Welcome to the February/March issue of About Knocklyon

Hello and welcome to our first edition of AboutKnocklyon for 2011.

This month we highlight the current plight of somelocal charities still trying to raise much needed funds, Iwrote about their plight very briefly in the last editionand I have been made aware of how desperate theyare to keep their essential projects going. As we all findthings a little tighter in the pocket, worthwhile localprojects like this tend to lose out to much larger scaleglobal fundraising. If like Saplings School or theLauraLynn Project you are involved in a local charity orcommunity group we would love to hear from you tohighlight your program.

Are you struggling and need to lose a few pounds wehave some excellent advice and solutions fromrenowned South Dublin Nutritionist Anne Owens.

The Mill Theatre’s new full program of great nights outat the theatre for February/ March and we alsohighlight one of their popular Drama groups, theaward winning Balally Players. If you are looking toopen up your own set of lung’s and set the music free,CORus are looking for budding singers all over SouthDublin to join in their new no audition choirs, so lookfor them.

As always there is plenty for everyone Events, News,Advice and Competitions, if you have any interest inwriting a piece on your local area, event or somethingthat you think our readers might be interested in thenplease contact us we would be happy to discussdeveloping it.

You will also be glad to hear that even though anelection has been called we are a politic free zone thisissue but we would urge all our readers to ensure theyget out and vote on 25th February.

Take care everyone and God Bless.

ABOUT VALENTINES

History of Valentines

The Valentine's Day History is shrouded in mystery andthere is lot of confusion regarding the Saint. We canbe sure though that February is the month of romance.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest. Heserved in Rome during the third century and at this timeEmperor Claudius II decided that unmarried soldiers werebetter than the married ones. Thus he outlawed marriagefor young soldiers. Valentine realized this injustice andperformed marriages in secret for the young lovers. WhenClaudius found out, Valentine was put to death.

Another legend suggests that the first 'valentine' greetingwas sent by Valentine. It is a common belief that whenValentine was in prison, he fell in love with a girl. This girlwas the daughter of the jailor who visited Valentine duringhis days of confinement. He wrote a letter to her justbefore his death and signed as 'From your Valentine'. Anexpression still used today of course. The real truth behindthe legends of Valentine is still murky but the stories reflecthis heroic, sympathetic and romantic personality andappeal. Valentine was one of the more popular saints inFrance and England in the Middle Ages.

There is some opinion that Valentine's Day is celebrated inmid February to commemorate Valentine's death whichwas around 270 A.D. Others believe that Valentine's feastwas organized in mid February in order to Christianise thepagan Lupercalia festival. Lupercalia dedicated to theRoman God of Agriculture, Faunus, is a fertility festival. Inthis festival, the members of the Luperci would cometogether at the sacred cave where the infants Remus andRomulus were said to be cared for by a lupa or a she-wolf.

The gathered priests would sacrifice a Dog for purificationand a Goat for fertility. Then the Goat hide strips would betaken around the streets and women gently slapped withthem. It was believed that the strips would make thewomen more fertile. Later, the women had to place their

names in a huge urn. The bachelors of the city had tochoose individual names of the women from the urn andthen they were paired for at least one year. These pairswere thought to often resulted in marriages.

Around 498 A.D, February 14th was declared as SaintValentine's Day by Pope Gelasius. In France and England,it was a common belief that Valentine's Day is the matingseason of the birds. The oldest Valentine which existstoday is a poem written by the Duke of Orleans to his wifewhile he was in prison of Tower of London.

Valentine's Day started to be celebrated around theseventeenth century in Great Britain then Ireland. Friendsand lovers exchanged tokens of gifts and love. At present,Valentine's Day ranks second among the largest card-sending holidays after Christmas.

ABOUT DATING

Dine to Meet

We are looking for single men!

In the last few months we have successfully advertised inAbout Magazines and have received many applicationsfrom lovely ladies who would like to meet single men –we now want more men to sign up!Instead of us telling you how good we are – we will getour male clients to do the talking for us!“It was a great night and there was no pressure. I'dwelcome an invite to another table” - Pierre (Dublin)“Had a fantastic night. Everyone was friendly and goodfun. The restaurant was wonderful. Will definitely be doingDine to Meet again!” - Jack (Dublin)

“I had a great time and believe all of the others did too.The venue was great, the food superb and the companyeven better”– Gerard (Dublin)

It was a great night and there was no pressure. I'dwelcome an invite to another table – Colm (Dublin)One of the major concerns about meeting new people isthe safe environment & atmosphere of how and where

the meeting takes place. We make the restaurantreservation & arrange one small table (and by small wemean either 6 or 8 people in total) with same number ofmen & women.

