6-9am Dawn’s rosy light is filtering through your

curtains, the lush foliage is a-chatter

with birdsong and it’s the perfect time to

embark on a morning game drive. Your expert guide and

tracker greets you with a steaming cup of coffee or tea

and briefs you on the myriad of wildlife you can expect

to view. Grab your camera and binoculars, board your

all-wheel-drive safari vehicle, and begin your search

for the notorious Big Five — that is, the elephant, lion,

rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard once so-prized by the

early big game hunters — and a menagerie of other

fascinating game and birds. Soon, you are capturing

photos of a lifetime: lumbering hippos as they waddle into

their favorite watering holes for the day, graceful gazelle

and impalas grazing in the golden grasses, or, if you’re

lucky, a lioness and her cubs sated after the night’s hunt.

9am With all the excitement of spotting wildlife

and the wondrous anticipation of never

knowing what you’ll experience next, you’re

sure to have an appetite. Return to the cool canopy of

your lodge for a hearty breakfast of fresh-squeezed orange

juice, eggs prepared just as you like, and perhaps some

piping hot berry scones or melt-in-your-mouth pastries.

Your guide just may surprise you with an alfresco breakfast

overlooking a popular waterhole where you can quietly

observe the pecking order of animals awaiting their

chance to drink.

10am Relax and do as you please. Your personal

butler and safari lodge staff are always at

your service, anticipating and taking care

of your every possible need. Explore the lush landscaped

grounds of your luxurious lodge, take a refreshing dip in

the mesmerizing infinity pool, or, simply lounge with a

book, absorbing the multitude of sounds and scents of the

bush. Perhaps join a local expert for a special talk about

the local culture or take a guided bush walk to get an

up-close look at the smaller wildlife and plants. You may

learn all about the ancient secrets of tracking, how to tell

the difference between a leopard and a cheetah, or the

uncanny ways that a family of elephants’ behavior closely

mirrors that of humans.

Noon Join your safari companions under a cool

palm-thatched canopy for a sumptuous

lunch of local specialties and international

favorites. Your imaginative world-class chef pairs organic

local produce with gourmet recipes, drawing upon European,

Asian and African cuisine.

2Pm As the animals retreat to the shade, spend a

leisurely afternoon pampering yourself with

a rejuvenating spa treatment, or opt for a

variety of explorations. Experience the real Africa with a

visit to a children’s school and the local village. Encounter

the proud Maasai warrior, dressed in his traditional

red robe with spear and shield, striding confidently

among the wildlife. Spend the afternoon at the wildlife

conservation center learning about the wildlife breeding

and rescue programs that not only protect endangered

species but support the community’s tourism jobs.

4Pm As the strong sun diminishes, the wildlife

awaken from their lazy naps — it’s time to

join your ranger for a late afternoon game

drive to catch the animals in action. Seek out the stately

eland, Africa’s largest antelope, as it forages among the

grasses, video the young elephant calves tucked among

their aunties’ legs, and search the shadows with your

tracker as he determines the most likely hiding spot for

the leopard to awaken from its afternoon siesta.

Listen to the elephants’ trumpeting echoes across

the savannah as you linger at a panoramic viewpoint

sipping sundowners — the safari tradition of serving

wine or cocktails as the sun sets. Upon your drive back

to camp, observe in wonder as your ranger spotlights the

nocturnal civets and prehistoric-looking anteaters just

beginning to stir.

7Pm In the lantern-lit dining room of your lodge,

savor a delicious dinner of Pan-African

cuisine and culinary creations to tempt every

palate. Raise your glass of South Africa’s finest wine and

toast your day’s adventures.

9Pm Gather around the campfire and wrap

up your evening stargazing. Behold the

Southern Cross and Milky Way illuminating

the velvety sky. Sink into your luxurious pillows and cool

sheets for a good night’s rest. With the day’s unforgettable

memories, your dreams are sure to be sweet.

BotswanaWith conservation-oriented controlled development and a small population, Botwana’s stable government has ensured a small tourism footprint and a most profound safari experience. For a safari destination like no other, Botswana’s gem is the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta. Explore the waterways with your expert rangers via slow motorboats or being poled in a traditional mokoro (canoe) spotting hippos, crocodiles and a myriad of birds. Fly from camp to camp to take in the delta’s diverse eco systems — wet and marshy delta that then empties into a desert full of wildlife. North of the delta is Chobe National Park and the Chobe River, one of Africa’s most sought-after safari destinations, where the elephant reigns supreme.

