~~~~ f(u)21 Reviewby Ross Booth
Since the Fosters brothers brewed thefirst distinctive Australian lager in 1888the fame of Australia's favourite beerhas grown around Australia and aroundthe world .
Foster's was first exported to SouthAfrica during the Boer war. TO day youcan get a Foster's from Baghdad toBangkok, San Francisco to Singapore .
It's by far the biggest sellingAustralian beer in Britain .
One of the top 10 selling imports inthe U.S.A.
Sold in every Australian state,Foster's outsells every other Australianbrand of beer .
Ormond's winning run of 6 matches was ended by Old Scotch when they inflicted an 8 pointdefeat on the 'Monds' . Scotch stamped themselves as a premiership threat with the win over thesection leader in a closely contested and low-scoring game . John Moir marked strongly aroundthe ground for the Cardinals and Brian Hodge was elusive on the half forward flank . Ormond'sbest were Paul Sutherland on the wing and ruck-rover Phil Mehrten .
St . Bernards scored an upset win overIvanhoe by 35 points and in so doing movedback out of the relegation zone . The loss putsIvanhoe down to 6th place . The Saints werevery much more desperate and effectively wonthe game in the second quarter with a 10 goalburst. Ivanhoe fought back in the last term butit was far too late . Greg Lane kicked 4 goals forthe Saints, but their best was giant ruckmanPaul Smith .
Collegians scored a comfortable 39 point winover Bulleen-Templestowe which effectivelyends the Bullants chances of playing in thefinals . Collegians won the game in the thirdquarter after an even first half when theyoutscored Bulleen by 4 goals to 3 into thebreeze . Geoff English kicked 4 goals andJeremy Schmidt dominated in the air on hisr~ing . Bulleen-Temp have been weakened bythe loss of Andy Smythe to Melbourne andStephen Clark to Essendon . Even coach MikeZemski's 1 goal was not enough to lift theBullants to victory!
North Old Boys had a good 23 point win overUniversity Blues to take themselves back intothe four. North had a good third quarter withthe breeze but kicked inaccurately : 4 .8, andtheir back line held Blues to a miserable 2goals to three quarter time . Key defendersConsidine and Griffin were grand defenders .
Blues best were new boy Anthony Allen in thecentre and Simon Macaulay on the forwardflank. Blues are now back in the hot seat facingrelegation .
De La Salle humiliated Old Xaverians by 76points . Xavs were held goalless till half timeand kicked only 2 goals for the day, thanks toNick Wilton . De La forward Tony Vitacca kicked4 goals and he and Pat Maher were providedmany opportunities by ruckman BrianHanrahan . For Xavs Peter Klein batt led hardagainst Mick Deveson, and Geoff Greethamheld Phil Kerin to 2 goals .
The likely winners in A Section are :Bulleen-Templestowe v DE LA SALLESt . Bernards v COLLEGIAN SORMOND v Ivanho eUniversity Blues v OLD SCOTCHOld Xaverians v NORTH O B
I have tipped 4 away winners in A Sectionbut I am confident because I tipped the card inB Section last week . all home sides .
In B Section :Old Brighton v MARCELLINST. KILDA v Old MelburniansKewv UNIVERSITY BLACKSOLD PARADIANS v AjaxCAULFIELD GRAM . v Parksid e
FAWKNER CONGRATULATES MITCHWell done Gret Mitchell upon your selection
in the V .A .F .A . state team. Greg was selected toplay against NSW in the combined C & F gradeside at the recent carnival . A product of theUnder 19s Mitch is in his second year of seniorfootball, having been runner up, in his firstsenior year, in the club's best and fairest .Selection in the state team is further proof ofhis progress as a player well known for hisdynamic non-stop approach to the game . Keepit up Mitch, you know our next aim .
Page 3: A SECTION - VAFA
Ivanhoe Amateurs you blew it! A great chance to cement a place in the final 4 and seriouslychallenge for Premiership honors and you couldn't handle it . There is no doubting the value ofrelegation and promotion . What could well have been a meaningless match became a battle forsurvival for St . Bernard's and they responded magnificently . I couldn't for the life of me understandwhy Alan Salter left his best player and skipper Peter Gittos at full back for 3 quarters . Sure Gittoswas there to mind Greg Lane but I*d have thought Gittos would have been better at say centre halfback thus reducing the opportunities Lane had . When he was sent onto the ball in the last term hereally had an input on the game but by then it was too late .
Although Ormond lowered its colours as Isort of pointed to Old Scotch last week, I won'thear of them losing 2 in a row especially asthey meet amateur football's latest pretenders .Ormond are now only a game clear of the twobig improvers in A Section, Old Scotch andCollegians and must ensure the double chanceif it is to be the premier team this season . Idoubt if Ivanhoe has the discipline, class orability to match it with Ormond for whomM ichael Oaten kicked 6 important goals in theReserves last week .
As De La Salle is poised in 5th position andonly 1 percent behind, North O.B. has morethan enough incentive to pull out all stopsagainst the Old Xaverians whose form of late isjust woeful .
Xavs could only manage 2 goals last weekwhilst North as expected was an impressivewinner against the Blues . The bottom has reallyfallen out of Old Xaverians for whom the next 5weeks cannot pass quickly enough .
St. Bernards cock full of confidence after itsupset win over Ivanhoe believe they can doCollegians and pull themselves well clear ofrelegation . I don't. Collegians has a pretty usefuloutfit at present and has even learn't the art ofwinning away from Harry Trott. Its small menwill worry St . Bernards and with a dominantcentre line led by young Jeremy SchmidtCollegians greater ability will give them thepoints .
Bulleen-Templestowe has one last remotechance and it must beat De La Salle to maintainit . De La has enjoyed having its back to the walland has responded, as those who have followedamateur football in the past decade have cometo expect, with deeds and actions on the field .With a place in the 4 beckoning, De La, even inits red guernsey, will have all the answers andby winning today will remind North, Collegians,and Old Scotch that it is far from a spent force .Uni. Blues host Old Scotch who are still up inthe air over the win against Ormond . Blues willbe desperate following St . Bernard's surprisewin and I've a hunch they'll catch the Cardinalson the hop and cause the upset of the seasonin winning today .
So its Ormond, De La Salle, North OB,Collegians and Uni . Blues .
AJAX won its second match of the seasonlast week against a disappointing Kew who tookthe surprise decision of sacking coach RaySleeth in the week before the match . There'ssomething wrong at Kew and even at home
where they produce by far their best football-theythey are simply not in the class of Uni . Blackswho are out to prove they're the best side outof the 4 . It would be a fairy tale finish for theBlacks to play in the finals and I'm sure thecurrent 4 who I believe will remain will be morethan happy for the Blacks to finish fifth .
Old Paradians who put up a creditableperformance against Parkside will need to beon their mettle for the vital match against AJAX .Success breeds success and if AJAX get thesniff of another victory, they'll prove hard totoss, even at Bundoora . However having takenthe Blues as a long shot in A section I must gofor the Old Paradians whose victory will givethem a very handy 6 point lead over Kew in thebatle for relegation .
Caulfield Grammarians finds itself in thematch of the day for the second week in a row.They were disgraceful last week againstMarcellin and did not look like a top side . Thisgame will be a ripper and Parkside will relishthe small Albert Park oval and with the big manstrength to match Caulfield, I think by Saturdaynight we'll have a 3way tie at the head of Bsection and the "fields" may fall from first tothird .
St . Kilda has its last chance to stay in the Bsection finals race with a home game against4th placed Old M eiburnians . O.M's hold a handy6 point margin and will be hard pressed to keepit . The Saints will literally throw everything intothis last effort and O .M .'s may be found wanting .I think that at home St . Kilda can win and keepthe interest in 4th spot wide open . You can besure the Blacks will be sweating on the result .
In the remaining match in B Section Marcellintake the trip south to meet Old Brighton whoserecord at home compares favourably with thatof its visitor . Old Brighton has done well in Bsection and had Peter Grant and othersremained injury free and available on a regularbasis, then the bay side lads would be higherup the B section ladder . With the possibility oftop place as the prize I can't see Neil LeLievreallowing any of those young eagles to go intothis game with swollen heads and its a Marcellinvictory for mine .
What a competition C Section is turning outto be . A draw in a desparate finish betweenMonash and Hampton Rovers, predictable winsby Fawkner and Therry and Thomastown vitalaway win at Old Camberwell means that 4th-place is still wide open and there is no shortageof challengers .
4THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1985
Today Therry meet Banyule at Therry andthc home side are mighty firm favourites . Thebattle of the coaches, both amateur footballlegends in their own lifetime, Bernie Dunn andRick Brockweli will decide the game - Dunn isseen as the cool tactitian whilst 'Brocky' is acrreat on field leader and deep thinker on thegame. As Banyule's form has been hot and coldI'll stick with the more consistent Therry .
St . Kevins are at home to Old Camberwell,,rid despite its loss to Fawkner is still in with achance . A win today will bring St. Kevins equal;Jth their opponents and surely that is enoughincentive ,
tti Oval to score a wground advantage ofRigThomastown who were in the horrors have
rallied and their important victory last Saturdayover Old Camberwell lifted them temporarilyout of relegation worries . At home they shouldbeat Hampton Rovers and move even furtherclear and it wouldn't surprise me if they were tosneak 4th spot before its all over .
Old Haileybury has that quality whichcommittee and supporters love but doesn't winmatches - potential . They might use it today tobeat and stay within striking distance and at thesame time drive a big nail into M onash .
No one would pick Coburg to beat Fawkner .Its last versus first so that enough said .` Match of the round in D Section will be playedat Melbourne High between the home side andthe undefeated leaders, Old Trinity . In whatpromises to be a great game I'm confident thatthe High school at home can inflict the first lossof the season on Trinity and really hot up thebattle for premiership honors . Trinity will notenjoy the small ground which would probablyfittwice into their own and Alan Quaife is boundto have his charges fired up .
Balaclava should restore some lost groundby beating an eratic Old Ivanhoe and NorthBrunswick who went down narrowly to OldMentonians last Saturday are the selection overold rivals Power House . Its hard to see StateBank worrying Old M entonians who are quietly
confident of promotion, and West Brunswickwill return to the winning list at the expense ofpoor old St. Bedes .
Old Geelong journey to Preston where theywill confront a side determined to avenge itsloss last week. The Oggs face a third loss in arow and couldn't have drawn Preston at a worsetime .
The big game of course will be played at Mt .Eliza between Peninsula and Heatherton .Heatherton played well last Saturday to beatPreston as did the Pirates who beat BulleenUnited . With 4th spot a little more secure I thinkthe Pirates will win this match although I agreethat Heatherton are favourites.
Williamstown cyms will move a step closerand boost its percentage by accounting for OldCarey and Uni . Reds at home should make ittwo in a row by beating Footscray Tech .
The other match is between Elsternwick andBulleen United and in a real test of strengthElsternwick has both the form, enthusiasm andsuperior knowledge of the No . 2 oval to carrythe day .
Commonwealth Bank who survived a strongChallenge last Saturday from Brunswick will bein the right form and be far too slick for OldEssendon . The Dons let Clayton kick 8 goals inthe last quarter and threw away a golden chanceto cement 4th spot .
Brunswick as mentioned was far fromdisgraced last Saturday and today will carry allbefore them against ANZ Bank. Uni . High whoare a bit like Old Haileybury - full of potentialwill also be able to use it today at Latrobe andI'm sure they'll win well .
The big match is between two of "far eastern"clubs Clayton and Doveton . Clayton came frombehind to beat Old Essendon whilst Dovetonhad the bye . The let off may not have been theideal way to prepare for such a big game atClayton its the Dragons for me .
I went pretty well last Saturday picking 22winners . How many did you get?
And still the stories filter from Mildura . OTFlearns that 2 honorary team officials were leftbehind at the ground after the match! The hardworking Team manager having eventuallyrounded up the team set sail for the aftermatchentertainment and completely overlooked theproperty-steward and time keeper. As thetimekeeper was a former team mate, themanager was most embarrassed .
® o • ® A of Fate?by Jim Fidg e
It is perhaps an interesting note to start on the background of L .A . Adamson, father and guidingfigure of the Victorian Amateur Football Association, during the first 40 years of its now 93 yearsof existence .
Perhaps it was a twist of fate that really inspired him to create the V .A.F .A .Adamson, born 125 years ago on the Isle of Man, was educated at Rugby School, and after
graduating in Law at Oxford University, came to Australia in 1887 . While waiting to be admitted tothe Victorian Bar, he accepted a position as senior house master at Wesley College . His lawcareer was shelved and there followed an outstanding career of community involvement . His basewas Wesley, the club he founded was Collegians and that club has remained the only club to bepart of the V .A .F .A . throughout its entire existence .
History tells us that the V .A .F .A . (originallythe Metropolitan Junior Football Associationuntil Geelong joined in 1927 and the titlechange was introduced) was formed before theV .F .A . breakaway that saw the creation of theVictorian Football League . The V.A .F .A . enjoyeda healthy relationship with the V .F .L . in theearly years. Amateur finals games were playedas curtain-raisers to V .F .L . final games at theM .C .G. However, the V .F.L . were attempting tobuild the Amateur clubs into their own zonesand Adamson and his supporters saw this as adefinite threat to the concept of amateurism .Adamson had a strong committment to retainsport as sport .
It was along this concept that the V .A .F .A .was rr,ou!ded and developed to become thelargest individual football competition in thecountry .
The V.A .F .A has always retained its earlyprinciples while going through enormous expan-sion and development of new innovations tothe game . All was not smooth sailing - therewere set backs, for example two World Warsthat necessitated disbandment .
SOUND AD M INISTRATIONA dedicated and innovative administration has
always provided a sound basis for V .A .F .A. pro-gress. There have been only eight Presidents :W.H. Davis (1894-95 No records for 1892-3) ;L .A . Adamson (1896-1915 :1920-32) ; H.J . Stew-art (1933-1940 : 1946 ; E .F . Atkins (1947-1969) ;L.S. Zachariah (1970-77) ; M .G . Russel (1978-80) ; T .A . Johnson (1981-83) and J .F .X . Dillon(1984-85) . This has provided a firm leadershipbase and included in the long serving featureof the V .A .F .A . have been such long servingpersonalities as Jack Fullerton, Secretary from1952-1977, the late Jack McCann, a formerSecretary who served the V .A .F .A with distinc-tion for over 50 years, and the still serving Vice-President, Fred Coldrey, who had completed50 years as a member of the Executive Comm-ittee . George McTaggart became an institutionwith the Amateur Footballer, while Noel Rundlehas guided the financial affairs for the past 20years . Lou Zachariah, Manson Russel, AlexJohnson and John Dillon all went on to becomePresident, but always the administration had afine blend of experience with youth .
MILESTONESOver the years the V .A .F .A . has progressed
to a number of headquarters in an attempt toestablish a permanent identity and venue forfinals matches. The first was the old AmateurSports Ground (Olympic Park - which becamethe topic of a wrangle over professional use inthe 1930's) the other Olympic Park oval, theJunction Oval, St. Kilda, and then by the mid-1960's ; Elsternwick Park .
No man worked harder for the developmentof Elsternwick Park into the now outstandingheadquarters it is for the V.A .F .A than AlexJohnson . As a fitting reward for his tirelessendeavours to see the long awaited "dream" ofa pavilion materialise, the Brighton City Councilopited to name it "The Alex . Johnson Pavilion".It was opened by councillor Len Coysh Mayorof Brighton in 1983, Our Paton-in-chief, HisExcellency the Governor of Victoria, Sir BrianMurray, was a guest at the luncheon . The latestdevelopment as part of the Elsternwick Parkprogress is a new electronic scoreboard, up todate and more in keeping with modern trends .This sould be in operation for the Carnival andhas ben made possible by financial assistancefrom the State Bank of Victoria .
There have been several significant innova-tions to Australian football which have origin-ated through the V .A .F .A . These include 19thand 20th men, white shorts worn by visitingclubs, and Independent Tribunal, fenced play-ing arenas, the final four and four interchangeplayers for Reserve and Under 19 grades . On asadder note a couple of our proposals have notbeen accepted with the same amount of enthus-iasm. I refer to the Order off Rule and thebanning of alcohol dringing around the ground .
FULL TIME ADMINISTRATIO NFor 25 years (1952-1977) the everyday admin-
istration of the V .A .F .A . was done in the Fuller-ton household at 5 Correa Avenue, Cheltenham .Jack's wife, Norma, was an extremely diligentAssistant Secretary, and their contribution dur-ing a fast-growing era did not go unnoticed .
The V.A .F .A has now 8000 registered playersspread over 59 senior teams in 6 sections,graded A to F, and 25 junior teams. All seniorteams field reserve grade teams .
8THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1985
f-allowing 1977 and the Fullerton retirement,Aif Keam took over as Secretary at a difficult,,me when change through sponsorship and;,n-field appearance was very much the futureiinage . The V.A .F .A . quickly formed a MarketingSection . The administrative duties continued togrow and in 1982 Peter French was appointed
the V.A .F .A .'s first full time General Manager .White Peter may qualify as "full time" by salary,the honorary workers certainly could claimsimilarrecognition . Presidents, ExecutiveComm-ittee chairmen, Committee chairmen and o f
lb members all carry out time consum-g duties.ing further more (how could I forget them)the V .A.F.A . boasts its own Umpires Associationcomplete with their own office-bearers .
PLAYERSPlayers. . . and that is what this Amateur Foot-
ball is really all about .And what a galaxy of champions have come
from our V .A .F .A .Seven V .F .L . Brownlow Medals have been
,on by former amateur stars who proved whata wonderful stepping ground the V .A .F .A . wasto league football . The household Brownlownames: Ivor Warne-Smith (Collegians-Melbourne) won two; Bill M orris (Old Scotch-Richmond) ; Dr . Don Cordner (University Blacks-Melbourne) ; Neil Roberts (M HS Old Boys-St .Kilda) ; Ross Smith (Hampton Rovers-St. Kilda) ;and Gary Dempsey ( Footscray Tech O.B .-Footscray and North Melbourne) .
I could put together another article just withnames from amateur ranks who went on tooutstanding league careers . For example morethan 20 players that fought out the 1964Collingwood-Melbourne Grand Final wererecruited from our ranks . Remember, and theystill talk about it, the goal Neil Crompto n
M ILESTONES AT COLLEGIANSBecause of the widespread critical acclaim o f
this writers first article, he has again beenencouraged to put pen to paper to clear thebacklog of milestones left unrecognised by theprevious writer . One of those is Chris "CJ"Warner who played his 100th game forCollegians in the first game of this season .Joining the club in 1979 from Wesley "CJ"quickly established himself as a player ofunparalled courage in his desire to get in andwin the hard ball, as indicated by one mostcourageous award and two most determinedawards . Despite fluctuating between the seniorsand reserves and suffering from a recedinghairline "CJ" has accepted the mixed fortunesof football with good grace playing well in thegrade in which selected . Despite missingselection in the 1981 B grade grand final CJ'sspirit and determination were epitomized bythe fine game he played in the reserves grandfinal in helping Collegians overun the dreadedenemy University Blues . Congratulations "CJ"on a fine 100 games and we all look forward t o
(Ormond) kicked to clinch Melbourne's lastpremiership win . And the 1958 Collingwoodgrand final "Steal" over Melbourne boasted 34 .
And there were others - Hawthorn's firstpremiership win in 1961 was studded with quitea few - John Winneke (Uni . Blacks), Ian Law,Colin Youren, Malcolm Hill and ex-Geelongcoach, Rod Olsson all from Old Scotch, andadd to the balance Ian Mort (Kew), MortonBrowne (Un. Blacks) and Graham Cooper(Hampton Rovers) .
Back in 1939-41 Alan La Fontaine (captainedand ex-University Blacks), Sid Anderson(MHSOB) and Ray Wartman (Brightonvale)played in three Melbourne premiership sideswhile in more recent years, Peter Murnane (DeLa Salle at Hawthorn) tasted success whileAndrew Ireland (Ivanhoe) hoped in manyappearances that one would go Collingwood'sway .
And of the many who stayed back with us . Tomention just a few - the great MHS Old Boysmulti-best and fairest award winner, JockaNelson, Ormond's Bruce Bourne, FootscraysVFL President, Tony Capes (Old Xaverians),Test cricketer Ian Redpath (Geelong), IanTurnbull (MHSOB) Lex Hibbins (Collegians,who unknowingly has helped put together thisarticle) and Manson Russel, 250 games withOld Scotch, selected in four Carnival sides andwent on to be V .A .F .A . President .
Which draws me to a conclusion, althoughthe tale could go on ; that perhaps the mostexciting feature of our Amateur football code isthe rivalry between the states which peaks witha Carnival every three years .
Thanks Jim for a great article and we lookforward to something from you prior to theFinals .
many more good games from you especiallywhen the rains come .
Another milestone reached at Collegianseven before -CJ's" was that of 50 games toRobert Oliphant reached in the 1984 A grade1st semi final . Ollie joined Collegians in 1982from that productive recruiting ground ofGeelong Grammar where the denizens aretypically short and slow and thus nearly alwaysback pocket players . This after brief~flirtationswith other positions Ollie eventually foundhimself banished to the back pocket with theimplied warning "your on your last chance son" .However, this position must have been Ollie'sniche for not only did he become a useful playerbut he also started to bring full back StuartHinchen into the game and make him a goodplayer . Probably the only mistake Ollie hasmade was in 1983 when he recruited AndrewWright down to Collegians and who has nowsecured the coveted back pocket position witha vice like grip . Congratulations Ollie on yourfirst 50 games .
