Lord Mayor’s Welcome

m e s s a g e f r o m t h e

Lord Mayor of Wollongong

It’s with great pleasure that I welcome the participants of the NSW Police and Emergency Services Games to Wollongong from 11-16 March 2017. To be able to host such an exciting event for those who do so much for our community is a great thrill.

I would encourage you spend some extra time in our region before or after competition to soak up some sun on our picturesque beaches or for a change of scenery take a bush walk along the escarpment or through the rainforest. After a hard days competition take advantage of Wollongong’s thriving small bar and café scene to celebrate with friends.

Best of luck throughout the games – here’s hoping the competition is fierce and the weather is kind.

2017

Just as it does in the community we serve, sport plays an important role in the culture of the NSW Police Force.

Throughout our history athletes, sports administrators and supporters of all ages and abilities have found a welcome place in the police family. We have a proud history of Olympic and Commonwealth Games medal winners, prominent football players in all codes, iron men and women, tri-athletes,

and champions in many other team and individual sports. And just as importantly we have thousands of enthusiastic amateurs who head to local sportsgrounds, gymnasiums, swimming pools and golf courses whenever they can.

So with that in mind, I strongly encourage members of the police family – sworn, unsworn, former and retired officers – to get involved in the 2017 Police Games.

Whether you are an elite sportsperson, an enthusiastic amateur or simply a passionate sports fan, please visit the NSW Police Games website (nswpolicegames.com.au) to find out what’s on and see what we have to look forward to at the 2017 Games.

Message from Commissioner Andrew P Scipione APM

The 2017 NSW Police Games sees this unique multi-sport event celebrate 32 years of competition. An amazing achievement considering the event is managed by volunteer NSW Police Officers (serving and sworn). It is with great pride that I witness the staging of the 2017 NSW Police Games in Wollongong from Saturday, 11th March through to Thursday, 16th March.

More than 35 different sports will be contested, with all NSW Police Force employees, including Volunteers In Policing and Police Bank employees, invited to participate. Employees from numerous other

government agencies are also encouraged to compete ensuring great rivalry amongst the NSW agencies.

Participation is the key to the events success – so I urge you to register online for these Games. The event is for keen, fit and committed competitors, as well as the fun-loving, laid back sports lover who simply is looking to have a good time. There are events for everyone.

Thank you to our sponsors Police Bank, Destination Wollongong, Police Health, NSW Police Council of Sport and Central Media.

Registrations are via the Games website www.nswpolicegames.com.au with an online accommodation portal available at visitwollongong.com.au or call 1800 240 737.

Catch and Release is encouraged and will be facilitated. This does not mean that you must release any fish that you are legally entitled to keep if you wish but rather in the interests of conservation you may release any or all of your fish and still score the same amount of points.

All NSW Recreational Fishing Rules and Regulations apply. A current Recreational Fishing Licence must be held and produced prior to competing.

Score SheetsScore sheets are to be presented to the organisers no later than 1300 hours, Tuesday, 21st March 2017 at the presentation location. Presentations commence at 12.00 hrs. To assist in tallying results, competitors are to ensure that they clearly mark each score sheet with all information requested in particular:-

1. Anglers class – Junior or Senior

2. Area of catch – Inshore or Offshore.

3. Time and date fish caught.

This information is needed to tally results accurately. Sheets not containing adequately information may be deemed void.

aquathon (sean maroney memorial aquathon)

Event Description:The 32nd NSW Police Games will be held in Wollongong from Saturday, 11th March to Thursday, 16th March. An Aquathon event is part of these Games and will be held at Belmore Basin. The grassed area west of Levindi Restaurant under the pine trees will be used for the registration and transition area.

At 9.50am competitors will assemble on the eastern side of the Belmore Basin where a safety briefing will be held. At 10am competitors will enter the water and swim for a distance of 750 metres around the Belmore Basin (they will be led by a paddle boarder). The swim route will be around the concrete weigh station and once rounding the station they will then head towards the harbour entrance. Swimmers will then cross the entrance of the harbour heading west for approx.. 200 metres and then turn left

before swimming back to the beach. The swimmers will compete 1 lap of the harbour. They will then exit the water on the eastern side and run up the stairs located at this point of the beach to the walkway/footpath where they will make their way to the transition area on the lawn on the western side of Levendi Restaurant. The complete course is located on the NSW Police Games website www.nswpolicegames.com.au.

