Seamiid Moran - A 'Man af 'Maiity Tart& ) 15 year old girl. This proved very popular, especially with the young people who could relate more easily to the character and plot. Kathleen McArdle directed the play.

Interested too in history, Seamus decided he would go back to College to gain a B.A. In U.C.D. he also became very involved with The Experimental Theatre -it fascinated him, as did the Tom Mclntyre plays. In 1985/86 he played several par ts wi th the Company, notably in "Baal" and "Parnell". Sometime during this period Seamus applied for a one year career break - a year w h i c h f inal ly t u r n e d i n t o five. The spark had turned into a flame. There was no going back.

He joined the Field Day Theatre Company and spent fifteen months with them. During this t ime he toured Ireland for four months and spent five weeks in London performing at the Hampstead Theatre. There he played Carson, a fictional character in the play "St. Oscar", ( this was also f i lmed) and also in Seamus Heaney's adaptation of "The Curse of Troy".

From t h e n on it was ac t ing all t h e way. He has appeared in many productions such as the film "In the Name of the Father", T.V. - Parnell, the series by B.B.C. T.V. and Channel 4; Molloy in R.T.E.'s "The Governor", "The Hanging Gale", and "Ballykissangel" in which he played The Ambassador and J. B. Keane's "The Field" in the Gaiety Theatre.

In November 1996 he joined the cast of "Fair City" for seven weeks as Helen's boyfriend. From there you know the rest and have probably marvelled at the phen-omenal success of this Irish soap.

Seamus is mar r ied to Eleanor, a P r imary School teacher who is also an actor in her own right and a good one too. Although she loves the theatre she is no t inter-ested in pursuing a professional career, but is very much into amateur drama which she loves. They have two children, Katie nearly eight and Stephen four, and they are all very proud of Dad.

Seamus expects to stay with Fair City for some time, but he is well aware of the lifestyle associated with act-ing as a career. There is not a huge amount of work avail-able if one is acting dependent and many actors resort to writing or temporary work to fill the gap. Yet the pull is there - the chance to travel - the chance to reach the top.

Seamus himself has his own goal and that is to do one-man shows. His ideas are very exciting and will no doubt lead to the success he deserves. Good luck to you Seamus. We will be with you all the way.

Eileen Casey

If you are a fan of "Fair City" you are bound to know Mike Gleeson. He's the good guy and must surely be the m o s t h a n d s o m e m a n in t h a t very successful twice weekly soap. In real life, Mike Gleeson is of course Seamus Moran, a very ta lented actor w h o lives right here in Knocklyon.

Seamus was born in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, one of a family of four children, two boys and two girls. He grew up in that lovely part of Ireland with never a thought of embracing the histrionic arts. Indeed his first glimpse of the world of enter ta inment was his appearance in "The Sound of Music" and later in "The Golden Years". These shows were p e r f o r m e d by t he s tuden t s of t he local Christian Brothers School where Seamus was a pupil. At the time, it would seem that he was more interested in football.

On completion of his Leaving Cert, he entered Carys- . fort College to train as a Primary School teacher. During t he se years of t r a i n i n g he a d m i t s t h a t he was still in te res ted in footba l l but also to a g rowing love of Drama. This, he says, was entirely due to the influence of Mar ie -Louise O ' D o n n e l l a n d her p r o d u c t i o n o.f Milton's "Paradise Lost". This poem, said to be the great-est epic p o e m in the English language, was his first in t roduc t ion to Choral Verse Speaking and the thea-trical power of the spoken word. The following year, Marie-Louise invited h im to play the role of "Toad" in A. A. Milne's play "Toad of Toad Hall".

After leav ing Carys for t , Seamus t a u g h t in m a n y primary schools around the country. His first venture into Shakespeare was a production of "Othello" for the Leaving Cert. He re-named it "Desdemona" because he h a s a l w a y s b e l i e v e d t h a t t h e m a i n c h a r a c t e r in "Othello" is Desdemona, a part which he assigned to a

INTERIOR DESIGN UPDATING YOUR KITCHEN

... ON A BUDGET For many of us the heart and engine room of the house is the kitchen. This is the room where the best plans are made and informal family gatherings take place.

