Vacation Bible School –
Cave Quest!
It’s that time of year again! Hope Lu-
theran Church will be hosting Vaca-
tion Bible School beginning Monday, July 4th until Fri-
day, July 8th! The camp will be run from 9am until
12noon with the theme: Cave Quest – Following Je-
sus, the Light of the World! With 75 children regis-
tered and a hopeful weather forecast, we are looking
forward to a fun-filled week of spreading the good
news of Jesus!
A BIG thank-you to those volunteers who have
stepped up to help out with this year’s VBS. This min-
istry could not take place without you! Thank you for
your servant hearts that you show through this minis-
try.
Please keep us in your prayers – that Jesus would
work mightily through the willing hands of the volun-
teers and in the hearts of those children who attend,
and that the impact of this week’s high energy minis-
try would be long-lasting and life-changing.

A Note From the New Times of Hope
Editor
I am pleased to be taking on the role as editor
of the Times of Hope. This monthly newsletter
is an important and fun tool we use to communi-
cate between the church and school to keep
everyone informed.
I would like to again thank Mai and Martin
Pedersen for having taken on the task as co-
editors for the last eight years. What a tremen-
dous giving of time and talents!
I hope to bring some new ideas and a fresh look
to the Times of Hope in future issues. Watch
for the “Youth Reporter” section, “Where Are
They Now?”, and other new featured articles.
Please note that the Times of Hope is also
available by email. If you would prefer a soft
copy, please let me know and I will put you on
the email distribution list. If you have ideas or
would like to contribute to the newsletter, please
feel free get in touch with me.

Sunday School News
18 kids attended our last Sunday School ses-sion before summer break on May 29th. The kids had collected offerings for the year of over $300 so we had a little fun talking about money in a Price is Right game and the kids learned that Heaven is priceless. We also played some relay matching races reviewing the bible stories.
Please pray that our Sunday school would grow to serve more than our immediate congregation and that the kids would learn to trust God every step of their lives. A planning meeting is tenta-tivly scheduled for July 17th to discuss objec-tives and goals for the fall. Ask yourself, is God calling you to serve with our Sunday school team? Whether you are a parent, grandparent, teen, or just love kids, we'd love to hear your
ideas for Sunday School.

Pub Night Report
On Tuesday, June 7, some 40 people from
Hope gathered with Pastor Laverne at the Cat &
Fiddle Pub to hear his “Ten Reasons Why Hope
Lutheran Church Will Not Celebrate it’s 75th An-
niversary in 2030” – those reasons are listed
below. After that 20 minute explanation, partici-
pants discussed those ten reasons around the
various tables. Then each table offered a com-
ment or two from their discussion. Pastor
Laverne closed the evening with a final compel-
ling reason why Hope WILL be here in 2030 –
Jesus is the Lord of the Church!
(continued on page 3)
Thank you to the generous disciples of Jesus in Hope's rescue ship! On Sunday, June 12 the FaithLife Chapter received $1300 from your freewill offerings at the soup and bun lunch, as well as from the Meridian Meats fundraiser. These funds, along with a $500 matching grant from FaithLife Financial, will be sent to CLWR, for a total of $1800.
How will these funds be used? CLWR says, "We are working with the LCC District Presi-dent and ELCIC Synod Bishop who are in conversation with their congregations in Fort McMurray. So far, people are still discerning needs. We have approved about $60,000 for Camp Kuraikos at Sylvan Lake to provide a special camping experience for youth referred by the Ft. McMurray churches. The camp will include activities designed to help youth cope with natural disaster trauma. There are other applications currently under consideration in-cluding site cleanup, counseling services, etc. We will send out a more complete report when more activities have been approved."

(continued from page 2)
There was a positive response to the whole
evening, some even suggesting that we need to
do something like that regularly. Notes were
taken during the large group feedback session,
and those suggestions will be brought to the
Board of Governance for further discussion.
Why Hope Lutheran won't celebrate it's
75th Anniversary (in random order)
1. People at Hope are not having babies - 1 or 2
infant Baptisms a year - soon
no Sunday School program, no attraction for
prospective parents. (Missing that demographic
of couples in their late 20's and early 30's.)
2. In 12 years the lack of babies now will trans-
late to no youth group then.
3. In 14 years, our seniors will all have graduat-
ed to heaven, and they are regular givers and
the institutional history and backbone of Hope.
4. There is no church worker program at Con-
cordia to provide a second worker.
5. It is too costly to live here - no pastor can af-
ford to accept a call.
6. The ABC District fall-out will have lasting re-
percussions and people will leave the church for
various reasons - not all good (theological)
ones.
LCC will struggle to maintain and there will be
no church body to belong to.
Other lower mainland LCC congregations are
dying. (status)
7. The world is becoming more evil and anti-
Christian. The church is getting a bad reputa-
tion. The world is rejecting Christianity - morals
and teachings.
8. Young adults are quitting church - no future
leaders.
9. Building is getting older, will need costly re-
pairs in the next decade. Shrinking congrega-
tion and support base may make repairs impos-
sible.
10. Old pastor like me becomes an irrelevant
dinosaur who the current generation doesn't
connect with.

