AFL New Zealand welcomes the fourth visit in as many years from the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA).The VAFA could be considered pioneers with their ongoing association with the development of Australian Football within New Zealand.

The AFL has followed this lead and will embark on crossing a similar frontier when St Kilda Football Club takes on 2012 Premiers the Sydney Swans in Wellington on ANZAC Day 2013.

AFL New Zealand has recently formed a partnership with Sport Wellington in a venture that will see more than 4000 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 participate in the AFL KiwiKick Programme.

The New Zealand Hawks Under 20 team has been replaced within the High Performance Programme by the Under 18 team that will now compete in the challenge matches against the VAFA Under 18 representative squad.

In a massive expansion to the High Performance Programme in

2013, Under 15, 16, and 17 New Zealand teams will join the current Under 18 and Senior teams.

Adding to this, New Zealand will also be represented by its fi rst ever female team when a touring AFL9s team from Australia visits Aotearoa in October 2013.

I have no doubt that the efforts of the VAFA have led the way to the opportunities now being presented to AFL within New Zealand.

We look forward to another great weekend of football and hopefully our fi rst victory against the Vics.

Robert Vanstam, CEO AFLNZ

The Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) is one of Australia’s oldest and largest senior football competitions. Originating in 1892, the Association has grown to now involve 240 teams, 74 clubs and over 12,500 registered players. The Association, which covers Metropolitan Melbourne, contains 25 Sections including 7 senior and reserve grade sections, 5 U19 sections, 2 Club XVIII sections and the U18 section.

The Association has a long and proud history of representative football commencing in 1925. Over the years, the VAFA has competed against the VFL, VFA, VCFL and state bodies from around Australia. This series against AFL New Zealand represents the fourth time a VAFA representative side has met an international team and continues the tradition that began in 2009.

The VAFA see this tour as an enormous opportunity to not only reward some of the

key contributors to the under 18 competition, but also to communicate to the football community the potential opportunities that are presented through participation in the VAFA.

On behalf of VAFA President Mr Bruno Conti and CEO Mr Michael Sholly, the VAFA would like to thank Robert Vanstam and the Board of AFL New Zealand for their efforts in accommodating us and we look forward to some exciting football over the weekend.
