The angling event for the 2015 NSW Police Games was proudly hosted by the NSW Fishing Club Inc., In keeping with the move of the Games from Blacktown to Wollongong the event was again held on the waters of the Shoalhaven and Crookhaven Rivers and to sea. Greenwell Point was the base for the event and again proved to be a prime location. The competition ran over 48 hours from 12md on Sunday 15th to 12md on Tuesday 17th March 2015. Competition catered for anglers fishing Deep Sea, Estuary and Land based (Rock & Beach). 50 anglers registered for this year’s event, who fished alongside 2 of our Junior Anglers. The junior anglers performed well, with one dominating one of the angling species recording an all time club and Games record just to show the old salts they are not to be ignored when it comes to competition. Young Scott Chapman eclipsed the field when he caught and released a 93cm flathead. Flathead of that size are a very rare catch with very few anglers ever going close. The same goes for our lady anglers who once again left many of their male rivals in their wake. The weather and tides played a major factor in this year’s event with all anglers who fished in the previous two years angling event at this location finding the fishery different this year. The fish were not where they previously were making anglers having to work to find the fish. Sunday afternoon was a blow out with a stiff southerly blowing, resulting in only a hand full of diehards hitting the water. Mondays’ conditions were much improved which proved ideal for anglers. Tuesday saw a light northerly which made the fish a little harder to tempt. The majority of anglers caught fish, many reported that the fishing was better than in 2014. The top three places for both the offshore and inshore divisions were hotly contested with only 1 fish separating each of the top three place getters. A catch and release format was utilised with the majority of fish caught returned to the water. The results were as follows: Most Successful Offshore Daniel Lundberg (NSW Police) with 472 points Runner Up Offshore Max Brown (Staff BCF) with 447 points Third Place Offshore Murray Lundberg (NSW Police) with 409 points Most Successful Inshore Murray Chapman (NSW Police) with 879 points Runner Up Inshore Bernie Austin (NSW Police) with 839 points Third Place Inshore Zoran Taseski (NSW Police) with 817 points JUNIORS: Gold - Scott Chapman (NSW Police - family) 712 points Silver -Helal Butterfield (NSW Police - family) 155 points Bronze - Not contested LADIES: Gold - Cass Boyce (Loc. Teams Event:

This year the team’s perpetual trophy was hotly contested with the trophy being secured by the Local Government Rangers with a score of 384 points. The RSPCA coming second with 281 points, followed by NSW Police on 227 points. The staff from BCF McGrath Hill ran in a close fourth on 224 points. Corrective Services were relegated to fifth with 169 points, followed by NSW Police Public Service in sixth place on 124 points. One of the ladies from NSW Health registered to fish making the seventh team but unfortunately was unable to fish. The NSW Police Fishing Club is pleased to welcome the new competitors that attended the event for the first time this year. All advised they thoroughly enjoyed the event and will be back in future years.

A special thank you goes to the management and staff of the McGrath Hills BCF Store, who attended this year’s event and provided a variety of fishing and camping goods which were raffled off to competitors at the event, this support made the event more interesting for the competitors and gave the NSW

Police Fishing Club a boost. Also the NSW Police Council of Sport Inc. and the NSW Police Games Inc. for their financial and moral support attending the presentation to present the medals to successful competitors. All in all the 2015 angling event was a great success and those attending are now eagerly awaiting the announcement of the dates for the next Police Games event.

The 2015 NSW Police Games Clay Target Shooing Events were held at the Shoalhaven Clay target Club 15th of March. The shoot was open to all Police & Services both serving and retired as well as family and friends

42 Shooters registered for the events which was the highest registration for some years with shooters travelling from as far as Newcastle, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Ballarat to mix it up with the locals.

On Saturday afternoon 14th March the Shoalhaven Clay Target Club had a 50 targets Field and Game shoot. The Field and Game was not part of the official competition however allowed shooters an opportunity to arrive early, set up camp at the club and get to know each other whilst having a shot.

Shooters arrived on Sunday to overcast grey skies and gusty wind conditions which is probably the worst combination for clay target shooting. The day commenced with the 25 target Skeet event with the gusting conditions making for some very difficult targets. Congratulations to Steve Atkins form Shoalhaven Clay target Club who manage to shoot 25/25 in the Skeet Event, a great effort in the conditions.

The double barrel trap event was held on the second layout whilst the skeet event was being shot. During the event the wind continued to increase and the rain began. No shooter managed the prefect 25/25 for the double barrel event, however a few were only 1 target down. Good shooting in the prevailing conditions.

With the wind gusting 20-30 knots it was with some trepidation shooters again took to the lanes for the single barrel and point score events. Scores were lower given the single shot and point score events, however Peter Kenyon managed 23/25 single barrel in very trying conditions

Cycling event – Wollongong

On a fresh Sunday Morning riders gathered at Don’s Farm, Dapto. Ahead of them was a hilly 22 kilometre course and 2 difficult laps due to wind and other weather factors.

The 30 riders left as one large group and about half way through the first lap two riders Lean and Bell attacked and broke away from the group. A move considering the conditions was very brave and somewhat ambitious. In the chase group were many established road racers.

As they headed out on their 2nd lap the weather closed in. The wind increased and the clouds closed in over the mountains. Just minutes before the riders were due to return the heaven’s opened up and drenched the roads not ideal for the sprint finish.

Shortly after Lean rounded the corner and headed for home as a solo rider with Bell less than a minute behind. Certainly not what we were expecting, considering the quality in the chase group. A fantastic effort considering how early both riders went off the front of the bunch. About a minute later a good sized bunch came sprinting across the line for a close finish.

Our ladies did very well also battling away amongst themselves to also set some impressive average speeds.

All in all a very good day enjoyed by all riders and a massive thank you to the Wollongong cycling club for their assistance and hospitality.

The 2015 Police Equestrian Games were held at Bi Centennial Park at Camden on 14/15th March, with the largest amount of entries we have ever had. The weather was magnificent and thanks to Patrick at Camden Council, the grounds were looking pristine.

Saturdays events consisted of Dressage and Showjumping and novelty events. Some excellent combinations, both horse and rider competed for some outstanding sponsored prizes and of course he beautiful medals. Our novelty events bought us some thrills and spills but everyone was straight back into competing on the Sunday.

Sunday held the 3 ring hack show which shows the cadence and obedience of the horse and rider with the cross country Sunday afternoon showing speed and bravery.

Overall individual and team events saw Kristel James take out the individual pointscore on her horse Hyson Green and

Kelli Adams, Vivian Motbey, Kristel James and Gaye James take out the teams event.

It was a fabulous event and we look forward to out next event in two years.

Thanks to all the sponsors, committee, judges and volunteers for making this a very successful event

fun run/walk (4km & 8km course)

What a wonderful and suburb location for a walk or run, overlooking Wollongong Beach, Lighthouse and the small sheltered Harbour.

It was extremely beautiful, very pleasant weather conditions with a bit of sun but no wind around 5pm on Monday 16th February, 2015 . The 3 walkers in the “4km Walk”, the 5 runners in the” 4km Run” had 2 laps of the course whilst the 13 runners in the “8km Run” did it 4 times.

I was greatly assisted by the “Policing in Volunteers” who assisted at the turn around locations and a very big thank you for their involvement. I have to also thank Athletics NSW official timers, Sussan Newton and Stan Stark, for their assistance.

The results are as follows:4km Walk Name Age Group Time

This event isn’t the biggest within the schedule of the Police Games but is one that allows everyone of any level of fitness to enjoy themselves and be rewarded by “having a go”…. To everyone who assisted, participated or even just came and watched their loved ones a VERY BIG thank you.

See you at the next Police Games.

Thankyou for participating in the recent Police Games held in Wollongong.

From the Games organisers, it was the games largest registrations for over 15 years, exceeding 1600. Golf we had 53 which was also up on recent games.

Have had many positive feedback from the golf perspective - many impressed with the course and club house. This information has ben relayed back to the golf club, whom are going to include it in their newsletter.

With our 11am tee off, I was expecting the day to be windy. Remarkably it was as still as it could possibly get at that location. Had we played the following day it was like a cyclone on the course.

For those that had to leave before the presentation, here are the winning scores (medals)

GOLD: Timothy HANNON (hcp 8) 35 pts

SILVER: Stephen WEBB (hcp 0) 35 pts

half marathon (21.1kms)

hockey (mixed)

Wollongong, what a great location to conduct a running event. The Half Marathon Course is 21.1km in length, this course was mostly flat and on varied footpath/cycleways from Wollongong Beach, Win Stadium, Wollongong Lighthouse through to North Bellambi and return with only a few roads to cross. There was bitumen, gravel and of course concrete..

That was the course. Now for the weather conditions!

At the start time of 8am, Thursday 19th February, 2015 the sun mercilessly beat down with no clouds or a breath of wind to give the runners any reprieve, it was in the vicinity of 27 degrees (however it felt more than 30plus whilst out on the course). The conditions were to take its toll on one participant who collapsed and was taken to hospital for treatment. I am very glad to report she is doing well. She said “thank you” to all who assisted her. Start time for next Police Games Half Marathon will be in the cooler part of the morning.