The Galliazzo Family
For those of you who remember us, I (Michelle) was a DPS at Hope from 2005-2010. During that time, I met my husband Jon, got married, had our first baby Maida, then moved to Victoria for Jon's work. While in Victoria we had our second baby Alice, moved twice, starting attending Hope Victoria, and enjoyed being back on the Island. Fast fwd two years and we were offered the same job in Nanaimo. Moved again (twice!), bought our first home, and had our third baby Dante.
Things have been going really well for us in Nanai-mo. Jon loves his team at Shaw Nanaimo, our neigh-bourhood, Maida's school (yes, we have a kindergar-tener!), and being much closer to our families. We are attending Nanaimo Alliance Church (we church shopped for quite a while, trying to find the right fit for our family). I am helping out with Jr.youth and worship, and Jon is involved in the church's Alpha Ministry. Jon continues to hunt, and now rides a mo-torcycle to work! I finally got my license two years ago, and am enjoying the freedom. I started running in the spring, and have really been amazed by the extra energy i have. I also have a daycare kid two days a week. Maida will be in gr.1 this fall, and Alice will be in kindergarten (we are only a 6 min. walk from the school). Dante is 2 and a half and as crazy as ever.
We often think of you all at Hope and recall our time fondly as it was extremely formative for our new fam-ily. Gods richest blessings to each and everyone of you.
Jon, Michelle, Maida, Alice and Dante Galliazzo
Introducing the new “Youth Reporter” feature column in the Times of Hope, where youth can share their stories about their meetings, retreats and other Christian experiences.
What Goes on at Those Youth Meetings Anyways?
On a typical Saturday night, from 6:30 - 8:15pm, you will usually find about 10 crazy teenagers from grades 7-12 running around the church. Youth group is a lot of fun, and I’m going to explain a little on what we do on a usual Saturday night. Each event is dif-ferent, and this year we have done lots of stuff from gym games, to nerf wars, to capture the flag, to bible studies, to even ice skating and swimming. At 6:30 every Saturday we come to the church, and there is usually an average of 10-15 people. At really popular events we can get up to 20-25. We do the event for that night for a little more than an hour. After we are done playing and messing around, we all go into the chapel for devotions. It’s mainly Stephanie who leads the devotions, but this year some of the older youth have been writing their own devotions and leading it themselves. At about 8:00 we all go to the gym and buy concession, where you can get pop, chips, and candy for super cheap prices! Concession is a great time to talk to friends, play gym games, and just mess around. Everyone goes home at about 8:15. In conclusion, youth group is a great place to catch up with friends, hang out, learn more about God, and have fun on a Saturday night.

Board of Governance Elections
The Voters of Hope Lutheran Church met on Sun-
day, June 12 and one of the most significant items of
business was to elect the first Board of Governance
under our new leadership model. Seven candidates
who were nominated and who went through the
training sessions allowed their names to stand. From
those seven, these five people were elected: Ste-
phen Horton, Doug Niblock, Tina Pettie, Emily Reilly,
and Carl Schmidt. Along with them, Pastor Laverne
Hautz and Principal Susan Eisner (by virtue of this
offices) will form the Board of Governance. We are
grateful to God for their willingness to serve Him and
His church as we make this governance change.
Please hold them all in your prayers in the weeks
and months to come, and offer them your words of
support and your willingness to work with them to
see God’s kingdom both come and grow in this
place.
Team Leaders
Under that new governance model, several Team
Leaders have already stepped forward and others
are still considering their involvement. The Team
Leaders met with Pastor Laverne this past week to
learn more about their roles and about our vision and
mission as a church. Please keep these people in
your prayers, too:
Communication Team Leader – Leah Wilson
Facilities Team Leader – Christ Breau
Mission Team Leader – John Diack
Small Group Team Leader – Linda Schiefke
(considering)
Children’s Ministry Team Leader – Shelley Frick
(considering)
Youth Ministry Team Leader – Brenda Horton
Sunday Team Leader – Christine Intile (considering)
Financial Team Leader – Lance Bowerbank
Celebration Team Leader – Jean Gettle
(considering)
Spiritual Care Team Leader – Simon Verboom
(considering)
We are thrilled that many people at Hope have al-
ready indicated an interest in working together on
these teams to provide a Christ-centered ministry
through our church. If you are interested in learning
more about one of these teams or in signing up for
one of these teams, you can contact the appropriate
Team Leader or Pastor Laverne to express that in-
terest. Together, we want to impact the people of our
community with the person and the saving work of
Jesus, our Saviour.
Food Bank Fund
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” Matthew
25:35 Thanks to the supply of some potatoes from another source to the SHARE Food Bank in Port Moody, we could delay our June
deliveries by one week to June 13th and June 27th. Still, we are $54 short for to-morrow’s delivery worth $256. As of June 24th our Fund balance stands at $202. Again we hope and pray that today’s (June 26) contribu-tions will cover at least this short fall and our regular sup-ply of fresh potatoes may continue uninterrupted. Funds permitting, we expect July deliveries to take place on the 11th and 25th of the month. Here the figures for the past 3 months: Contributions Deliveries April $695 $512 May $375 $512 June (to June 25th) $270 $256 Total deliveries for the year (to June 25th) amount to 17,600 lbs. of potatoes plus 1,328 lbs. of non-perishable food items from the Narthex. As we contemplate our budgets for July and August - with holyday plans and the many appeals for financial support – let us not forget our ongoing (since 2011) provision of an important fresh food item on the tables of needy fami-lies in our neighbourhood. Please feel free to help yourself to the special food bank envelopes located in the bottom right hand corner of the mail boxes in the Narthex. “Jesus said, ’the King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, what-ever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Matt.25:40 Yours gratefully, Claus Schultz