If you would like to give your kitchen a facelift but are limited to a tight budget look no fu r the r . . . here are some inexpensive ideas that could give your kitchen that 90s look! # It gets hot in the kitchen so choose some cool

colours for your walls. Pale blues and lavenders are suitable for that modern look.

# Update your lighting by changing that centre hung light. Recessed downlighters which are strategically placed will give that clean modern look to your ceiling. Low voltage bulbs are best.

# If your kitchen tiles are starting to look a little dated and you can't face tearing them down, don't worry, there is another solution! It's quite accept-able to tile over your existing tiles and remember smaller mosaic tiles will help create a more interesting look.

# Kitchen units/cupboards can also be painted with Dulux satinwood. This is a good quality paint and is suitable for most wood and metal surfaces. Add your own individual touch by replacing all cup-board knobs/handles with more up-to-date fittings. Some examples are chrome, stainless steel or even frosted glass handles.

# Create that fresh look by updating some of your kitchen utensils/accessories. For example, a new curvy kettle finished in chrome (available in most good stores) will really set off your new kitchen. It also won' t cost the earth.

# Finally, if you are considering replacing your flooring a hardwood floor is a great investment. It is a durable surface and is suitable for heavy traffic areas like the family kitchen. Happy decorating...

W h e n Noelle Lennon's Dad int roduced her to CYMS

Terenure Sports Club at the age of seven, he had no

idea that she w o u l d become the Irish under 12 number

one table tennis player; go on to become the under 14

number one, and recently the under 17 number one.

Noelle, w h o lives in Knockaire is 16 and a transition

year s tudent in Beaufort Convent has been playing

tennis and table tennis since she can remember, and

has gone from strength to strength. She has repres-

ented Ireland in the European Championship in France,

Holland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and this year

in July she is off to Italy, where no doubt, she will do us

proud. She achieved her first International Cap this year

When w e spoke to Noelle she was preparing for the

Kent Open team event, and at the same time rehears-

ing for her school's product ion of "Grease". She is a

multi talented young lady. She also plays on the school

hockey team.

Noe l l e is a m u c h t rave l l ed 16 year old and is fortunate that her parents Eucharia and Noel (no mean

tennis player!) have been able to fund her trips all over

Europe. However, w e feel that Noelle's success deserves some recognit ion and that sponsorship w o u l d be in

order. If any individual or Company wou ld like to be

associated w i t h Noelle's achievements and in repres-

enting Ireland in Europe, she can be contacted through

the Newsletter.

In the meant ime w e wish Noelle every success in

Kent, in Italy and no doubt w e will hear more of this

energetic young lady in the future.

On Thursday 12th March a meeting took place in order to elect two representatives from Knocklyon, to represent us at the Women's Forum at Deanery and Diocesan level. The attendance was disappointing despite advance announcement.

One of our representatives Catherine Collins was re-elected while outgoing re-presentative Catherine Donohue was re-placed by Brid O'Connell.

No doubt, Catherine and Brid will keep us up-to-date with developments in this area.

KNOCKLYON H1SCOB1CAL S O C 1 6 C Y

Annie M. P. Smithson The 50th anniversary of the death of Annie M . P. Smithson, nurse and author, was on the 21st February 1998 and the Knocklyon Historical Group commemorated her in a talk recently.

Annie was born in 1873 in Sandymount of a Protestant family with close family ties with Cloragh Cottage in Tibradden. Annie's father died when she was eight years old. Her mother remarried. There was some financial difficulty from time to time. When Annie grew up she had a wish to become a writer but trained as a nurse in London and Edinburgh. She wished to be a Jubilee (or district) Nurse and to come back to Dublin and work among the poor of the city.