MadagascarGiant baobabs, white sand beaches and lush rain forests; thousands of species of orchids and fragrant trees of vanilla and cinnamon; a menagerie of lemurs, geckos and chameleons among an assortment of hundreds of animals found no other place on earth… You’ll marvel at the endemic wonders of “the eighth continent of Madagascar,” earth’s undeniably one-of-a-kind vacation and safari destination.

MozambiqueMozambique, whose coastline extends from South Africa to Tanzania, is known for its pristine, less-traveled beach

destinations along the Indian Ocean. Accessible mainly by flying, there are several small beach resorts offering fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving, and small safari camps with simple accommodations.

NamibiaWith the giant sand dunes in Sossusvlei, the expansive Namib desert, and the stark Skeleton Coast named for its countless shipwrecks, you might think you’ve landed in no man’s land when you touch down in Namibia. While sparsely populated, here you’ll find the ancient bushman, portrayed in The Gods Must Be Crazy, continuing their humble modern coexistence along with the solitary oryx and giant elephants of Etosha National Park. Namibia promises an out-of-this-world safari adventure.

South AfricaWhether you’re seeking a Big Five safari experience, cosmopolitan cities, a rainbow nation of richly diverse cultures or “the cradle of mankind,” South Africa is like a world in one country — the ideal destination for those seeking variety in their journey to Africa.

Delve into a melting pot of differing cultures and traditions when you touch down in South Africa’s vibrant cities and provinces. Explore beautiful Cape Town, the “Mother City,” with its iconic Table Mountain, picturesque winelands and “Fairest Cape” peninsula. In Johannesburg, the “City of Gold,” follow in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela and learn about

the country’s complex colonial history and banned apartheid policies. From colorful Durban on the Indian Ocean, ascend the continent’s highest pass to meet the Sotho People in the Kingdom of Lesotho, or visit the province of the Zulu Nation and its Mkuze and Hluhluwe game reserves.

With an abundance of activities and full range of lodging styles from five-star and boutique hotels to luxury tented camps, South Africa is an excellent choice for independent, self-drive or family travel. Wildlife enthusiasts will be pampered in world-class safari lodges and camps in Kruger National Park area. Join expert game trackers for magical game drives and bush walks, seeking out the Big Five and the wealth of unique and endangered wildlife indigenous to each reserve.

ZambiaBeyond Victoria Falls and Livingstone, Zambia’s interior parks will delight those seeking a more off-the-beaten path safari experience. Explore three diverse ecosystems, each with its own distinctive wildlife and exclusive safari camps: the lush rivers and flood plains of Kafue; arid Luangwa where Africa’s first walking safaris were pioneered; and the Lower Zambezi National Park, a massive wildlife sanctuary opposite Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools Reserve.

Zimbabwe After experiencing awesome Victoria Falls and its plentiful adventure activities, visitors to Zimbabwe have a wealth of safari

opportunities. Take a short flight to diverse Hwange National Park, and discover its great herds of elephant and large population of endangered African wild dog. Or visit Mana Pools, the country’s second World Heritage Site, to walk and canoe in a game-rich region filled with elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile. Head southeast to the secluded Malilangwe Reserve, a breeding sanctuary for the sable antelope and black rhino, and explore more than 100 of the ancient Bushman’s rock art sites.

In the KNOWVictoria Falls, called Mosi-oa-Tunya or “the smoke that thunders” by the indigenous people, is recognized as the largest curtain of falling water in the world. Named for Queen Victoria by Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is situated on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia, stretching about 5,600 feet wide at full flood. Accessible to South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, safari travelers can easily access the falls by staying in either Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe or Livingstone, Zambia.

In the KNOWDID YOU KNOW an elephant usually drinks over 52 gallons of water each day? They use their trunks as portable showers… with variable pressure settings. An elephant is typically right or left-tusked. The dominant tusk, called the master tusk, is more worn-down, and is often shorter with a rounder tip. The tusks are actually modified incisor teeth which continue to grow throughout an elephant’s life.

