Dear Parents and Community members,
Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive
allergic reacon that is potenally life
threatening. The most common allergens in
school aged children are peanuts, eggs, tree
nuts (e.g. cashews), cow’s milk, fish and
shellfish, wheat, soy, sesame and certain
insect venom (parcularly bee sngs).
Last week, as a result of an anaphylacc
reacon, a staff member had to use an
EpiPen as part of an emergency response.
Two preventave strategies that we
connually emphasise with students and
parents are:
• Do not send food to school that may have
anaphylacc triggers
• Do not share food.
Both of the above were the cause of this
reacon. Fortunately, the student has
recovered. I urge you; however, to
connually bear these two preventave
strategies in mind and reinforce them with
your children. I would like to thank the staff
involved for their quick and calm response.
Japanese Exchange Program
The Japanese Exchange program ended this
week. It was a pleasure to have the five
exchange students at our school. Last Friday,
we were treated to a cultural dance at our
assembly. It was amazing. My thanks to the
host families who made this possible.

Class Placement 2018
The total enrolment of the school determines
the salary component of our overall budget
and in turn the deployment of staff to
classrooms. Your child’s placement is dictated
by this. Where the year groups are unevenly
distributed (which is most schools) reasonable
class sizes can only be maintained by the
formaon of a certain number of composite
classes. There will be composite classes at
Mount Pleasant in 2018. Many parents tend
to be concerned about their child being in a
composite class. Please note however, that
straight classes have as many working groups
as composite classes. In any case, teachers at
Mount Pleasant Primary School do not deliver
the Curriculum at one year level. The priority
focus is to differenate the Curriculum so that
all students are targeted.
Students are placed into classes a>er due
consideraon and review of their
development across all Learning Areas. We
also consider:
• The ability to work with certain peer
groups
• Ability to work independently
• The need to have children working at their
own ability level.
Please do not approach teachers to request
placements of your child. Individual teachers
are not in posion to do this and it places
them in an uncomfortable situaon. If there is
something of an urgent nature that I should be
aware of, please let me know directly.
Outstanding Charges
Thank you to the many parents who have
responded to our messages regarding
outstanding charges. The outstanding figure
has decreased significantly. I urge the
remaining parents to finalise any outstanding
charges.

Teaching Sustainability Through Art
Earlier this year the whole school made large
red poppies for ANZAC day. We used two full
reams of red paper. Unfortunately, almost
one ream became scrap paper as the petals
were large and didn’t fill the page. This week
the students have recycled that “waste”
paper to create their own handmade paper.

TACT
Being tacNul is telling
the truth, but in such a
way that no one is
offended. It is knowing
when to say something
and when it is beJer to
be silent. When you are
tacNul you handle other
people’s feelings
carefully. You don't say
things that will make
them feel embarrassed.
Treat their feelings the
way you would want
your feelings to be
treated.

Christmas Hampers Another wonderful community-minded tradition we have at M.P.P.S. is the collection of food hampers in the lead up to Christmas. The hampers will be presented at our Carols Assembly in week 9, and will be a blessing to those who are struggling around our city at Christmas time. If you would like to donate, there will be a box in each classroom where items can be placed. Non-perishable food items, festive Christmas food, decorations and gifts would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your kind support. NEXT CAKE STALL - Thursday 9th November. A variety of delicious goodies will be for sale at lunchtime. Prices usually range from 50c to $2. Funds raised support our MPPS 5 Cents Challenge - supporting education projects amongst poor communities around the world.
Congratulations to the following students who received Honour Certificates for Week 3:
