Introduction to the Agricultural Industry (16001)Grade 9-10 1 Year 1 Credit

This orientation course provides an opportunity for students to learn how the agricultural industry is organized; its major components; the economic influence of agriculture at state, national and international levels; and the scope and types of job opportunities in the agricultural field. Basic concepts in animal science, plant science, soil science, horticulture, natural resources, agribusiness management, agricultural mechanics, agricultural biotechnology, food science technology, environmental science and aquacultural science and technology will be presented. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus. Participation in FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects is an integral course component for leadership development, career exploration and reinforcement of academic concepts.

Supervised Agricultural Experience I (16011)Grade 9-10 1 Year ½ Credit

This experience program is for students in 9th and 10th grades. Students receiving credit in this area must be enrolled in an agriculture class all year. Students will have a minimum of one approved project or acceptable plans for a project. Supervised study, project record book, training plans, training agreements, report writing, and instructor project visitation and supervision are essentials of this SAE. Course work and evaluation will be implemented in each agriculture course.

Agricultural Business Management I & II (10505 & 10506)Grade 11-12 1 Year 1 CreditPrerequisite: “C” or better in Introduction to the Agriculture Industry, Basic Horticulture Science, or Instructor Approval

This course will develop students' understanding of the agricultural industry relating to the United States and World marketplace. Instructional units include: marketing and trading of agricultural products, international agriculture, imports and exports, agricultural law, taxes, governmental regulations and policies, and advanced computerized record keeping. Student skills will be enhanced in math, reading comprehension, and writing through agribusiness applications. Employability skills will be developed with resume writing and interviewing techniques to gain employment. Post-secondary education will be explored at agricultural colleges and universities. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus. Participation in FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects is an integral course component for leadership development, career exploration and reinforcement of academic concepts.

Agricultural Mechanics & Technology I & II (16019 & 16021)Grade 11-12 1 Year 1 CreditPrerequisite: “C” or better in Introduction to the Agriculture Industry, Basic Horticulture Science, or Instructor Approval

This course will concentrate on expanding student’s knowledge and experiences with agricultural mechanics technologies utilized in the agricultural industry. Units of instruction included are: design, construction, fabrication, maintenance, welding, electricity/electronics, internal combustion engines, hydraulics, and employability skills. Careers of agricultural construction engineer, electrician, plumber, welder, equipment designer, parts manager, safety inspector, welder, and other related occupations will be examined. Improving workplace and computer skills will be a focus. Participation in FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects is an integral course component for leadership development, career exploration and reinforcement of academic concepts.

Supervised Agricultural Experience II (16012)Grade 11-12 1 Year ½ CreditPrerequisite: Supervised Agricultural Experience I or Instructor Approval

This experience program is for the 11th and 12th grade agriculture students. The opportunities and responsibilities are similar to those of SAE I with one exception that the experiences are conducted at a more advanced level of skill training. The projects should be expanded as the student progresses through the agricultural program. Course work and evaluation will be implemented in each agriculture course.

Biological Science Applications in Agriculture Plant Science (10507)Grade 11-12 1 Semester ½ CreditPrerequisite: “C” or better in Introduction to the Agriculture Industry, Basic Horticulture Science, or Instructor Approval

This course is designed to reinforce and extend students understanding of science by associating basic scientific principles and concepts with relevant applications in agriculture. Students will examine major phases of plant growth and management in agriculture and the specific biological science concepts that govern management decisions. Topics of study are in the areas of initiating plant growth – germination, plant sensory mechanisms, enzyme action, absorption, and managing plant growth – photosynthesis, respiration, translocation, metabolism, and growth regulation. The course will be valuable preparation for further education and will increase the relevance of science through the applied setting of agriculture by enhancing literacy in science and the scientific process. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus. This course is designed to reinforce and extend students understanding of science by associating scientific principles and concepts with relevant applications in agriculture. Students will examine major phases of animal agriculture and specific biological science concepts that govern management decisions in the animal industry. Topics of study are in the areas of growth and development of animals – embryology, ethology, nutrition, immunity systems, and processing animal products – preservation, fermentation, and pasteurization. This course focuses on the greenhouse management, floral design and related segments of the horticulture industry. Major units of study include floriculture plant identification, greenhouse structures, and the culture of greenhouse crops. Also included are care and handling of cut flowers, principles of art applied to floral design, and the mechanics of floral design. Agribusiness units will be introduced in merchandising, advertising, sales, and operating a retail floral business. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus. This advanced course focuses on the landscape, nursery, and turf segments of the horticulture industry. Also included are nursery production, turfgrass production, small engine repair, and maintenance of existing landscapes. Agribusiness units will cover calculating prices for work, managing a horticulture business, advertising, and sales. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus. ART Special Note – Art Kit