DAY 2 Cape Town Beyond the take-your-breath-away seascapes, look out for zebras, eland, ostriches and penguins on today’s exploration of the “Fairest Cape” peninsula. “Awesome!” you’ll proclaim when you view the beaches of Camps Bay, Clifton and Llandudno as you travel with your private driver to lively Hout Bay. Here, in the heart of the local crayfish industry, take an optional

You’ll find out all about the world’s fastest land animal, plus get some close-up portrait shots, when you visit the Cheetah Outreach on your way to the winelands. After a little history about the early South African settlers at the Taal Monument, you’re off to a wine cellar tour to learn all about winemaking. Do some exploring, strolling and shopping at the French-settled town of

Franschhoek as well as at the lively university town of Stellenbosch. (B)

DAY 5 Oudtshoorn / Plettenberg Bay On this morning’s visit to an ostrich farm, you’ll have to crane your neck to peer into the eyes of the world’s tallest birds. Check out their gigantic nests and eggs and the plucking pens where their feathers are harvested and dyed to be sold for fashion and crafts. Then venture deep into the Cango Caves to examine their glistening stalactites and stalagmites. Emerge into the sunshine and travel on past the unspoiled golden beaches,

lagoons and estuaries along the Garden Route to the village of Plettenberg Bay. (B)

OurAfrica

This was our first trip to Africa and it

was spectacular! What an adrenaline rush to look straight into the eyes of a lion five feet away. Our private guide in Cape Town was the best way to learn about “insider information” and the scenic wine country gave us a completely different experience. Our only regret is not staying longer. We were already planning our next trip before we even headed home!

One of countless magical moments on safari

DAY 6 Plettenberg Bay Gather your camera gear for today’s close encounters with monkeys, birds and elephants. Start with a private tour of Monkeyland, a fenced forest sanctuary where 12 species of previously caged primates from across the world roam freely. Then, explore the neighboring Birds of Eden where miniature species of monkeys along with 180 different bird species from around the world share a

sanctuary. Continue on to Knysna Elephant Park for a “trunk in hand” experience with the pachyderms, meaning you can shake hands with their trunks, as well as pet and feed them. (B)

DAY 7 Plettenberg Bay Thar she blows! All aboard for an ecological boat trip looking out for Bryde’s, Southern Right and Humpback whales or leaping pods of Bottlenose and the shy Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins.

The rest of your afternoon is up to you — laze around the pool, take a walk and just do as you please. (B)

DAY 8 Plettenberg Bay / Eastern Cape Game Reserve Just when you thought your adventure couldn’t get more exciting, the safari highlight of your family holiday begins. Venture deep into the bush for a three-night stay in a malaria-free private game reserve. Meet your expert ranger and set out for an afternoon game drive in an open-sided safari vehicle. Keep your eyes peeled for the Big Five — elephant, lion, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard, that is — and a multitude of other wildlife. After a hearty dinner, meet up with your new safari friends and share stories

and photos as you spot the many constellations illuminating the infinite Africa sky. (BLD)

DAY 9 Eastern Cape Game Reserve Wake up early with the chattering birds and grab your camera for this morning’s game drive. Your ranger will help you spot all kinds of wildlife from baboons and bush pigs to giraffes, honey badger and zebras. This afternoon, look out for hippos submerging along the riverbanks and watch for the African Fish Eagle searching for its dinner. Before tucking in for the night, listen carefully to see how many different animal sounds you can identify. (BLD)

In the KNOWDID YOU KNOW elephants have a “temporal gland” which lies between the eye and the ear? It “weeps” in response to a variety of situations, such as excitement, mating behavior and even during family reunions. Some elephants rub the resulting discharge on tree trunks, possibly to leave behind a chemically-scented message to other elephants.

35VISIT www.AfricanTravelInc.com

DAY 10 Eastern Cape Game Reserve Continue to build your wildlife photo gallery on today’s game drives. As twilight sets in, you may get lucky enough to witness a lioness hunting for dinner for her pride; or watch quietly as a family of hippo plods from the river for a night of grazing. As the nocturnal wildlife begins to emerge, return to the lodge for a sumptuous dinner. (BLD)

DAY 11 Eastern Cape Game Reserve / Depart Take in one last morning game drive before traveling to Port Elizabeth for your flight to Johannesburg where you’ll be assisted with your onward arrangements. (B)

EgyptEvolving since its first democratic elections, Egypt’s tourism is expected to rebound while its allure as the ancient “cradle of civilization” remains inextinguishable. Just a sampling of the unmatched treasures designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites includes: Historic Cairo, The Great Pyramid of Cheops, the sole survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; Luxor, the ancient capital of Thebes and its Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens; Abu Simbel, the High Dam at Aswan and the rebuilt temple of Philae. Your expert Egyptologists provide unending enlightenment on your private tours. Stay in five-star Cairo and Luxor hotels and cruise in four- and five-star elegance to view the intriguing sites along the Nile.

