Whilst most changes are minor, the girls summer uniform is completely different with it predominately being blue. Other updates with the uniform will be warmer rugby tops, a soft-shell jacket (replacing the old spray jacket), slight amendments to the kilt and a minor design change with the polo tops. We believe these changes will support the students to be more comfortable at school. We have long been frustrated that the uniform was not warm enough in winter and these updates will help to address this. As with any uniform changes there is a 3 year uptake period, so the old uniform is still suitable for any current students until 2021. Samples of the new uniform will be on display in the coming weeks. Please don't hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions. Indonesian Trip Welcome back to Mrs Annette Sugiyanto, Mrs Nicola Maher, Mr Josh Baker and the 26 students that have been away for the last 12 days in Yogyakarta. It is great to hear that the group are back in Geelong and have had a wonderful trip experiencing the Indonesian culture and warmer climate associated with this region. Intentions for 2019 If students are not returning to Oberon High School in 2019, can families please contact the school and speak with one of the Assistant Principals in regards to this. RUOK Day As part of the Student and Staff Wellbeing Program at the school, members of the school community ran a number of activities on Friday 14 th October. Mental health and wellbeing of our school community members is essential to ensure that our students are able to achieve their potential in all aspects of their schooling. Mock Interviews On Tuesday 18 th September, our Year 9 students had the opportunity to undertake Career mock interviews with Deakin University Education students. Speaking with a number of students involved, they found the interviews a great learning experience. As part of the preparation prior to the interviews, students had developed resumes in their English classes. Thank you to Mrs Kaye Barry who organised the day. Year 12 Celebration Day A reminder to Parents/Guardians of our Year 12 students that the Celebration Day and Final Assembly will be held on Tuesday 23 rd October. The Assembly will begin at approximately 10.40am and parents are encouraged to join us for some lunch afterwards. I encourage you to put this date into your calendar. As this is the last Newsletter for the Term, I wish everyone a safe Term break and look forward to seeing all students returning in Term 4 Tim McMahon Staff Retirement After a long association with the school highly respected teacher Sharon Jimmink-Scott has indicated that she will be retiring, with Friday 21 st September being her last day at school. Sharon has worked at Oberon since January 2005 and as well as teaching English, Humanities, VCAL and Japanese she has also held a number of leadership positions including Year Level Manager and Literacy Coach. I would like to thank Sharon for her service to State School education and her contribution to Oberon High School. Sharon throughout her career has had a great rapport with students allowing her to have a positive impact on not only their education but also their personal wellbeing. On behalf of the school community I wish Sharon well in retirement. Interim Reports All Students/Parents should have been able to access the Interim Reports on the School Portal from Thursday 20 th September. Parents and students will have the opportunity to further discuss their academic progress at Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences which are being held on Thursday 11th October, running from 12 pm - 7.30pm. There are no classes on this day, however students are expected to attend the conferences with their parents. Bookings for the conferences can be made via the School Portal. If Parents are unable to make the interviews but still would like to speak to the Teachers, I encourage you to ring the school to make an appointment for early Term 4. School for Student Leadership 2019 – China We have been informed that the school has been allocated six places for Year 9 students 2019 to attend the DET School for Student Leadership. Our students have been allocated Term 4. As part of this placement, three boys and three girls will be involved in an international expedition of 6 weeks in China, based at Utahloy International School as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China Program. We expect there will be significant interest from our current Year 8 students to be allocated a place, consequently we will hold an information session, outlining the trip and selection process during Term 4. This will be the second time we are able to offer this opportunity to our students, with six of our Year 9 students heading to China in Term 4 this year. Uniform change As mentioned in previous Newsletters, Oberon will be updating our school uniform and changing suppliers from 11th October, 2018. Our new uniform supplier PSW, has been wonderful to work with and pleasingly the cost of new items has reduced. This ceremony celebrates the achievements of students with awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Outstanding Effort or for Citizenship/School Service throughout the year. Top students in Year 12 subjects, all students who achieve over 90% in the VCE score (ATAR) and our Year 12 Dux are also presented.

Students will be notified if they are to receive an award at the ceremony and, clearly, there is an expectation they will attend. All students attending and those receiving awards must be wearing correct school uniform. Awardees will NOT BE presented on stage with their award if they are not in correct school uniform.

Indonesian Study Tour 2018 The Indonesian study tour returns on September 21st. After 2 weeks in Indonesia the 26 students have deepened their understanding of not just the Indonesian language, but also the culture of Indonesia. The students visited a variety of temples, the Sultans palace, rode on becaks and illuminated pedal cars , they bargained, they tasted a huge variety of different Indonesian foods, they visited our Sister School, (where Mr Baker managed to get himself on local tv), learnt Indonesian dances, martial arts and how to make batik, and also visited an Orphanage where they donated the money they raised from fundraising at school. (Special mention to Ruby Winter who managed to raise $300 of the $900 we raised) . The students have had a fantastic trip, and as a group have been great ambassadors for our school. Special thanks goes to Nicola Maher, Gayle Tyson-Whittaker and Josh Baker for giving up their time to assist me in the running of this tour. Bu Sugiyanto
