FROM THE COMPILER: I am standing in for John this month as he is away as we go to press. Last month Contact’s Editor, Compiler, Distribution Manager and agents all got together for our annual celebration buffet evening at The Lugger. This year we marked 39 years of Chickerell’s Contact Magazine. Thanks to everyone at The Lugger for putting on a great spread. A big thank you once again to all the sterling work carried out every month by our distribution team headed by Peter and Glenys and all the volunteers who go out in all weathers to deliver Contacts to households across our area. It is down to the work of our volunteers and the support from our advertisers that ensures Contact Magazine continues to be a success. You will find in this month’s Contact another article on Chickerell’s street names from Joy Simmonds. Thank you Joy for such an interesting piece. Also inside this month are articles regarding the Land at East Chickerell Community Consultation, which took place in the town council offices on March 19th. It was good to see so many people at the consultation keen to see the outline plan and make their views known to the developers. I do hope many of you were able to see the eclipse on March 21st; it really was quite special and I was surprised how many people stopped and took a look. Now that the evenings are getting lighter we can look forward, hopefully, to lots more sunshine. I wish you all a lovely Easter and hope you manage to meet up with family and friends if you can. NEWS and LETTERS - more overleafLAND AT EAST CHICKERELL COMMUNITY CONSULTATION: The community consultation held at the town council offices at Willowbed Hall on March 19th was well attended with a steady flow of people all afternoon. People were able to view the proposals by Persimmon Homes for development of ‘about’ 450 homes on the fields between the golf course and the new Fry’s development leading up to the back of the School Hill houses. The plans showed two access roads into the development - from the south from Chickerell Link Road, which the developers say will be managed with traffic signals and to the north via School Hill. There was some concern among the people attending about the access onto School Hill and the probable increase in traffic through to Nottington. The site for the possible new primary school was allocated for an area of land on the corner of Putton Lane and Green Lane, which access stated to be from Putton Lane.Public open space was also on set out on the plan, just north of the new school site and fronting the Link Road. Two ‘green links’ were also allocated on the plan to go through to the new Frys development. The developers say the planning application will be put in to the council in the ‘summer of 2015’. ************************************************************************************************NEWS FROM CHICKERELL COMMUNITY LIBRARY: The AGM will take place at 7.30pm on April 20th in the Library. This is a public meeting and we would be delighted to see as many people as possible on the night. We are promoting children to teen plus books this month, so put down your ‘tablets’ this Easter holiday and try a book from the library for a change. From Saturday March 28th until Thursday April 2nd there will be an Easter Egg Hunt. Coloured eggs will be hidden among the books; find all six and receive a chocolate egg! The library will be closed on Friday April 3rd, Saturday April 4th and Monday April 6th; reopening on Tuesday April 7th.Anyone interested in becoming a library volunteer - please contact Tim Wells on 01305 776994. Thank you for all your support and enjoy the Easter weekend.

*************************************************************************************************ALF’s CHARITY CHALLENGE: Alf’s Fish and Chip Shop at Fiveways is hoping to raise £5,000 to help fight prostate cancer by holding a giant raffle with a top prize of £1,000 cash. The draw for the raffle, which will be held on June 1st, is supported by other local businesses and is in aid of New-Man Prostate Cancer Support. Owner John Pearce says all are welcome to drop into the shop to make a donation or buy a ticket.

*************************************************************************************************COULD YOU BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR? A new scheme to help the over 50s in the area with jobs such as reaching a high cupboard or retuning a TV has been launched by local charity Age UK Dorchester. The Reach Out Good Neighbour Scheme has been funded initially by Dorset County Council Fund and a minimum donation of £3.00 is suggested to cover expenses. The scheme is working in partnership with Medvivo Careline who will be the initial point of contact and will pass requests on to a volunteer co-ordinator. Lisa Holmes, Head of Care at Age UK Dorchester says she hopes the scheme will provide a useful service for any older person who may struggle with a one off task: “All volunteers are registered with Age UK Dorchester and have a Disclosure and Barring check as well as training on visiting people in their homes and confidentiality. We are also very fortunate to have support from Grassbys in Dorchester, Stocktings in Weymouth and Rose in Weymouth and Portland who have agreed to help if we receive any requests for any heavy lifting tasks around the home that our volunteers are unable to do. Lisa adds that if enough volunteers come forward to be a Good Neighbour, volunteers should not be called upon too frequently: “If anyone has thought of volunteering in the past, but felt that it was too much of a commitment, becoming a Good Neighbour would fit in with a busy lifestyle as the volunteer states when they are able to complete the task. It really does fit around when they are available and the tasks they wish to help with.” If anyone would like help with a one off task they should call 01305 260289 or email [email protected] information about the scheme or to discuss becoming a Good Neighbour Volunteer, call Lisa on 01305 269444.