EthiopiaFollow in the three million-year-old footsteps of Lucy and man’s earliest ancestors when you explore ancient Ethiopia. Delve into the great civilizations of the ancient Abyssinia Axumite kingdom dating back over three thousand years and marvel at medieval Lalibela’s Orthodox churches hewn out of massive monolithic rock. Discover the country’s natural beauty and wildlife, from its Afro-Alpine highlands and the Great Rift Valley to lush jungle and savannahs teeming with game.

JordanThe gem of Jordan is Petra, the ancient Nabataean caravan city and UNESCO World Heritage Site which celebrated the 200th anniversary of its European discovery in 2012. Carved into the rose-colored rock faces, the world-famous archeological site was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia.

KenyaWith its celebrity first ensconced with Teddy Roosevelt’s “African Game Trails,” Kenya has long been the top destination for safari seekers. Showcasing a wealth of wildlife and iconic lodging, its ecologically diverse game parks include the arid Samburu and Shaba Reserves, and the lush Masai Mara, encompassing the northern Serengeti plains where nearly two million wildebeest and herbivores make their way during the annual Great Migration. While guests can check off the Big Five

throughout their exploration, each park has its own distinct wildlife and prolific birding.

Those looking for a more exclusive safari experience can indulge in staying at luxurious en suite tented camps and lodges within the private concessions. Beyond your expertly-guided game drives and bush walks, immerse yourself in the local culture — join a local family for dinner or take a bushwalk with the stately Maasai warriors. Wrap up your journey with a visit to Mombasa’s beaches.

RwandaWildlife enthusiasts and conservationists are steadily increasing their treks to witness Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas. Rebuilding its tourism since its mass genocide in 1994, Rwanda and conservationists remind visitors that the best way to help save the gorillas is to come see them. Expert guides and conservationists lead you on treks through the rain forest to observe the uncannily human-acting animals in Parc National des Volcans. Spot some 13 other species of primates in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

SeychellesWith its Coco-de-Mer palms, white sand beaches and world’s oldest tortoises, Seychelles is the epitome of the romantic and exclusive island getaway. An archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, its three main islands are Mahé, Praslin and La Digue — but our favorite escapes are Saint Anne and Desroches.

TanzaniaTanzania’s attractions are superlative — Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest free-standing caldera teeming with one of Africa’s densest concentrations of wildlife; Olduvai Gorge, renowned for the Leakey family’s profound discoveries of early man; and the Great Migration across the Serengeti plains, just to name a few. Building up its safari infrastructure some 50 years after Kenya, Tanzania delivers a less-traveled experience within its prolific game parks. For those seeking a true wilderness experience, travel south to the immense and untouched Selous and Ruaha game preserves or visit Mahale Mountains National Park at Lake Tanganyika, home to the world’s largest population of chimpanzees. Easily combinable with Kenya, a Tanzania safari can wrap up with a beach getaway to the spice island of Zanzibar.

UgandaOnce hailed by Winston Churchill as the “Pearl of Africa” for its prolific wildlife and lush beauty, Uganda has been steadily attracting travelers to view its shy mountain gorillas as an alternative to Rwanda since the early 2000’s. Trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to observe the gorillas, which are carefully habituated to humans — the gorillas are even known to come into your camp. Uganda’s other pearls include the centrally located Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls and Kibale Forest National Park, where you’ll find the most primates ever recorded in an African forest.

DAY 1 Arrive Nairobi, Kenya Jambo na Karibu! Welcome to Nairobi, or the “place of cool waters” in the Maasai language. Starting with this friendly greeting at the airport, you’ll be driven to your ideally located elegant inn neighboring Nairobi National Park. Spend the rest of your day at leisure. (D)

DAY 2 Nairobi /Amboseli Your safari takes off with a flight to Amboseli National Park, at the foot of magnificent snowcapped Mt. Kilimanjaro. Upon checking into your luxurious tented camp just outside the park, drink in the views of the mighty peak revered by Hemingway. This afternoon, join your expert ranger for a game drive in an open safari vehicle and look out for some of the biggest

elephants in Africa. Keep your camera on hand to capture the herds of zebra, wildebeest and prolific birdlife. Wind down your first magical day on safari, sipping a sundowner overlooking the endless savannah. (BLD)

