Equality and Esther
In the story of Purim, it took Queen Esther a while to understand that she had to make her own Jewish voice heard. Fortunately, Esther did
just that. She proceeded to save the Jewish people of her day and we celebrate that sacred moment at Purim this month.
The role of women has changed significantly since Queen Esther’s time and today. Today we see women actively participating in all aspects of Jewish life, both here and in Israel. In Israel, women serve leadership roles, not only in the armed services and the Knesset, but also in religious life. There are now 42 Reform congregations in Israel (the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism) in which women have the opportunity to be Temple presidents, read Torah, and lead their communities as rabbis and cantors. Reform Rabbis trained in Israel, both women and men, lead women to bat mitzvah, guide them in egalitarian wedding ceremonies, and allow and encourage women to recite Kaddish for their loved ones at those moments of grief and loss. A few young women have even become bat mitzvah at the Kotel, the Western Wall.
But those opportunities are still too few and far between.
This year, we Reform Jews have the ability to affect Israeli religious life and generate resources to grow the Reform Jewish presence in Israel—by voting and participating in the World Zionist Congress Elections.
The World Zionist Congress (WZC) meets every five years to discuss issues of vital importance to the global Jewish community, such as Jewish identity, peace and security, anti-Semitism, civil society in Israel, and the future of the State of Israel. Voting in the upcoming 37th WZC Elections offers us a unique opportunity to cast our votes to send delegates to the WZC to represent our voices.
When we vote, we stand tall, knowing we join
with Esther in making our voices heard for the future of Judaism and especially Judaism in Israel. You and I can vote for greater religious equality in Israel by simply going to www.reformjews4israel.org/vote, registering, and voting the ARZA: Representing Reform Judaism slate.
Together we can help create a dynamic Reform Judaism is Israel, that includes the voices of women and men; those born Jewish and those who have chosen Judaism.
By voting ARZA, we will generate funds for education, youth work, social justice and pastoral care for the Israeli Reform movement.
By voting ARZA, we will strengthen Reform Judaism’s call for the values we cherish and will grant the Reform movement influence in the quality of Jewish religious life in Israel.
Together let’s get out the vote! (I voted in January. Everyone has until April 30, 2015, to cast her or his vote.)

Megillah On the Roof
On Wednesday, March 4, right after religious school, we will be presenting this year’s Purim spiel (Yiddish for skit or play), which
is a parody based on the beloved musical Fiddler On the Roof.
The idea of spoofing the Purim story, using a musical as the vehicle, seems to be in vogue in synagogues across America. The idea is certainly not new or unique to Temple Sinai. It’s believed that this silly and creative tradition started in Europe as early as the 1400s, with performers creating comedic monologues about the Purim story and performing in homes. The popularity of spiels grew so much that in the 1700’s and 1800s, Jewish communities did spoofs
on many different biblical stories, not just the book of Esther. Over the centuries, spiels have taken many forms, as plays, musicals, puppet shows, poems, and monologues.
Much gratitude to Joyce Moskowitz for directing this year’s spiel, Jason Marx for his skillful sound editing, and all the congregants who have dedicated so much of their time and talent. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I hope to see you there!

More than Just a BuildingLast month, my article concentrated on the status
of our capital campaign and repairing our building. While this project continues to move forward, there are countless efforts being made by our clergy, leadership and committees to strengthen and improve our community from within. Each month I see how these efforts are paying off and our temple is reaping the benefits of having an active, involved community.
Thanks to our Membership Committee, this fiscal year 21 new families joined Temple Sinai. Many of the new members have already made a home here. They have formed connections by joining a chavurah, a committee or campership. We had 180 people at our Tu BiSh’vat Seder in early March. Another 108 members joined in the Community Barbeque to welcome our new Members. Each new family has a unique reason for joining our temple. I’m glad that they found something special in Temple Sinai that made them want to become a part of our community. Whether you are new to Temple Sinai or a long time member, I hope you are involved and engaged in some part of our community.
Our Education Governing Board is looking for parents who are interested in improving our school and enhancing our children’s love of Judaism. The committee and Temple leadership will be creating an online survey designed to help us better understand what is working and what can be improved in the B’nai Mitzvah process. The real work will begin as they use the feedback to design and implement changes that make sense for our community. It is important to us that the children and their families feel there is a value in the process and at the end feel more connected to their Judaism. If you would like to be involved in this process, please contact Jason Marx at [email protected].
If you are beyond the religious school years, our
Caring Community Committee is re-forming. As a community in general, we have been wonderful at reaching out in times of need, but unfortunately, we occasionally fall short of filling the needs of all our members. Several members of our community have expressed an interest in organizing our efforts to ensure that no member silently slips away from the community as they deal with a loss or illness of a loved one. If you are willing to occasionally make a phone call, write notes, bake a casserole, or visit a congregant who is house or hospital bound, please contact Barak Malkin at [email protected] or call the temple office at 818-246-8101.
Are you interested in helping to make our services more meaningful or spiritually fulfilling? Then our Ritual Committee may be the place for you. The Rabbi and Cantor are always looking for ways to enrich the worship experience and they want to work with you to make sure the changes will speak to the community. Please come and try a meeting or two on for size. Everyone is welcome! Contact Roger Baar

