Erica Wolfe Mitzvah Day 2015 More than 160 Temple Emanuel members participated in over 12 community nonprofit projects. We involved religious school children, BBYO members and offered a bone marrow donor registry as part of Mitzvah Day! It was a wonderful community effort by our Temple, especially the Mitzvah Day committee and all the project captains. Thank you to this leadership group for their time and efforts. We volunteered at the following organizations: ABC of NC, Brotherhood Brunch, Crisis Control Ministry, El Buen Pastor Latino Community, Forsyth Humane Society, H.O.P.E. of WS, Hospice & Palliative Care, Moore Food Pantry, Sunnyside Ministry, Second Harvest Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, SECU Family House, and The Shalom Project.

BOARD BRIEFS

The following actions were taken by the Board of Governors during the January and February meetings: New Members: The Board approved a recommendation from the Membership Committee to elect for membership in the Temple and to welcome Ellie and Stuart Fine. Finance: The Board approved the proposal for bank statements that any and all groups that use the Temple’s name and/or the Temple’s federal tax ID number on their bank accounts shall include the Temple’s VP of Finance as a signatory on the account and arrange for a duplicate copy of the bank statement to be sent to the Temple office or be accessible online. Preschool Playground: The Board approved the recommendation of the House Committee to authorize payment to Larmore Landscape Associates for preschool playground renovation to include installing a French drain and resurfacing in preparation for playground equipment installation.

Relational Judaism, Part One

You have heard me, and to a much greater extent, Rabbi Mark, speak about relationships and their importance to the long-term sustainability of the Temple. In his book, Relational Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community, Dr. Ron Wolfson makes the point that long-term sustainability is not about Temple programming, but it is rather about relationships. When we care about one another, we become more engaged.

I saw this simple, but profound idea play out recently at the funeral for Hannah Brooks, someone that neither I, nor any other Temple member at the funeral had met. How then was this an example of Relational Judaism? It was for at least two reasons. First, Hannah’s history was similar to many of ours, so we related to her. She was born in Brooklyn in 1922, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, to a religious family. Like so many of our parents, she worked hard to make a better life for herself and her children. Eventually her children, like so many of us, moved away to make their own lives.

Although I had never met her, I certainly could relate to her. Second, and most significantly, each of us had responded to a simple request from Rabbi Mark to do a mitzvah and attend the funeral of a Jewish woman we had never met. We attended from our shared sense of history, a shared sense of responsibility, and a shared sense of community. We responded because we knew Temple members would attend and we did not want them or Rabbi Mark to be alone. As I looked around that cold, windy day, as sad as I was for Hannah’s family, I was heartened by our community’s response. We felt connected with one another – a true sense of community as deep as any of us had felt. It is these relationships that will ultimately sustain our Temple and our local Jewish community.

Relational Judaism, Part Two It was a beautiful day. The weather, the people, the efforts, the spirit, the energy, the food. It was all very beautiful. And it was “one of those moments” which we ought to remember. I am talking about the Erica Wolfe (z”l) Mitzvah Day on February 8. Why did that day “hum” so beautifully? Because we worked together. We brought a myriad of voices and people together. Members from throughout the temple family came together – from all parts of our community. And I am so grateful. I am grateful to all the participants, the Brotherhood (for brunch), the Team Captains, the Committee as a whole and its chair (Wendy Brenner), the sites that allowed us to come and do a touch of mitzvah-work, to Rochelle, Stephen (z”l), and Jennifer Wolfe who help us remember their beloved Erica and do the work of blessing in her memory.

We have those moments, thank God, with some regularity at our temple. And the last couple of weeks, as I write this in mid-February, have brought a few of those ‘moments’. Mitzvah Day, the Rick Recht Havdalah Concert and the Tu BiShvat Seder during Shabbat were all ‘moments’. As I search for a thread of commonality or a theme, I am struck by how these events and moments were all ‘experiential’. We experienced, lived, celebrated Judaism, heritage, community, and compassion. We brought ourselves, as individuals, to make something communal – both internally and externally. This is “relational Judaism.” Hadassah sponsored the Tu BiShvat Seder. Many people brought friends to the Rick Recht Concert. People signed up for Mitzvah Day projects because of personal connections to the organizations or the other individuals going to those sites. We relate to Judaism and to our community because of common connections or the search to create and/or deepen them. The Spring will present many such opportunities – from Purim festivities to a night of learning on Shavuot, from our visiting comedian, Dan Ahdoot, May 2, to the musical ensemble, Nava Tehila, from Jerusalem on Shabbat May 15/16. We celebrate so many ‘moments’ as a community. May we do so with joy and gratitude, embracing the opportunities for learning and soul expansion.