A set of art supplies is required for Art I, Art 2, and Art 3. The school sells an Art Kit at registration for your convenience. The kits are purchased in bulk and are much cheaper than buying the supplies at a local art store. For those who do not purchase an art kit, a list of supplies will be handed out the first week of class, and it will be the responsibility of the students to purchase needed supplies.

Art 1Grade 9-10-11-12 1 year 1 credit

Art 1 is an introductory level course that emphasizes art production. The course also introduces students to influential people in art history, methods of critiquing art, and to the different aesthetic theories in art. Art I will explore the forms of the visual arts, the visual vocabulary or art, and a variety of art media processes. The students art introduced to the methods and techniques associated with drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, graphic design, printmaking, and much more.

Art 2Grade 10-11-12 1 year 1 creditPrerequisite: Art 1 with a “C” average or better

A continuation of Art I, Art 2 expands into more advanced media methods and techniques. An emphasis will be placed on the exploration of art history. This includes exploring the cultural influences in art and the style of the artist.

Art 3Grade 11-12 1 year 1 creditPrerequisite: Art 2 with a “C” average or better

A continuation of Art 2, Art 3 is an advanced level course. The course will study Modern and Contemporary art and artists. Students will focus on issues of problem solving and design process in their artwork. A variety of art media will be explored.

Art 4Grade 12 1 year 1creditPrerequisite: Art 3 with a “C” average or better

Art 4 is an advanced level course. Students will work one-on-one with the instructor to develop their own body of artwork.

BUSINESS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Business Basics (30001)Grade 9-10 1 semester ½ credit

This course is designed to increase the student’s opportunities to succeed in work after graduation or continue their education at a community college or university. Students are introduced to the American economy and the role that business plays in the economic well-being of America. Topics included are business-government relations, forms of business ownership, finance, management, marketing and economic concepts.

Marketing ConceptsGrade 9-10 1 semester ½ credit

Marketing Concepts will be an introduction to the marketing world. It will include topics such as introduction to sales, promotions, distribution of goods, stock handling, pricing and product planning. It will be used as an extension to the Basic Business class. This class will give the student a well-rounded image of the business world facing them.

Basic Keyboarding & Formatting (30003)Grade 9-10 1 semester ½ creditThis class is for those who did not have Keyboarding in Junior High

This course is planned to introduce the basic skills in keyboarding techniques for typewriter style keyboards and ten-key numeric keypads including computers. Major emphasis in class is placed on keyboarding techniques, proofreading and correcting errors in documents that will be used in other classes and the future.

Introduction to Computers (30002)Grade 9-10 1 semester ½ creditPrerequisite: Jr. High Keyboarding and/or Basic Keyboarding

This course is designed to increase their opportunities to succeed in work after graduations or continue their education at a community college or university. Students will learn to use computers as tools in conjunction with related software and operating systems. Topics included are keyboarding/proofing, computer concepts/components, understanding Windows and the Web/Internet, and introduces the Microsoft Office 2000 programs.

Principles of Multimedia and Web DesignGrade 10 1 year 1 credit

This course focuses on the preparation and development of information to be displayed in a digital media. Topics covered by the course will include scanning images, digital photography, image editing, producing streaming media (web video), animated graphics, design fundaments, web page development and introduction to Java. This class is used to introduce students to Web Design and the Fundamentals of Java.

