Africa Unite School Clubs Red Carpet Awards 2016 Red Carpet Awards Ceremony: Africa Unite held its first red carpet awards on the 2nd of December at 6 Spin Street Cape Town, the purpose of these awards was to honor and acknowledge the achievements accomplished by learners in different School clubs. The aim of the school club is to give learners the opportunity to become agents of change within their schools and communities. The AU School Clubs have 3 main themes - School, Environment and Community. They consider the school and its surroundings as a country. Each country/ club is led by a president and 5 ministers that make up the cabinet together with 50 parliamenta- rians. The awards attracted over 100 people. School Clubs presentations

WIFI in Bloekombos Township.

All School Clubs presented their activities undertaken during 2016. Each presentation was followed by a word of support from a school representative or community member who witnessed the work of the school clubs in their respective schools and communities.Some of the highlights of the activities undertaken by different school clubs in 2016 were:

At school Level: • Elections of the school cabinet members and parliamentarians • School clean up campaigns • Fundraising activities : Talent Shows, Cake sales, Car wash, Fashion Shows, etc. • School dialogues on different topics: bullying, peer pressure and inter- high school fights • Launch of the school club in different schools during school assembly

At community Level: • Old age home reach out • Cleaning community parks • Soup kitchen for the homeless and needy families • Networking with local community leaders such as South African Police Service (SAPS), local councilors, Department of Social Development etc.

School Cabinet Awards

Simunye High received the Best School Club Award – The school received a trophy and certificates. The club has been working extensively in reducing gangsterism, bullying and peer pressure among the learners through various school dialogues. They have also worked closely with the Delft Police, local Spar, City of Cape Town Water and Sanitation Department, Department of Sports and Recreation and various community leaders. The award was handed over to them by Mr Nduzu Director of the Western Cape Department of Education.

Masibambane High received the Most Improved Cabinet Award– The school walked away with a trophy and certificates . Although the club was established later this year, they have undertaken many activities such as environmental campaigns, school garden, talent show and sporting activities. The award was handed over to them by Zoliswa LonjaDirectorate: at the Institutional, Management & Governance Planning Western Cape Department of Education.

Spes Bona High received the Best Fundraising School Award – They received a cheque of R500 due to their clean financial audit of the money which was raised during their various fundraising activities. Their incomes and expenditures were well recorded. The award was handed over to them by Africa Unite chairperson, Mr Vincent Williams.

Zonnebloem N.E.S.T Senior received Most Diverse School Club – They a received a certificate due to their gender balanced and cultural diverse cabinet. The award was handed over to them by Faith Manchidi Africa Unite Peer Educator.

Some of the highlights of the day

Mr Ndzuzu Director of the Western Cape Department of Education handing over an award (trophy and certificates) to Simunye High School. During his speech, he mentioned that he was very impressed with the level of leadership shown by each cabinet member in implementing various activities. He concluded that his department will extend an invitation to the AU School Clubs to take part during their Annual School

Summit in June 2017.

Noluvo Plaatjee of Independent Electoral Commission IEC also proposed that next year 2017 an extra award for the Best Democratic school club will

be added in which IEC is willing to sponsor.

Mr Onyi, Teacher at Masibambane Secondary School received the Most supportive Patron Award.

Mr Naidoo, Principal at Masibambane Secondary School received the Most supportive Principal Award.

Mr Vincent Williams Africa Unite chairperson closed the ceremony by thanking all the guests (school principals, teachers, leaners and parents of the leaners.). He mentioned that everyone present witnessed the achievements and impact of the work done by the school clubs at school and community

level. He also congratulated Africa Unite staff, peer educators and interns for the successful

organisation of the event.