DAY 3 Amboseli Awaken with the sounds of birdsong for an early morning game drive, an ideal time for photographing Mt. Kilimanjaro and the shimmering mirages around the dry lake beds. Bird watchers will delight as they count off the many species of heron or spot the uncommon Pygmy Falcon among some 300 varieties of birds. Later, join an expert Maasai guide for a walk outside the park and learn more about the ancient culture of his proud people. Tonight, select your dinner from an eclectic menu prepared by your chef and watch the wildlife traipse past the nearby waterhole as the stars come out. (BLD)

DAY 4 Amboseli / Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Fly off to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on Mt. Kenya’s slopes, for a contrasting safari experience. Meet your expert ranger for a game drive and start exploring the conservancy’s diverse ecosystems. You’ll be delighted by the varied wildlife that can be spotted here — 70 different mammals and some 350 species of birds. Be sure to watch for the endangered (but plentiful here!) Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe. Raise your glass to the views of Mt. Kenya as you dine. (BLD)

DAY 5 Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Spend the day viewing wildlife on game drives or insightful walks through the grasslands. You’ll learn more about The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a former cattle ranch that was converted to the first not-for-profit conservation

program in East Africa, including a rhino sanctuary where you can find over 50 black and nearly 50 white rhinos. Unwind poolside in the shade of the gardens, and after a fine dinner, watch the equatorial constellations reveal themselves before you tuck in for the night. (BLD)

DAY 6 Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Sync up with the rhythms of the wilderness and observe the wildlife at a leisurely pace. Take a closer look at the smaller animals and insects on a nature walk. Duck into a hide beside a well-frequented water hole and watch the wildlife drink in designated pecking order. DAY 7 Lewa Wildlife Conservancy / Masai Mara Set off for the magical Masai Mara, flightseeing past Mt. Kenya, the Laikipia Escarpment and the Great Rift Valley. After a warm welcome at your seasonal tented camp, embark on a game drive with your professional ranger. With the greatest and most diverse concentration of wildlife remaining in Africa today, the park is the ancestral home to the Maasai people and to small clans of Ndorobo, the traditional hunter-gatherers of East Africa. Gather for a communal dinner with your fellow adventurers and share your day’s adventures around the inviting campfire. (BLD)

DAY 8 Masai Mara Each day in the Mara will be dramatically different as you take game drives and bush walks with your expert rangers. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, large numbers of elephant and plains game, countless birds and smaller animals frequent the Mara’s tree flecked grasslands. Dense populations of hippo and crocodile gather along the Mara River. Return to your camp for sumptuous meals prepared from the freshest ingredients and the chance to share the day’s adventures. (BLD)

A family outing

The safari with AFRICAN TRAVEL

was truly an amazing experience. I can barely put into words the joy, laughter, and visually profound moments I had with my sisters. Perhaps the most fascinating moments were watching the rescue of a rhino and being allowed to touch him as well as seeing a group of rescued baby elephants playing in a watering hole just inches in front of us.

African Travel’s Safari Specialists can facilitate those who want to donate their time, expertise or physical labor to a variety of projects in East and Southern Africa. You can spend a day reading and making crafts with disadvantaged school children, assist at a medical clinic or help with repairs and painting at a local community center. Just one day volunteering truly makes a difference and is sure to touch your heart.

For details, check out our Added Adventures: “Volunteer Southern Africa” on page 53 for opportunities in Cape Town and Livingstone and “Volunteer East Africa” on page 79 for Arusha and Nairobi.

The Amy BiehlFoundationCrucial to its ongoing investment in Africa’s future is the company’s support for The Amy Biehl Foundation, operating programs to empower

youth living in the challenged and vulnerable communities within Cape Town since 1997.

Started in memory of young Stanford University student, Amy Biehl, who was killed in an act of political mob violence in 1993, the Amy Biehl Foundation contributes to community building programs and projects to alleviate hiv/aids, poverty, gangs, violence and crime. Now reaching 2,300 children weekly, the foundation teaches literacy, sports, the arts, peer education and essential life skills, helping keep youth off the streets and away from negative influences.

The TreadRight Foundation Sustaining the destinations we visit is of great importance to us at African Travel. We are part of a joint initiative by The Travel Corporation (TTC) family of brands called TreadRight; a not-

for-profit organization working to ensure that the environment and communities we explore remain vibrant for future generations. TreadRight is The Travel Corporation’s hub for all corporate social responsibility efforts, and manages a long-standing grants program that benefits sustainable tourism projects. To date, TreadRight has donated more than $2 million to projects worldwide, and encourages industry best practice through their support for the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Tourism for Tomorrow.