A generalisation is that men tend to be hesitant to try newoptions and we want to change this and encourage moremales as members! - so if you are a man or know any menover 30 who might be interested – check out orencourage them to check out our websitewww.dinetomeet.ie or call 087 7640 385

ABOUT FLOWERS

Valentine’s Day.... A Florist’s Perspective! The idea of buying “over-priced” Roses on Valentine’sDay annoys a lot people. The romantics among usdon’t need a particular day in the year to express theirlove, yet the pressure is great to make the gesture andso men feel forced to make that purchase.

Florists get a lot of criticism as people feel they are beingripped off. In fact florists pay inflated prices for flowers. Our benefit is in increased sales, not increased margins! It’s all about supply and demand; the demand is high soprices increase. Each year we hear the adverts for dozen red roses for €5!!However it’s like all things, you get what you pay for.People don’t understand why they should pay €70-€80for a dozen roses when they can get them for €5! It’s alldown to quality. Rose quality is based on: Length & strength of stem, shelflife, size of head, and in the case of red roses how well itopens up into velvety petals. In the shop this year we aredoing a gorgeous dozen with Kenyan roses for €50 anddozen high end Dutch roses for €70 and lots of prices inbetween. Roses shine brightly but for a short time (7-10 days).

ABOUT GARDENING

Round the Garden in February

There are two seasonal diversions that can ease thebite of any winter. One is the February thaw, the otheris the seed catalogues. Hal Borland.

What can be more relaxing than using this quiet, dark andcold time of year as an opportunity to look through pagesof the seed and shrub catalogues? You can spend plentyof time browsing pages of perfect flowers and shrubs, planning where they will fit into your garden.

The more planning you can do, the more likely yourgarden and choice of new plants will be a success.Research the plants that catch your eye and make surethey will grow on your soil and fit your garden once fullygrown. Look back at the past garden year; what thrivedand survived and what failed or outgrew its home?

If you have never ordered from catalogues before orhaven’t received any through the post, you can usuallyfind adverts in newspapers and magazines. It’s worthordering a few to gain some background information ona range of plants and also to see the countless newvarieties that will have been recently released. Often thecatalogues carry varieties not found in the garden centres.

Plug-plants are a great way of buying a considerablenumber of plants, usually annuals, to create large swathesof colour later in the year. However remember they aretiny seedlings that need to be grown on in a greenhousebefore planting out. If you don’t have a greenhouse thenpay a little more and buy plants that are larger.

ABOUT RECIPE

Lemon Chicken with a Cashew Crunch

With Christmas gone and the new year started with

healthy intentions, we didn’t think it fair to tempt

hungry readers with something cream-filled or

chocolate-dipped. But healthy doesn’t have to mean

boring, so here’s a little something for those cold

January nights that’s packed with colourful vegetables

and full of flavour.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of olive oil

2 chicken breasts, sliced

1 clove of garlic, peeled and diced

1 onion, sliced

150g broccoli

1 large carrot, cut into sticks

1 red or yellow pepper, cut into strips

200ml chicken stock

1 tbsp cornflour

2 tbsp honey

1 lemon, grated rind and juice

75g cashew nuts

A handful of beansprouts or white cabbage

Chilli flakes (for an optional kick!)

Brown rice or noodles to serve.

Serves: 2

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a large pan or wok and add the

chicken. Stir fry for a few minutes until the chicken

begins to turn gold, then set aside.

2. In the same pan, cook the onion and garlic until they

begin to brown, then add the broccoli and carrot

and cook for about a minute.

3. In a jug mix the stock, honey and cornflour together

and pour into the pan. Return the chicken to the

heat and stir until the sauce has thickened and the

chicken is cooked through.

4. Tip in the lemon rind, juice, cashews and a sprinkle

of chilli flakes if desired and serve with brown rice or

noodles - and a healthy conscience.

Whether you are looking for Toshiba laptops, parts, accessories, service, repairs or advice visit their largeshowroom at 98 Nutgrove Avenue or telephone4930514.

You also might remember a piece that we covered afew months ago that was brought to our attention byAnne in MicroPro. It concerned the practice of so

called PC engineers calling to find out if yourcomputer was running a little slow (don’t they all),when they asked you to go to particular website anddownload a link invariably you would be told that, yesyour computer was indeed in need of repair and thatfor a fee of around €200 they could help.

The downloaded link is in fact a back door into yoursystem which allows these scam artists access to allyour stored information, and the €200 that you firstpaid will be taken from your Bank account again andagain.

Well, after we alerted people to this scam we havebeen contacted by some who have received these callsand thankfully have not downloaded the link. I havegiven anyone who contacted me about this matter thename of an officer in An Garda Síochána who islooking at this and hopefully they are makingprogress.

If you have been taken in by this scam, and from whatwe know it is quite easy to be taken in by thesepeople, please tell us your story as it might help us toinform others who have been called, as we believe itis still being tried all over South Dublin.

