring wasplanted throughout the state, according to Steve Noyes, deputydirector of NASS’ South Dakota field office.

“We are estimating the state average yield to be about 43 bushelsan acre,” said Noyes.

NASS’ county report is due out later this year.

Last year there were 35,200 acres of spring wheat planted inStanley County and 35,100 acres harvested. Hughes County farm-ers planted a total of 28,500 acres of spring wheat and harvested28,400. In Sully County, 77,000 acres of spring wheat were plant-ed and 75,800 were harvested.

There were 105,000 acres of winter wheat planted in StanleyCounty last year and 89,800 harvested. Hughes County farmersplanted 83,000 acres and harvested 76,200 acres. In Sully County, there were 157,500 acres of winter wheat planted with 155,100acres harvested.