*************************************************************************************************OBITUARY: Joan Horne, formerly of Roundhayes Close, Weymouth, passed away peacefully at St Andrews Residential Care Home in Oxford on 15th February 2015 aged 91. Joan will be remembered for her tenacious campaigns to protect the right of way ‘Cockles Lane’ and in spearheading the campaign to adopt Markham and Little Francis as a Town Green for the people of Weymouth. Over the years she also co-ordinated the Adult Literacy Scheme, recruiting tutors and students in the Weymouth and Portland area, Just the Job a scheme for school leavers, door to door collectors for Dr Barnados, home knitters for serving forces during the Falkland and Gulf Wars and fund raised for The Dorchester Royal Eye Infirmary, Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, The League of Friends and Oxfam; so many people in Chickerell and Fleet will be sad to hear this news.

MORE LETTERS, NEWS AND EVENTS - see also local groups, clubs & societies NEWS FROM DORSET TRADING STANDARDS: This month Trading Standards wants to talk about problem traders as the officers fear people do not always report them: “If we only receive one complaint and the trader isn’t know to us it might appear to be a simple mistake or oversight on the trader’s part. In reality, however, there may be a regular pattern of repeat offending by the trader but because the others have not been reported we don’t know about it. If we are only ever seeing the tip of the iceberg we are never getting the full picture.” Trading Standards do not act upon all the complaints received but they are all recorded and used as intelligence to help focus their work: “It is all these little pieces of information we receive over time that make up the whole picture enabling us to protect customers. If you think you have been a victim of a problem trader then let us know by phone the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06. You could also call a Trading Standards approved Buy with Confidence trader who are checked, approved and monitored. There is hope for another cook but we need a leader, and someone to look after the money, so if anyone would like to take on the job, please let me know. Kelly Dolan, a member of our team, is cycling across Tanzania this October to raise funds for Woman V Cancer and has been doing a variety of events to raise money to fund her trip. To help Kelly and to celebrate Ducklings 25th year of providing Chickerell with early years childcare we shall be holding a coffee afternoon with a raffle on Wednesday 22nd April from 1.30pm – 3pm. You may also like to take this opportunity to look at our setting and register your child with us as we are currently reviewing our two year old sessions. If you would like to register your interest in our two year old sessions then please come along or call us so that we can gauge how many would like to use them; this will enable us to plan for our next intake in September 2015.Before the Easter break the children resumed PE at school alongside the children from Chickadees, which they are thoroughly enjoying. They have been learning about squats, jumping & landing safely and balancing with pointed hands & feet. The children also used bean bags, balancing beams and the climbing bars. Happy Easter!!For further information about registering your child with us or if you would like view our setting please call Sue or Kelly.

NEWS FROM CHICKADEES: We have been looking at the various jobs and occupations our friends and family have, as the children have developed their interest in different occupations and ways of life. We have invited our parents to talk to us about what their job role involves; we had some fantastic responses from parents who are police officers, nurses, vets, builders and plumbers etc.,.Much of our focus has been about celebrating our achievements. Some of our Chickadees recently have been learning new skills in gymnastics, dancing, swimming, riding bikes and playing football. We have also been testing our senses exploring sight, sounds and textures with a variety of different resources and activities both inside our setting and around our local community.Mont Blanc trek challenge: Our grateful thanks once again to everyone who sponsored us or attended our recent 80s disco night fundraiser. We had an incredibly fun evening, with some fantastic costumes from Mr T to Ozzy Osborne, Grot Bags, Rubics Cube and Teenwolf and are delighted to have raised a staggering £1005 for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust which will go towards our Mont Blanc Trek challenge in August this year.Any enquiries please contact me; Clare Ash 07414261161 or Ali on 07791030536.Please note we are closed for the Easter break from Monday 30th March and return on Monday 13th April.