Shalom! I hope you had a fabulous February
Might I just start by saying that the Temple Sinai of Glendale’s Sisterhood is amazing? There is so much support from the women in general but on top of that, there is much care and thought put into the actual training of a President. And it’s all so that we can become better leaders and pass this amazing knowledge and information on to our members.
I recently had the privilege to attend The Fried Leadership Conference in Austin, Texas. I was proud to represent TSG as your Sisterhood president. The last conference I attended was as an Area Director for the Women of Reform Judaism; going as your Sisterhood president made this experience uniquely different. I learned so much.
Rabbi David Wolfman taught two classes. One was Judaism 5.0 and the other was What is our WHY? I’ll be making a short presentation during our next board meeting on Tuesday, March 3 (our meetings run from 7-8:30 pm in the social hall, although the presentation will take just a few of those minutes...). I’ll do the presentation first and then the board will get back to regularly-scheduled business. I hope many of you in Sisterhood can make it. If you are not a member, and would like to be, please visit the temple’s website at:
www.Temple-Sinai.net. Once
the page opens you will see on the far right where it says “Forms.” Click on Forms and simply scroll down the page where you’ll see the Sisterhood Membership form; click on that and fill it out. It’s easy! (A much-appreciated shout-out to Barak Malkin, TSG’s Community Manager! Barak has done so much, along with the help of many other dedicated temple members, to finally bring our website into the 21st century!) If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
So much is happening in March! TSG is having their annual Purim Spiel and Megillah reading (Megillah on the Roof) on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 pm. We have scores of talented people who will amaze with song, dance and fun costumes (not to mention the delicious hamantaschen!) This popular event is always well-attended.
Friday March 13 is our Sisterhood Shabbat. It’s truly a spiritual and uplifting event, one not to be missed. I hope to see you all there.
On Tuesday March 24 the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys is hosting the 2015 Annual Women’s Forum: Honoring Women Who Make a Difference. Our very own Flo Cohen is being honored as one of these ladies. Flo has done so much for the temple and

Night of the Round Tableby Larry Moskowitz
So what transpired at Brotherhood’s February meeting? Let me put it this way --
Seven good men, an elegant mix,One had a birthday ... then there were six.Six could still do it, if they would but arrive,But one’s out of town ... so they number just five.Five stalwart brethren, getting down to their core,One had a class ... then there were four.“I’ve got spiel rehearsal,” said one absentee, Purim’s important ... so now they’re but three.Three’s not ideal, yet it could still do,Except one plain forgot ... now they are two. Two’s not a quorum, missing too many men,No worries, no cares ... they’ll meet on March ten.
As you’ve no doubt gleaned from the crude ditty above, the February 10 Brotherhood meeting was cancelled due to unavoidable prior commitments. Nevertheless, Brotherhood marches on.
The bowling party at Jewel City Bowl is confirmed for Sunday, March 15 at 1:30 pm. As the event will be partially subsidized by Brotherhood, the cost is only $12 for adults and $10 for children under 13. This buys you two hours of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, salad, soft drinks and fantastic company. Come to bowl, nosh, indulge in friendly competition, win bragging rights and show off your impressive bowling chops. Jewel City Bowl is located at 135 South Glendale Avenue, Glendale. All congregation members and families are welcome. You may pay at the door but please make reservations via the temple website “Forms” tab so we know how many to expect.
The Brotherhood scotch tasting event is confirmed for the evening of March 28 at the Lowe’s residence. So far the plan is to taste bottles from the 5 main regions plus at least one blend. We will have room for a maximum of 30 people. Please contact George and Stephanie Loew at [email protected] if you plan to attend. For more information about the actual
tasting, please contact Mark Fabulich at [email protected]. An email flyer with more details will be distributed to Brotherhood members shortly.
Brotherhood is busily preparing for Yom HaShoah. As always, we will distribute yellow commemoration candles for the entire congregation. And we will provide a guest speaker during the temple’s Yom HaShoah service and program on Sunday, April 12 at 10:00 am.
Please join us at our meeting on March 10 at 7:30 pm. Don’t make me write another poem.