26 participants started. With three Aid Stations (Water and Sports drinks/bananas/gels) on the course, (vicisted twice) were very well utilised by the participants. Our cyclists, Games Director, Jim Pendergast (lead) and Donna Hiscox (sweeper)did a great job.

Mountain bikes – Wylde Mountain bike park Cecil Hills

On a much warmer Wednesday morning Mtn bike riders gathered at the newly constructed Wylde Mountain bike park at Cecil Hills. This was to be only the 2nd event held at this venue and the first for the police games.

The riders had to complete a full 12 klm lap before embarking on a 2nd 6klm loop. The mass start was a site to see with 33 riders competing for the holeshot and the advantage of having first crack at the single track.

First rider through after 12 klm’s was Belly who was setting a cracking pace and was some 2 minutes clear of 2nd placed rider Falzon and also another minute ahead of track builder and Police officer Barnesy. Next notable mention should be Andy Oberg who still battles away on a 26” mtn bike and then there was Wayne De Belin who rode a single speed (no gears at all). Childs was the fastest of the ladies and was sitting in 16th outright.

Belly continued to dominate the 18klm race and completed the course 3 minutes ahead of 2nd placed Falzon who managed to maintain his 30 sec advantage over Barnesy in outright 3rd. Childs was first female rider home 3 mins ahead of Beer.

All riders appeared to be happy with the venue and certainly appeared to have had fun. Thank you to the Western Sydney Parklands for the use of this wonderful venue.

petanque (french bowls)

The Petanque (Boules) was held at the German Club in Berkeley. The Wollongong Petanque Club helped us out with their grounds, and I want to thank that club and especially Marie-Anne and Ross.

There were 9 players entered for the boules, and this was the first time it had been held in the NSW Police Games.

The first competition was the triples and this was a round robin event.

Gold Grant Manning Sheriff’s

John Morrison Sheriff’s

Susie McDonnell Sheriff’s

Silver Peter Smith Police Bank

Steve Hancock Sheriff’s

Cathie Mulhall Sheriff’s

Bronze Geraldine Albonatz Police Mental Health Nurse

Ceri Walker Police

Derek Pontois Police

The next event was the doubles event and this was a round robin and then graded.

A Grade

Gold Grant Manning and John Morrison Sheriff’s

Silver Ceri Walker and Derek Pontios Police

B Grade

Gold Cathie Mulhall/ Susie McDonnell and interchange Steve Hancock Sheriff’s

Silver Peter Smith and Police Bank and Geraldine Albonatz Police Nurse

The singles was the last event on the day and the time was getting on. So, instead of a round robin and then A and B grade, we shortened this and made it straight knockout and then points for and against over 2 games. So, gave 2 medals out for each based on this scoring system. And the total points scored.

Gold Derek Pontios Grant Manning Police Sheriff’s.

Silver Peter Smith Susie McDonnell Police Bank Sheriff’s

Bronze John Morrison Ceri Walker Sheriff’s Police.

A great day as had by all. Including lunch at the German Club, and a few drinks at the completion of the competition.

The Pistol shooting event was moved to Wollongong, and hosted by the Illawarra Pistol Club down in Shell Harbour. Very hearty thanks go to the IPC for allowing us to use their club to host our games. The Saturday could not have been better with a perfect sunny day on Saturday 14th march 2015.

Having moved to the “GONG” a lot of time and effort went into planning this very successful event. Competitor’s numbers were up, considering 99% of the competitors had to travel 1-2 hours, it was a terrific turn out. I make note of the Top Gun for the day flew down from QLD to compete. (Tony Kent)

It was great to see a number of new shooters and the sport of pistol shooting is regaining its numbers from years gone past. As did all the shooting events (Clay Target, Rifle and Pentathlon)

With 32 shooters competing in all but one age category, somewhere hotly contested. Only 1 point separated first and second in the 48 Round PPC. First place Vince Pezzulo NSWPF and Tony Kent ADF. It was great to see so many familiar faces again. Also family members of serving competitors competing.

A noted fact was the increase in serving police taking the time to compete in shooting events. Well done!

Congratulations to all the shooters competing in the games and for their efforts throughout the day, assisting in running of the event. Without your help it would not be such a terrific day.

The TOP GUN for the event was Tony Kent (ADF), followed up by Grahame Ross (NSWPF) and in third place was Simon Peirce (Customs)

NSW Police Force team took out the teams event Australian Defence Force second and in third place was Customs. Thanks to all that assisted on the day.
