    Acting Captain's Log, Stardate 104752.14.

    Lieutenant Kyle Troi Riker speaking.

Today, I have the sad solemn duty to log that, despite Lt. Waldeck a nd the away team's b estefforts, we've lost two shipmates. I don't take their losses lightly, even if we were in a bettersituation. Crewman Vor Ran and Cadet Thelev se rved Captain th'Ressa and myself withdistinction, courage, honor and p rofessionalism beyond t heir call of duty a nd b eyond anythingthat it is e xpected from a Stareet officer. It is, in my p ersonal and professional opinion, that theydeserve a Stareet Award of Valor. Their names w ill forever be linked with our story a ndthe Quasar 's.

After the away team arrived from the Sphere, I ordered Mr. Harm'Agar to t ake u s o ut of theanomaly zo ne. Fortunately, the S phere's implosion was h armless, and we were c lear of any

explosion that may h ad o ccurred.

Mr. Dae detected in our long-range sensors a nearby star system that included three planets, one inhabitable, and one mysterious u nknown object. The system's st ar is u nstable, releasingpowerful and probably d angerous solar pulses e very si x h ours, according to Mr. Harm'Agarcalculations. His ability with scientic matters is becoming quite useful since the loss of our chiefscience o fficer.

Even with the pressing m atter of we r eturning home, a journey of more t han one h undred yearsat maximum warp in o ur current ship, I ordered Mr. Harm'Agar to a pproach t he u nknown o bject. It was revealed as a ship, a massive and extremely o ld ship, but we were not alone.

We h ave been greeted by u nknown a liens in e normous sal vage ve ssels. They identiedthemselves a s t he I'Lanea, threatening anyone who challenged their claim over the ship. Afterhearing advice from my b ridge officers a nd Mr. Resik, I decided to offer help, in e xchange from asmall part of their claim. That small part was a ctually a n unknown form of energy, probablypropulsion, detected by Dae. With low readings even Waldeck c ouldn't conrm that it wasactually a warp engine, but before we had a chance, the I'Lanea were pursuing us, claimingthe Quasar 's cr ew as t heir new slaves.

A subwarp chase followed, with them breaking pursuit after t hey p ushed us out of the system. Atthat point, I made a c hoice to t ry to understand m ore a bout that propulsion system. Waldeck a ndMr. Zur-ick, the Tactical officer, dissuaded me from a more blunt approach. However, Harm'Agarproposed that we've launched a probe towards t he ship. With Waldeck's t echnical modicationsin m aking the p robe sm aller, with lesser emissions an d m ore m aneuverable, Harm'Agar could yremotely the probe inside the massive ship, which would gave us a better un derstanding abouthow it worked.

However, this d ecision wasn't an easy one: there is t he risk of the I'Lanea ships d etecting the

probe and interpreting it as a sign of aggression or attempt theft. Their weapon systems a ndwarp drives, even if they a re jury-rigged, are better than ours. But it is of my belief that, even

with the risk, we should take it, because we have a long journey home and every o pportunityshould b e e xplored.

We will launch the probe minutes b efore a solar pulse, to m ask i ts a pproach from the I'Lanea'ssensors. I just hope that Harm'Agar's a nd Waldeck's sk ills d o pay off.

    Riker out.

Supplemental: This r st uncharted system that we've explored with myself as t he Quasar 's

captain will be called Thelev, and its h abitable planet Vor Ran, in honor of our dead comrades.