It was during her time in Edinburgh, a time of lone-liness and sadness that she first became interested in the Catholic Church. Having finished her course there she returned to Dublin where she trained as a midwife at the Coombe Hospital. She received instruction from a Sister in the Hospice in Harold's Cross and was received into the Catholic Church in Rathmines Parish Church on 15th March, 1907.

Annie was assigned to various country districts. She was happiest when transferred to Dublin's inner city working at Charles Street. Finally she was appointed to the Mill-town district which also included Rathmines, Clonskeagh and Dundrum. Annie was active in Cumann na mBan and nursed volunteers during the War of Independence. It was with a certain joy that she learned in later years that her father had been with the Fenians in the Tallaght Rising of 1867. Annie was imprisoned for a short while for her re-publican activities and was forced to resign from the Queen's Nurses Committee.

Needing to work Annie turned to writing. The Talbot Press published her first novel Her Irish Heritage in 1917. About twenty more books were to follow, all best sellers. The Weldons of Tibradden and her autobiography, Myself and Others were among the most popular.

Annie's later years were involved with the setting up of the Irish Nurses' Union, later to become the Irish Nurses' Organisation of which she was Secretary and Organizer until 1942. She rests now in the Tibradden area so beloved of her youth, in Whitechurch Cemetery.

CKLV. community council 0>1 oil 7

The KCC wishes the community a happy and peaceful Easter. At our first meeting following the AGM, a new executive was elected as follows: Chairman: Vice-Chair: Correspondence Secretary: Minutes Secretary: Treasurer:

Damien Fee (Lansdowne Residents Association) Bill Meagher (Independent)

Kevin Geoghegan (Templeroan) David Hickey Pat Morey (Westbourne Lodge)

Committee Convenors will be listed next month along with their aims and objectives.

PLANNING SUB-COMMITTEE The KCC, following a number of meetings with various interested parties, have agreed on a number of recommendations which have been for-warded to Local Councillors and the Local Authority for consideration.

1. Footpath Completion (A) Knocklyon Road: > From No. 8 Knocklyon Cottages to Junction of Woodstock Park. > From Esso garage to beginning of Houses at Dargle Wood (including

Knockcullen). > The completion of the footpath on the western side of the Templeroan

Road i.e., from roundabout at Templeroan to the Junction with Knock-lyon Road opposite the cottages.

> To be completed: Continuation of the footpath at Knocklyon Manor to the junction of Knocklyon Road at Delany's.

The need for these works arises from the gaps in the present network and in particular in the interests of safety of the local children. The KCC acknowledges the excellent work being done at Boden Park and in relation to the development of Cycle Lanes in the area.

(B) Scholarstown Road: From Beverly Estate to the junction of Woodfield Estate. From Rookery to Scholarstown Estate.

2. Road Works Recommendations > Idrone Avenue: Improvement of junction Realign Idrone Avenue at the junction of Superquinn to improve traffic flow from Church up to junction with Knocklyon Road and to provide extra lane. > Yellow Box at Superquinn > Double yellow lines to extend from the junction opposite the Church to the end of Idrone Avenue thus allowing a free-flow for residents and emergency services > Double yellow lines also from outside the Church to the Superquinn entrance. > "No Parking" Signs > 2 Lane exit from Superquinn

The sub-committee suggests that, in the light of increased business and trading with all its attendant problems, it is the responsibility of Superquinn and South Dublin County Council to plan a new exit /entrance for Superquinn in order to help traffic flow.

3. Traffic Wardens Needed at: • ESSO Station • Pedestrian Lights at Superquinn (near Dargle Wood) • Across Idrone Avenue outside the Church.

The KCC has written separately seeking a meeting with the County Council in relation to:

> The Southern Cross Route Motorway > An overview of traffic in all of Knocklyon > To request that the contractor not close Old Knocklyon Road's

Intersection with Ballycullen until M50 is complete.

