Aligners are NOT like Braces

Presented by Dr. Ken Fischer, DDS

Dr. Ken Fischer has been using clear aligners for comprehensive malocclusion corrections since early 2000.He has provided many educational and training presentations both domestically and internationally andpublished a number of aligner-related articles. He has also used a variety of clear aligner brands toexperience the product similarities and differences. He has served on the Invisalign Clinical Advisory Boardfor 13 years, and currently am a member of the ClearCorrect advisory board.

Many orthodontists assume since they know how to move teeth with braces that they can excel in movingteeth with aligners using the same mechanics and paradigms learned for wires and brackets. Not so…Thereis a learning journey that must be taken with clinical experience gathered along that pathway before theclinician earns proficiency that will yield successful treatment results with clear aligners. This lecture willexplain those new paradigms.

The GRAIL: Predictable Class II Correction with Aligner Therapy

Presented by Dr. Nick Salome, DDS, MSD

Dr. Nick Salome is a Board Certified orthodontist who brings a unique perspective to dental education. With20 years of experience in private practice and teaching at the University of Texas Health Science Center inSan Antonio, he is comfortable with the analysis of the latest dental research as well as recognizing its real-world clinical application. He has lectured worldwide on many orthodontic topics but focuses on estheticoptions for orthodontic treatment. Drawing from a wide background, he combines philosophy, psychology, and dentistry to elucidate the importance of orthodontic treatment in general and how we can make itbetter for our patients.

Class II correction with aligner therapy is difficult, but there is a misunderstanding as to why. It is notdifficult to plan treatment and hand out aligners, it is difficult to overcome the psychological barriers topatients wearing elastics when they do not want their orthodontic treatment to show. This difficulty iscompounded by the inability to identify in advance which patients will wear elastics from those who will not. This leaves the orthodontist struggling with a patient who will not allow treatment to be completed withoutfixing the overjet, but who is unwilling to wear elastics to make the correction. Aligner therapy can be mademore predictable (and enjoyable) if this dynamic is recognized, appreciated and if we can find ways to workaround the trap. This lecture will explain the underpinnings of the psychology around “loss aversion” andpresent a creative way to correct Class II malocclusions predictably with aligner therapy.

Ultra-Efficient and Cost-Effective Digital Workflow Systems forFabrication of In-House Aligners

Presented by Dr. Edward Lin, DDS, MS

Dr. Lin received both his dental (DDS) andorthodontic (MS) degrees from Northwestern University Dental School. OSGB and ACO are all completelydigital practices and have been utilizing intraoral scanning and SureSmile since February of 2004 at threedifferent practice locations for labial, lingual, and aligner treatments. All practices have been involved withcone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with the iCAT since 2005. In-House 3D printing has beenincorporated since 2014 and all practices have been impression free for over 5 years. In-House alignertherapy is an important part of all practices, having treated over 1200 aligner cases in 2019. Dr Lin is aninternationally recognized speaker, has written several articles that have been published in a wide variety ofdental journals, and has lectured at several orthodontic residency programs across the world. He is a Facultyand Clinical Advisory Board Member for SureSmile. He is also a Key Opinion Leader for AmericanOrthodontics, Imaging Sciences International, Envision TEC, and Hu-Friedy. He is a past member of theAmerican Association of Orthodontist’s Committee on Technology and is on the Editorial Board ofOrthoTown and Orthodontic Practice journals. In his lecture, Dr. Lin will share with the audience his experiences treating his patients over the past 21 yearswith aligners (Invisalign, OrthoClear, SureSmile, 3D Smiles, and uLab) in his 3 practices. He will also discussand review how OSGB and ACO have setup an ultra-efficient and cost-effective digital orthodontic lab forfabrication of all aligners and orthodontic appliances in-house. Their efficient digital workflow systems havegiven all five doctors the ability to treat all patients with a hybrid solution for treatment with labial, lingual, and aligner combination treatment options. Most importantly, this has led to incredibly happy patientswhere esthetic treatment is of the utmost importance and with continued year after year growth of theirpractices!!!