Email [email protected] with your storyand if your need advice about how to fix thisproblem you contact any of the staff in MicroProand they are more than willing to help.

Some spammers use software to randomly generateemail addresses for popular email providers e.g.hotmail.com. Commonly called dictionary attacks, thesoftware will guess the first part of an email address – forexample HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]"[email protected]. So when creating your emailaddress ensure you use special characters such asunderscores or numbers.

Some spammers use special software called emailharvesters which scan webpages for email addresses.Common targets are message boards and socialnetworking websites. So when including your emailaddress on a webpage (for example when you use amessage board) try to obscure it. For example, use johnAT yourprovider.com instead of using the @ symbol.

SPAM emails will almost always invite you tounsubscribe from their mailing list. This is a way forthem to confirm your email address is real. It will offera link, or it will say something like 'Reply to this emailwith UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject'. Only unsubscribefrom mails you are certain you originally subscribed to.

ABOUT NUTRITION

Lose Weight and Feel Great

Have you been gaining weight over the last fewyears?Do you find it increasingly difficult to lose weight?Do you crave particular foods?Do you feel tired all the time?Have you been yo-yo dieting?

If the answer to any of above is yes then your bloodsugar is probably out of balance. Keeping your bloodsugar stable is the secret to losing weight. You may befamiliar with the Glycemic Index (GI) of foods, however the Glycemic Load (GL) is a better way ofgauging the effect of foods on your blood sugar levels, and thus your energy, wellbeing and weight.

GL is a measure of the quantity and quality ofcarbohydrate in any given food. It shows us the effecteach type of food has on our blood sugar. Foods witha high GL rating encourage the body to "store" fat.Foods with a low GL rating enourage the body to"burn" fat.

You might be amazed by some of the foods that havea high GL rating. Cornflakes have a very high GL whilstice cream and peanuts do not! Your body is designedto burn glucose for energy. Carbhydrates such asgrains ( bread, pasta, rice ) and fruits are broken downinto glucose in the body.

But in today’s typical western diet, the wrong types ofcarbohydrates are consumed excessively resulting intoo much blood glucose. The excess is stored as fatleaving the body craving even more food to meet itsenergy requirements. When this happens the bodyhas lost blood sugar control and weight gain becomesinevitable.

If your blood glucose levels are even, you'll have asteady supply of energy and a healthy but balancedappetite. But, if your blood sugar levels are too high, you'll lay down fat and if they are too low, you'll feeltired and lethargic. Balance is key.

A quarter of all people, and nine out of ten peoplewith weight problems have difficulty keeping theirblood sugar balanced. The result is exhaustion andweight gain. Obese people are 77 times more at riskof developing diabetes than non-obese people - astatistic that alone tells you how strongly linked weightgain is to blood sugar control.

So, the best way to lose weight is to regain bloodsugar control which heralds the return of your body'sability to burn fat.

How to balance your blood sugar -Avoid sugar and stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes )Eat a low Glycemic Load diet.Eat protein with carbohydratesDrink plenty of waterExercise every day.

Skoda Fabia RSHere is a question for you. What is the mosthorsepower you can have for the least amount ofmoney? Stuck? Well we think we have found it.Skoda is a brand that has totally transformedthemselves over the last few years. And now they arestarting to show off. We have seen the Yeti over thelast twelve months, which is one of the best smallSUV’s around and now we have the Fabia RS.

It seems that Skoda have been granted access to thebest of the Volkswagen Group parts bin with thishigh-performance RS, because it employs theexcellent 1.4-litre TSi engine, which uses aturbocharger and a supercharger to produce awhopping 180hp and 250Nm of torque in a car thatweights just 1243kg.

The RS model gains 17” alloy wheels, a doubleexhaust tailpipe and diffuser, sports seats and lots ofRS badging. It looks aggressive, but perhaps notaggressive enough. The rather high roof of the cardoesn’t lend itself to a sporty look and when you sitinside you find a cabin that isn’t all that different toa regular Fabia. There is a lot of black plastic aroundand while there are better seats, it just all looks a littlebland.

But who cares when you start it up and hear thatdelicious growl from the engine and its grumblyexhaust. And that fact that you are getting thebrilliant new 7-speed DSG gearbox thrown in asstandard is also quite remarkable. This gearbox gives

you the best of both worlds, operating as a smoothautomatic and when you want it to be aperformance transmission it is, swapping cogssmoothly because the principle of DSG is that italways has the next gear ready for you.

The handling is great, with plenty of feedback fromthe steering rack and although you definitely sit alittle too high up for a car with sporty pretentionsthis is probably the only real drawback in what is agreat package. But probably the most significantnews is the price tag. Skoda only want €22,690 ofyour hard-earned cash for this remarkable little car.We are pretty sure that this is the most horsepoweryou can buy for the least money in a new car and itproved further that Skoda are offering outstandingquality at outstanding value. We are seriouslyimpressed.

ABOUT CHARITY

Ireland's First Hospice for Children and their Families

It is hoped that Ireland's first Children's Hospicecalled LauraLynn House will be able to support over300 families across Ireland a year when it opens itsdoors very soon in Sandyford. The LauraLynnHouse Paediatric Palliative Care unit will provideeight bedrooms along with living facilities as wellas four family apartments, to enable relatives to beclose to their children. These units will be anessential component of the Palliative CareProgramme so desperately needed.

Until now, Ireland has never had a dedicated hospicefor children. As families face the most difficult momentimaginable, they have traditionally had two options:for a child to spend their last days in a hospital or athome.

The LauraLynn House will be the realization of theshared vision of the LauraLynn Children’s HospiceFoundation and The Children's Sunshine Home. Bornout of the tragedy of the McKenna family who losttheir only two daughters, Laura and Lynn, to unrelatedillnesses in the span of two years, the hospice will bea “home from home” for children with life-limitingconditions and their families. A place where childrencan receive dignified care and families can receive on-going support from a team of dedicated professionals.

When it is known that life is short, two things becomevery important to the family; the quality of life and theenjoyment of the time that is left. Caring for aseriously ill child puts an immense physical andemotional strain on the whole family. The demandsabsorb the very time and energy that is needed toenjoy life.

As part of their community fund project EBS Beaconmanager, Dairmuid Boyle donated his branches €500to the project to help with their much neededfunding, again as local community projects andcharities struggle to ensure continuity in their fundinga lot more help is needed.

A residential children's hospice is a family’s last optionbut a real option for some—offering a place wherethey can relax, recharge their batteries, share the careand have fun with their children. Expert care is onhand to help them make the most of each day and livelife to the full.Philomena DunneCEO of The Children’s Sunshine Home

“After Lynn’s death I got to thinking about the lackof options, other than a hospital, for families withchildren who are dying. In the UK they had dozensof hospice facilities for children, in Northern Irelandthere was one, but in Ireland there were none. That was the beginning of our work to establishthe first hospice for children in Ireland. A lot ofpeople are uncomfortable talking about death orchildren being sick or dying, especially here inIreland and I think it’s much better to talk about itand be open. Share. Talk. Cry. This is not a roadI ever thought I would be on. I’m not an organizer,I’m not a public speaker and it just isn’t my naturebut this project is so important. People have beenincredibly supportive and kind and they believe inwhat we are building. My children had a beautifullife, though brief. On my worst days, Laura andLynn’s courage is with me.”Jane McKenna

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

Legal Considerations For Motor Accidents

At Dillon Solicitors we sincerely hope that you arenever involved in a motor accident. However, in theunfortunate event that you are we wish to provideyou with some practical legal advice.

Ten legal considerations when involved in anaccident:1. Stop. Keep your vehicle at or near the scene of the

accident for a reasonable amount of time. 2. Ring 999 or 112 for emergency services if anyone is

injured. 3. Note the make, colour and registration of the other

car.4. Exchange details of names, addresses of all parties involved in the accident. Take insurance details of other cars from the insurance disk of vehicle. 5. Take note of the injuries complained of by you and

by others.6. Take photos of scene if possible. Use the phone in your camera if necessary. 7. Do not admit liability or state who was right or wrong.8. Get witness details, addresses and phone numbers.9. Ring 999 for the local Garda Station. Take note of Garda on duty to whom the report is made. 10. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible.

If you have a motor accident the law says you muststop. If you drive away, you could be charged with hitand run even if the accident was not your fault. Youshould give reasonable assistance to anyone who isinjured. For example, you may need to call anambulance, take the injured person to a doctor orhospital, or give first aid— only if you know how.

What if I do not know the identity of the otherdriver?Sometimes it is impossible to obtain the details of theother driver at the scene of an accident. However, youcan still pursue a claim even if you do not know theidentity of the party at fault. If the Gardai have attendedthe accident scene your Solicitor can and pay a smallfee for the details of the other driver and request therelevant Gardai report.

If one has been the victim of what is known as a ‘hit andrun’ incident or have later discovered that the driver ofthe other vehicle was uninsured a legal remedy is stillavailable. In such circumstances your Solicitor can referthe matter to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Irelandwhich exists to protect the victims of car accidentswhen the party at fault is unidentified or uninsured. TheMIBI effectively acts as the ‘insurer’ of the unknown oruntraced driver .

Talk to us today if you have had an accident and youwish to discuss a possible claim or to obtain a copy ofour accident assist brochure that comes with a freeinsurance disk holder.