BAR MITZVAH PROFILECHARLIE LAMBERT
By Joyce MoskowitzBar Mitzvah Date: March 28, 2015Torah Portion: Tzav, Leviticus 7:22-38Grade: 7th grade School: Roosevelt Middle School
Charlie becomes a bar mitzvah on Saturday, March 28, where he will lead the service, sharing teachings about the rules of sacrifice.
“It’s not only about the rules of sacrifice and how to treat animals,” Charlie says, “It’s also about dietary restrictions.” When we asked Charlie how he might relate his Torah portion to his life today, he mused, “People make sacrifices all the time.”
This seems to be a perfect segue into Charlie’s mitzvah project... animals, that is... not sacrifices. Charlie’s volunteering at the Sante D’or Foundation and Adoption Center in Los Angeles. [Sante D’or is an all donor-supported, no-kill animal rescue... whose goal focuses on the whole picture for the animals they nurture and the people whose lives they touch.] Here’s what Charlie had to say. “I’m volunteering at an animal shelter because I love animals and it ties in with my theme of T’zaar B’aalei Chayim, which means being concerned with the suffering of animals.” Charlie went on to tell The Scribe how any kind of volunteer work can help the animals in some way. “I’m collecting newspapers, towels, washcloths (to help with basic needs) and cat and dog toys for playtime. [Look for Charlie’s mitzvah box in the North hallway as you enter and please go through your closets for any old towels that would do the shelter more good than sitting in your cabinets collecting dust; it’s a win-win for everybody!].
Charlie’s fave subject in school? Science. “I like science because so many interesting things happen and I like finding out why they happen.” When not studying Hebrew, learning tropes or working on his mitzvah project, Charlie told us he enjoys playing sports, listening to music, and playing the flute and guitar. “I also like seeing movies and hanging with my friends,” he said. Remembering his very own furry friends, he added, “Plus I like spending time with my cat named Annie and my dog named Doug.”
The one person – out of anyone in the world, alive or dead, past or present – that Charlie wishes could attend his bar mitzvah is his grandfather Lionel. Charlie stated his reasons simply and beautifully... “Because I miss him. I would have liked him to present his tallit to me and to be with me for the l ’dor v’dor part of my bar mitzvah.” We wish the same, Charlie.
Charlie told The Scribe his favorite Jewish holiday is Passover. “I like Passover because it’s close to my birthday and every year we go to a friend’s house for the Seder!” Aside from really liking the Passover foods, Charlie admitted, “We don’t get to see these friends very often so that makes this day really special.” [Perhaps they’ll help make another upcoming day special...].
Please join us at The Scribe in congratulating Charlie and his mom, Ruth Lambert, on Charlie becoming a bar mitzvah. Mazel Tov!

In an unprecedented event in recent memory, 180 people attended this year’s Tu BiShvat seder. This
was a 50% increase over last year and we even had to open up the partition to the sanctuary to add
enough tables to meet the demand. Who knew?
The Tu BiShvat was organized by the Ritual Committee and due to the gracious donations of many
we were able to provide the whole meal, including dinner, all of the tasty fruits and nuts, plus dessert and we were able to finish the whole seder in only two hours!
We want to thank the Speils, Lois Lovi, Tina and Marc Lowenthal, Debby Blake, the parents of the third grade class, Eddy and Emily Payne, Preston and Pilar Oppenheimer, Maggie Freed and Roger Baar for their donations.
We also want to thank the third grade class for doing many of the readings, the members of the Ritual Committee, the Campership kids
and their parents, Peggy Nichols, Michelle and Barak Malkin, Jacob Baar, Rabbi and Cantor for assisting in
putting on the seder. All of you helped make this one of the most successful events we’ve ever had.
We also introduced Visual T’filah which allows us to show slides with text and
images instead of having to read from papers at our table. It was especially helpful when we were singing songs. We will be using Visual T’filah more during other services held in the social hall.
Journey Through the Bible - David & Goliath - Redux
In what is arguably one of the well known stories in the Bible, we read and discussed the story of David
and Goliath. In addition to all of the palace intrigue, who will be king, who won’t be king and why we learned about the diminutive David overcoming the giant Goliath with the toss of the sling and then Israel triumphing over the Philistines. It is a classic story of the underdog overcoming great odds to be victorious. What an inspiration this story has been for centuries, millenia. It also helps lay the groundwork for the humble David to become king.
But, did David really kill Goliath? As the twenty people present discovered, one has to read I Samuel to note that there are two stories of the killing of Goliath and David only figures as the killer in one of them. What to make of this? That is why it is exciting to come to the monthly Journey Through the Bible class open to everyone. You do not have to have attended the previous classes to come. Each class stands on its own.
This upcoming class will explore the dramatic intrigue with David, still not king, as part of King Saul’s family. How will it turn out? Who lives and who dies? Come join us for Rabbi Rick’s next Journey Through the Bible session which meets Sunday, March 15 at 10:00 am. It promises to be an fascinating hour and a half as we explore more of this original, biblical “Game of Thrones.”