Post-Primary School The KCC welcomed the decision by the Minister for Education, Micheal Martin TD, to proceed with the building of the school for the year 2000. The KCC will continue to use its influence to ensure that the construction work will start at an early date.

ommunion gS

As the month of May approaches, the parish, school and many families look forward again to the annual celebra-tion of First Holy Communion. It 's a beautiful and appropriate time of year to celebrate this blossoming of faith of young children into the first fruits of Eucharistic life. The children are, as always, buzzing with excite-ment and anticipation as their teachers prepare them and keep them focused on the significance of the great day ahead.

At the start of every year, teachers and priests meet together to begin des igning the First Communion Liturgy, building on the wealth of positive experience of past years, yet never content merely to repeat what has gone before . This year it was decided to plan an increased involvement of parents to add to the already meaningful participation of children, teachers and priests. Thus we hope, in a concrete and symbolic way, to bring home to the children that Communion is essentially a celebration of Community; something they are not likely to grasp solely through expression in words.

The change of day from Saturday to Sunday is also made with this all important community dimension in mind. It is intended to bring home to the children, and indeed to all of us, that the Eucharist is a Sacrament to be partaken of frequently, and intrinsically linked with the regular discipline of Sunday Mass as the norm for all Catholics. Hence it is that, on a worldwide basis, Sunday Mass has always been the most usual context for First Holy Communion.

All change is difficult. All the more is this so when change is made from a proven positive experience to what, from the nature of the case, is as yet untried. As the one ultimately responsible for having made the final decision to change, albeit with the approval and support of priests, teachers and Parish Council, I want to express gratitude to all who have gone along with that decision, some with enthusiasm, some with understandable initial hesitation. Equally, I want to say to those who have found the change difficult to accept, that I appreciate many of their reservations, and regret the hurt that several of them have felt, and may be feeling still.

Finally, I hope and pray that our Parish Celebration of First Communion this year will be a truly positive, uplifting and faith-building experience for all.

Fr. David

POST-PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR KNOCKLYON!

Some future pupils of Knocklyon Post-Primary School You will probably have heard the good news that our long promised Community School has been sanctioned by the Minister for Education, Mr Micheal Martin, TD and that a proposed opening date has been set for S e p t e m b e r 2000 . Firs t ly , on beha l f of both the "Knocklyon Pos t -Pr imary Commit tee" and the "Action Committee to Save the School Site" (ACSSS), I would like to record my thanks to all the residents in Knocklyon who supported the campaign to have the school built . Our thanks are also due to Minis te rs O 'Donne l l , Brennan and Kitt who lobbied hard to maintain their election promise to deliver the school for Knocklyon. As many of you know, this has been a long battle and one which carries huge significance for the f u t u r e of K n o c k l y o n and for i ts v i ab i l i t y as a community. We should not take things for granted how-ever, but I am confident that with just one final push we can finally achieve our objective of having a community school which will serve both the child and adult educa-tional needs of our growing parish. We must urge the Minister through our public representatives to immedia-tely proceed with the building of the school to open at the earliest opportunity, hopefully September 1999. In this regard I ask all who are committed to securing the school to lobby for this opening date and to continue to support our committee's efforts towards this objective. Wc intend to meet with officials from the Department of Education for a br ief ing and an exchange of v iews relating to the design, size and operation of the proposed school.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS We try our best to maintain the school grounds for the

enjoyment of pupils, parents and the wider community. We

ask the parents for your support in encouraging the children

to respect their surroundings. Tom, our caretaker is doing a

fine job with the flower beds and general ground mainten-

ance. We need the support of parents to encourage the

children to show respect for what is being done. Please do

not walk on the grass or flowerbeds. Unfortunately, a lot of

plants and flowers were uprooted during the few days break

(over St. Patrick's Day).

• Registrations for September '98 should have been con-

firmed by now. Successful applicants will be notified very

shortly.

• Many thanks to all who have sent the Tesco vouchers etc.