*************************************************************************************************NEWS FROM CHICKERELL PRIMARY ACADEMY: We have had a very busy few weeks here at the Academy. As part of looking at how we engage children with the new curriculum, we have been using theme days to invite parents in to ‘showcase’ what they are doing in class. So far we have had a ‘Day at the Museum’ - transforming our school into a historical museum; we have run a maths workshop and as I write this, today we are hosting a ‘Me and my World’ event to look at how we study geography. In addition to this, our sports teams have been very busy. Our boy’s football team retained the Nash Cup title for the second year, the girl’s team made the semi finals of the same competition and our netball squad competed in the area tournament at Budmouth, losing in the finals. Our very talented swimmers compete in their Area Gala on Thursday, we wish them well. Our expansion programme is finally due to start in the Easter holidays. We have had to make some major changes to the start and end of the day to accommodate this and we would ask for the local community’s continued patience while this work is being completed. Happy Easter from everyone at the academy. Jody Harris, Headteacher.***************************************************************************************************NEWS FROM CHICKERELL PRIMARY ACADEMY PTA: It may still be the first quarter of 2015 but the PTA has been busy. £500 of new interactive outdoor playground equipment has been bought. Some of the playground toys had become worn and in need of replacement. It has been great to be able to use the money we raise in a way that benefits all the children. On February 13th the school and PTA had a ‘Dare to Wear Red’ day. All children wanting to wear a item of non school red clothing donated a £1. A fantastic £250 was raised from this day. Coming up we have the ‘bags to school’. Any items of clothing, bedding, towels need to be delivered to school. You don’t need to have children at the school to support this. Any clothes bagged and delivered to the school will be sent off and the proceeds from this will come to the PTA. We now have our own Facebook page; search Facebook for Chickerell Primary Academy PTA to see what is going on.Dates for your diary: 23rd April, next PTA meeting, 7pm at The Lugger – all welcome.25th April: Tidy and paint KS1 playground, bring a paintbrush, come and join in and get a bacon sandwich!

***************************************************************************************************CHICKERELL YOUTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE: From Jenny Hart: I would like to make people aware of some changes at Chickerell Youth and Community Centre. Shortly after Easter my office base will be located at Chickerell Youth and Community Centre. This is good news for me because I will be available at the centre more often. The young people will also benefit from some improvements to the kitchen, the office and heating. I will provide an update when I have moved in. The session time will also be changing after Easter for the Monday Juniors session. The opening times will now be 6.30 – 9pm. I understand that some parents might not wish for their child to be at the club until 9pm, therefore we are happy for you to collect your child at anytime during the session. We do not permit the Juniors to leave the session unless they are being collected by you, or you have informed us that the young person is permitted to leave the centre unaccompanied. The age range for the Junior session will remain school years 6 & 7 up until the end of this school academic year. From September 2015, the age range for the Junior Session will be for young people in school years 7 & 8. This change is to ensure that we are better able to address the needs of young people in our target age range which is ages 13-19. The sessions at Chickerell Youth Centre as of September 2015 will be as follows: Monday – School years 7 & 8, 6.30 – 9pm, cost 50p. Tuesday – School years 8 & 9, 6.30 – 9.30pm cost 50p. Thursday – School years 9 and above, 6.30 – 9.30pm, cost 50p. If you have any concerns or wish to discuss the matter further please contact me on 01305 771861, alternatively my mobile number is 07827 356759.

NEWS REPORT FROM MARCH 2015 CHICKERELL TOWN COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING

In the democratic discussion period prior to the meeting, two groups of residents from Aldabrand Close and Barnes Wallis Close spoke over their concerns about parking which has been causing access and road safety concerns. After some discussion, it was agreed double yellow lines down one side of Aldabrand Close could be a solution. The problems faced by residents in Barnes Wallis Close related to their access via Everdene Drive. Here it was felt that restrictions on parking between the hours of 9am and 3.15pm could be a solution. The council agreed to contact the county highways department regarding possible parking restrictions. It was also suggested that the headmaster of Budmouth could be contacted to ask if more parking could be made available within the college grounds.

Tree work: Councillors were asked to comment on an application for work on a tree at White Rose Court, East Street. The request was a 30 per cent reduction in the crown of a sycamore. Comments were requested because of any possible impact it could have on the conservation area in the village. Councillors felt it was better to reduce the tree than cut it down completely.Putton Lane footpath: Councillors were told that the ‘final hurdle’ was to receive agreement from the bus company as the work affected a bus route. Coast road: Coun Jean Dunseith asked if highways could be contacted to paint a 40 miles an hour warning sign on the surface of the road where it leads up to Knights in the Bottom from before the entrance to the new Frys estate. It was felt this might help increase road safety in this area particularly at night.

CHICKERELL TOWN COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING continuedChanges to the local plan: Councillors considered West Dorset and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s recommendations for main modifications to the local plan. Part of the modifications included removing the words ‘employment, community uses and open space’ relating to development of land at Putton Lane. Town councillors stated they wanted the community facilities and open spaces, which should include allotments, to remain in the wording of the plan. The Town Council also wanted it noted it was ‘very keen’ for space near the centre of the village to be retained for a possible future health centre.New road names: Councillors agreed road names for the new Frys estate off Putton Lane could be called after the previous owners of the fields and another, suggested by a local resident, was to be named after a historic family name in the village. Ideas for the former play area on East Street: Ducklings playgroup asked if it could use this area to site a ‘transportable building’ (Portacabin). But councillors felt it was not a suitable site for the playgroup because of the lack of water and sewage facilities.Money for plants: A request by the volunteers who help maintain the Peto Gardens behind the library for £50 to pay for plants was agreed by councillors.

