SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 6 DEC. 2020

Saint Juan Diego Little is known of the early life of Juan Diego, whose original name was Cuauht-latoatzin (“the Talking Eagle”). Although he described himself as poor, he may have meant poor in spirit; it has been suggested that he was an Aztec prince. He was married but had no children. When he was 50 years old, he and his wife were among the first indigenous people to accept baptism and convert to Christianity after its introduc-tion to Mexico by Spanish conquistadors and missionaries. According to tradition, Juan Diego experienced his first vision of the Virgin Mary on December 9, 1531. While on his way to mass, he was visited by Mary, who was sur-rounded in heavenly light, on Tepeyac Hill on the outskirts of what is now Mexico City. She spoke to him in his native lan-guage and asked him to tell the bishop to build a shrine to her on the hill. The bishop did not believe Juan Diego’s story and asked for proof that Mary had appeared to him. On December 12, while searching for a priest to administer last rites to his uncle, Juan Diego was visited by Mary again. He told her of the bishop’s answer, and she instructed him to gather roses and take them to the bishop as a sign. She also informed Juan Diego that his uncle would recover from his illness. Juan Die-go found many roses on the hill even though it was winter. When he opened his tilma (cloak) while appearing before the bishop, dozens of roses fell out, and an image of Mary, im-printed on the inside of his cloak, became visible. Having re-ceived his proof, the bishop ordered that a church be built on Tepeyac Hill in honour of the Virgin. Juan Diego returned home and found his uncle’s health restored. For the rest of his life Juan Diego lived in a hut next to the church built in honor of Mary and took care of the pil-grims who came to the shrine. He was buried in the church, and his tilma can still be seen in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. His existence, which had been questioned by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, was confirmed by the Vati-can, and Juan Diego was beatified on May 6, 1990, and can-onized on July 31, 2002, by Pope John Paul II. Numerous miracles have been attributed to him, and he remains one of the most popular and important saints in Mexico. Prayer: O St. Juan Diego, in appearances of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe, you, a humble peasant, were chosen as Her messenger. Your faithfulness in this task is evident still today, in the miraculous image the Virgin left upon your tilma. Intercede for me, I pray, that I might have your childlike trust in the Mother of God, and that my heart might respond to her maternal promptings. Through such simple confidence, obedience, and love, may I join you one day in sharing everlasting joy, where our heavenly Mother reigns in the glory of Her Son. Amen

St. Nicholas, Patron Saint of Children. Pray for them.

Saint Nicholas was born circa 280 in Patara, Lycia, an area that is part of present-day Turkey. He lost both of his parents as a young man and reportedly used his inheritance to help the poor and sick. A devout Christian, he later served as bishop of Myra. There are many legends about Saint Nicholas of Myra. One story tells how he helped three poor sisters. Their father did not have enough money to pay their dowries and thought of selling them into ser-vitude. Three times, Saint Nicholas secretly went to their house at night and put a bag of money inside. The man used the money so that one of his daughters could marry. On the third visit, the man saw Saint Nicholas and thanked him for his kindness. He also reportedly saved three men who were falsely imprisoned and sentenced to death. Sev-eral sources state Saint Nicholas is believed to have died on December 6, 343. Over the years, stories of his miracles and work for the poor spread to other parts of the world. He became known as the protector of children and sailors and was associated with gift-giving.

The Roof

The premade trusses for the roof of the garage arrived on

Friday the 20th. The director of the Construction company

was here to receive them. The first two bays of the garage

were emptied out on Saturday and the third was emptied on

Monday by Paul Garriepy and Stephen Garrepy. On the

VERY rainy Monday two men from the Construction Com-

pany arrived to check the site and shore up the severely

damaged roof so that it could be worked on Tuesday. As I

write these words the old roof has been removed and the

trim is also being removed. The wood was found to be ex-

tremely rotted. The debris from this work filled the rest of

the second dumpster and the unit that Coutnoir Construc-

tion Co. had brought with them. With the onset of the Co-

rona Virus and the increase of at-home

DIY the prices have increase to the point

where 2 X 4’s have gone from about $2.50

in March to $5.60 in November. This has

necessitated a price increase. The cost of

the work on the roof now stands at

$18,200.00 for all work and materials. We

are also looking at the trim which should be done and the

electrical system to make the doors and the electrical sockets

fully functional. Any donations towards this project should

indicate in writing either in a note or in the memo line of the

check. If all goes well it will also serve as a temporary place

for coffee hours until the Parish Center is built.

How to Help Holy Name Holy Name is seen as a unique Parish in the Dio-cese of Providence. She is looked upon by many as a re-flection of the Catholic Church spread through out the world. Here the Mysteries of the Church are celebrated: Children become Sons and Daughters of God in Baptism; we are raised up from our sins in the Sacrament of Confes-sion; fed on the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist; joined for Salvation in Matrimony; empowered by God in Holy Orders to confect the Sacraments as the spiritual Fa-ther of those confided to the priest’s care and comforted by the Anointing when in poor health. Planned giving allows donors to make a difference by enabling our Parish to carry on the work of Christ in this unique way. Although very few are blessed with the re-sources to make large gifts regularly, there are, fortunately, many other ways to help in a special way! Automatic monthly contributions

As it was men-tioned in last week bul-letin our youth were able to prepare 12 bas-

kets that were given to some of our Parishioners asking for assistance. They also prepared 15 baskets that were donated to assist fami-lies through Crossroads. May God bless our youth for their energy and initiative!

Catechism News!!!

A year ago, when your children received confirmation, we had no way of knowing that our traditional Corpus Christi procession would have to be canceled due to the pandem-ic. Traditionally, at the end of the Corpus Christi procession, Father presents each of the Confirmandi with a Confirmation certificate and a Bible. We hope that we will be able to resume our normal celebrations this spring and would invite all of the young people confirmed in November 2019 to participate. In the interim, Father would like the young people to receive their certificates and Bibles. On Sunday, December 13th, following the 9AM, the 11AM and the 12:30PM masses, Father will make presentations to last year’s Confirmandi and this years First Communicants. Please mark this date on your calendar and we look forward to seeing you at Holy Name on December 13th. If you are unable to attend mass on this day, please contact the rectory to dis-cuss alternative arrangements for obtaining your child’s materials. God Bless,

Egypt: Hundreds of Muslims attack Church, Christians’ homes over Facebook post

By Anugrah Kumar, Sun, Nov 29, 2020 A mob of Muslim villagers attacked the homes and shops of Coptic Christians in Egypt’s Min-ya governorate over rumors that a Christian man had posted a comment denigrating Islam on Facebook, according to reports. At least one elderly woman was hospitalized for burns suffered in the fire in her home after groups close to Islamist groups used stones and Molotov cocktails to target the Coptic Ortho-dox community in al Barsha Thurs-day, according to Independent Catholic News. The man accused of posting the comment against Islam on his personal Facebook account said that his page had been hacked. The mob also tried to attack the church of Abou Sefin, where the congregation was celebrating

the beginning of the Coptic fast. Mourners carry crosses and march after the funeral of Cop-tic Christians who were killed on Friday in Min-

ya, Egypt.