Ms. Ruddy will put them to good use in acquiring computer

software for the school.

• The week 2nd - 5th March saw the National Basketball

whistles, accordians. cymbals etc. On Thursday 5th the

children from Ms. O'Donoghue's and Ms. Meeley's classes

played their recorders. We congratulate them on their per-

formance and hope to see them back again.

• The 2nd Class indoor soccer league is drawing to a close

with the top four teams qualifying for playoffs on the last

week of term. Likely candidates for qualification are hard to

now.

• The Senior Infant, First and Second Classes are looking

forward to their trip to the National Concert Hall on Monday

May l l th. The concert, organized by the Music in the Class-

room division of the Irish Times is intended as an intro-

duction to the world of classical music and the programme

is specifically tailored to the tastes of children in the junior

school.

• We congratulate the children of the second classes who

This a p p r o a c h is in t ended as a complemen t to or thodox me thods of surgery, t reatment , and on-going medical care. Apart from the physical symptoms, a great deal of psychological and spiritual suppor t is needed to sustain patients through any serious illness.

SLANU offers a p r o g r a m m e inc luding relaxation, meditat ion, visualization, art therapy, journalling, nutritional therapy and music therapy. It aims to create a suppor t ive envi ronment where people with a diagnosis of cancer or other illness can take time to explore: (a) coming to terms with their illness. (b) their own inner process and transformation. (c) holistic at t i tudes and skills for living life as fully as possible in relation to self, others, the environment and the source of life. (d) the value of the present moment.

For people who are ill being facilitated in this process can be a really positive and life enhancing alternative to focusing solely on physical symptoms.

Over the past ten years many people have been encouraged and cared for at the Ga lway Centre (whose mot to is: "I have come in order that you might have life - life in all its fullness", John 10.10) and g radua l ly b ranches are be ing set u p a r o u n d the count ry . A Dublin g roup meets in St. Luke's Hospital on the last Tuesday of every month at 8 p.m., and it is a great consolation for people who have been diagnosed as having a serious illness to meet others who have made a full recovery. Recently a one day workshop entitled "A Taste of Slanu" was at tended by forty people w h o came away feeling positive and hopeful for the future. I was fortunate to be one of those-forty people, and I would like to think that any of our readers who are suffering from an illness will take a note of the day and time of the month ly meetings. They can be assured of a wor thwhi le and positive experience that can be of great benefit to them.

It's that time of year again, when the Parish C o u n c i l b e g i n to p l a n t h e P a r i s h Social Calendar for the next twelve months. From its earliest days Knocklyon as a parish has always va lued the impor tance of p r o v i d i n g oppor-tunities for par ishioners to meet each other socially whether it be at the annual Christmas Fair, during the many events of Parish Week, or at one of the numerous fundra i s ing func-tions which have dotted our past. These occas-ions have, we hope, helped to build a stronger sense of community in Knocklyon while being e n t e r t a i n i n g and m o s t e n j o y a b l e in them-selves. As a communi ty therefore, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many organisers and helpers who have m a d e all these events happen, with great flair, over a long period of time.

As a step in p lann ing the organizat ion of fu ture social events in the parish, a meeting will take place on M O N D A Y 6th APRIL in the I O N A R O O M (Pre - fab) at 8 P.M. It is h o p e d at th is m e e t i n g to f o r m a S tee r ing Commi t t ee to oversee a n d co -o rd ina t e the activities associated wi th the va r ious social events that will fill our social diaries in the months ahead.

If y o u ' v e been i n v o l v e d in th i s a rea of parish work in the past, and are in a position to offer your services again this year, please do come along on 6th - your experience will be invaluable in deciding the best way forward for 98/99. If you've no previous direct experi-ence, but are willing to commit some of your time and energies to this dimension of life in Knocklyon , you wil l be e q u a l l y w e l c o m e . Remember " D o n ' t let w h a t y o u canno t do interfere with what you can do".

We look forward to meeting you on the 6th.