*************************************************************************************************FROM COUN IAN GARDNER: Re: East Chickerell Community Consultation at Willowbed Hall, March 19th:“Many residents expressed to me concerns over the proposed development on various grounds including traffic generation, school places, loss of wildlife habitat, flood risk. I can assure readers that such matters will be taken into account by WDDC if and when a planning application is submitted.“However, objecting now to the principle of developing the site for housing is more difficult since this ‘Persimmons’ site was identified in 2008 under the then Government’s Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment. That National exercise was a key component of the evidence base to support the delivery of sufficient land for housing to meet the need for more homes. This led to the site being included as part of ‘Chic 2’ in the draft West Dorset Local Plan in 2011 which was the subject of widespread consultation in Summer 2012. Chickerell Town Council did not raise objections to the allocation of this site in the Local Plan which was subsequently considered at the Government’s Planning Inspectorate’s enquiry in November 2014. The final version of the Local Plan will be published shortly inclusive, I am led to believe, of the CHIC 2 housing site allocation. If so the principle of housing on the site will be confirmed.“Moreover before the Local Pan is published later this Year WDDC has little defence under the current National Planning Policy Framework against Planning Applications for housing on sustainable sites that WDDC has not included in its draft Local Plan. For example housing approved at the Wessex Stadium contrary to WDDC’s draft Local Plan Policy.”

NICK’S NOTES ON THE NIGHT SKYWell, cloud might have stopped us seeing the eclipse in many places in the UK, but it had enough breaks over Chickerell to allow me to take this picture, around 15 minutes before maximum coverage, and just before it got cold! A really remarkable experience to stand and watch, in my own back garden, something that has puzzled (and scared) our ancestors, for thousands of years. Many are the stories of dragon, wolves and a multitude of other creatures taking a bite out of the Sun. However fanciful we might think those to be, are they any less amazing than the idea that the sun is 400 times further away from the earth than the moon, but the latter happens to be 400 times closer. Cosmic coincidence, certainly, but still a matter of fact that has helped shape our thinking for millennia! This month there are some great views to be had of both Jupiter and Saturn, in the eastern

NEWS FROM CHICKERELL UTD FC:The Chickens are hoping for a double yoker in their first season back at the stalls. A place has already been secured in the Dorset Senior Trophy, after a very well supported, 2-0 success in the semi-final against Portland United. The final is against Bridport Reserves on Tuesday 28th April at 19.45 with the venue yet to be announced. At the time of going to press Chickerell have five games left and a victory in each game would guarantee the league title – come on you Chickens!!! The reserves unfortunately are not enjoying such a successful season and find themselves languishing at the bottom of Division 2 and running out of games. It is intended that Chickerell United Football Club will hold a Barn Dance on Saturday 16th May;

an evening that should be fun and enjoyment. More details will be published in May’s Contact.Scoop

sky soon after sunset, and Venus is looking brilliant in the west, just 30 minutes or so after sunset. Later in the month, watch out for the Lyrid meteor shower, with an hourly maximum of around 10 shooting stars an hour. It is not one of the most prolific showers, but well known for producing some bright and faster shooting stars. This meteor shower is one of the oldest showers to be observed, with records of observations from the seventh century BC, from China. This year it will be in a relatively moon-free sky, and the shooting stars are best looked for after midnight on the 22nd of April. Like many meteor showers, they can be seen for several days before and after this date, but it does represent the peak, so, if you can, a good night to pop outdoors for an hour and see what you can see - perhaps you can let us know?

************************************************************************************************NATURE NOTES: WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN IN CHICKERELL: As I write, spring has definitely sprung, with a great increase in our resident birds singing (chaffinch and greenfinch being two of the latest to join the early morning frenzy) and some of the early summer migrants, such as chiffchafs and blackcaps, have joined in as well. Sand martins and wheatears have also been seen; even house martins have started to arrive and, by the time this goes to print, our first swallow will have arrived, meaning summer can’t be far behind.

INSECTSInsects are on the move too. As well as an increase in the sightings of bumblebees, we are starting to see flies and midges on warmer days and butterflies are coming out of hibernation and probing the early flowers for a drink of energy giving nectar.

