Central processing unit is the most important device located at the core of the computer system. It is an integrated chip housed in a plastic case. It has metal legs that fasten it to a circuit board made of fiber glass. They also carry electrical impulses into and out of CPU. It is made up of a single integrated circuit which is called microprocessor.

Central Processing Unit is one of the main components of the computer system. It executes the instructions of the program to complete a task. It process the data received by it and produces the useful information. All the tasks required to get the result are processed through central processing unit. Hence it is known as the brain of the computer system can just like a human body does not functions without the brain, a computer cannot function without a CPU.

The major responsibility of the instructions is with the CPU. The instructions executions takes place in the CPU registers. The CPU in a microcomputer is a microprocessor chip.

The CPU itself has three parts, namely, memory unit, control unit (CU) and arithmetic logic unit (ALU). The processing speed, the size of internal memory and the capability of ALU etc, all depend upon the type of microprocessor chip chosen.

It is one of the parts of central processing unit. This controls all the parts of computer. It deals with the input as per the instructions using the memory, and the ALU. After the processing, it sends results back to the memory from where they reach the output device. It helps to take stored instructions in sequence one at time. It interprets each instructions and prompts its executions by one of the units like input, output, storage or ALU.