The event, as the name suggests, also honours the memory of the late Sean Maroney, who was an elite triathlete. All proceeds received from the Sport Fee will be donated to the McGrath Foundation and Police Legacy. Entry is online only via the Games website. We encourage everyone to take part and enjoy raising funds for such a worthwhile cause.

paintball Overview

Paintball is the fastest growing extreme sport in Australia at the moment. We have organised packages for those who wish to play but don’t have their own gear. If you have played paintball before and are concerned about the cost we have secured great prices for paintballs, as well as hire equipment. The day will cost a lot less than if you were to organise a normal day with work colleagues or friends. So if you want to “shoot” your friends then get a team together (five at least) or contact the sports co-ordinator who will find you a team.

All levels will be catered for from beginners through to the experienced. Drinks will be available from the venue but you will need to bring your own lunch or some money for either pizza or a barbeque.

soccer (beach)

OverviewThe NSW Police Games Beach Soccer (mixed) event is an exciting addition to the Games programme. What better location to hold it than at North Beach Wollongong.

Beach soccer, also known as beach football or beasal, is a variant of association football played on a beach or some form of sand. The game emphasises skill, agility and shooting at goal.

Whilst football has been played informally on beaches for many years, the introduction of beach football was an attempt to codify rules for the game. This was done in 1992 by the founders of Beach Soccer Worldwide, a company set up to develop the sport and responsible for the majority of its tournaments to this day. This was a major foundation for what is now known as beach football and what has led to the sport rapidly growing in popularity.

I encourage Local Area Commands (police) and other agencies to embrace this fun event and register a team for a great day in the sun, on one of Australia’s best beaches!

Event DescriptionHalves will be 7 minutes. Extra time only in playoff or medal matches (this is dependent on number of teams registered).

Throw-ins and kick-ins mean the pace and flow of the game is much faster than regular football. Shoes are not allowed, although ankle guards are permitted. Goal kicks are taken by the goalkeeper using his hands to throw the ball.

A beach soccer pitch is considerably smaller than a regular football pitch. In international competition, the pitch is composed entirely of sand and is cleared of pebbles and seashells, along with any other objects which could injure a player.

The pitch is rectangular in shape, and the touch line is longer than the goal line.

touch football (mixed)

OverviewThe 2017 NSW Police Games touch football event is a mixed event, with a maximum of 14 players per team.

Event DescriptionThe rules are quite simple, and even if it’s your first time playing, you will pick up the basics in no time and enjoy the game with your teammates, no matter what everyone’s skill level is.

Basically, while attacking, you have to run forward and pass the ball backward; that means the ball carrier is up front, with his teammates on the same line or slightly behind them, so they can pass the ball to them.

Defenders only need to ‘touch’ the ball carrier to stop the attacking team; the rules of the game stipulate that the ‘touch’ has to be made ‘with the minimum force necessary’. It can be done on any part of the body, including the ball or clothing. The ‘touch’ can also be made by the ball carrier on a defensive player.

After making a ‘touch’, the defending team has to go backward behind an imaginary ‘defensive’ line, approximately five metres away from where the touch has been made; the referee will show you where they expect you to be. The ball carrier has to perform a ‘rollball’, on the exact mark where the ‘touch’ was made. Be careful not to be ‘over the mark’ when performing a roll ball.

Your team will have six ‘touches’ as your opportunity to score. The sixth ‘touch’, dropping the ball or any infringement to the rules result in a changeover and the attacking team then becomes the defending side.

The rules of the game are easy to understand and suitable for everyone to enjoy Touch Football.

For a complete version of the rules of the game, please follow the link or visit the Rules and Policies section of the TFA website www.austouch.com.au.

RulesThe aim of the game is to score touchdowns by getting through the opponent team’s part of the field and placing the ball down in the touchdown zone.

Teams are made of up to 14 players, with a maximum of six (some local rules allow seven) players on the field at any time with unlimited substitutions. Teams may have a maximum of three (3) and minimum two (2) males on the field at any time. If only two (2) females are available to play, the team must play one player short.

The game lasts 45 minutes, divided into two 20 minutes halves and a five minute half-time break. Depending on the number of teams, the game time may be shortened.

just before the game, team captains gather with the referee/s for the toss. The winner gets the ball and chooses which direction they want their team to run.

The game starts with a ‘tap’ on the half way line.