JAVA Programming (52125, 51526)Grade 11, 12 1 year 1 credit

Prerequisites: Computer experience and interest in Computer Programming. JAVA Programming is a course designed to introduce the student to JAVA software development. Students will write platform-independent object-oriented code for conventional, Internet-and Intranet-based applets and applications. Topics covered include graphical user interface (GUI) development; multimedia (images, animation, and audio); graphics strings, exception and security; application portability. A number of programming assignments will be given to enable the student to build real-world JAVA applications.

Students may take the course for high school and RVC (CIS 240) dual credit.

Programming Related to the Internet is a course designed for students interested in learning how to design and develop Web pages and Web sites. The course covers Web design, copyright, and marketing topics; as well as HTML programming, and HTML code generators. Additionally, students will learn about Web graphics and scripting languages used to create exciting Web pages.

Students may take the course for high school and RVC (WEB 101) dual credit.

Accounting 1 (20501)Grade 10-11-12 1 year 1 creditPrerequisite: Algebra I or consent of instructor

This is a skill level course valuable to all students pursuing business, marketing and management programs. This course provides planned learning experiences and activities to develop abilities necessary for keeping, summarizing, and analyzing financial records.

In addition to stressing fundamental concepts of terminology of accounting, instruction will provide initial understanding of the preparation of financial reports, operation of business machines, computer applications, development of proper work habits and employability skills, and exploration of the career opportunities

In addition, skills are developed in the entry, retrieval and statistical analysis of business data using computers for accounting business applications. This would start during the summer between the student’s junior and senior year and continue during the senior year. Work-based learning will allow the student to earn maximum RVC credit.

Certification – CISCO Networking Associate Certificate after last course.

Information Technology courses utilize the CISCO Networking Academy program, which is designed to teach students the skills needed to design, build and maintain small-to-medium-size networks. INDUSTRIAL ARTS

Introductory Industrial Arts for TomorrowGrade 9 1 year 1 credit

This course is designed to give a student an introductory knowledge of three areas of our Industrial Arts programs. This class is designed for the freshman lever to be a full year, to give each student a preliminary informational study of each area.

CAD (Computer Aided Drawing), the student learns the drafting program of AutoCAD 2002, or its upgrade version. Several areas of drawings including many toolbar functions will be covered to increase ones knowledge for the other areas of the drafting courses offered.

Technology of woodworking is covered over an 18-week period so that all areas of machine operation are covered. This gives the student a well-rounded knowledge of safety and machine operation. In the process of learning, the each student will complete three to four individual projects that enhance the learning process.

Electricity is the third area of study that will cover safety, the use of test equipment, basic theory of electricity, math that deals with electricity, and standard house/ schematic drawings. The student to make him/her comfortable when working around electricity performs several lab exercises.

Principles of Technology consists of 6 (semester) or 12 (year) two week courses including 4 stroke engines, computer animation, 3D modeling, bio-med internal organs, CAD, computer repair, graphic design, CNC milling, video editing, electronics, digital manufacturing, digital photography, and vinyl sign making. Symphonic and Concert Bands will perform together for marching and pep performance. Everything else will be separate. Symphonic Band

Grade 9-10-11-12 1 year 1 creditPrerequisite: audition

All Juniors and Seniors are automatically placed into Symphonic Band unless they choose to stay in concert band. Sophomores and Freshmen are eligible to audition for Symphonic Band. Auditions are held both semesters, and students can change from concert to symphonic band in the second semester if they pass the audition. Symphonic Band will be playing more advanced music on a higher grade level and will be expected to be proficient at a higher level on their instruments. They are also expected to practice their instrument outside of class. Students are encouraged to learn a second instrument and participate in the Concert Band if it fits in their schedule.

A wide variety of music is performed, from the classics to contemporary "pop" music. The band plays at all home regular season and playoff football games, a fall concert, a holiday concert, some girls and boy’s basketball games, a February concert combined with the junior high bands, organizational and small ensemble contest in April, a spring concert, Graduation, Baccalaureate and additional performances. From the large concert organization a jazz band and musical pit band are selected. Students are responsible for returning school owned instruments in original condition. Students must dry clean their uniform at the end of the marching season.

