A report on Job/Talent mela conducted by VAPS, PI of ni-msme at Madurai, Tamil Nadu A job/talent mela was conducted by the partner institute (PI), Voluntary Association of People Service (VAPS) on 20 th January 2015 at MADITSSIA hall, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The location of event is a prominent one and heart of the city and very easy access to reach the place. The event was disseminated via advertisement in the leading daily newspapers, pamphlets, and social media and in local TV channels. The participants thronged the area since 8.30 a.m. and the groups flocked in the vicinity. The team which was assigned effectively handled the mass in order to guide them and segregated accordingly. The information hoarding which had details of companies and their requirements with number of vacancies helped the job seekers to ease their tension and confusion. The meeting and recruitment hall had adequate facilities and the atmosphere was conducive. The event hall was well arranged with separate stalls/space the tables and chairs put for the recruiters very conveniently and code number was given to each recruiting company. The event began with the formal inaugural function. The programme started at 9.30 a.m. Inaugural address: The Secretary of VAPS, Mr. S.A. Arul welcomed the chief guests and gathering on behalf of the agency and ni-msme. While delivering the address, he explicitly mentioned the reason behind the job/talent mela which was mooted by the ni-msme. He said the need of the hour is to get employed in companies which required the skilled persons and the prospects. And also, he appreciated the companies who came forward to recruit the potential candidates and congratulated the participants to get succeed in the process of interview. About the scheme of ni-msme and organisation: The chief operating officer of VAPS, Mr. P. Somesh Babu began his speech with thanking the candidates and dignitaries who made the event very vibrantly. He succinctly mentioned about various ESDP and EDP trainings supported by ni-msme across the country and he also said the relevance of job/talent mela in the context of unemployment and under-employment. He however said there was a gap between the job providers and job seekers because of various factors; therefore this kind of opportunity would pave the way for placements to those were eligible and willing applicants. Inaugural address: The Chief Regional Manager of Central Bank of India, Madurai Mr. S. Asaithambi presided over the function amidst his hectic schedule. He delivered the inaugural function and while speaking he appreciated the efforts of ni-msme and VAPS for having organised the mega event. He said, as a banker, he was very well aware the relevance and significance of entrepreneurship skills and employability for the skilled persons. He emphasised that there was no dearth for placement opportunities in country like India, but availing the right opportunity/job was lacking among the job seekers. He said the unemployed segments should avail the existing opportunities like this job fair or start some tangible business. Before concluding his speech, he said his bank would support the unemployed youth who were ambitious to start a business venture, with this lighter vein he motivated the participants to be more productive and eventually he appreciated the efforts of the agency to have organised the event hugely and wished one and all.

Special Address: The Dean of The American College, Madurai, Dr. C. Muthu Raja delivered the special

address. He has been a motivator and trainer for the various organisations. He said the there was no dearth for

efficiency among youth, especially women segment as they had to do various chores including taking care of

family. The speaker’s quintessential address would have motivated the participants to the greater level. He

said there were various companies looking for potential candidates for skilled and semi-skilled jobs but at the

same time huge numbers of unemployed persons searching for placements elsewhere, otherwise frustrated. In

this context, this kind of event would play a significant role, connecting the job providers and job seekers. He

categorically mentioned that the prevalent situation was expecting skilled persons and also aiming at reducing

the burden unemployment. So, he motivated the participants to attend the interview confidently and

meanwhile, one should not get dejected, nor frustrated if they faced any failures in interview process. He

motivated the gathering, saying that the constant toil and try would trigger the success rate. With this bottom-

line, he concluded his speech.

Lighting the lamp: Midst of the function, the light (kuthuvilakku) was lit by the dignitaries, recruiters and a

job seeker.

Vote of thanks: The Programme Officer of VAPS, Mr. G. Senthil Raja delivered the vote of thanks. He

thanked the dignitaries, the recruiters, participants, volunteers and press who made the event was highly

successful. While delivering he said the efforts of staff of VAPS and volunteers and ni-msme were of great

which turned the event indelible and resonated exponentially.

Brief report about the outcome of the event:

• 26 companies (recruiters) participated and conducted the interview for the prospective candidates.

(The list of companies is attached)

• 852 vacancies available, predominantly in BPO sector and mechanical engineering and production

areas.

• 954 candidates were interviewed for various openings.

• The candidates who passed minimum 8th

standard and above participated in the job mela.

• 50 percent women participated actively which denoted that women segment were interested in joining

work and substitute the family income.

• The participants were mixed group in terms of the age and qualification, interestingly, huge numbers

of youths turned up for the response.

• 30 percent of the participants were successful in getting placement. And, several numbers of

applicants were under consideration.

• Drop box for resume/bio-date was kept. The collected applications to be taken into consideration for

placement.

• Feedback from both the recruiters and participants are said to have satisfactory and sense of vibrancy

prevailed among the youth segment.

• 129 candidates got selected in various companies.