HEDGEROWSIn the hedgerows the wonderful white blast of colour that is blackthorn has been with us for a week or so and, just behind it, leaf buds are beginning to burst as well. At first they give the hedge a slight green tinge, almost transparent, as the buds break out of their protective sheaths but then they explode and, it seems to me, that the hedgerow is, almost overnight, cloaked in green, providing a haven for breeding birds and a larder for caterpillars, who feed on the new leaves. The birds can then feed the caterpillars to their rapidly growing chicks.

WARMTH OF THE SUNAlthough this sequence of events happens each year, it is still an amazing synchronisation of life, driven by nothing more then the increasing warmth of the sun and the growing length of the day. A complex web of interacting and interdependent life, connected by the simplest of links, a web within which we, human beings, are an integral and important part, affecting it by our actions, but drawing strength from it as well.

NATURAL WORLDSo, as the days lengthen, and life begins again, make a ‘new life’ resolution, and get out and see the wonderful natural world that surrounds us and sustains us!

Our thanks to Joy for the following article:ORIGIN OF SOME CHICKERELL STREET NAMES

Rashley Road The Rashleys have lived in Chickerell for at least 200 years but Rashley Road is specifically named after Charles Frederic Rashley (1869-1956). He was born in Chickerell in 1869 and, as a young man, moved away from the area to join the Metropolitan Police. He married Hetty (Kitty) Christophers in London in 1896. Although they had no children of their own, they brought up Charles’s nephew, Edwin Charles Oldridge. His wife, Hetty, died in 1921. As a police sergeant, his service in London covered the years of the First World War. It was during this time that he witnessed much devastation in the capital which was then under attack by German Zeppelins (Airships). In due course, he returned to Chickerell. Charles Frederic Rashley became a Parish Councillor and served as Chairman of Chickerell Parish Council 1928-1930.

Rex Lane Frederick John Rex (1871-1959) was a Market Gardener who lived in The Manor House (now demolished) on the site now occupied by the car parking area in front of Chickerell’s hairdresser and chemist. The house backed onto East Street and faced the greenhouses of his market garden, which extended down to the corner of Lower Way. His business was extensive and he cultivated fields off Lower Way and at Higher End, where he grew produce & flowers including tomatoes, onions and sweetpeas. Frederick Rex married Lucy Travers in Holy Trinity, Weymouth, in 1895. Lucy was only 39 when she died in 1908 and Fred was left to care for their four surviving children, all less than 12 years of age. In 1911 his mother, Ann, was living with him and his young family. In 1923 he married Jeanne

E. Priestley (nee Dean).Fred Rex was Chairman of Chickerell Parish Council 1920-1921.

Spiller Road Robert Spiller (1851-1941) served as a Chickerell Councillor for 39 years and was Chairman of Chickerell Parish Council five times between 1906 and 1934. He was a Boot & Shoe Maker and lived with his wife, Martha, in Rose Cottage, Chickerell. He ran his business from home and was assisted by his son, Fred. At the outbreak of World War One, Fred joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a gunner – he was killed in action on 1st July 1917. Robert’s daughter, Florence ‘Florrie’ Spiller, was herself well known in the village as an Elementary School Teacher at Chickerell School.

All three men (Rashley, Rex & Spiller) were prominent figures in Chickerell and were heavily involved in village life – including roles within the church, the school and the library.

JOY SIMMONDS 2015*************************************************************************************************

LOOK BACK TO CONTACT APRIL 1983:• The WI was all set to have a demonstration on how to make artificial flowers in the Church Hall on April 13th and

looking forward to a mystery tour later in the month.• Chickerell Monday Club planned a demonstration on wok cooking at the end of May.• Chickerell Post Office Stores announced it had new supplies of Robin wool ‘just in’.*************************************************************************************************THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH: I was really saddened to read the other day that words such as buttercup, lark, bluebell and cygnet had been removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary because the publishers felt they were no longer relevant to modern children. Instead they had added words such as blog, chatroom and cut-and-paste. What a shame! One of the joys of my childhood was going out looking for wildflowers and being delighted to spot cowslips and primroses. Do children really not go out and look at nature any more so have no need for these words? I cannot believe it. May be making daisy chains really is a thing of the past. I know, unfortunately, that ‘baby swan’ has replaced cygnet among many people even though cygnet is a much more interesting word. It is certainly more of a challenge to spell! What a bland world it will be if we lose our language for nature...

*************************************************************************************************IT HAPPENED IN APRIL:Did you know that: On April 6th, 1917, America entered World War I; on April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit that infamous iceberg and on April 30th 1948 the first Land Rover was unveiled at a motor show in Holland.