Driver Education is a course mandated by the State of Illinois for all residents who wish to acquire a Driver's License prior to the age of 18. Course work will include work on the physical, mental, and social aspects of driving as well as dealing with emergency situations, adverse driving conditions, economic factors in car ownership, and application of traffic law. All of the regional programs will prepare you for college or for corporate training after high school with a well-paying job and excellent advancement opportunities. The programs offer you college credit while still in high school, and the opportunity to enroll in Tech Prep. Tech Prep provides paid work-based learning with a sponsoring employer, while you are still in high school. You can receive specialized training, be paid for a job that utilizes the training, and earn college credit – all at the same time!

Enrollment in the eight regional programs is limted; therefore, it is important that you make your selection as soon as possible. All of the programs have admission requirements and some require a special application. Read the following regional programs’ information carefully.

Important note:

Stillman Valley High School incurs much added expense for these regional program classes. The nature of an off-campus class requires a high degree of self-discipline and self-motivation on the part of the student. For these reasons, all applications will be submitted to a review committee of SVHS faculty and administration who will evaluate each candidate’s past disciplinary and attendance record. Students who have not shown the ability to work responsibly and independently will be denied entry into these programs.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY

High school students, wishing to enroll in the CEANCI Two-Year Automotive Technology Program are required to submit a Program Application to the CEANCI Office. The student must submit their application to CEANCI by March 15, 2006. The program is open to juniors and seniors with priority given to juniors.

In the two-year high school Automotive Program, students are prepared for entry-level automotive employment as a General Service Technician. After graduating from high school, students may pursue post-secondary education, including Automotive Technology Programs.

**Articulated Credit: RVC has signed an articulation agreementto grant college credit for high school automotive courses. Students must follow RVC/high school articulation requirements.

3. **Brakes (#75006) is a one-semester course for high school seniors. To enroll, students must have completed 75003 & 75004. Students will identify and interpret brake system problems and determine necessary action. They will also diagnosis and repair problems on a variety of systems. RVC articulated credit may be received for ATM 114 Brakes.

4. **Automotive Electrical Fundamental (#75005) is a one-semester course for high school seniors. To enroll, students must have completed 75003 &75004. Students will identify and interpret electrical system problems and determine necessary action. Electrical testing equipment and special tools will be covered. RVC credit may be received for ATM 107 Auto Electrical Fundamentals.

Brakes is a one-semester course for seniors. Students will identify and interpret brake systems problems and determine necessary action. Diagnosis and repair of hydraulic systems, drum systems, disc brakes, wheel bearings, parking brakes, and power assist units will be covered. Antilock brakes and traction controls will also be covered. Students will work on a variety of systems and vehicles. Prerequisite: Introduction to Brakes/Chassis Systems. (CEANCI #75003) Students may receive credit for RVC ATM 114 Brakes.

NOTE: Automotive Technology regional courses are offered by Byron High School, Hononegah High School and Rock Valley College. The listed courses are offered by Byron and Hononegah high schools. Students can receive RVC Automotive articulated credit for the courses toward the Rock Valley College’s Automotive Technology Service AAS Degree program.

Students selecting to take regional automotive courses at Rock Valley College are required to take the RVC Reading Placement Test and receive a score of 70 or higher on the test. Read and follow the instructions/requirements on page 3 and 4. It is also important to know that you may take the RVC courses for high school and Rock Valley College credit. CISCO NETWORKING

High school students, wishing to enroll in the CEANCI Two-Year Cisco Networking Program are required to submit a Program Application to the CEANCI Office. Course Description:

Phlebotomy involves teaching techniques for the purpose of obtaining blood samples by venipuncture, micropuncture, and areterial puncture. Medical and laboratory terminology, anatomy of circulatory systems, interpersonal communication, laboratory safety, and laboratory clerical procedures are studied. Students may receive dual credit.

HLT 102 & 104 Medical Terminology I & II One Semester, Grade 12 Students: Seniors

Course Description:

(RVC Course, 1 credit for each course.)

Medical Terminology I & II are one-credit courses. In the first course emphasis is placed on building medical terms from word parts. Medical Terminology II is a continuation with emphasis on principal diseases affecting body systems, abbreviations, laboratory and diagnostic terms and medication. Students may take the course for HS/RVC dual credit.

Option I Course Offerings: Courses offered in the afternoon at RVC or at a local high school during the spring semester. Students are to work with the Health Occupations teacher/advisory to select appropriated courses.