Earlier this month, I enjoyed celebrating the holiday of Tu B’Shevat (the “new year” or “birthday” of the trees) with our Hebrew School students. I was impressed on two counts: 1. Their enthusiastic consumption of the dried fruit I provided as a snack – hooray for kids eating healthy food! 2. Their reaction to the following story, which was our text study for the day:

One day, Honi the Circle Maker was walking on the road and saw a man planting a carob

tree.

Honi asked the man, “How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?”

The man replied, “Seventy years.” Honi then asked the man, “And do you think you will live another seventy years and eat the fruit of this

tree?”

The man answered, “Perhaps not. However, when I was born into this world, I found many carob trees

planted by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted trees for me, I am planting trees for my chil-

dren and grandchildren so they will be able to eat the fruit of these trees.”

Inspired by the tale of Honi the Circle Maker, the kids brainstormed a list of everything they would want to leave in the world for future generations, including: healthy trees, clean air and water, farms that treat the earth and animals with respect, enough food for everyone, good schools, no bullying, beautiful parks, and an earth that isn’t completely overtaken by landfills. It struck me that these students in Grades 3-6 have a pretty good idea of what challenges the world is facing thanks to adults who have made a whole lot of messes. I sometimes feel discouraged by the reality that our kids are going to inherit these messes; it is simply too late for us to clean things up before the kids grow into adulthood. The best we can do is to work side by side with them on the huge problems of pollution, hunger, homelessness, cruelty to people and animals, and destruction of natural resources. Fortunately, I have a job that allows me to do this. A few weeks ago, I experienced my very first Mitzvah Day at Temple Emanuel. Many of the Religious School students and BBYO teens volunteered, some of them at my own project site: The Shalom Project clothes closet at Green Street Methodist Church. I hope that when the kids saw their parents and me sorting and hanging donated clothes, they knew that the adults in their lives don’t just want them to study old stories from the Talmud; we want to help them put the lessons of those stories into action. For my part, I learned a lesson from our kids about the joy and rewards of service. As I dug through that seemingly endless bin of donated clothing, I was pleased to be helping out but also tired from a busy week of programming and a little bit frustrated at being in the basement of a church instead of outside enjoying the unseasonably beautiful weather. (I mean seriously, it was 70 degrees and sunny in February!) While I resigned myself to this fate, the second graders at our site begged and pleaded to be allowed to… scrub the floor. I’m not making this up or exaggerating; they wanted to get to work at a real job, and the floor was dirty. This was amazing to me, and I have done a considerable amount of service work in organizations ranging from soup kitchens to animal shelters. When I lived in Washington, D.C. I volunteered at the National Zoo and con-tentedly cleaned farmyards when it was required. I’m ready and willing to take on any job that comes my way, but it would never have occurred to me to take the initiative of asking if I could please wash someone else’s floor. Those second graders raised the bar for me; their enthusiasm and motivation exceeded my own and that of most adults. I hope that our kids are able to hang onto this enthusiasm as they grow up and continue to tackle the problems and challenges in our world. It can be tough to keep working and moving forward when these problems are so big that they sometimes feel insurmountable – but if our kids can manage it, they have a real chance of leaving the world a better, cleaner, kinder place for future generations.

THE MAVENS (SENIOR PROGRAMMING)

Join the Mavens "Lunch and Learn" events at noon on the second Thursday of each month for those 55 years or older. The Mavens are excited about the plans for the next few months. March 12 -- Gail Bretan, Director of Jewish Life at Wake Forest University, will be our guest speaker. Her topic is “Biblical Stress Management.” April 9 -- Kathryn Levy, Principal Flutist of the Winston Salem Symphony and an instructor in the music department of Wake Forest University, is collaborating with several of her musician friends to prepare a musical program that all will enjoy. May 14 --We will travel to Greensboro for a tour of The American Hebrew Academy. Ted Sulzberg is coordinating this event. He promises it will be both interesting and enjoyable. June 11 - Our guest will be an Ambassador from the Road Scholar programs who will present and describe the offerings of the many trips they coordinate. July 16 --We will board The Catawba Queen and spend time cruising Lake Norman. Details coming soon.

Our newest offering is chair yoga class which starts at 11 a.m. prior to our monthly lunch and program held at the Temple. Yoga for seniors enables us to pay attention to our breathing and posture while we address our other aches and pains.

