Topic – Adverbs and Kinds of Adverbs

1. DEFINITION
An adverb is a word that describes or adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, another adverb or a whole sentence. Adverbs tell us how a thing is done, when it is done or where it is done.
Examples: sweetly, everywhere, bravely, today, now etc.
An adverb describes:
A VERB
The nightingale sings sweetly.
AN ADJECTIVE
He drives very fast.
AN ADVERB
The race finished too quickly.
A WHOLE SENTENCE
Hopefully, we will win the match.
2. KINDS OF ADVERBS
(a) Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner describe how something happens or how an action is done.
Examples: carelessly, sweetly, sadly, etc
Sentence: a) Soldiers fought bravely.
b) The children sang the songs merrily.
(b) Adverbs of Place
Adverbs of place tell us where something happens or where an action is done.
Examples: here, there, near, everywhere, upstairs, etc
Sentences: (a) I looked everywhere for my book.
(b) The kids are going upstairs.
(c) Adverbs of Time
Adverbs of time tell us when an action is done or when things
happen. Examples: today, before, yesterday, immediately, soon etc
Sentences: (a) He woke up early today.
(b) I will see you soon.
(d) Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of frequency tell us how frequently something happens or how often an action is done.
Examples: rarely, once, frequently, often, regularly etc.
Sentences: (a) We often visit our grandparent’s house.
(b) I frequently visit my favourite restaurant.
(e) Adverbs of Degree
Adverbs of degree tell us about the intensity of something.
An adverb of degree shows how much or to what extent a thing is done.
Examples: very, quite, too, fairly, extremely, really etc
Sentences: (a) He is quite strong.
(b) She works too hard.
(f) Interrogative Adverbs
Interrogative Adverbs are used to ask questions. Interrogative adverbs why, where, how, & when are placed at the beginning of a question.
Examples: Where do you live?
Why are you crying?