What's Nu - and More!Act As If You Already Are The
Person You Want To BeBy Barak Malkin - Community Manager
March is the month when we celebrate Purim. It’s a holiday filled with people pretending and
acting and where the lines of certainty and sureness are blurred. But, like all Jewish holidays there is something for us to learn. So what is a lesson from people being deceptive?
When I was living in New Jersey, working as an accountant, I attended a workshop teaching… something about working in a corporate environment. I honestly don’t remember. What I do remember about the workshop is a specific phrase: “Act as if you already are the person you want to be.” They were talking about using this in the sense of becoming a manager or working your way up the ladder. But I repeated it to myself and it took on a sort of rhythm. Act is if you already are the person you want to be. I have taken this phrase and applied it as one of my many favorite mantras to help me live a happier and better life.
It’s a great phrase. Imagine that you are already the person that you hope you are when you close your eyes. What’s holding you back? How can you achieve something that seems so difficult? Why is it that other people can do what you only hope to? The answer is action. The act of putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation or an unsure scenario. After I heard this phrase, I started applying it to many, if not all, of the times in my life when I get nervous or afraid or uncertain. If I’m meeting groups of new people, I act as if I’m a social butterfly, easily fitting into the conversation. If I’m afraid of public speaking, I act as if I’m a professional speaker, someone who’s spoken to large groups many times and has been received very well. If I’m afraid of riding a roller coaster, I act as if I’m the adventurous type or one of the brave young children standing in line in front of me who’s back, waiting to ride for the tenth time.
On Purim we pretend. We act and we deceive and we blur the lines of who people are. I think that’s okay. We’re not a one-personality character. We all have many things about us that are great, but we hold
back or hide or perhaps don’t know that those parts of us exist. Sometimes, pretending and acting is the only way to discover who we can really be.
Over the past few years, I’ve been able to do many things that I have previously been unable to. Being more social and speaking to large groups has become more comfortable. I don’t get as nervous anymore. Acting in those situations became normalcy. I don’t have to act anymore because I am now more of the person that I was hoping to be.
I often relish the idea of the fictional character, Don Quixote. He spends his days pretending to be the bravest and noblest knight, not afraid of anything. He dreams the impossible dreams and reaches for the unreachable star. He lives his life being the person he hopes to be.
Act as if you already are the person you want to be and eventually, you will be.
Sisterhood Sunday Morning Coffee Gathering
While their children were in Religious School one Sunday, Sisterhood hosted a coffee gathering
at Flo Cohen’s house to help the new moms and some of the not so new moms get together to enjoy each other’s company. Sixteen women attended. They chatted had some coffee and food (what else?) and got to know each other better. They shared stories and notes to make sure that their children didn’t get the upper hand. A wonderful time was had by all and they plan on doing it again, so keep an eye out for the next one so you can find out the secrets of our children.

Sisterhood Shabbat Service“And all the skilled women spun with their own hands” -on Friday, March 13 we will read these words from Vayak’heil during a very special Sisterhood Shabbat service. This is one of the Torah portions describing the donations for the Tabernacle and features the contributions of the women. In ancient Israel, the women were skilled in many things, midwives, musicians and most importantly for this parashah in making textiles, cloths and hangings. After the service, which has been specially written for this Shabbat, there will be
an exhibit of crafts and art work with a Jewish theme that have been made by women in our Sisterhood.
If you are a woman member of Sisterhood (we do have some men who are members) and have made quilts or tallitot, paintings or paper cuttings among other arts and crafts that in some way reflect a Jewish theme and would like to be part of this exhibit, please contact Ilena Blicker at [email protected]. Please send a photo of what you
will exhibit and approximate size so that we can plan on how to display it.

My Promised Land:The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel
byAri Shavit
Israeli journalist, Ari Shavit, has written a deep and enriching and at times wrenching history of Zionism & Israel since his grandfather emigrated in the late 1890’s. The political, cultural and personal tale of this land are richly presented in detail including those that are at times difficult to face. His views on how Israel’s past will influence its future, its government and the two peoples who inhabit it are frank and visionary. Whether you agree with all or part of this book, it is enlightening and fascinating.