PRESCHOOL UPDATES It is always amazing how quickly the

winter and spring holidays come! We celebrated Tu BiShvat, including a

wonderful seder with Rabbi Mark. The

children planted parsley as part of the

celebration, in order to have plants big

enough to send home for Passover!

Now, we are getting ready for

Purim, and after that Passover – it is

our busiest, and most fun time of the

year.

Social Action Committee (SAC) is engaged in a number of initiatives toward Tikkun Olam, making the world a better place. We work diligently at being inclusive! All Temple members are invited to participate in an area of your interest. SAC is co-chaired by Norma-May Isakow and Joyce Shapiro, bringing their passion and experience as leaders. There are 400 - 500 homeless people in Winston-Salem. They are our neighbors. Tonight, that means that they are hungry and very, very cold. Temple Emanuel has a long history of hands-on community support. A large network of groups in Winston-Salem has joined together and strengthened efforts in recent years to create a broad and well-managed program to support the local homeless population. Volunteer opportunities are available through March 31 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church to help our neighbors without homes. Your support makes a difference in our community. BROTHERHOOD

Brotherhood members got an early start on Mitzvah Day by preparing brunch for over 160 volunteers. We sliced and diced and mixed and plated enough food to feed our volunteer army, as well as for Hospice. Many thanks go out to all who helped. Kitchen nightmares were kept to a minimum!

We will be hosting a post-Megillah Madness Poker Night at the home of Richard Brenner on Wednesday, March 4, at 8 p.m.. Dr. Zohara Boyd and Dr. Peter Petschauer were both children in Europe during World War II, and their experiences were worlds apart. Now their cooperation and friendship serves as an inspiring example. Petschauer and Boyd met as

academic colleagues at Appalachian State University, where Boyd is co-director of the Center for Judaic, Holo-caust and Peace Studies. They now use their friendship and interaction with peopleto share their experiences of one of history's most devastating storms, telling their stories and the lessons they've learned.

BBYO returned from Winter Cultural convention with best costume award and as basketball champions! We were grateful to be included in Mitzvah Day - this was a wonderful community service experience for us.

Upcoming: Annual BBYO Purim Carnival on March 1, with the bouncy castle, games, lunch and more!

We will also host a "Welcome Program" for eighth graders, details coming.

BBYO Spring Council will be held at Camp Weaver, Greensboro, with over 200 high school students from the region. Aaron Cooper, our AZA president, is co-coordinator this year.

A group of teen boys from the Temple wanted to play in a basketball league. They found a church league with teams from St. Paul's Episcopal, Calvary Baptist, Knoll-wood Baptist, First Presbyterian, the Greek Orthodox Church and others. Coach Joanne Floch volunteered to lead the team with assistant coach Paul Grosswald. The boys had a great time bonding with each other and their peers on other teams. It was a great experience.

Emma Jordyn Cronan will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, April 25, 2015. She is the daughter of Chris and Stephanie Cronan and older sister to Sophie and Tyler. Emma is a seventh grade honor student at Summit School. She began dancing at 4 years old at In Motion Dance Center and currently takes ballet, pointe, jazz, hip hop, modern and pilates. Emma loves to help her school and community by volunteering her time. She has participated in several 5k run/walks including the Hospice Hope Run and the CROP Hunger Walk. During the summer, Emma swims for the Sherwood Sharks and attends Camp Poyntelle Lewis Village in Pennsylvania. In her free time she enjoys art, music and spending time with family and friends.

Allie has been a member of Temple Emanuel since her family moved to Winston-Salem in 2004, attending the pre-school and then continuing on to religious school. She is a 7th grader at Meadowlark Middle School.

Her family is incredibly proud of her accomplishments leading up to this day. She is a member of the robotics team at Meadowlark and was a participant in the state competition in January. She is a Crosby Scholar and a Duke TIP. She has been active in Girl Scouts

since kindergarten and has earned her Bronze award and is working towards her Silver award. She has been very active in the Children’s Theatre of Winston-Salem, appearing in the The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and the Jungle Book. In her spare time, she loves to spend time with family and beloved cats. She also enjoys ice-skating, swimming and learning more about game design.

Allie and her family would like to thank Rabbi Mark Strauss-Cohn, Mike Backfield, Courtney Anthony and all of her religious school teachers for helping her prepare for this special day. She is excited to share this day with her friends, family and the Temple Emanuel congregation that have come from far and wide to support her and celebrate her accomplishments.
