Over the past year and a half our TST staff has been going to school with a gifted grant writer and assessment consultant named Akiemi Glenn. Thanks to the Consuelo Foundation, we were gifted with Akiemi’s services to pilot an alternative means of gathering data for evaluating and measuring our success. Akiemi helped us realize that we are part of a small national movement called “Communities of Practice.” We wanted our students to explore this idea, but since “community of practice” (CoP) has yet to achieve broad local recognition, we decided to use the term “village” which is universally understood, hence our show title, “Takes a Village.”

In our TST village or CoP, we have customs, like any other village. We “circle up” and share one good thing before every rehearsal. The students can recite our motto like a mantra, “I am prompt, prepared, professional & please to be here.” “Pleased to be here” is an essential key for any CoP, because we all promise to “leave negativity and bad attitudes at the door,” so that we can bring our best, most compassionate self to honor our talented and generous collaborators.

Like most villages, we have evolved our own “dialect.” We speak in English but we use terms like “cheat out” and the actors know to open their bodies a quarter more to the audience so their voice and facial expressions can be heard/seen or “top his line” and the actor comes in on the end of his partner’s line before the last word evaporates. We asked the students to consider who has their back in life. Not surprisingly, families and elders are “pillars” in many homes. Sometimes back up comes from communities in school or around clubs or friendship circles. Sometimes, we discovered that “we can write a song, by listen-ing to the words that we are saying.”

Listening to what the students are saying, via reflections that are texted to us, are the centerpiece of how we gather our data for assessment. It is also how we learn from each other and move our community of practice forward into the young century.
