Dear Parishioners,
Gaudete in Domino semper! Rejoice in the Lord always! St. Paul's words are good to hear as we celebrate this Sunday. It is a good thing to rejoice in Jesus! As I am often worn down by the bad things happening in the larger Church universal, these words come at a good time for me, personally. My hope and prayer for you is that the joy of knowing JESUS helps you to keep His joy - even when things seem ugly and rough in the Church and in our personal lives. That's a prayer for my life, as well!
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no Special Blessings Mass this month. The next one will be celebrated on January 26, 2020 at 2 pm.
It's time to announce to you a change that will be coming in 2020: an architectural change. We have been discussing moving the choir away from the chairs nearest the altar to create a proper choir loft space of their own. This will necessitate taking out four pews and some of the blue chairs along the brick wall to make space for new wooden risers. I know for some of you, this will mean giving up "your space" in the pews affected by the change, so I want to announce the construction change now in December so that you are ready for the change when it happens in middle January and so you can find a new seat that makes use of the open area. I know this change may not please everyone but Jodi Connor, our music director, our sound team, and I believe as does the Parish Council that this will be a good move for both choir and congregation. I also know that there are lots of spaces available in the pews at all the weekend Masses to accommodate this change. It's hard to describe with words what will be best seen in pictures and images, but what we are going to create is a four-row loft that will have one aisle to accommodate 20-24 choir members, moving the piano slightly forward from its current position onto the white tile floor next to the organ. The change will also create a much more open space near the sanctuary. One nice effect of the change will also be to free up the left handrail into the sanctuary to make it more accessible for people to use. A second good effect will be to free up the space near the emergency exit glass door by the current choir area that will make it much more useful in case of an emergency. And finally, it will make for more beautiful wedding pictures for our brides and grooms marrying here at St. Luke. I know that when the project is completed, we will have to tinker a little with the distribution of Holy Communion on that side of church, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it. As we conclude the very first 40 Hours devotion this weekend, I want to thank all of you who signed up to spend an hour or more in prayer before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. I do see this devotion as our way to prepare as a parish for Christmas. I also see in the participation an invitation from the Lord --- that it's time for us to make our Adoration Chapel as close to perpetually staffed as possible! I am grateful for the many hours of prayer you spent in church this weekend. I'm grateful I had the extra opportunities to pray in silence myself, and I look forward to our next parish 40 Hours event! But let me take this moment to personally invite you to consider becoming a committed Eucharistic adorer in 2020. All in prayer, and all to the glory of God! In conclusion, I'd like to offer a final word of reminder about the sacrament of Penance. We will hear confessions on Tuesday and Thursday this week from 8-9 p.m., and Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. as usual. Next week before Christmas, the times will change a bit. We will not have the evening confessions on the 24th, obviously, but will have confessions on Christmas eve from 3-3:45 before the vigil Masses. We will have space available for confessions in both the church as usual, but also in a classroom in the FLC before the Mass there. We also will not have confessions on Wednesday, Christmas, December 25, or on Thursday evening the 26th. We can plan to have confessions on New Year's Eve before the vigil Mass. That would be 5-6 p.m. We will not have confessions on New Year's Day, January 1, but we will resume the regular schedule on Thursday night, January 2 at 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Yours in Christ,
Third Sunday of Advent | 3

G a u d e t e ! R e j o i c e ! Today, Gaudete Sunday, the Church turns her focus to our joyful anticipation of the Savior whose coming is now very near. This is indeed a season of joy! One of the greatest sources of joy is friendship. But joy is also one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. I think this is why (in my experience) there is no joy
quite like the joy found in Christian friendship. Good friendships between Christians are built on an authentic love of God and on a shared desire to live the virtuous life. These friendships are life-changing and an incredible source of joy. But they are rare, because they take time and effort, and often it is easier to be nice to many people than to be faithful friends to a few. These friendships require us to undergo much suffering, as we have not only our own life's crosses to carry, but also share the crosses of our close friends, helping them to carry their crosses and sharing in their pain. But even this is a joy, since it is an opportunity to show the love we have for our friends. And when we come through a time of trial together, we are brought closer to our friends, which makes sharing in the joys of their lives even sweeter! During this joyful time of year, there are many who for various reasons are not expecting to have a merry Christmas. Maybe they will be lonely due to the absence of a family member or other loved one who had been present during past Christmases. Maybe illness, injury, or old age threatens to interfere, leaving them disappointed or feeling left out. You probably know several people like that. In fact, you might even consider a few of them your friends. How will you give them the gift of the joy of your friendship during this coming season of joy? Can you include them in your own Christmas Day celebrations? Or round up a posse of their other friends and go visit them or invite them over? On the other hand, maybe you are the one who expects to have a difficult Christmas. How can you give others the gift of your friendship? Might you seek out others who, like you, might be going through a hard time? Or maybe you can reach out to other friends and ask if you can join them for Christmas. And if you find yourself thinking, "I don't want to intrude on their Christmas," reject those thoughts! If these are really your true friends, they will be overjoyed to be there for you and to spend this time with you! You only need to ask! Then not only will you bring joy to your friends, but they can also help you to find joy amid the struggle this Christmas, just as, on a cold night, turned away from every inn, in a stable meant for animals, Mary and Joseph nevertheless found the joy meant to be shared by us all.