BIO 100 Introduction to Human Biology is intended to equip liberal arts majors having limited or no science background with a knowledge of human biology. General principles of biology are integrated with the consideration of the human organism as an individual and as a member of society. Content will include biochemistry, human metabolism, a review of the systems, human genetics and human production. Students may take the course for dual credit. Credits: 3 semester hours

BIO 185 Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology undertakes a systems-approach, comprehensive study of the human body. Lab emphasizes the interrelationships between structure and function. The course is intended for student in pre-nursing, pre-respiratory therapy, pre-radiology, physical education of other fields requiring one semester of Anatomy and Physiology. Students may take the course for dual credit. Credits: 5 semester hours

ENG 101 Composition I teaches students to write effectively at the college level. Emphasizing writing as a process, this course requires students to write one or more essays of each type: exploratory, expository, and persuasive. Necessary attention is devoted to English grammar and usage. Students may take the course for dual credit. Credits: 3 semester hours

FWS 237 Nutrition for Optimum Living explores the function of nutrients and nutrition as it affects health. Attention is given to understanding the importance and inter-relationship of the nutrients to achieving optimal health. Students may receive dual credit. Credits: 3 semester hours

PSY 170 General Psychology is an introduction to the entire area of psychology through a presentation of historical and current theory and research. Topics include learning, motivation, perception, emotion, personality, and adjustment. Students may take the course for dual credit. Credits: 3 semester hours

Introduction to JAVA Programming is a course designed to introduce the student to JAVA software development. Students will write platform-independent object-oriented code for conventional, Internet- and Intranet-based applets and applications. Topics covered include graphical user interface (GUI) development; multimedia (images, animation, and audio); graphics strings, exception and security; application portability. A number of programming assignments will be given to enable the student to build real-world JAVA applications. Students may take the course for high school/CEANCI and RVC dual credit.

PRE-ENGINEERING

High school students, wishing to enroll in the Pre-Engineering Program are required to submit a Program Application to the CEANCI Office. The student must submit their application to CEANCI by March 15, 2006.

The Pre-Engineering curriculum is a four-year sequence of courses which, when combined with traditional mathematics and science courses, introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering prior to entering college. Students not intending to pursue further formal education will benefit from the knowledge and logical thought processes from taking one or more of the Pre-Engineering courses and the real life applications of math, science, and technology.

Principles of Engineering One-Year Course Students: Fresh., Soph., Juniors, and Seniors

Course Description: Principles of Engineering is a broad based course designed to help students understand the field of engineering and engineering technology and its career possibilities. Students participate in the design, development, construction, and testing of several projects. The projects are designed to develop the student’s skills in planning and design and problem solving. Projects include a marble sorter, ballistics launcher, simple machine, bridge, and materials testing. Student’s learning is enhanced through the use of programming, modeling, static engineering, and materials testing software. Math and science concepts and methods are introduced and reinforced. Students will also do research projects using the internet and other sources. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are introduced in order for the student to complete assignments and present his/her work.

Prerequisites: Interest in Engineering.

Introduction to Engineering Design One-Year Course Students: Fresh., Soph., Juniors, and Seniors

Course Description: Introduction to Engineering Design is a course that teaches problem solving skills using a design development process. Students use computer software to produce, analyze, and evaluate models of project solutions. They study the design concepts of form and function, then use state of-the-art technology to translate conceptual design into reproducible products. Students will be engaged in team work and apply adaptive design concepts in developing sketches, featured parts & assemblies, and map property calculations will be used to evaluate parametric models. Additionally, portfolio will be demonstrated and understanding of cost analysis, quality control, marketing, and staffing.

Prerequisites: Interest in Engineering. Recommend Principals of Engineering as the first course in the Pre-engineering sequence.

Digital Electronics (DE) One-Year Course Students: Sophomore, Juniors, and Seniors

Course Description: Digital Electronics introduces students to applied digital logic, a key element of careers in engineering and engineering technology. This course explores the smart circuits found in watches, calculators, video games and computers. Students use industry standard computer software in testing and analyzing digital circuitry. They design circuits to solve problems, export their designs to a printer circuit auto routing program that generates printed circuit boards and use appropriate components to build their designs. Students use mathematics and science in solving world engineering problems. This course covers several topics including: analog and digital fundamentals, number systems and binary addition, logic gates and functions, Boolean algebra and circuit design, decoders, multiplexers and de-multiplexers.

