PRODUCT DISASSEMBLY LABORATORY REPORT

DISASSEMBLY PROCESS STEPS

1. A CD-ROM DRIVE WAS CHOSEN BY THE TEAM AS THE ELECTRONIC DEVICE TO BE DISASSEMBLED.

2. THE NECESSARY TOOLS WERE OBTAINED (3 SMALL PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWDRIVERS, 1 MULTI-TOOL W/ FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER & A SMALL PAIR OF LONG NOSED PLIERS) FOR TAKING APART CD-ROM DRIVE.

3. 4 SMALL SILVER METAL SCREWS WERE REMOVED FROM METAL BOTTOM PLATE.

4. OUTER CASING WAS SEPARATED FROM DEVICE.

5. TOP CASING OF DEVICE WAS PRIED OFF USING A FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER FROM MULTI-TOOL.

6. PLASTIC FACEPLATE WAS PRIED OFF WITH THE SAME METHOD AS PREVIOUS STEP.

DISASSEMBLY PROCESS STEPS

7. 4 SMALLER BLACK METAL SCREWS WERE REMOVED FROM A RECTANGULAR DULL SILVER METAL PLATE (CD READER) CONTAINING THE LASER COMPONENTS.

8. THE CD READER PLATE WAS SEPARATED FROM THE DEVICE.

9. THE CD READER PLATE CONTAINED ONE SMALL SILVER SCREW THAT WOULD NOT LOOSEN. SCREW WAS PRIED OFF USING A LARGER FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER.

10. 4 VERY SMALL METAL SCREWS WERE REMOVED FROM COMPONENT FOR FURTHER DISASSEMBLY.

11. THE CIRCUIT BOARD WAS SEPARATED FROM CD-DRIVE WITH FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER.

12. THE CIRCUIT BOARD WAS DISASSEMBLED INTO 2 SECTIONS.

13. THE SMALLER CIRCUIT BOARD SECTION CONTAINS A SMALL MOTOR. MOTOR WAS REMOVED BY FLIPPING OVER THE SECTION AND DISCONNECTING A PLUG & WIRE FROM A 2- PRONGED CONNECTOR.

14.THE VOLUME DIAL & HEADPHONE JACK ON THE SMALLER SECTION WERE ATTACHED WITH A GLUE AND RIVET METHOD SO THESE WERE NOT REMOVED.

15.THE INFORMATION TAPE CONNECTING THE CIRCUIT BOARD SECTIONS TOGETHER WAS DETACHED WITH A SLIGHT TUG.

16.THE PLASTIC CASE OF THE DEVICE WAS FURTHER DISASSEMBLED INTO 2 SMALLER SECTIONS.

17.ONE SECTION CONTAINED A SMALL BLACK REMOVABLE PLASTIC CD TRAY HOLDER THAT WAS EASILY LIFTED OUT BY PRYING THE SIDES WITH THE FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER.

18.THE FRONT OF THIS PLASTIC TRAY CONTAINED A THIN BLACK RUBBER BAND AND GEAR PULLEY MECHANISM. THE 2 PLASTIC GEARS WERE PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO THE TRAY BUT THE BAND WAS SEPARATED FROM THE PULLEY.

19.INVENTORY OF PARTS WAS PERFORMED WHILE TOXICITY/HEALTH RISK ISSUES WERE ASSESSED & RESEARCHED VIA INTERNET.

20.DISASSEMBLED COMPONENTS AND SURROUNDING WORK AREA WAS CLEANED.

disc in place)10. 1 circuit board w/ microchips (includes small

detachable motor with female connector)11. 1 metal screw to hold CD reader (4 small

metal screws with 4 rubber stoppers)12. 2 small silver metal rods to hold CD

reader/writer head13. 1 laser eye (held by 8 small black metal

screws)14. 1 black cylindrical rotating CD holder15. 2 small copper brackets (held in by 2 small

silver screws)16. 1 larger white plastic laser eye component17. 1 small motor attached to a positioning

sensor and brass calibrating rod

DISASSEMBLY BILL OF MATERIALS

SHARP EDGES ON METAL BOTTOM PLATE & CIRCUIT BOARD COULD CAUSE MINOR CUTS IF PROPER CARE IS NOT TAKEN.

OTHER THAN SHARP CORNERS, DEVICE IS NOT HAZARDOUS TO TOUCH.

SEVERAL INTERNET SEARCHES PROVED INCONCLUSIVE REGARDING HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN PLASTIC PARTS, CIRCUITS, SOLDER, WIRES, METALS, OR GEAR LUBRICANTS.

TOXIC ISSUES ARE CURRENTLY NON-EXISTENT WITH THIS DEVICE DUE TO POOR WEB DOCUMENTATION OF INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS’ CHEMICAL COMPOSITION.

DISASSEMBLY RISK ASSESSMENT!

GREEN ASPECTS

PLASTICS COULD BE RECYCLED IF DEVICE WAS DISASSEMBLED TO COMPONENT LEVEL.

METAL SCREWS & METAL PARTS COULD BE RETURNED TO COMPANY FOR RECYCLING.
