Carbon in transition
The pace of renewables integration into Africa’s electricity supply industry and global climate changeconcerns are driving a reevaluation of Africa’s future energy mix and plans to supply power plants, industrial and other users over the coming decade (and beyond). However, there is a real need in Africa forgas to play a continued significant role as the ‘transition fuel’. The opening session will thus set out the casefor gas in AIX’s distinctively analytical but straight speaking manner.
Africa gas by numbers
Starting with new trends analysis from AfricanEnergy Live Data on the changing energy mix andinput from industry experts on the emerging shapeof global industries (including LNG export prospects,FLNG, gas-to-power (GTP) schemes etc. This willopen a debate on how changing trends in policy-making and investment are impacting and willimpact on gas producers.

Africa gas by policy
Government and regulator’s perspectives onindustrialisation programmes, gas masterplans andlocal content strategies. What do administrationswant from gas schemes? What are the challengesand expectations of working with the private sector? In the carbon transition are they at risk of findingthemselves with stranded assets?

Liquid fuel applications: still room to fit LPG andHFO in the new energy landscape?
13h45 to 15h15
Gas-to-power investment strategies
Focus on different elements of the GTP valuechain: IPPs and embedded GTP. Potentialsynergies for upstream operators, powerdevelopers and finance.
Can power developers be expected to co-investin floating regasification and other non-traditionalsupply solutions. Are current corporate structures(‘upstream operator’, ‘power developer’ etc)appropriate for the coming market? What roles doliquid fuels have to play?

Strategies along the gas value chain
Upstream operators, investors and powerdevelopers discuss challenges and opportunitiesalong the gas value chain. Everyone is excited bygiant fields in Egypt and Mozambique but what arethe prospects for wider upstream exploration anddevelopment.
• Limits to financing: how financing thermal projects is becoming more difficult. Views from banks and DFIs.
• Domestic supply obligations: do they signal the way ahead?
• Smaller deposits and associated gas — challenges of commercialising assets for producers and investors.
• Local content: driver of job creation or hindrancefor developers?
• Stranded assets: are upstream fields going to become uneconomic; is gas and other thermal infrastructure going to become a liability?
• Impact of energy transition: what should be factored in when developing future strategy and projects.
