Adverbs of Manner are used to say more about verbs.

• Alice ate her hamburger quickly.• Peter rides his bike carefully.• My grandfather drives his car slowly.• Andrea sings beautifully.• The boy smiled happily.

With adverbs of manner you say how people do things.

• Alice ate her hamburger quickly.• How did Alice eat her hamburger?• Quickly!

• Peter rides his bike carefully.• How does Peter ride his bike?• Carefully!

Form

• Adverbs of manner are often formed from adjectives by adding ‘ly‘ to the end of the adjective.

Special Forms

• If an adjective ends in ‘y‘, you need to change the ‘y‘ to an ‘i‘ before adding ‘ly‘.
