Patrick Lindsay, on his websitedescribed our guest speaker as a“showman, sportsman and survivor”but Bill Harris, who now at 96 onceplayed rugby league for Canterbury-Bankstown in 1943-44, and moreimportantly is a former member of theNSW Police Force having served for32 years! He is the oldest-living NSWDetective and is the oldest firstgrade rugby league player alive. His recollection of stories of his lifeas a police officer, were extremelydetailed and very funny. Agentleman and a pleasure to meet.

Australian author Patrick Lindsaycompleted the work on ‘True Blue…150 Years of Service and Sacrifice’ – tracing theForce’s remarkable journey from the nation’s European birth totoday, through the eyes of its members. The book honours thecourage, resolution and sacrifices of police and celebrate theircontribution to the community, is now on sale.

Commissioner Scipione said it’s a significant milestone in theForce’s history. “NSW Police Force has come a long way in 150 years and is now one of the largest policing organisations inthe English-speaking world – with more than 15,600 swornofficers and close to 4000 civilian staff”.

“Patrick Lindsay’s book captures the spirit of the Force byinterweaving evocative images with stories about the characters

and events that have formed our wonderfulheritage”.

The angling event for the 2012 NSW Police Games was proudlyhosted by the NSW Fishing Club Inc., fishing focused on LakeMacquarie, Swansea Channel and to sea. The competition ranover 48 hours from 12md on Sunday 25th to 12md on Tuesday27th March 2012.

36 anglers registered for this year's event. Anglers travelled fromas far away as Tarcutta, Wagga Wagga and Yass in the South,Gilgandra in the West. Anglers fished using a variety oftechniques covering both inshore and offshore fisheries. Themajority of anglers caught fish, but the score sheets revealedthat the majority of anglers found the fishing more challengingthen previous years. Although this year, only 3 of the 36registered anglers failed to return a legal fish. A catch andrelease format was utilised with the majority of fish caughtreturned to the water.

The weather on the Monday proved challenging with high windsmaking the fishing conditions difficult. Some suffered as a result, but battled through their sea sickness and managed to place onthe leader board.

A number of anglers brought there sons, who fished side by sidewith the older salts. These juniors made a fear show forthemselves, placing on the podium. We encourage anglers not toforget their daughters, with 4 lady anglers laying the challengedown to their male counterparts, putting some to shame. Thesegirls can fish. The future of our sport is in the hands of thesetalented young anglers.

A social BBQ was held on the Monday night for competinganglers to catch up away from the heat of competition. At aninformal meeting a vote was taken with a proposed change oflocation to facilitate the southern anglers that have beentravelling north to compete for so many years. At the BBQ andagain at the Tuesday presentation the NSW Police Fishing Clubran a raffle and a number of draws which were eagerlysupported by the competitors. Over all $260 was raised whichhas been proudly donated to the David Rixon memorial fund.

The event was down on numbers this year, we missed BrettKuehner bringing his entire family and cousins. This was madeup for by Phil Busst who brought along a lot of Busst childrenof varying ages. The day started off well with increasing cloudto almost twilight for the last event, we just completed thepresentations when the well publicised thunder and lightningstorm struck. We were again graced by new Club member andbudding Politician Richard Smolenski, who regaled us withtales of his narrow defeat in the NSW State elections. Hisshooting is improving. It was a pleasure to see a few newcompetitors from Corrective Services and Richards crew fromAust Customs. Our only female shooter Sharon Osbournepulled out after two rounds. Perhaps we will see her next year.A special appearance was made by Rick Daly and Wally.

Special mention again to Shari Busst who again with Philorganised the BBQ. It was an absolute feast as always.

The afternoon of the 29th March, 2012 commenced with thickand very threatening black clouds above BlacktownInternational Athletic Stadium, Rooty Hill. The entire registrationset up had to be moved to the protection of under the Stadiumas the wind grew stronger.

33 competitors and with the support of a few very hardyvolunteers, the runs (7km/4km) and 4km walk commenced justafter 6pm. The fading light held out, the rain went around usand everyone safety returned to the Stadium. The evening wasfinalised with the presentations, a very enjoyable bbq and acouple of drinks.

I would like to say thank you to the volunteers; the competitorsand Mark Gibson of Blacktown Council for making the event asuccessful one. A special mention to our youngest competitorsKaitlyn Fischer (11yrs) and former Australian representative,Alan Atkens (70yrs). Well done everyone.

There were 21 prospective competitors entered in the OpenWater Swim Event, however despite beautiful sunny conditions, only 14 participants left the beach to undertake the 1.5kilometre course shortly after 10am, off Queenscliff.

Tricky conditions in the surf zone but smooth and calm waterswere experienced by the competitors throughout the swim.Again tricky conditions and some larger sets greeted theswimmers as they returned to the Beach, through the surfzone. A GREAT swim, was talked about whilst the competitorswound down & relaxed together at the Queenscliff SLSC for thePresentations afterwards.

The Pistol shooting event was contested at the Kurrajong PistolClub. With numbers slightly up on years gone past this may beattributed to competitors wanting to shoot up the mountains.

With 33 shooters competing in all age categories, some wherehotly contested. The results show this. It was great to see somany familiar faces again. Also a number of new shooters.Customs numbers have increased and they in fact camesecond in the teams' event, beating out the ADF.

The local members of Kurrajong Pistol Club shoot along sideus in their own event, and loved the friendly rivalry. I can'tspeak highly enough of how welcome they made thecompetitors of the 2012 Police Games feel. The facilitateswhere terrific, and lunch consisted of 3 course meal with hotcorned silverside and veggies for the main. The price was verycheap. Every shooter had a full belly.

Serving NSW Police numbers had been on the decline for anumber year, but we are now seeing a turn around to this. Soplease contact the NSW Police Pistol Club and enquire aboutjoining now. Improve your shooting skills and travel to competeagainst other state police agencies.

Congratulations to Tony Kent form ADF for taking out top gunand to the NSW Police Team for taking out the team's event. Many thanks to all who assisted on the day.