WEB DESIGN

High school students, wishing to enroll in the CEANCI Web Page Interactive Media Development course are required to submit a Program Application to the CEANCI Office. The student must submit their application to CEANCI by March 15, 2006.

In the one-semester high school Programming Related to the Internet course, students will learn how to design and develop Web pages and Web sites. After graduating from high school, students may pursue post-secondary education, including web information technology.

WEB 101 Programming Related to the Internet One Semester, Grade 12 Students: Seniors

Course Description:

The course is designed for students and professionals interested in learning how to design and develop Web pages and Web sites. The course covers Web design, copyright, and marketing topics; as well as HTML programming, and HTML code generators. Additionally students will learn about Web graphics and scripting languages used to create exciting Web pages. Students can take the course for high school/CEANCI and RVC dual credit.

Prerequisite: Computer experience and interest in Web Design.

**Articulated Credit: RVC has signed an articulation agreement to grant college credit for high school Web Page Interactive Media Development. Students must follow RVC/high school articulation requirements.

Regional Courses - 55

**Web Page Interactive Media Development (#30011) is a one-semester course for high school seniors. Students can take the course during the first or second semester of their senior year in high school. They can receive dual Rock Valley College credit for WEB 101, Programming Related to the Internet.

Admission Requirements:

1 Select Program – After studying the program offerings, select one of the six technical programs.

2 Contact your high school counselor who will provide specific program information – application form, curriculum and credit information, admission requirements, high school policies for attendance and transportation.

3 Complete program application – pay special attention to the application due date. Programs have different due dates and late applications will not be accepted.

4 Submit your completed application to your high school counselor. The counselor will attach the required school information and forward to the Tech Prep Office for processing.

Orientation to Academic SuccessGrade 9-10-11-12 1 semester ½ credit (up to 2 credits total)Prerequisite: Course failure or teacher recommendation

This class is available to those students who have failed classes and are behind in graduation requirements. It is also available to incoming freshmen who had difficulty in junior high school. OAS will focus on the following: Learning styles, organizational skills, test preparation, assessing academic progress, time management, goal setting, self-confidence, note-taking, career education and group skills.

Teacher AidGrade 11-12 1 semester ¼ creditPrerequisite: Teacher request and a “B” cumulative GPA

At teacher request, a student may be given the opportunity to serve as an assigned teacher aid during a class period for which they have no other assigned classes. Duties could include helping with individual instruction during in-class work time, helping the teacher with lab setup or doing typing, duplicating or other clerical tasks. The teacher will evaluate the performance of the teacher aid and determine the amount of credit to be awarded. The maximum amount will be ¼ credit per semester. Grading will be on a pass/fail basis. In order to participate or remain in the program, the student must have at least a “B” grade point average.

This course is for the student who is undecided about a career choice. Personal counseling and an interest test help determine several appropriate careers for the student to explore. Students attend school for part of the day and part of the day shadow in an occupation at an approved training site. Students are given the opportunity to experience firsthand what someone in their chosen field experiences on a daily basis. The purpose is to allow students to find out if the chosen career is one they would like to pursue. If possible, students are allowed hands-on experience. This is an unpaid shadowing opportunity. The course may be repeated during the junior and/or senior year. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation and insurance.

Work Experience Training – DO Classroom (90003)Grade 12 1 year Variable credit*This course is offered at Byron High School on space available basis

This senior only course involves two separate, yet integrated pieces. Students in Work Experience Training get the benefits of paid work training on-the-job, while participating in the DO Classroom with students in numerous other occupational areas. Students are released from school to be employed in a part-time job. In the classroom, they reinforce their on-the-job skills. Some areas that are discussed in the classroom are: finding job openings, applying and interviewing for employment, safety on the job, getting along with other employees, getting along with the employer and the public, work-related situations, exploring careers, and making career decisions. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation and insurance.
