The idea of developing a network of

influence was conceived in 1997 by the

late Arshad Chaudhry. The realisation

that business support agencies were

not engaging with the Asian business

community and that a gateway was

needed to enable mainstream agencies

to reach this community was the driver.

The idea was pretty simple ,not to

recreate the wheel but to help the

existing business support network by

opening doors into an entrepreneurial

and dynamic business community, but

one which could do with better

management and financial discipline.

One of ABDN’s great strengths is the

balance between communities that it

brings at all levels. ABDN continues to

prosper in tumultuous times as it has

never let go of its ethos of breaking

barriers, bringing communities together

and making a dierence. Corporate

Social Responsibility is high on the

ABDN agenda. and the opportunities

that we see for the future. We invite

you all to be part of them. So let us

revel in this great celebration and

inspiresuccess.

Arshad ChaudhryFounder ABDN

ABDN mission is to be the voice of business in the locality and a

driving force to support member’s productivity and profitability

in challenging global markets. We will achieve our mission and

objectives by Influencing key stakeholders at all levels, delivering

value added commercial services, promoting inter-trading through

networking and events. We will help businesses raise the skills and

competencies of their workforce, supporting enterprise and

entrepreneurship, whilst celebrating and promoting the success of

members and their contribution to their communities. Our vision is

to be recognised as the best Networking Organisation throughout

the UK by never foregoing our values that are:

. Inspirational and change orientated. Customer-focused and entrepreneurial. Trust and Integrity. Open and inclusive

The UK for the last three years has been in the midst of the

deepest recession this country has seen for many years.

It is claimed that we are now in a double dip recession,

however there is hope on the horizon that we may be clawing

our way out of the economic gloom, however for many businesses

it is getting tougher. As businesses have used their resources to

survive the recession, coping with the upturn can be treacherous.

Targeted support through Sheeld Hallam University, The Sheeld

City College and financial support from the banks supported by

Finance Yorkshire provides targeted Business Support to businesses

that can help them through these tumultuous times and it is important

that businesses have the right support available. That is why we are

proud to be associated with Wosskow Brown and Hentons Chartered

Accountants who provide dedicated support to businesses from a

legal and financial perspective.

The theme of our inaugural event is breaking barriers.

Minority communities have done well in business, but the vast majority

are still anchored within their comfort zones, inner city ghettos serving

their own communities. We need to break out and mainstream these

businesses. There is a big world out there, beyond our immediate

horizons. There are great opportunities even in recession both at home

and beyond. We must break these artificial barriers and venture beyond

our comfort zones. Ethnic Minority businesses have exceptional qualities,

entrepreneurial flair, hard work, integrity and a strong family support

network. These are key ingredients for success, harnessed and nurtured

we can become the driver for UK PLC coming out of the recession.

Looking across South Yorkshire and beyond we see rags to riches

stories around every corner. Many came to the UK without formal

education and no experience of running significant businesses,

creating enterprises, providing employment and bringing vibrancy

and colour to the economic scene. We celebrate these achievements

tonight of business men and women who have broken many barriers

and given our communities a great sense of pride and hope for the

future. ABDN aim is to work with businesses in the sub region and

beyond to make a dierence. Ethnic minority businesses have bucked

the trend and tough times faced have motivated these businesses on

to do more.

We are excited about the achievements of our business community

and the opportunities that we see for the future. We invite you all to

be part of them. So let us revel in this great celebration and

inspiresuccess.

It is a great honour and privilege to

welcome you to ABDBN 2013 Annual

dinner and Business Awards in South

Yorkshire.

The event over the years in Leeds has

broken many barriers to become an

inspirational extravaganza, and

celebrating achievements in our region.

We are fortunate to have the support of

our headline sponsors Goldman Sachs

10,000 Small Business programme as

well as other local sponsors for making

this event possible.

A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximiseimprovements in human and environmental well-being, rather than maximising profits forexternal shareholders.

Social enterprises can be structured as a for-profit or non-profit, and may take the form of aco-operative or mutual society, social business or charity.

Many commercial enterprises would consider themselves to have social objectives, but commitment to these objectives is motivated by the perception that such commitment will ultimately make the enterprise more financially valuable. Social enterprises dier in that they do not aim to oer any benefit to their investors, except where they believe that doing so will ultimately further their capacity to realize their social and environmental goals.

Sheeld Business School at Sheeld Hallam University regards social enterprise as a strategic imperative that enhances the well-being of the community through business action.

We oer enterprise support, short-courses, post-graduate degrees and research partnerships to help develop business expertise. We are delighted to sponsor the Social Enterprise of the Year award as this reflects the growing importance of this dynamic within all sectors.

HELPING BUILD BUSINESSESPRACTICAL ADVICE, NOT JUST LEGAL

In December 2012, Amy lost her wonderful little girl Sophie ina tragic accident, no one ever predicted that this could happen to them, it’s something that happens to someone else, somewhere else. Amy worst nightmare became her reality. Sophie was an amazing little girl therefore Amy and her family are determined that Sophie’s memory can be felt positively to support children who live with the injuries like Sophie’s and life’s challenges caused by burns.

Sophie’s Fund is part of the Sheeld Children’s Hospital Theo’s Burns club which provides opportunities for children who have been injured by a burn to help them to cometo terms with their painful injuries and treatment. The Burns Unit at Sheeld Children’s Hospital treats over 300 new children a year. The care children receive is complex and extremely painful with repeated surgery over many years. The long term eects of a burn injury are not just physical, the children have to learn to come to terms with their scarring and the eect that has on their school life and friendships.

The aim of Theo’s Burns Club is to enable the children to learn to deal with their scarring and treatment throughattending specialised camps where they can meet other children with burn injuries and take part in exciting activities, with health professionals providing expert support.

This is a local South Yorkshire charity supporting children through Sheeld Hospital, it’s not well resourced and every penny counts to continue to oer children support where often no other service is available outside of Sheeld and the South Yorkshire area.

The Children's Hospital, Sheeld is a Regional Burns Unit and takes children from as far north as Whitby, across to Hull and south to Chesterfield. We can also take children from across the country if there is a shortage of burns beds. We can accept children and young people with burn injuries up to 30% body surface area. We take all types of burn injury including chemical and electrical burns and skin loss conditions, and we have intensive care support if required. We also take infants with burns up to 30% depending on where and what their injuries are. For additional information please contact Lindsay Marris , Rebecca Tye or Kathryn Topham by email : [email protected].
