From the Pastor’s Desk Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “Will There be Only a Few Saved?”
In our daily life, let us say that we hear someone planning a feast or party. Most probably,
a number of questions will come to our mind… I wonder how many people have been
invited? And who has been invited? Or at times, President Trump’s staff says that some
officials will come and have dinner at the White House. There again we ask ourselves,
who will come? Are the invitees coming from the Democratic or Republican parties?
How many from each party will be invited?
We see this same attitude in today’s gospel (Luke 13: 22-30). Listen to these words,
“Through towns and villages Jesus went teaching… Someone said to him, Sir, will there
be only a few saved?” Jesus does not answer whether there will be many or a few who
will be saved. He does not want people to think along those lines. What He wants is that
each one of us should do our best to live a good life— “try your best” means, do all you
can, make special efforts to reach that goal. “The narrow door” makes us understand that
it will not be easy. We will have to make sacrifices, to let go of certain things, and certain
ways of doing things as well. continued on page 3

Tema: “¿Habrá Solo Unos Pocos Salvados?”
En nuestra vida diaria, digamos que escuchamos a alguien planeando una fiesta o fiesta.
Lo más probable es que se nos ocurran varias preguntas ... ¿Me pregunto cuántas personas
han sido invitadas? ¿Y quién ha sido invitado? O, a veces, el personal del presidente

nos preguntamos, ¿quién vendrá? ¿Vienen los invitados de los partidos demócrata o

Vemos esta misma actitud en el evangelio de hoy (Lucas 13: 22-30). Escuche estas
palabras: "A través de pueblos y aldeas, Jesús fue a enseñar ... Alguien le dijo, “Señor,
¿solo habrá unos pocos salvos?” Jesús no responde si habrá muchos o pocos que serán
salvos. Él no quiere que la gente piense en ese sentido. Lo que Él quiere es que cada uno
de nosotros haga todo lo posible para vivir una buena vida: “hacer lo major” significa,
hacer todo lo posible, hacer esfuerzos especiales para alcanzar esa meta. “La puerta

colgando a ambos lados. ¿Podrá ese burro pasar por una puerta estrecha?
La respuesta es no. La carga que lleva evitará que atraviese esa puerta. El
niño que empuja el burro lo sabe. ¿Entonces, qué hace? Quita la carga
para dejar entrar al burro. Del mismo modo, hay cosas en nuestras vidas
que son como esas grandes cargas. Necesitamos deshacernos de ellos si
queremos "entrar por la puerta angosta". Hace unas semanas, vimos que, a
veces, nuestras posesiones pueden dificultarnos la entrada al Reino de
Dios. El egoísmo, el orgullo, la injusticia, lo que sea que me aleje del
camino de Dios, todo eso es como un camino grande y fácil.

Jesús va más allá para dar el ejemplo de aquellos que serían salvos. Es el
ejemplo de una fiesta donde el invitado ha entrado en la habitación y la

Jesús no quiere decir que aquellos que realmente tratan de entrar en el

estuvieran allí, “hombres del Este y del Oeste, del Norte y del Sur,
vendrán a tomar sus lugares en la fiesta en el reino de Dios.”
Para los Judíos, este fue un paquete más sorprendente. Ellos vieron
ellos mismos como el "pueblo elegido". Creían que eran los favoritos de
Dios. Les había dado su ley y sus promesas. Pensaban que tenían, de
alguna manera, un "derecho" a entrar en el reino de Dios. Al igual que el
conocimiento, el reino no es propiedad de ninguna nación o individuo.

También deberíamos dar lo mejor de nosotros sin juzgar a las personas
que hacen su mejor esfuerzo de una manera diferente a la nuestra. A
veces, menospreciamos a las personas que no son cristianas. De alguna
manera sentimos que somos mejores que ellos. Podemos sentir la
tentación de pensar que somos los favoritos de Dios. Deberíamos
mantenernos en contra de tal forma de pensar. Finalmente, hagamos
nuestro mejor esfuerzo para hacer de OLGC la comunidad en la que
podamos adorar a Dios en verdad y espíritu.
(Continued from page 1) I want us to close our eyes and think of a donkey with big loads
hanging on either side. Will that donkey be able to pass through a
narrow gate? The answer is no. The load it carries will prevent it
from walking through that gate. The child pushing the donkey
knows that. So, what does he do? He removes the load to let the
donkey enter. In the same way, there are things in our lives which
are like those big loads. We need to get rid of them if we are to
“enter through the narrow door.” A few weeks ago, we saw that, at
times, our possessions can make it difficult for us to enter the
Kingdom of God. Selfishness, pride, injustice, whatever takes me
away from God’s path—all that is like a large and easy road
leading away from God’s house.
Jesus goes further to give the example of those who would be
saved. It is the example of a feast where the guest has entered the
room and the door has been closed. Then, other people arrive who
also want to enter. They beg, “ Lord, open up to us.” We are told
that the master answers them, “I do not know where you come
from.” And they will reply, “We once ate and drank in your
company; you taught in our streets.”
Jesus does not mean that those who really try to enter the
Kingdom of God will not be accepted. What He says, with this
example, is that we might come too late. We might have been
listening to his teaching at one time or other. We may have
followed Him for a while. But then, we went back to our own
business, forgetting about Him. We had to too many other things
to think about. When the hour comes to join in the feast, we are
still far away. We have not prepared ourselves. For instance, some
parishioners will come to the office for any document. Their
argument is that they were married, baptized their children, were
confirmed and were schooled at OLGC. After all these, they
have not come to church again or have been active in our parish
community.
This is what we were talking about two weeks ago, when we spoke
of standing ready. We were saying that we do not know the time
or the hour when God will call us to Himself. We should keep
ready at all times. Then, Jesus adds some surprising words. He
says that among those who will be welcomed, there will be people
whom we had not expected would be there—“men from East and
West, from North and South, will come to take their places at the
feast in the kingdom of God.”
For the Jews, this was a more surprising package. They saw
themselves as the “chosen people.” They believed they were
God’s favorites. He had given them His law and His promises.
They thought that they had, in some way, a “right” to enter the
kingdom of God. Like knowledge, the kingdom is not a property
of any nation or individual.
This week, look at yourself. Do you really “try your best?” We
should try our best without bothering about the small or great
number of those who will be saved. This is God’s secret. We
should try our best also without judging people who do their best
in any way different from the way we do. At times, we look down
on the people who are not Christians. We somehow feel we are
better than they are. We may be tempted to think that we are
God’s favorites. We should keep ourselves against such a way of
thinking. Finally, let us do our best to make OLGC the community
in which we can worship God in truth and spirit.

For September 2019-2020
Our Lady of Good Counsel is now accepting registrations for the
2019/2020 program year beginning in September.
Registration forms can be picked up in the back of the church or
in the parish office. The complete registration form, a copy of the
Baptism certificate, a copy of the birth certificate along with the
registration fee are to be submitted at the time of registration.
Registrations are accepted during parish office hours. For more
information call the parish office at
718-447-1503.
Re-registration forms were sent home on 2/24/19.
First Day of Class is Sunday, September 15, 2019 for
Pre-K through the 6th grade. First Day of Class for RCIA Teens
and 7th Grade is Wednesday, September 18, 2019.

Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo está aceptando inscripciones
para el programa 2019/2020 que comienza en Septiembre. Los
formularios de inscripción se pueden recoger en la parte posterior de
la iglesia o en la oficina parroquial. El formulario de inscripción
completo, una copia del certificado de bautismo, una copia del
certificado de nacimiento junto con la cuota de inscripción deben
