European Café Culture

During the final week of the summer term, Year 7 and Year 8 pupils were immersed in European Café culture

during their MFL lessons, which gave them the opportunity to showcase some of the language learnt during the

year. Pupils were customers, waiting staff and chefs and were tasked with acting out a scene at a cafe/restaurant.

We had so much fun whilst also developing some real life language skills. Well done all! A lovely end to a fantastic

year in the MFL Dept.

Student Leaders 2019-20 Hit The Ground Running

The new cohort of Student Leaders have started the academic year with a bang. Egglescliffe

School can now recycle some products that the local councils can’t! By teaming up with

Terracycle, Garnier and Bic we can now recycle any pens or highlighters that have run out

or your beauty regime products. What’s even better is that the more we recycle, the more

money we raise for the school’s charities. Anyone can use these facilities so just bring them

along to Reception and there is a box there that you can put them in. This is just another

example of how Egglescliffe is consciously

broadening the understanding of our

students and actively reflecting upon their

lifestyle choices as part of our Climate

Change Education Program.

Cranedale – Year 12 Residential Field Trip July 2019

29 A Level Biology

students, along with

Mrs Gerrard, Mrs

Powell and Mr Green

visited the Cranedale

Field Studies Centre in

the last week of the

summer term to

complete some

Biology practical work.

The students enjoyed

river sampling (and

catching giant

crayfish), exploring a

disused quarry for different plants and butterflies, laying overnight traps and cameras for nocturnal animals (and

catching Mr Green’s dad dancing) and investigating the effect of salt water on seashore organisms (which

included laughing at Mrs Gerrard trying to navigate the slippery rocks).

We were blessed with great weather and the students and staff all had a great time.

Young Engineering Club

The launch of Egglescliffe School’s “Young Engineering Club” has caused a lot of

excitement amongst our students. It enables students to work alongside

employees from some of the UKs top STEM businesses, who are local to the Tees

Valley area, on a variety of projects that students can choose to participate in.

Students applied for the

projects, explaining why they

feel they should be considered for a place within the Club,

and they will be interviewed by a panel of employers to give

the students a chance to showcase their passion and

enthusiasm.

The projects are a great way for students to build and

develop key skills required to work within the industry,

whilst gaining invaluable knowledge and understanding of

the world of STEM directly from the employers. We’re very

much looking forward to the results of their hard work, and

in some cases competing in tournaments against other

students from all around the country.

National Citizen Service - Summer 2019.

A large proportion of last year’s Year 11 students took part in the NCS programme

throughout the summer holiday.

What is it?

NCS is a four-phase programme specifically designed to provide you with all sorts of

new experiences. Whether you’re a daredevil or a creative genius, talkative or more reserved, you’ll be surprised

by how much you’re actually capable of, coming away with a host of new skills and bags of confidence. If you want

to boost your UCAS statement or CV, meet incredible people, get your voice heard and have a lot of fun while

you’re at it, then NCS is for you.

Our current Year 11 students will be getting information about next summer’s NCS programme within the next

couple of months, but if you would like to find out more now, please go to

www.ncsyes.co.uk

Here are some of our student’s views on their experience:

“This was possibly my best summer spent as a teenager, I had so many good

moments playing Uno, spontaneously bursting into song and having a good

laugh with my friends. I felt so loved and wanted in the presence of everyone.

You end up making so many deep connections with so many people and you will

never get any time to yourself. Although this was very stressful and

overwhelming to not have any privacy, it was nice to always have people to talk

to and laugh with. One of my favourite moments was when we were in the rock

pools swimming around and we suddenly erupted into a choir of Rick Astley’s

“Never Gonna Give You Up” and that moment will live on in my heart forever. I

love my friends and NCS allowed me to constantly be around them.” SG, Year

12.

“I went on my NCS experience in summer 2019. It consisted of two weeks

away and another two at home but we could meet up every day as a group and put together ideas for our Social

Action project, which would take place on our fourth week. I only knew one person so I had to put myself in the

position of talking and interacting with new people. I found myself being put into new situations which helped with

my confidence and determination. One of the activities on the first week was kayaking. We ended up playing

football in the canoe-like boats and we all jumped in the water at the end.

The people there make it even better and I wouldn’t hesitate to take the

opportunity of doing NCS again.” Year 12 student.

“NCS for me was undeniably one of the greatest activities I have ever

done. It was something that I honestly believe will help me in the future

and will give me an advantage over other non NCS candidates. In my

opinion, NCS allowed me to be a better person as it developed my

interpersonal qualities and will give me the confidence to speak in public. It

was a mixture of emotions from being petrified during abseiling to being

ecstatic over my hard work during social action. It was a place where you

can build on your personality and make friends along the way. I know that

NCS has made me a better person. I’m very grateful for the opportunity

that Egglescliffe School gave me in allowing me to partake!” UZ, Year 12

Year 10 Forensic Scientists On Monday, 23rd September a group of Year 10 students had the opportunity to broaden their horizons by learning about the world of Forensic Science. Dressed in their white suits they identified bones, learnt how to take fingerprints and collected evidence from a 'real' crime scene in the Science Department. A huge thank you to our guest for inspiring our students and to everyone who supported the event. “I learnt lots of things such as how to collect fingerprints. The best part was the practical side of it.” “This experience was new to me but I found it very interesting. It expanded my knowledge into the field of forensics.” “I found this really interesting and intriguing to know what happens at a crime scene and all the different people who help to solve crimes.”
